US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement that those who were sanctioned helped Hamas to "carry out acts like the vicious attack on Israel."

"Today's actions are directed at Hamas terrorists and their support network, not Palestinians," he added, calling for a release of hostages in its custody.

Treasury Secretary Yellen said that the US will "continue to take all steps necessary" in order to deny Hamas capability to raise money to carry out "atrocities".

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said said that the US is &nbsp;"committed to imposing more sanctions alone, and in coordination with our partners."

The US already considers Hamas a terrorist organization.

"In addition to the funds Hamas receives from Iran, its global portfolio of investments generates vast sums of revenue through its assets, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars," the Treasury said.

<h2>The 'secret' portfolio</h2>

Six of those who faced sanctions on Wednesday were associated with a Hamas "secret investment portfolio."

These include Musa Muhammad Salim Dudin, who is a member of Hamas' Political Bureau, and also Abdelbasit Hamza Elhassan Mohamed Khair, a Sudan-based Hamas financier.

The US Treasury said that two "senior Hamas officials" were also targetted: Muhammad Ahmad 'Abd Al-Dayim Nasrallah, who is based in Qatar and Ayman Nofal, who was allegedly killed in an airstrike on Tuesday.

The department has also targetted Gaza-based virtual currency exchange. The Treasury has noted that Hamas has relied on virtual currency as well.

The sanctions will result in US property of designated individuals getting blocked and reported and would also result in other restrictions.

"We're cutting them off from access to their money," said a Treasury official as quoted by AFP. The official added that senior officials will also be traveling to coordinate with allies.

Biden has also spoken with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmud Abbas for the first time since the fight broke out a week ago. He has "condemned Hamas' brutal attack on Israel."

"Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people's right to dignity and self-determination," Biden told Abbas, according to a White House statement.

US deploys aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower to deter ‘hostile’ nations, prevent Israel-Hamas war from expanding

Saudi Arabia is reportedly putting plans of normalisation of ties with Israel on the back burner in light of the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas, Reuters reported citing sources. This has signalled rapid rethinking of its foreign policy amid escalation of situation in the Middle East.

The conflict has pushed Saudi Arabia to engage more with Iran, its regional foe. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi with a view to prevent broader surge in violence which may span the entire Middle East.

A Saudi statement said the crown prince told Raisi "the kingdom is exerting maximum effort to engage with all international and regional parties to halt the ongoing escalation", underling Riyadh's move to contain the crisis.

Reuters said that there would now be delay in US-backed talks on normalisation of ties with Israel.

Until Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, both Saudi Arabia and Israel had been saying that they were moving towards a normalisation deal. This had potential to reshape the geopolitical scenario in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia is home to Islam's two holiest sites. The kingdom had reportedly indicated till recently that it would not allow its pursuit of a U.S. defence pact be derailed even if Israel did not offer significant concessions to the Palestinians in the their bid for statehood.

As the Israel-Hamas conflict completes a week, at least 1300 Israelis have been killed till now. On the Palestinian side, 1900 people have lost lives.

Reuters said that Saudi Arabia is not in a mood to continue normalisation talks with Israel for now and Israeli concessions for Palestinians may assume greater importance in the kingdom's calculus.

"Normalisation was already considered taboo (in the Arab world) ... this war only amplifies that," Saudi analyst Aziz Alghashian said as quoted by Reuters.

The US has been working for greater intergration of Israel with the Arab world that immediately surrounds it geohraphically. Washington has been keen to build on the Abraham Accords which saw normalisation of ties between Israel and some Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On its part, the US has maintained that normalisation process has not been abandoned.

Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit went to Moscow to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the situation in Gaza.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that it was talking with Saudi Arabia and Jordan to bring the conflict to a stop.

Saudi Arabia called for an “immediate cessation of violence”.

Israel&nbsp;said it will close its only&nbsp;crossing&nbsp;from the Gaza Strip for workers on Sunday in response to overnight&nbsp;rocket&nbsp;fire, stopping short of conducting retaliatory strikes in an apparent bid to ease tensions.

The&nbsp;rocket&nbsp;attacks&nbsp;on Friday night and Saturday morning followed days of clashes at Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound and a month of deadly violence.

The unrest -- which comes as the Jewish festival of Passover overlaps with the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan -- has sparked international fears of a wider conflict, one year&nbsp;after&nbsp;similar violence led to an 11-day war between&nbsp;Israel&nbsp;and Gaza-based militants.

The escalating unrest prompted concern at the United Nations, which on Thursday demanded a probe into the Israeli police actions.

Soumya Santhosh, an Indian caregiver in Israel, died in the rocket attack and is survived by a 9-year-old son and her husband. Israel on Saturday welcomed Australia's recognition of west Jerusalem as its capital as "a step in the right direction", despite Canberra stopping short of moving its embassy to the city.

In the meantime, Morrison said, Australia would establish a defence and trade office in the west of the city.

"Israel views the decision of the Australian government to open its trade and defence office in Jerusalem as a step in the right direction," a foreign ministry statement said.

"Israel congratulates the government of Australia for its stance regarding sanctions on Iran and also regarding its pro-Israel position at the UN and against antisemitism."

Israel occupied Arab east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day war and later annexed it, declaring the entire city its "eternal and indivisible capital."

Palestinians claim the eastern part as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said Australia's move to open a trade office in Jerusalem violates a United Nations resolution.

"From the beginning, we've perceived the Australian government's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital as one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security," he said in a statement.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced earlier on Saturday that his government was following US President Donald Trump's lead in recognising the contested city as Israel's capital. But unlike the United States, he said Canberra would not relocate its Tel Aviv embassy to Jerusalem until Israel and the Palestinians reach a peace settlement. In the meantime, Morrison said, Australia would establish a defence and trade office in the west of the city. "Israel views the decision of the Australian government to open its trade and defence office in Jerusalem as a step in the right direction," a foreign ministry statement said. "Israel congratulates the government of Australia for its stance regarding sanctions on Iran and also regarding its pro-Israel position at the UN and against antisemitism." Israel occupied Arab east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day war and later annexed it, declaring the entire city its "eternal and indivisible capital." Palestinians claim the eastern part as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said Australia's move to open a trade office in Jerusalem violates a United Nations resolution. "From the beginning, we've perceived the Australian government's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital as one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security," he said in a statement. Most countries have avoided moving their embassies to anywhere in the city to avoid hindering peace talks on the city's final status -- until Trump unilaterally moved the US embassy there earlier this year. Unlike Trump, Morrison committed to recognising a future state of Palestine with east Jerusalem as its capital.
