With Iran digging in and its negotiating partners openly expressing frustration and pessimism, the long-delayed resumption of nuclear talks has gotten off to a rough start.

The United States said last week after five days of negotiations in Vienna that Iran did not seem serious.

As for Iran, its top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said Washington should take the initiative to revive the 2015 nuclear deal since it was the one that left the deal.

Bagheri Kani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not budge on its demands for the lifting of sanctions as part of the restoration of the nuclear deal, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.

Iran has been accused of backtracking on its previous promises by European diplomats. Iran's commitment to the nuclear deal has been questioned even by Russia, a country that has strong ties with Iran.

Israel, which is an outside observer and has a stake in the outcome of the talks, has stepped up its rhetoric and is sending two top security officials to Washington for consultations.

"I call on every country negotiating with Iran in Vienna to take a strong line and make it clear to Iran that they cannot enrich uranium and negotiate at the same time," Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Sunday.

"Iran must begin to pay a price for its violations."

In the end, last week's talks produced one positive outcome: an agreement to continue talking.

These talks in Vienna ended a five-month hiatus and were the first to be attended by Iran's new hard-line government.

It will become clearer when negotiators reconvene in the coming days if the wide gaps seen last week are merely posturing or a sign of an increasingly serious crisis.

Iran and six world powers are seeking to revive their 2015 nuclear agreement. The then-President Barack Obama spearheaded that agreement, which gave Iran relief from crippling sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.

Three years later, however, President Donald Trump, with the encouragement of then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, withdrew from the agreement, causing it to unravel.

Iranian nuclear activities have intensified since then, as it has amassed a stockpile of highly enriched uranium that goes far beyond what was allowed under the nuclear agreement.

The continued advancements in Iran's atomic program have raised the stakes despite Iran's claims that its activities are peaceful.

Earlier this year, in April, Israel's intelligence agency Mossad recruited top Iranian scientists and tricked them to believe that they were working for international dissident groups, in order to carry a secret operation that involved blowing up their own nuclear plant. A report by the Jewish Chronicle reveals that up to ten scientists were hired to destroy the Natanz nuclear facility.

This revelation comes as one of three acts of sabotages which were allegedly linked with Mossad when the Natanz facility was first hit by explosives.

The operation resulted in the demolition of nearly 90 per cent of the centrifuges at the nuclear plant. This put up the key complex out of use for a period of nine months.

This was done by smuggling explosives into the compound using a drone. These drones were then collected by the scientists. Several explosives were also smuggled into the high-security facility through food boxes and lorries.

The Jewish Chronicle claims that these three operations were planned in a time span of over 18 months. It involved a team of 1,000 technicians, spies and several agents on the ground.

Former advisor to the Israeli Ministry of Defence Ely Karmon spoke to WION on Tuesday to present a breakdown of Iran’s uranium enrichment plan.

He said that Iranians have 3,000 kilograms of enriched uranium and are capable to produce a nuclear bomb in two months.

“Iranians, today, have the capability to produce a nuclear bomb in two months. They have 3,000 kilograms of enriched uranium, from this 120 kg is 60 per cent pure, which means that with 200 kilograms they can build a bomb. They are now probably preparing to reach 90 per cent purity,” said Karmon, who is a senior research scholar at International Institute for Counter-Terrorism.

Karmon also dispelled Iran’s long-held assertion that their nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes.

“Israel has the archives of the (Iran’s) nuclear program, which clearly shows that they aim it to use for military purposes. They, however, stopped mid-way because of the threat from the US. We also understand that they are producing nuclear missiles, which has the capability to hit at the distance of 2,000 kilometres,” Karmon said.

When asked whether Iran would pause their military nuclear programme under pressure from the US, Karmon said, “US has become much weaker because it retreated from the Middle East momentarily and suffered a loss in Afghanistan and also, they didn’t arrive in any agreement with the North Koreans. So, Iranians are clearly sure that the US cannot impose their will on them.”

Karmon said that even if a nuclear agreement with Iran is reached, there is always a possibility that Tehran would restart its military nuclear programme.

“We need a sensitive intelligence, and at the moment US is not controlling what happens on the ground. According to information from national defence forces, they have already prepared to reach 90 per cent purity, which means they want to go nuclear,” he said.

Don't give in to Iran's blackmail, says Israeli PM Naftali Bennett as nuclear talks resume

Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday expressed fears that Iran would get sanctions relief without significant curbs on its nuclear program. The statement came just a day ahead of world powers going in a huddle with Iran in a last-ditch effort to salvage 2015 nuclear agreement. The negotiations are to begin on November 29 in Vienna.

"Israel is very worried about the readiness to remove the sanctions and to allow a flow of billions (of dollars) to Iran in exchange for unsatisfactory restrictions in the nuclear realm," Bennett told his cabinet in televised remarks.

"This is the message that we are relaying in every manner, whether to the Americans or to the other countries negotiating with Iran."

US and other world powers had entered into nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. The deal was hailed as a landmark event. However, former US President Donald Trump unilaterally took US out of the deal in 2018. This put crippling sanctions back on Iran.

Negotiations have been going on in Vienna to revive the deal but no significant progress has been made till now.

Israel, which is not a party to the talks, opposed the original 2015 pact as too limited in scope and duration. Israeli leaders have long threatened military action against Iran if they deem diplomacy a dead end for denying it nuclear weaponry.

The Islamic Republic says its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.

Few expect a breakthrough in the talks as Iran's uranium enrichment activities have escalated in an apparent bid to gain leverage against the West.

Six rounds of indirect talks were held between April and June. The new round begins after a hiatus caused by the election of a new Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric.
