<p>Over 10 months into the war, Israel has accomplished everything that it could gain militarily in the Gaza Strip against Hamas and can't do anything more, a report in the <em>New York Times </em>has claimed, citing US officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Washington believes that Tel Aviv will never be able to completely wipe out Hamas and that more bombings only increase the risk of civilian casualties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Israel has been able to disrupt Hamas, kill a number of their leaders and largely reduce the threat to Israel that existed before October 7,” Gen. Joseph L. Votel, former head of US Central Command was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A former senior CIA official added that Hamas was largely depleted in the region but nowhere near being wiped out off the map.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the Israeli side has refuted the claims saying there were gains still to be made on the ground in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“If Israel evacuates its forces now, within a year, Hamas will be strong again,” said&nbsp;Yaakov Amidror, a retired IDF major general, who added that the military needs another two to three months in central and southern Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The White House has approved $20 billion in fighter jets and other military equipment for Israel as the ongoing war with Gaza ceases to end with Iran threatening another conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Pentagon, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken approved the sale of more than 50 F-15 jets and equipment worth nearly $19 billion including $774 million in tank cartridges, $60 million in explosive mortar cartridges and army vehicles worth $583 million. However, the deliveries of the said equipment would not begin for years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US&nbsp;national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defence capability. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives,” the State Department said in a release on the sale.</p>

<p>Notably, the contracts for the f-15 jets will not only include the sale but also upgrade kits for Israel to modify its existing fleet of fighter jets. The first deliveries are expected in 2029.</p>

<p>The report added that the original plan to assassinate Haniyeh was in May when he attended the funeral of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's former president.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the plan could not be executed due to the large crowds gathered in the building which increased the possibility of failure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Later, two agents placed the explosive devices in the IRGC&nbsp;guesthouse in north Tehran where Haniyeh was staying. CCTV footage showed the agents entering and exiting multiple rooms within minutes, according to officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agents then snuck out of Iran but still had a source in Tehran. After confirmation that Haniyeh was in one of the rooms, the explosive was detonated from abroad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biden held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday (Aug 1) where he said the US would&nbsp;“support Israel’s defence against threats,” which would include “new defensive US military deployments".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In May 2021, after an Israeli raid carried out on Al Aqsa mosque enraged the Arab and Muslim world, Deif started planning the operation this past weekend, which led to the killing of 1,200 Israelis and injured more than 2,700, as per Reuters.</p>

<p>"It was triggered by scenes and footage of Israel storming Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, attacking them, dragging elderly and young men out of the mosque. All this fuelled and ignited the anger," stated a source in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deif, who has survived seven Israeli assassination attempts - the most recent to have taken place in 2021 - speaks rarely and has never appeared in public. However, on Saturday he spoke to the Palestinians through Hamas' TV channel, signalling something significant was to take place.</p>

<p>"Today the rage of Al Aqsa, the rage of our people and nation is exploding. Our mujahedeen (fighters), today is your day to make this criminal understand that his time has ended," Deif was heard saying in the recording.</p>

<p>In the public domain, only three images of Deif are available - one in his 20s, another of him masked, and the third one is the image of his shadow, which the TV used when broadcasting the audio tape.</p>

<p>At least ten people were killed on the&nbsp;Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday (Jul 27) after the town of&nbsp;Majdal Shams was hit by a barrage of rockets fired from Lebanon, reported news agency AFP.</p>

<p>Eli Bin, head of the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service, earlier reported that&nbsp;nine people had been killed and 34 wounded including 17 in critical condition.</p>

<p>Earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said approximately 30 projectiles were fired from Lebanon.&nbsp;“A short while ago, sirens sounded in the area of Majdal Shams. One projectile was identified crossing from Lebanon toward the area. A hit was identified in the area. Injuries were reported,” the IDF said.</p>

<p>It was not immediately clear who fired the projectiles, with Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah firmly denying its involvement.</p>

<p>“The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon firmly denies the allegations made by some enemy media outlets and various media platforms regarding the targeting of Majdal Shams,” it said in a Telegram channel on Saturday.</p>

<p>The IDF on the other hand, blamed Hezbollah for the attack.</p>

<p>"The Hezbollah terrorist organisation is behind the rocket launch at a soccer field in Majdal Shams," the Israeli army said in a statement.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, local police said&nbsp;munitions have fallen in “multiple sites in the northern Golan.”</p>

<p>The UN rights chief Volker Turk, on Tuesday, revealed the disturbing number of civilians being killed in armed conflicts across the world to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, the number of civilian deaths in armed conflict soared by 72 per cent in 2023, said the UN rights chief citing the data gathered by his office.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Turk noted how killing and injuring of civilians as well as the destruction of vital infrastructure have become a “daily occurrence”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Children shot at. Hospitals bombed. Heavy artillery launched on entire communities. All along with hateful, divisive, and dehumanising rhetoric,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data, collected by the OHCHR, “horrifyingly” also indicates “that the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled, compared to the year prior,” Turk said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Unconscionable death and suffering’</strong></h2>

<p>Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are suffering a drastically worsening human rights environment, alongside “unconscionable death and suffering” in Gaza, the UN rights chief said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Turk also said he was “appalled by the disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law by parties to the conflict” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the UN data, over 120,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured because of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;</p>
