The Indian Army has chosen to equip thousands of its Negev light machine guns with Israeli magnification telescopes, which would help users engage targets effectively at extended ranges. Israeli firm Meprolight announced that the Indian Army selected its 'MEPRO X6' variant of telescopic sight for use as the dedicated daytime optic for its in-service Negev machine guns. Originally designed and developed by Israel Weapon Industries(IWI), the Negev guns are now being made in India, after the Indian Army placed an order for 41,000 guns in August 2024. The locally made guns with more than 50% indigenous content are being delivered in a phased manner, with 2,000 guns rolled out in March 2026.According to Meprolight, the Indian Army sought an advanced daytime optic capable of enhancing operational effectiveness of its Negev guns at extended ranges. The Army’s evaluation process included extensive user assessments and rigorous environmental testing focused on reliability, durability, accuracy and ease of operation under demanding conditions. The 'MEPRO X6' was developed specifically to meet the Indian Army’s requirements and is optimized for use with the Negev light machine gun (LMG). Its key advantages include a lightweight, relatively compact design; high-quality optical performance; and a reticle and ranging scale specifically tailored to the NEGEV platform."The order covers the procurement of more than 10,000 'MEPRO X6' units, with deliveries scheduled throughout 2026 and 2027. These sights are intended for the Negev order recently announced by our sister company, Israel Weapon Industries. The sights will be manufactured by RRP Defense in Mumbai, India.Queried about Meprolight's exposure to the Indian market, Kalimi said the firm has been active here for approximately 25 years and has built a longstanding relationship with the country’s defense sector. And, you know, like many things from generation to generation, things get sometimes forgotten. How are things? We know that the relationship with India is very good. IMEC is something that is talked about, but because of the West Asia crisis, it hasn't moved as well. I think that as much as we are successful in dealing successfully with challenges that we face, terrorism, other kinds of aggression, once we overcome and we prevail, we'll be able to do all the things we want to do. Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday morning but just a few hours after landing, he announced that he will cut short his crucial trip because of the security situation in his country.&nbsp;The trip was supposed to be for three days, which included visits to Agra and Mumbai.&nbsp;

Cohen said, "I landed a short time ago in New Delhi, the capital of India, and immediately upon landing I received a security update." He further added that he will return to Israel after his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will take place today.

India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Israeli counterpart held bilateral talks in New Delhi and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the India-Israel relationship.&nbsp;

Three MoUs signed between India and Israel in the presence of India's Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and the Israeli foreign minister.&nbsp;

Israel FM cuts short his India visit, will return after meeting PM Modi today

Israel's foreign minister Eli Cohen is set to visit India next month, in what is expected to be a two-day visit starting&nbsp;May 9th. The visit will focus on strengthening ties between the two countries in various areas, including trade. This will be Cohen's first-ever visit to India since taking charge of the foreign ministry in December of last year. Despite this, both Indian and Israeli foreign ministers have been in regular contact with each other.

Cohen's visit comes after Israel's Economy Minister Nir Barkat visited India earlier this year, where he held talks with Indian trade minister Piyush Goyal with a focus on the India-Israel Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This will be the second visit by an Israeli minister to India under the current Netanyahu government.

Israel's foreign minister Eli Cohen is set to visit India next month, in what is expected to be a two-day visit starting May 9th. The visit will focus on strengthening ties between the two countries in various areas, including trade.

Historically, India has supported the Palestinian cause but today, India views the conflict as an internal matter of Israel and Palestine.

New Delhi follows what is called a "de-hyphenation policy". It maintains an independent relationship with Israel and an independent relationship with Palestine - both are separate and both stand on their own merit.

This stance reflects in India's latest statement at the UNSC. New Delhi has called upon both sides to de-escalate and resume direct dialogue. It has expressed "strong support" for the just Palestinian cause and opposed Hamas rocket fire against Israel while underlining an "unwavering commitment" to the two-state solution.

Interestingly, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has not included India in the list of 25 countries that he has thanked for standing by Israel's side in its hour of crisis.

"They say when the Janta Party forms a government, it won't support Arabs but Israel. We have made our stance clear, to remove any doubts, I want to say this that we will view every angle based on facts but the situation is absolutely clear that Israel will have to vacate the land of Arabs which it has captured," Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India's former prime minister had said.

India was earlier a major champion of the Palestinian cause. The only non-Arab country to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as the legitimate representative of the Palestinians.

In 1975, the PLO was even allowed to open an office in New Delhi and five years later in 1980, this office was given full diplomatic status.

In 1948, India voted against the creation of Israel until 1992, India did not establish diplomatic ties with Israel but behind the scenes, the two sides were collaborating.

Israel had helped India in the 1971 war against Pakistan for the liberation of Bangladesh. It took another two decades for India to recognise Israel and&nbsp;since then&nbsp;the relationship has blossomed at all levels.

Israel helped India with defence technology during the Kargil war and by 2013, India had become Israel's third-largest trading partner in Asia. The proximity between India and Israel did not come at the cost of India's relationship with Palestine.

In 2003, India voted for a UN resolution against the construction of the West Bank wall by Israel. In 2011, it voted in favour of accepting Palestine as a full member of UNESCO and in 2014, India supported a UNHRC resolution to probe Israel's offensive in Gaza.

However with time, the balancing act has become tougher but pragmatism and non-alignment have continued to drive India's approach as it dealt with Israel and Palestine independently.

It was underpinned by PM Narendra Modi's visit to Israel in 2017.

"It's my singular honour to be the first-ever prime minister of India to undertake this groundbreaking visit to Israel," PM Modi had said.

The Indian prime minister subsequently visited Palestine in 2018.

"India hopes for peace and stability in this region," the Indian prime minister said.

In February 2019, India used Israeli made Spice-2000 bombs to strike Pakistani terror launchpads in Balakot. In December 2019, India voted against America's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

For India, the capital is the city of Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem which remains contested.

Why are officers of the Israeli police force travelling all the way to a nondescript town in north Kerala in frequent intervals?

Because, their elegant light blue, long-sleeve uniform shirts are being stitched at an apparel unit in Kannur, which has the glorious tradition of handloom making and textile export.

Hundreds of tailors at the Maryan Apparel Pvt Limited, operating at the industrial park at Valiyavelicham in the district, are toiling hard to get the smart looking uniforms ready for the Israel police force.

They not only stitch the double-pocket shirts but also design and attach the trademark emblems on its sleeves.

The local dressmakers have been supplying nearly one lakh shirts annually to the Israeli police for the last three years.

Owned by Thodupuzha-based businessman Thomas Olickal, the company also bagged the orders for supplying uniforms for Kuwait's fire service and national guard.

If everything goes as planned, the Maryan Apparel would soon start stitching uniforms for the Philippine Army, a top company official said.

"We are supplying uniform shirts to the Israeli police- both men and women officers- for the last three years," Sijin Kumar, accounts and administration manger of the company said.

"Earlier, we used to supply trousers also. But, the order for it was bagged by a Chinese firm recently. We hope that we will get the contract back at the earliest and discussions are going on in this regard," he said.

Launched at the state-run Kinfra Park here in 2006, the company specialises in uniforms of army men, police personnel, security officers and health service workers of various countries across the globe.

It also supplies school uniforms, dress for supermarket staff, doctors' coats, coveralls, corporate wears and so on.

In 2008, the apparel unit was shifted to Kannur with an objective to provide employment to local people who had become jobless due to the decline of the traditional beedi sector there.

Kumar said the Israeli officials are very particular about the quality of the material and even the minute details of the stitching and embroidery.

"They visit the stitching unit at frequent intervals to monitor the process. Recently, they entrusted the task of monitoring with a company in Tamil Nadu and their team come here once in a month to check the quality of the work," Factory Manager, Shaneesh T V said.

The number of uniforms stitched at the unit would depend on their requirements.

Generally, it would be between 50,000-1,00,000 annually, he said.

The material for the uniform of Israel police is imported from the US.

The cloth, produced at the company's own mill in Mumbai, would also be used at times.

The apparel unit that employs 850 people, majority of them women, are planning to expand its operations in the coming years.

But, the lack of sufficient trained and skilled manpower is a major cause of concern for the company authorities.
