The so-called ‘backbone network’ spans more than 3,000 kilometres of optical fibre cabling and runs through major Chinese cities like the capital Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou and can transmit data at astonishing speeds which is 10 times faster than existing major routes.&nbsp;

While the cables were activated in July, they were officially launched on Monday (Nov 13) after their performance was deemed reliable and passed all operational tests.&nbsp;

It is worth noting that the network boasts a speed of 1,200 gigabits per second while most major internet networks in the world operate at just 100 gigabits per second. While the United States recently completed the transition to its fifth-generation Internet2 at 400 gigabits per second.

Huawei and China Mobile officially launched the next-generation backbone network which was created in partnership with Beijing’s Tsinghua University and Cernet. The education and research network is reportedly funded by the Chinese government.&nbsp;

The network is said to play a pivotal role in China’s decade-long initiative of Future Internet Technology Infrastructure.&nbsp;

Speaking about the speed, Tsinghua University’s Xu Mingwei compared the new internet backbone to a superfast train track that had replaced the 10 regular tracks that used to carry the same amount of data which also leads to a more cost-effective and manageable system, reported the SCMP.

President Xi Jinping had previously said that the development of the backbone network would establish the country as “a cyber power” and “accelerate the promotion of core Internet technologies,” reported CNN citing a statement by the Chinese tech manufacturer Huawei.&nbsp;

However, the company did not say if the network would be expanded to the rest of the country.

<h2>India’s 5G push behind better mobile download speed</h2>

According to the report, India achieved this feat because of the launch of 5G services in the country. The country’s speed performance has seen a 3.59 times increase since the introduction of 5G, said the report.&nbsp;

The median download speeds improved to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023, from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022.&nbsp;

"This improvement has led to India's rise in the Speedtest Global Index, moving up 72 places, from 119th place to the 47th position," the index said.

Australian court orders three telecom companies to pay $22.08 million for making false internet speed claims

Three Australian telecom companies will have to shell out millions in fines as a court has held them liable for misleading claims about some NBN internet plans. The companies will have to pay a collective A$33.5 million ($22.08 million) in penalties.

The Australian Federal Court has ordered Telstra to pay A$15 million, a unit of TPG Telecom to cough up A$5 million, and imposed a fine of A$13.5 million on Optus, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications, the Australian Competition &amp; Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

ACCC said that the false or misleading statements were made for at least 12 months in 2019. The claims possibly continued until 2020. These claims were related to their 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps fibre to the node plans.

The regulator said that all three telcos have admitted in court to&nbsp;having made false or misleading statements. The ACCC said that nearly 120,000 customers were affected due to these claims.

Telstra said in a statement that between April 2019 and April 2020 it failed to verify the maximum attainable speed of the NBN services ordered by around 48,000 customers either completely or within a reasonable period after connection.

NBN, or National Broadband Network, is a government-run broadband network.

"We've gone through an extensive remediation and refund process. We've also taken a number of steps to ensure we better meet our regulatory obligations," Telstra added.

Optus and TPG Telecom spokespersons, in separate emailed responses to Reuters, said the companies have made changes to their systems and processes to address the concerns raised by the proceedings.

The Australian Federal Court has ordered Telstra to pay A$15 million, a unit of TPG Telecom to cough up A$5 million, and imposed a fine of A$13.5 million on Optus, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said. ACCC said that the false or misleading statements were made for at least 12 months in 2019. The claims possibly continued until 2020. These claims were related to their 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps fibre to the node plans. The regulator said that all three telcos have admitted in court to having made false or misleading statements. The ACCC said that nearly 120,000 customers were affected due to these claims. Telstra said in a statement that between April 2019 and April 2020 it failed to verify the maximum attainable speed of the NBN services ordered by around 48,000 customers either completely or within a reasonable period after connection. NBN, or National Broadband Network, is a government-run broadband network. "We've gone through an extensive remediation and refund process. We've also taken a number of steps to ensure we better meet our regulatory obligations," Telstra added. Optus and TPG Telecom spokespersons, in separate emailed responses to Reuters, said the companies have made changes to their systems and processes to address the concerns raised by the proceedings. With the roll out of 5G technology, the world will be entering a new era of internet speeds but researchers in Japan have achieved data transmission speeds that are almost 100,000 times faster than 5G. The Network Research Institute at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) claimed the world record by completing data transmission at an astonishing speed of 1.02 petabit (PB) per second. That roughly translated into 125,000 Gigabytes (GB) per second, and it can be transmitted over a distance of about over 51.7 km.

The feat was achieved by using optic fibres which were 0.125mm in diameter and the NICT described the massive achievement as “a major step towards the realisation of ultra-high-throughput optical links... compatible with existing cabling technologies for near-term adoption.”

The previous record also belonged to NICT with 1 petabit per second which was achieved in 2020.

100,000 times faster than 5G! Japan researchers claim data transmission world record

Researchers in Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology recently set a new world record for the world's fastest internet speed at 319 Terabytes &nbsp;per second (Tbps).

The long-haul transfer of data took place over 3,001 kilometres.

This record marks speeds twice as fast as the previous one set by researchers from the University College of London with 178 Tbps.

319 Tbps&nbsp;is a remarkably fast speed for transfer of data online. One terabyte (TB) contains 1,000 gigabytes (GB). Most home connections are based on megabits per second (Mbps). A 1 GBPS internet connection is 10 times faster than Mbps&nbsp;connectivity and equal to at least 1,000 Mbps.

What can you do with 319 Tbps?

What 319 terabytes per second mean: Forget downloading Netflix's whole catalogue. This speed is too quick for even the platform's vast offerings, which could download everything as soon you as tap the download button. With the previous record of 178 Tbps, all of Netflix could be downloaded in less than a second. You can only imagine the speeds!

319 Tbps&nbsp;is an extraordinary speed for internet. It means that 57,000 full-length films can be downloaded in less than a second. This is just in theory. In practice, no single user would be able to download 57,000 films in one go per second.

All of Spotify's catalogue can be downloaded in less than three seconds with 319 Tbps!&nbsp;But these speeds are not commercially available and need supporting infrastructure.&nbsp;

In fact, people in Pakistan enjoy faster internet with an average 4G speed of 14 Mbps.

In fact, India scored a little better in November last year. But the rank has now gone down. In November, India was found to be offering an average 4G download speed of 6.13 Mbps, which has now declined to 6.07 Mbps.

&nbsp;It&rsquo;s just not India, other countries like Algeria, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand rank among the top 5 countries with slowest 4G speeds.

On the other hand, Singapore, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea and Hungary have been listed as top 5 countries that offer the fastest downloads on 4G.

Opensignal has found that in the fastest countries, the average LTE download speeds have got stalled at 45 Mbps. In other words, no country has yet been able to crack the 50 Mbps mark.

But before you hold telecom operators alone responsible for it, let&rsquo;s understand that there is more to than what meets the eye. There are a lot of factors that cause patchy connections and lead to substandard internet speeds in India.
