Two Iranian aerospace officials ‘martyred while on mission’

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has warned that Iran was drawing “dangerously close” to producing nuclear weapons.

In an interview to UK’s Telegraph on Saturday, Bennett said, “Iran is enriching uranium at an unprecedented rate and moving dangerously close to getting their hands on nuclear weapons.”

The prime minister called on the global community to ramp up pressure against Tehran’s nuclear program and ambitions.

His comments come at a when there are several reports suggesting that Iran may have already attained the material needed to manufacture a nuclear weapon.

On Thursday, Iran switched off surveillance cameras used by the international nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, to monitor activity at the country's key nuclear facilities.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi warned that the move could deal a "fatal blow" to negotiations that seek to revive the nuclear deal.

The absence of footage from nuclear sites deprives the negotiators of the nuclear deal —known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) —to "technically impossible to have an agreement," IAEA chief Raphael Grossi told CNN Thursday.

"Or you could have (a deal) on the basis of no information, which I suppose is not going to happen," said Grossi.

"This is why we are saying it's a very serious thing. It has consequences. Of course it does."

The IAEA has said that it did not have access to the data collected by such cameras for more than a year. The agency hopes it will gain access to that data, which remains with Iran, at a later date.

Iran on Thursday began removing all the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring equipment installed under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, giving a near-fatal blow to the chances of reviving the deal.

France, Britain and Germany condemned Iran, saying the move cast a doubt on Tehran's will to revive the accord." These actions only aggravate the situation and complicate our efforts to restore full implementation of the JCPoA (nuclear deal)," the three countries said in a statement. "They also cast further doubt on Iran’s commitment to a successful outcome."

Iran had warned of retaliation if the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution drafted by the United States, France, Britain and Germany criticising Tehran for its continued failure to explain uranium traces found at undeclared sites. The resolution was passed by a crushing majority late on Wednesday.

Iran told the agency overnight it planned to remove equipment including 27 IAEA cameras as of Thursday, which is "basically all" the extra monitoring equipment installed under the 2015 deal going beyond Iran's core obligations to the agency, IAEA Chief Grossi told a news conference.

That leaves a window of opportunity of three to four weeks to restore at least some of the monitoring that is being scrapped, or the IAEA will lose the ability to piece together Iran's most important nuclear activities. "I think this would be a fatal blow (to reviving the deal)," Grossi said of what would happen if that window went unused.

U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said even after the three or four week period Iran could still provide additional information to allow for the nuclear deal's revival. "We are not on death watch (for the next) three to four weeks," said a senior U.S. official, saying the deal could be resurrected, although the longer Iran withheld access the more transparency it would have to give the IAEA.

Indirect talks between Iran and the United States on reviving the 2015 deal have been stalled since March. "You think we would retreat from our positions if you pass a resolution at the (IAEA) Board of Governors? In the name of God and the great nation of Iran, we will not back off a single step from our positions," Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said in a speech.

Since then-President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal and re-imposed sanctions against Tehran in 2018, Iran has breached many of the deal's limits on its nuclear activities. It is enriching uranium to close to weapons grade.

Iran’s removal of monitoring cameras gives ‘fatal’ blow to 2015 nuclear deal: IAEA

UN nuclear watchdog censures Iran, IAEA cameras removed from nuke facility

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Wednesday adopted a resolution that formally criticises Iran for not co-operating with United Nations (UN) nuclear inspectorate, said AFP quoting diplomatic sources. The move has come just hours after Iran decided to disconnect IAEA's cameras at its nuclear sites.

The motion to formally criticises Iran was brought by United States, Britain, France and Germany. The motion was voted against by Russia and China.

The motion is the first to criticise Iran since June 2020. It has come even as talks to restore Iran nuclear deal are in a stalemate. The nuclear deal, considered a landmark international agreement, was struck by the US and other world powers with Iran. But when former US president Donald Trump took office, he took USA out of the deal.

Prior to Iran's disconnection of IAEA cameras at the nuclear site, the Islamic republic had drawn international flak for not adequately explaining UN watchdog's questions on traces of Uranium at undeclared sites in the country.

The move was welcomed by Israel, which said it was a "first and necessary step towards the goal of restoring Iran's compliance with its safeguards obligations".

Iran said the cameras it has disconnected had been operating as a "goodwill gesture", outside its safeguard agreement with the IAEA.

Nuclear deal in trouble? IAEA formally criticisises Iran for non-cooperation: Report

Iran denounced as "political" and "unconstructive" Thursday a resolution adopted by the UN nuclear watchdog censuring it for failing to cooperate.

"Iran condemns the adoption of the resolution presented by the United States, Britain, France and Germany at the Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency as a political, unconstructive and incorrect action," a foreign ministry statement said.

Iran already announced it had disconnected some IAEA cameras monitoring its nuclear sites in anticipation of the watchdog's adoption of the Western-drafted censure motion Wednesday.

The motion -- the first to criticise Iran since June 2020 -- was approved by 30 members of the IAEA board of governors, with only Russia and China voting against it.

The resolution came after the Vienna-based IAEA raised concerns about traces of enriched uranium previously found at three sites Tehran had not declared as having hosted nuclear activities.

"The adoption of the resolution, which is based on the hasty and unbalanced report of the director general of the IAEA and on false and fabricated information from the Zionist regime (Israel), will only weaken the process of cooperation and interaction between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the agency," the foreign ministry statement said.

"Iran has taken reciprocal practical steps due to the non-constructive approach of the agency and the adoption of the resolution, including the installation of advanced centrifuges and the deactivation of cameras."

In a statement on Wednesday, Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation stressed that it was continuing to abide by the safeguard agreement with the IAEA.

"More than 80 percent of the agency's existing cameras are operating according to the safeguard agreement and will continue to operate just as before," it said.

Foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned the resolution in a tweet, insisting Iran has "the world's most transparent peaceful nuclear programme".

"The initiators are responsible for the consequences. Iran's response is firm & proportionate," he said.

After the adoption of the resolution, the US, Britain, France and Germany urged Iran "to fulfil its legal obligations, and cooperate with the IAEA".

Iran struck a deal with major powers in 2015 setting limits to its nuclear activities in return for relief from international sanctions -- but the agreement has been in disarray since then US president Donald Trump abandoned the agreement three years later and reimposed sanctions.

In response, Iran began rolling back on its commitments under the deal from 2019.

Talks began in April last year on reviving the agreement through the lifting of US sanctions and Iran returning to full compliance but they have stalled in recent months.

Iran hanged 12 inmates, including a woman, in a day in Zahedan prison in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, a human rights group has said amid concerns over rising number of executions in the Islamic republic.

The inmates hanged on Monday were convicted of drug-related or murder charges, AFP has reported citing Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) said.

According to reports, the executed people were Baluchis, a minority people living in Iran’s south-east bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Of the 12, six were convicted for drug-related charges and the rest for murder. None of the executions had been reported by domestic media or confirmed by officials in Iran, it said.

Sistan-Baluchestan is the country’s second-largest but least developed province. Sunni Muslim Baluchis make up the majority of the province’s population. There have been reports of widespread discrimination against minorities, especially in employment.

“Data gathered by Iran Human Rights shows that Baluch prisoners accounted for 21 per cent of all executions in 2021, while only representing 2–6 per cent of Iran's population," IHR added.

There has also been concern over a recent upsurge of executions in Iran, as the country's leaders are confronted with protests over price rises for basic goods.

Earlier this month, Amnesty International’s annual report on worldwide use of the death penalty showed Iran as a country with a “disturbing spike” in executions.

The 66-page report found Iran executed at least 314 people in 2021, a 28 per cent jump from at least 246 in 2020 and the highest figure since 2017. Amnesty said that in Iran “death sentences were disproportionately used against members of ethnic minorities.”

#Iran: 12 Baluch minorities were executed in Zahedan Central Prison on 6 June. 5 men and a woman were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder and 6 men were sentenced to death for drug-related charges. Iran carries out mass execution of 12 ethnic Baluch minorities in a day: Report

A passenger train travelling through eastern Iran struck an excavator and nearly half its cars derailed before dawn on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people and injuring 87, officials said.

The derailment near the desert city of Tabas was the latest disaster to strike the Islamic Republic in recent weeks as Tehran struggles under US sanctions and any return to its nuclear deal with world powers remains in doubt.

The train, operated by the state-run Islamic Republic Railway, carried some 350 people as it travelled from the town of Tabas, some 550 km (340 miles) southeast of Tehran, to the city of Yazd.

The route had began as an overnight train out of Iran's holy city of Mashhad.

Based on images after the crash, it appeared the train's locomotive passed the excavator and the later cars somehow hit the digger and caused the derailment, though authorities did not immediately explain how the disaster happened in the rural scrubland near a railway bridge.

Passengers were bouncing in the car like balls in the air, one unnamed injured passenger told Iranian state television.
The state-run IRNA news agency gave the casualty figures, citing emergency officials.

Rescue teams with ambulances and helicopters arrived in the remote area where communication is poor. Over a dozen people suffered critical injuries, with some transferred to local hospitals, officials said.

Aerial footage of the desert site of the disaster showed train cars on their side, with some rescuers running at the scene as they tried to care for those injured.

State TV later aired images from a hospital where the injured received treatment. One of those injured told the broadcaster they felt the train suddenly brake and then slow before the derailment.

The incident happened some 50 km (30 miles) outside of Tabas.

The report said the crash is under investigation. Initial reports suggested the train collided with an excavator near the track, though it wasn't immediately clear why an excavator would have been close to the train track in the dark.

One official suggested it could have been part of a repair project.

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi offered condolences over the crash and announced an investigation would be undertaken into its causes.

Iran's worst train disaster came in 2004, when a runaway train loaded with gasoline, fertilizer, sulfur and cotton crashed near the historic city of Neyshabur, killing some 320 people, injuring 460 others and damaging five villages.

In 2016, a train collision in northern Iran killed at least 43 people and injured about 100.

Iran has some 14,000 km (8,700 miles) of railway lines throughout the country that's about two and a half times the size of Texas.

Its rail system sends both people and goods across the country, particularly in rural areas.

Iran also has some 17,000 annual deaths on its highways, one of the world's worst traffic safety records.

The high toll is blamed on wide disregard for traffic laws, unsafe vehicles and inadequate emergency services.

Iran, already straining under US sanctions over its collapsed nuclear deal, has been mourning the deaths of at least 41 people killed in a building collapse in May in the city of Abadan in the country's southwest.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday blamed recent protests in Iran on foreign “enemies” seeking to overthrow the government in the Islamic Republic.

Also, he said, enemies were waging a “psychological war” against Iran by accusing it of piracy for seizing two Greek ships after the United States confiscated Iranian oil from a tanker.

"Today, the enemies’ most important hope for striking a blow at the country is based on popular protests,” Khamenei said, referring to week-long protests over the collapse of a building in southwestern Iran last month that killed 37 people.

"But the enemies’ calculation is as wrong as many earlier ones," he said in a televised speech on the 33rd anniversary of the death of the leader of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Authorities have blamed the collapse of the 10-storey residential and commercial building in Abadan on local corruption and lax safety and say 13 people, including mayors and other officials, have so far been arrested for construction violations.

'Enemies' triggering unrest in Iran to overthrow Islamic Republic: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will be on India visit next week, with key focus expected to be on connectivity especially via Chabahar port, and on the situation on Afghanistan. This will be Amir-Abdollahian's first visit ever to India since taking charge last year. He was expected to visit India earlier this year, but that got postponed as External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar was confirmed with covid.

Chabahar remains the key focus area of engagement as India is developing the 1st Phase of Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar. After operations began at the Chabahar port in December 2018, the port has handled more than 8200 TEUs and 1.28 million tonnes of bulk cargo.

Last month both the foreign ministers had telephonic conversation in which EAM invited the Iranian counterpart to visit Delhi. During the conversation, both the ministers discussed situation in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Ukraine.

US to back IAEA resolution in spite of Iranian resistance

Iran on Tuesday lashed out at a report by UN nuclear watchdog as "not fair". The report by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mentions traces of nuclear material found at three undeclared sites.

"Unfortunately, this report does not reflect the reality of the negotiations between Iran and the IAEA," Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters, referring to the Monday report by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"It's not a fair and balanced report," he said, adding: "We expect this path to be corrected."

The development has taken place as talks to revive 2015 nuclear deal remain deadlocked. The 2015 nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers. It put limitations on Iran's atomic programme but gave it relief by lifting of sanctions.

In 2018, former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took the US out of the deal.

In IAEA's report, the watchdog has said that it has questions which were "not clarified" regarding nuclear material previously found at three sites -- Marivan, Varamin and Turquzabad -- which had not been declared by Iran as having hosted nuclear activities.

It said its long-running efforts to get Iranian officials to explain the presence of nuclear material had failed to provide answers to its questions.

Iran and the IAEA agreed in March on an approach for resolving the issue of the sites, one of the remaining obstacles to reviving the 2015 deal. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi is due to "report his conclusions" to the watchdog's board of governors at a meeting scheduled for next week.
