Israel shielding skies with Iron Dome defence system. What is it and how does it work?

Israel said Thursday that it had intercepted rocket fire from Lebanon following clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians inside Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque. The violence inside Islam's third-holiest site had led to warnings of retaliation from around the region. Israel also denied Lebanese reports that it had carried out retaliatory strikes against the attack.

Dozens of rockets were fired from southern Lebanon on Thursday afternoon and 25 of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system over northern Israel, the military said. At least three people were injured and several buildings were damaged.

The Israel Defence Forces said 34 rockets had been fired toward the border with five landing inside Israel, and most of the rest were downed. The impact sites of four other rockets were not clearly known.

It was the first time since the 2006 war when a barrage of so many rockets has been fired on Israel from Lebanon. In August 2021, Hezbollah had fired 19 rockets at northern Israel. 
 
"A rocket was fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory and was successfully intercepted," an army statement said.

One man is said to be injured in the attack by shrapnel and another woman is also wounded.&nbsp;

Israeli media reported that a "salvo" of projectiles had been fired by Lebanon. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Warning sirens were sounded in the town of Shlomi and in Moshav Betzet and the Galilee in northern Israel.&nbsp;

The rocket fire happened amid high tensions after Israeli police clashed with Palestinians inside the al-Aqsa mosque early on Wednesday and again in the evening.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that he was "receiving continuous updates about the security situation and will conduct an assessment with the heads of the security establishment."&nbsp;

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant was also briefed on the details of the rockets being fired.

"The minister will soon conduct a situation assessment with senior officials in the defence establishment," a ministry spokesman said.

No group claimed responsibility for the assault&nbsp;and the Al-Arabiya network cited&nbsp;a source in Hezbollah as saying that it was not behind the rocket fire&nbsp;and apparently put the blame on&nbsp;Palestinian groups in the area.&nbsp;

Before dawn on Wednesday, armed police in riot gear stormed the prayer hall of al-Aqsa mosque to remove "law-breaking youths and masked agitators" who had supposedly barricaded themselves inside.

The violence occurred during both the Jewish Passover and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. An exchange of rockets and air strikes with militants in the Gaza Strip ensued.&nbsp;

Earlier on Thursday, Lebanon's pro-Iranian armed movement Hezbollah warned it would support "all measures" that Palestinian groups plan to take against Israel after the clashes.&nbsp;

"Hezbollah forcefully denounces the assault carried out by the Israeli occupation forces against the al-Aqsa mosque compound and its attacks on the faithful," Hezbollah said in a statement.

Lebanon fires barrage of rockets after clashes at al-Aqsa mosque; five hit Israeli targets

In a first since January, Israel on Tuesday carried out airstrikes on the Gaza strip. The move came as a &nbsp;response to a rocket fired by the Palestinian enclave.

Following the rocket firing by Islamist group Hamas, sirens were sounded in southern Israel. Reportedly, the projectile crashed into the sea off Tel Aviv.

In a statement the Israeli ministry said that the “rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome Air Defense System," and hours later the Israeli air force announced that it has retaliated by targetting a Hamas weapon manufacturing site.

Last year, around the same time, a similar turmoil in Jerusalem had prompted multiple Hamas rocket fire into Israel, which later developed into an 11-day war.

Israeli jets conduct airstrikes on Gaza after border clashes

Amid the ceasefire between Israel and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/gaza-conflict-israel-removes-almost-all-emergency-restrictions-hamas-claims-victory-386492">Hamas</a> after 11 days of fighting, US President Joe Biden said that he had "assured" Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu of his "full support to replenish Israel's Iron Dome system to ensure its defences and security in the future."

According to the Israeli Army, militants had fired at least 4,300 rockets towards its territory,&nbsp;most of which were shot down by the Iron Dome.

Israel had conducted several airstrikes since May 10, taking down several key buildings in Gaza.

At least 230 Palestinian were killed including 65 children during the airstrikes, with the rockets claiming 12 lives in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-sees-genuine-opportunity-for-peace-after-israel-hamas-ceasefire-386388">Israel</a>, including two children, also an Israeli soldier one Indian and two Thai nationals were killed.

The Israeli security cabinet approved plans for a ceasefire which takes effect at 23:00 GMT on Thursday.

"We remain committed working with the United Nations and other international stakeholders to provide rapid humanitarian assistance and marshal international support for the people of Gaza and the Gaza reconstruction efforts," Biden said.

The UN Human Rights Council said it&nbsp;will hold a special session next week to address "the grave human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem."

However, Israel's ambassador in Geneva Meirav Eilon Shahar has asked member states to oppose the meeting.
