<p>The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is set to take place in Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia, on Nov 24-25, as per reports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is, thus, set to host the IPL auction outside India for the second time in a row, and Riyadh is being considered for the two-day mega event. The previous auction took place in Dubai. A final decision, along with dates, is expected to be out soon.</p>

<p>However, a&nbsp;potential issue before the BCCI authorities is that the proposed dates coincide with India's five-match Test series opener versus Australia, in Perth. <p>All 10 IPL teams are allowed to retain a maximum of six players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, of which a maximum of five can be capped internationals, leaving room for an uncapped player.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides, the IPL has set the minimum deduction from the purse auction for each player retained (order wise) – with the first player to cost a franchise INR 18 crore, the second INR 14 crore, INR 11 crore for the third one, INR 18 crore for the next, and INR 14 crore for the fifth and final player, though the teams are free to pay more than these figures to their retained players.</p>

<p>"It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs," the IPL release said. "The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players and a maximum of two uncapped players."</p>

"It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs," the IPL release said. When are the mega auctions? Yet to be confirmed, the IPL mega-auctions could take place in the third or fourth week of November. As expected, it will be a two-day auctions process with hundreds of players going under the hammer. Like IPL 2024 mini auctions, the mega auctions for this season is also expected to be held overseas, with the United Kingdom being one of the names in the hat.

<p>Newly-appointed Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting revealed what attracted him to accept their offer despite interests from several teams ahead of IPL 2025. Ponting, who previously coached Delhi Capitals for seven seasons, detailed what he told his new team owners and shared his thoughts on retention plans as the mega auction date nears.</p>

<p>Of all the IPL teams since the inaugural edition, Punjab Kings is among the three franchises (DC and RCB) that are yet to put their hands on the trophy. However, Ponting, who expressed keenness in taking over the job, with the willingness and aim to turn the tables around come next season, revealed plenty needs to be done behind the scenes to ensure PBKS takes home the IPL trophy.</p>

<p>Putting it under ‘Project Punjab’, Punter, as cricket fans call him, revealed the youngsters and the talent pool in PBKS dressing attracted him and that working with them to come on top looked like a challenge, which he willingly accepted.</p>

<p>“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was 'Project Punjab'&nbsp;which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL,” Ponting said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Picking a captain is a priority for me’ – Ponting</strong></h2>

<p>Ricky was blunt and honest in his acceptance of informing the owners to interfere less, letting the coaches and the captain take charge of what would happen on the field. Though he openly talked about having accountability and autonomy within the group, Ponting feels picking the right man to lead does half of the job.</p>

<p>When asked about his role in picking a captain at the upcoming mega auction, Ponting said irrespective of whether the player is an Indian or overseas, he needs the right man for the right job.</p>

<p>“With this mega auction coming up, either we have to decide to retain someone in our current group that we think is the best person for the job, or we have to go into the auction looking for the best possible candidate, whether that's an Indian or overseas player.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“And make sure that him and I work together. If the captain and coach are on the same page and work together, that's when the magic happens,” he continued.&nbsp;</p>

<h3><strong>Ponting on IPL retention rules</strong></h3>

<p>The BCCI will formally announce the revised retention rules ahead of the mega auction, and Ponting feels plenty of work needs to be done to have a settled unit at the helm. Although Ponting disagrees with the ‘more retention is better for the team’ policy, he still backs the current lot of players to help PBKS realise its dream of winning the title.</p>

<p>“It is going to depend on the retention numbers. Say, if it's eight players, then all of a sudden that's 80 players [retained, if all ten teams retain that many].&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There's not going to be a lot of quality players left in the auction, so putting together a squad then would be more difficult. The more the numbers come down on retention, the easier it's going be to put a squad of players together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In this current Kings group, you think of some of the young Indian players they have: Prabhsimran [Singh], Ashutosh [Sharma], Shashank [Singh], Jitesh [Sharma], Arshdeep [Singh], Harpreet Brar, Harshal [Patel]. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge. “The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL. “I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL,” Ponting said. ‘Picking a captain is a priority for me’ – Ponting Ricky was blunt and honest in his acceptance of informing the owners to interfere less, letting the coaches and the captain take charge of what would happen on the field. Though he openly talked about having accountability and autonomy within the group, Ponting feels picking the right man to lead does half of the job. If the captain and coach are on the same page and work together, that's when the magic happens,” he continued. The more the numbers come down on retention, the easier it's going be to put a squad of players together. “In this current Kings group, you think of some of the young Indian players they have: Prabhsimran [Singh], Ashutosh [Sharma], Shashank [Singh], Jitesh [Sharma], Arshdeep [Singh], Harpreet Brar, Harshal [Patel]. Ponting left his job as DC head coach following IPL 2024, while Sangakkara’s RR appointed Rahul Dravid as their new head coach. Ponting, however, expressed his interest in coaching an IPL franchise sooner. BCCI yet to release revised IPL auction rules Following a high-profile meeting that included owners and stakeholders of all ten IPL teams, where everyone shared their thoughts on the retention list and Right to Match (RTM) card, the BCCI has yet to release the revised rules. Per the previous rules exercised during the last mega auction in 2022, each team had four retentions, with the IPL council and BCCI removing the RTM card then. However, ahead of the next mega auction, scheduled for December 2024, the ones having their bases set and tasted success have pushed for more retentions, somewhere around six or seven, while others have opted for no retentions. <p>More than two months after leading Team India to its second T20 World Cup title in the Americas, Dravid returned to his former franchise, for whom he played, captained and mentored before.</p>

<p>After his first stint with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (as a player) from 2008 to 2010, Dravid played for Rajasthan Royals for the next three years (from 2011 to 2013) and later, in 2014, served as their mentor. He then walked out of the IPL circuit, taking over the head coach role with India-A and India U-19 teams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Under his tutelage in 2018, the India U-19 men's team won the World Cup. In 2021, three years later, he became the Team India head coach, replacing Ravi Shastri.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although India played three ICC finals under him – the 2023 WTC Final, 2023 ODI World Cup Final and 2024 T20 World Cup Final, they lost two and won the last one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India also won the 2023 Asia Cup under his guidance.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, at the RR from next season onwards, Dravid will work closely with RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, who coached the franchise for four years until recently.</p>

<p>"Rahul is one of the greatest players to have played the game, but what he has achieved over the past decade as a coach is extraordinary. The characteristics that he possesses as a coach to nurture talent but also enable them to consistently perform at the highest level will allow the Rajasthan Royals to further challenge for the title," Sangakkara said at Dravid’s appointment as RR’s new head coach.</p>

<p>"I've already had some meaningful conversations with him about his vision for this team, and he is looking forward to delivering the results for the Royals,” he continued.</p>

<h2><strong>‘I am pleased to be returning home’</strong></h2>

<p>Dravid spoke his heart out upon his return to the franchise he once called ‘home’.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am pleased to be returning to the franchise I have called 'home' for a number of years in the past," Dravid said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"After the World Cup, I feel it's the ideal time for me to take on another challenge, and the Royals is the perfect place to do that.</p>

<p>"A lot of hard work and deliberations from Manoj, Jake, Kumar and the team has gone into the progression that the franchise has made over the past few years. It's an exciting opportunity for us to take this team to the next level given the kind of talent and resources we have at our disposal, and I'm looking forward to getting started,” he concluded.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Dravid, who has already resumed work at the franchise, will be tasked to chalk out the retention plan once the BCCI publicly announces revised rules.&nbsp;</p>
