The re-implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement shouldn't be contingent on determining whether Tehran has complied with its Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) responsibilities, said the White House on Friday.

In reference to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigations into uranium traces discovered at three unauthorised Iranian sites, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that there shouldn't be any conditions placed on the re-implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

This week, Iran's foreign minister stated that the United Nations nuclear watchdog should cease its "politically motivated probes" into Tehran's nuclear activities.

It is difficult to revive the 2015 agreement known as JCPOA, under which Iran limited its atomic programme in exchange for the lifting of United States, United Nations, and European Union (EU) sanctions. Washington has consistently claimed that these investigations are a separate matter.

Iran responded to an EU suggestion on how to resurrect the accord, which then-US president Donald Trump abandoned in 2018, on Thursday. Iran claimed the agreement was too benevolent to Iran. The Iranian Navy reportedly seized two US unmanned drone vessels for a brief period in the Red Sea before releasing them, in the second such incident this week.

According to state TV, the Iranian navy's "Jamaran destroyer encountered several American military unmanned research vessels on the international shipping route on Thursday while carrying out a counter-terrorism mission in the Red Sea.”

It added that the navy, "after warning an American destroyer twice, seized the two drone vessels to prevent possible accidents".

The navy then released two vessels in a safe area after securing the passage of international shipping, the state broadcaster said, while airing the clip of the two purported US vessels being released by Iranian forces on board a ship, AFP reported.

Confirming the development, the US Navy said its drone vessels were taking pictures of the surrounding environment and had been in the vicinity of the southern Red Sea for more than 200 days.

"At around 2 pm (local time) on Sept. 1, U.S. 5th Fleet detected the Iranian ship approaching both unmanned vessels and removing them from the water," the US Navy said in a statement.

The statement added that the two destroyers operating nearby—the USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black—"remained on scene communicating with the Iranian warship to de-escalate the situation".

The statement further stated that the US Navy vessels were released at around 8 am the following day.

The recent incident comes in the backdrop of nuclear negotiations with Iran that appear to be faltering.

The US said it received Iran's response to the European Union's framework to restore the nuclear deal, but officials in a statement termed Iran's response as " not constructive."

Iran has submitted a document to the European Union (EU) seeking to finalise the 2015 nuclear accord with world powers, The Guardian has reported.

Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, has reportedly said that the latest text submitted on Friday presented “a constructive approach with the aim of finalising the negotiations”.

The latest Iranian document is part of the series of exchanges with the US via mediators from the EU aimed at tweaking a draft agreement presented on August 8.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Wednesday had hoped for a resolution within days to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.

Tehran gave its first response to the draft on August 15, which was followed by a response from Washington.

Meanwhile, the US has confirmed receiving the latest response from Iran on reviving the nuclear deal, however it found the text not "constructive".

"We can confirm that we have received Iran's response through the EU," US state department spokesman Vedant Patel was quoted as saying by AFP late Thursday in Washington.

Iran sends ‘constructive’ response to finalise nuclear deal, US rejects it

Iran wants stronger guarantees included in the text put forward by the EU aiming to salvage Tehran's landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Wednesday.

"We are thinking about how to reach a strong text on the issue of the guarantee, and to obtain stronger guarantees," he told a joint news conference in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"My colleagues are carefully examining the text of the American side," Amir-Abdollahian said of Washington's response to Tehran's suggestions on the EU text that was submitted on August 8.

"We want to reinforce in the text the idea that the International Atomic Energy Agency concentrates on its technical task and moves away from its political role," he said.

The United States had been adamant that Tehran cooperate with the IAEA to clear up suspicions about earlier work at three undeclared sites.

In June, the IAEA's board of governors adopted a resolution censuring Iran for failing to adequately explain the previous discovery of traces of enriched uranium at three sites not declared by Tehran as having hosted nuclear activities.

On Monday, President Ebrahim Raisi said reviving the atomic deal would be pointless unless the UN nuclear watchdog put an end to its probe of three undeclared sites in the Islamic republic.

The 2015 accord between Iran and six world powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- gave Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.

Formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the agreement aimed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon -- something it has always denied wanting to do.

But the US unilaterally withdrew from the deal under then president Donald Trump in 2018 and proceeded to reimpose biting sanctions, prompting Tehran to pull back from its own commitments.

Last week, amid rising hopes of a revived deal, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi in an interview with CNN rejected the idea of the agency closing its probe on the undeclared sites without receiving answers.

"When it comes to guarantees, resolving outstanding issues related to the IAEA is also of serious concern to us," Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday.

"If we can reinforce the existing text, reaching an agreement will not be far from being achieved," he added.

Iran says it wants stronger guarantees to salvage landmark 2015 nuclear deal

Iranian state media reported on Friday said that Tehran's naval flotilla briefly seized two American military unmanned research vessels in the Red Sea.

While carrying out a counter-terrorism mission, the Iranian navy's "Jamaran destroyer encountered several American military unmanned research vessels on the international shipping route".

Issuing a justification, Iran's state broadcaster said "After securing the passage of international shipping, the flotilla released the two vessels in a safe area."

After a US Navy patrol boat and helicopter were deployed to the location, the American military drone vessel was released, according to the Pentagon.

The seven-metre (23-foot) Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel was towed by a support ship from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy as per the US Central Command.

United States Navy's two drone vessels seized by Iran in Red Sea amid tensions

The United States has received a new response from Iran on reviewing the nuclear deal to which the US thinks is 'not constructive'. This is the latest back and forth between the adversaries via mediators in European Union.

US: New Iran response 'not constructive', declines to discuss details publicly

According to the White House, President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday that the United States would never permit Iran to develop nuclear weapons. Washington is being sought after by Tehran for stronger guarantees in order to revive a nuclear agreement with major powers.

Israel is against going back to the 2015 agreement, which put restrictions on Iran's nuclear weapons programme in exchange for the relaxation of sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, and the UN on Tehran.

To Israel's pleasure, the deal's nuclear restrictions were broken by Tehran once former president Donald Trump withdrew from it and reinstituted heavy penalties in 2018. In order to protect Israel, which is Iran's main adversary in the region, Biden has committed to resurrecting the accord.

In a call where Biden and Lapid also discussed "threats posed by Iran," the President "underscored US commitment to never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon," the White House said in a statement.

The statement stated that Biden stressed the significance of finalising talks on Israel and Lebanon's maritime border.

They "spoke at length about the negotiations on a nuclear agreement and their shared commitment to stopping Iran’s progress towards a nuclear weapon," according to Lapid's office in its own readout of the call.

In March, it seemed like the nuclear agreement may be revived. Iranian demands that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) end its investigations into uranium traces found at three unreported sites before the nuclear accord is revived caused indirect discussions between Tehran and Washington to break down.

In July, Biden and Lapid jointly vowed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, demonstrating their allies' unity after years of disagreement on how to approach Tehran diplomatically. But Lapid asserted last week that Israel will not be obligated by the 2015 agreement if it is restored.

Iran is pressing ahead with its rollout of an upgrade to its advanced uranium enrichment programme, a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog seen by Reuters on Monday showed, even as the West awaits Iran's response on salvaging its 2015 nuclear deal.

The first of three cascades, or clusters, of advanced IR-6 centrifuges recently installed at the underground Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) at Natanz is now enriching, the report said, the latest underground site at which the advanced machines have come onstream.

Diplomats say the IR-6 is its most advanced model, far more efficient than the first-generation IR-1 - the only one the deal lets it enrich with.

For more than a year Iran has been using IR-6 centrifuges to enrich uranium to up to 60% purity, close to weapons-grade, at an above-ground plant at Natanz.

Recently it has expanded its enrichment with IR-6 machines at other sites. Last month a second IR-6 cascade at Fordow, a site buried inside a mountain, started enriching to up to 20%.

In the confidential report to U.N. member states, the watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote: "On 28 August 2022, the Agency verified at FEP that Iran was feeding UF6 enriched up to 2% U-235 into the IR-6 cascade ... for the production of UF6 enriched up to 5% U-235."

Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) is the gas centrifuges enrich.

Of the two other IR-6 cascades installed at the Natanz FEP, one was undergoing passivation with depleted UF6, a process that is carried out before enrichment proper begins, and the other had yet to be fed with any nuclear material, the agency said.

Iran and the United States appear to be inching towards an agreement to revive the 2015 deal, which placed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting sanctions against Tehran. That deal unravelled after a U.S. withdrawal in 2018 prompted Iran to breach those restrictions one by one.

After more than a year of indirect talks, Iran has said it will soon respond to the latest U.S. comments on a compromise text submitted by the European Union, which is coordinating the talks.

A deal would involve undoing much of the enrichment work Iran has been doing, and capping its enrichment at 3.67% purity.

Its installation of advanced machines at underground sites like Natanz and Fordow, however, could be a signal to any power that might want to attack it if there is no agreement, since it is unclear that airstrikes on those sites would be effective.

Western powers worry that Iran is moving towards the ability to make nuclear bombs. Iran denies any such intention.

WION Dispatch: Iran inching closer to enriching nukes? IAEA's shocking report amidst nuke deal talks

Iran is reviewing the United States’ response to an EU-drafted agreement that would restore the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and Western nations. As speculations over the revival of the nuke deal continue to mount, Israel has now said that its spy chief will meet US officials and will participate in closed-door meetings.

Iran: US response to EU's text will likely lead to new talks

Influential Iraqi Shi'ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr on Monday took to Twitter to announce his full withdrawal from political life. The move was surprising for many as his protesters have been blocking parliament for weeks now.

"I've decided not to meddle in political affairs. I, therefore, announce now my definitive retirement," read Sadr's tweet where he also announced that he was shutting his political offices and institutions in the country, following an unsalvagable political deadlock.

According to an AFP report, live fire rocked Baghdad's Green Zone area in the evening as Sadr's supporters stormed the area. Witnesses on the ground stated that the shots were fired by supporters of the rival Shi'ite bloc. Moreover, security forces also fired tear gas canisters to disperse the supporters of both groups.

Why the protest?

As reported extensively by WION, Sadr and his legion of supporters have been on the streets of Iraq, protesting for months and batting for the dissolution of the parliament.

Reportedly, in the October parliamentary election last year, Sadr’s supporters had won the most seats. However, they were unable to form a government and since then, the country has been in a deadlock.

Moreover, Sadr calling for the resignation en-masse of his parliamentary bloc has provided the initiative to his Iran-backed Shia opponents, the Coordination Framework Alliance.

2015 Nuclear Talks: Iran reviewing US nuclear deal response

Israeli spy chief to meet US officials, ramps up pressure over Iran Nuclear deal

Iran is 'closely reviewing' America's response to a final draft of the nuclear deal. Europe's top diplomat claims a new deal is just days away. What are the key points of the new agreement? How will it affect west Asian politics? Palki Sharma tells you.

Gravitas: Iran, US inch closer to reviving nuclear deal

As momentum grows for the revival of a 2015 nuclear deal, Iran's top diplomat on Thursday demanded that the UN nuclear watchdog abandon the matter of three undeclared sites.

The International Atomic Energy Agency needs Tehran's cooperation to dispel doubts about past activities at three unreported locations, and the United States is insistent about this.

The board of governors of the IAEA adopted a resolution denouncing Iran in June for failing to effectively respond to the earlier finding of traces of enriched uranium at three locations that Tehran had not acknowledged as having hosted nuclear operations.

"We are very serious about safeguard issues, and do not want to allow some of the IAEA's baseless accusations to remain," Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said, state news agency IRNA reported.

According to an Iranian diplomat reported by IRNA, the incident is "political in character, and should not be used as a pretext to punish Iran," poisoning relations between the IAEA and the Islamic Republic.

The remarks follow an American response to Iranian suggestions for restoring the historic accord that former president Donald Trump had criticised.

"We are in the process of examining the response of the Americans," Amir-Abdollahian said.

Just a few weeks after it appeared that the agreement was dead, the European Union put forth on August 8 what it called a final text to revive it. Under this text, Iran would receive relief from sanctions and be allowed to sell its oil once more in exchange for strict limitations on its nuclear programme.

The United States officially responded to Iran's last week's suggested modifications on Wednesday, a day after Tehran accused its longtime foe of obstruction.

The foreign ministry of Iran said that the country has received a response from the United States on Wednesday to its suggestions on the final European Union draft for the renewal of the 2015 nuclear deal.

The declaration comes a day after Washington claimed that Iran had agreed to relax important conditions that had prevented the resumption of the 2015 agreement that former president Donald Trump had slammed.

A day before, Tehran had blasted the US for being reluctant to respond to its offers.

"Tehran received this evening via the (EU) coordinator, the response from the US government over the Islamic Republic of Iran's opinions on the outstanding issues in the negotiations to lift sanctions," Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said, as reported by AFP.

"The process of carefully reviewing the US opinions has begun, and the Islamic Republic of Iran will announce its opinion in this context to the coordinator after it completes its review," Kanani added, without providing further details.

Iran provided its suggestions last week over the final text that the EU, which has coordinated discussions in Vienna on renewing the treaty, sent on August 8.

Washington also acknowledged that it had responded to Iran's offers following Tehran's statement.

Iran receives US response on final European Union draft for revival of 2015 nuclear deal

A US official said on Tuesday (August 23) that Iran was dropping demands to block some nuclear inspections. These are the latest concessions the Islamic Republic will be making towards revival of 2015 nuclear deal.

The nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers including the US in 2015. However, former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took the country out of the pact in 2018. Negotiations have been going on to restore the deal which was hailed as landmark deal when it was inked.

Iran is also relaxing its insistence that Washington remove the powerful Revolutionary Guards from a terrorism blacklist, a key dispute in indirect negotiations that had stalled after a year and a half.

Iran has been combative recently over the issue of inspection of some of its nuclear plants.

In June, Iran disconnected a number of IAEA cameras after the UN body's board censured Tehran for not adequately explaining previous traces of uranium.

A senior official in President Joe Biden's administration said Iran has "made concessions on critical issues" and that reports of new US compromises were "categorically false."

"In addition to the nuclear constraints Iran would have to implement, the IAEA would again be able to implement the most comprehensive inspections regime ever negotiated, allowing it to detect any Iranian effort to pursue a nuclear weapon covertly," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"Much of that international monitoring would remain in place for an unlimited amount of time."

Iran eased demands for nuclear deal, says US official

According to US officials, Iran has dropped demand to remove IRGC terror designation. As per reports, Defense Minister of Israel Benny Gantz will meet US defence officials this week and recently he said, Israel will do everything it can to stop the deal.

Iran nuclear deal: US, Iran inch closer to nuclear deal?

On Monday, Iran accused the United States of dragging its feet in efforts to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers. Washington rejected this accusation and claimed that a deal was closer than two weeks ago as a result of apparent Iranian flexibility.

After 16 months of intermittent, indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran, during which time EU representatives alternated between the two sides, a senior EU official announced on August 8 that the EU had made a final offer and anticipated hearing back in "very, very few weeks."

Iran provided "additional views and considerations" in response to the EU's letter last week and urged the US to be flexible in resolving the remaining three issues.

Josep Borrell, the head of foreign affairs for the EU, expressed optimism that the United States will accept the bloc's plan as early as this week and noted that Iran had responded in a "reasonable" manner.

Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, said during a news conference that "America and Europe need an agreement more than Iran" because of the procrastination of the Americans and the passivity of the European sides.

Ned Price, a spokesperson for the US state department, refuted that claim, telling reporters in Washington that it was "just not true."

According to Price, the United States was heartened that Iran appeared to have withdrawn demands like having its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps removed from the list of foreign terrorist organisations on the United States.

"That's part of the reason why a deal is closer now than it was two weeks ago. But the outcome of these ongoing discussions still remains uncertain as gaps do remain,"Price said, adding that the US was moving as swiftly as it could to offer its reply.

Iranian-Americans detained in Iran on security-related allegations have been urged to leave by Washington. Iran has sought the release of seven Iranians jailed on suspicion of violating American sanctions.

Tehran is prepared to exchange inmates, Kanaani said, adding that it is a separate matter and has nothing to do with the ongoing talks to resurrect the 2015 agreement.

Protests in Iran after woman arrested for 'improper clothing'

The United Arab Emirates said Sunday that its ambassador to Tehran would resume duties within days, six years after ties were downgraded in support of Saudi Arabia.

Ambassador Saif Mohammed al-Zaabi "will resume his duties at the UAE embassy in the Islamic republic of Iran in the coming days to contribute to further advancing bilateral relations", the Emirati foreign ministry said in a statement.

The move seeks to "achieve the common interests of the two countries and the wider region", it added.

With Middle East political alignments shifting, UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash in mid-July called for an easing of regional tensions and signalled the ambassador's possible return.
