Leading tech company Intel’s South Asia division former director Avtar Singh Saini, who had majorly contributed to the Pentium processor's design and development, died in a fatal crash in Navi Mumbai, India, on Wednesday (Feb 28).

He was cycling in the early hours of Wednesday on Palm Beach Road when a speeding taxi rammed into his bicycle, said the police.

<h2>How did the fatal accident happen?</h2>

Sixty-eight-year-old Saini was a passionate cyclist. The NRI had planned to travel back to the US next month.

At around 5:50 am (local time), Saini along with his fellow cyclists was cycling on the Palm Beach Road in Nerul. His fellow cyclists later informed that Saini's bicycle was hit from behind by a speeding taxi.

After that, the driver tried to escape and the frame of the cycle got wedged under the car which dragged Saini for some distance.

Saini, despite wearing a helmet, suffered severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.

His fellow cyclists caught hold of the cab driver and handed him over to the police, who filed a case of rash driving as well as causing death due to negligence against him. However, he has still not been arrested by the police.&nbsp;

<h2>Who was Avtar Singh Saini?</h2>

Avtar Singh Saini, apart from being a Pentium processor developer, was part of the CACG cycling group. He used to always wear safety gear while trekking or cycling, as per the other cyclists.

He spent 22 years at Intel during which he co-led the Pentium processor's development and also participated in the first phase of creation of the Itanium Processor, the 64-bit Intel microprocessors.&nbsp;

In January 2004, he left Intel and&nbsp;worked with various smaller, however, forward-thinking technology companies such as Montalvo Systems. He served as the Director of Indi,&nbsp;Operations at Montalvo Systems between 2005 and 2008.

Intel’s Pentium processor, which was released in March 1993, was the fifth generation in the x86 line of processors of the company.&nbsp;

Saini's son and daughter, who were living in the United States, were informed about the incident&nbsp;and are on their way to India.

“His other relatives who are based out of Mumbai had reached the hospital to claim the body. He had lost his wife a few years back to illness and he stayed alone in Chembur when he came to Mumbai,” said a police officer from NRI Coastal police station.

The first trial that came out of this dispute was heard in Waco, Texas. The jury awarded USD 2.18 billion to VLSI. It found that the patents VLSI acquired from Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors were infringed by Intel microprocessors.

Intel succeeds in overturning $2.18bn patent verdict, one of the largest in US

Apple unveiled new MacBook Pro, iMac computers and three new chips in an online event on Monday (Oct&nbsp;30). The tech giant has said that it has redesigned its graphics processing units (GPU). Chipmaker Nvidia dominates the market in this aspect.

The new M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will power the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops and new iMac desktops. The 14-inch MacBook Pro would start at USD 1599 and the price of the 16-inch version will start at USD 2499. The iMac desktop with the M3 family of chips will cost USD 1299 upwards.

Apple has seen an uptick in its Mac business. Reuters reported that the company has roughly doubled its market to almost 11 per cent since 2020. In that year, Apple parted ways with Intel and started the use of its own custom-designed chips.

The company said that the use of these new chips would be a first for laptops and desktops which use 3 nanometer manufacturing technology. This, said Apple, will give the chips better performance per watt of electricity used.

Apple officials, during the event, compared the performance of the new Macbooks and iMac to older Apple machines that had chips made by Intel. They sought to underline the processing speed customers would get when they upgrade their devices to the latest ones.

Tech heavyweights are boycotting Web Summit, Europe’s biggest technology event, after its CEO criticised Western support of Israel following deadly terrorist attacks by Hamas on October 7.

Intel and Siemens Thursday joined a growing list of companies and tech executives saying they won’t attend the event in solidarity with Israel. Intel said in a statement that it was “withdrawing from Web Summit.”

Siemens, which is a German engineering and manufacturing company, also echoed the same stance after having “reviewed the situation.”

So far, Y Combinator’s Garry Tan, Sequoia Capital’s Ravi Gupta and other prominent venture capitalists have also pulled out of the conference in support of Israel.

<h2>Israel boycotts the summit as well</h2>

Top leaders from Israel’s massive tech industry, which contributes to one-fifth of the country’s economic output, have also announced a boycott.

Ori Goshen, the co-founder and co-CEO of Tel Aviv-based AI21 Labs, took to LinkedIn to announce that he won’t “give the keynote” at the event because he “cannot be part of such indecency and moral bankruptcy.”

Dor Shapira, the ambassador of Israel to Portugal, wrote to the mayor of Lisbon informing him that Israel will not participate in the event, an update he shared on LinkedIn on Oct 16.

<h2>Controversial statement from Web Summit CEO</h2>

Nearly a week after the Oct 7 assault by Hamas on Israel, Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave expressed “shock” at the support Israel was getting from the West. He also rapped the West for not denouncing the Jewish nation for its “war crimes.”

However, after he saw his summit being jeopardised, he seemed to be staging a balancing act on Oct 17 when he issued a detailed apology for his statement.

The heads of MI5 and the FBI have issued an unprecedented joint warning, expressing concerns that the ongoing Middle East crisis could elevate the risk of domestic terrorist attacks, media reports said.&nbsp;British spy chief Ken McCallum has explicitly raised concerns over Iran-backed attacks.&nbsp;This warning includes potential dangers posed to Jewish communities, organisations, and other groups within the United Kingdom and the United States.

The acquisition of the Israeli firm served as the cornerstone of Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger’s strategy to enter the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), dominated foundry business, a sector of the semiconductor industry that is expanding more quickly. However, Tower has experience and clients that Intel does not, while having a relatively tiny presence in the market where companies build chips on a contract basis.&nbsp;

“We will continue to look for opportunities to work together” with Tower in the future, Bloomberg quoted Gelsinger as saying. &nbsp;

Intel will pay Tower a termination fee of $353 million.&nbsp;

When the settlement was announced, Intel stated that it would take “about 12 months.” The chipmaker stated in October that it was aiming for the first quarter of 2023, but in March it cautioned that the timeframe might shift to the second quarter.&nbsp;

The deal has to be completed by midnight on August 15 in California.&nbsp;

Securing approval for deals that need the consent of authorities in Beijing and Washington has grown more challenging due to the rising tension between the two countries, particularly for transactions involving semiconductors.&nbsp;

Despite having a smaller revenue in comparison to Intel and TSMC, Tower is active in the manufacturing of older types of chips for significant clients like Broadcom Inc. Intel’s strategy aimed to incorporate Tower’s clientele with aging plants in its network. Many new types of chips for applications like electric vehicles could be produced in these older facilities even if they do not necessitate the state-of-the-art manufacturing processes that an Intel or Nvidia Corp. requires. &nbsp;

Investors had already lowered their expectations for the deal. Compared to the overall growth in chip equities, Tower’s US-traded stock has fallen 22 per cent this year. As of Tuesday, it was at $33.78. Intel had made a share offer of $53.&nbsp;

According to a statement by Intel and Moore’s family philanthropic foundation, he died on Friday (March 24) surrounded by family at his home.&nbsp;

Moore and his longtime colleague Robert Noyce co-founded Intel in July 1968, where the former initially served as executive vice president until 1975, when he became president and also went on to become the chief executive and chairman of the board.

In an article published around six decades ago, Moore noted that due to technological advancements, the number of transistors on microchips had roughly doubled every year since integrated circuits were invented a few years before.&nbsp;

“Integrated circuits will lead to such wonders as home computers – or at least terminals connected to a central computer – automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment,” Moore had written, as per Reuters.

The prediction of the trend was at least 20 years before the PC revolution and more than 40 years before Apple launched the iPhone which came to be known as “Moore’s Law”. The insight had become the core of the computer processor industry and is said to have influenced the PC revolution.&nbsp;

After his article, in 1965, chips rapidly became less expensive and more efficient which also helped in driving the world’s technological progress for nearly half a century. This allowed the advent of not just personal computers but the internet and Silicon Valley giants such as Apple, Facebook and Google.&nbsp;

As the tech sector continues to bleed dry amid a drop in revenue and earnings, Intel on Tuesday announced it was cutting top management pay. The chipmaker said its CEO&nbsp;Pat Gelsinger was receiving a 25 per cent cut to his basic salary to preserve cash and initiate a recovery process.&nbsp;

“As we continue to navigate macroeconomic headwinds and work to reduce costs across the company, we’ve made several adjustments to our 2023 employee compensation and rewards programs,” read a statement released by the company.&nbsp;

Apart from&nbsp;Gelsinger, his executive leadership team will see their salaries decrease by 15 per cent. Meanwhile, senior managers and mid-level managers will take a 10 per cent and 5 per cent cut to their pay respectively.&nbsp;

"These changes are designed to impact our executive population more significantly and will help support the investments and overall workforce needed to accelerate our transformation and achieve our long-term strategy," the chipmaker added.&nbsp;

The announcement comes a day after Intel said it was laying off&nbsp;340 employees at its California campus. The company fired the workers and gave them a 60-day notice period.

Previously, Intel has already announced three rounds of firing. The California-headquartered company in December last year announced it was planning to lay off 111 employees at its Praire City Drive facility.

Afterwards, on January 11, it added that the number had risen to 176. Two days later, the chipmaker announced another round and said 167 workers were being let go permanently.&nbsp;

According to reports, this may not be the last of employee termination at Intel as the company plans to get rid of at least 500 workers.&nbsp;

Intel is not the first tech giant in recent months to go on a cost-cutting spree with non-management employees receiving the axe.

Twitter, Facebook, Alphabet, Snap, Microsoft and myriad other tech conglomerates across the world have terminated the contracts of thousands of employees.&nbsp;

Intel has rolled out what it claims to be the world’s first real-time deepfake detector that can weed out fake clips with 96 per cent accuracy.

The California-based chip manufacturer has developed an AI tool called FakeCatcher, which detects a deepfake video by analysing blood flow in video pixels using innovative photoplethysmography (PPG).

The AI tool was developed by Intel researcher Ilke Demir and Umur Ciftci from the State University of New York at Binghamton using Intel tech.

“Deepfake videos are everywhere now. You have probably already seen them; videos of celebrities doing or saying things they never actually did,” says Intel Labs senior staff research Ilke Demir in an Intel press release.

Unlike traditional detectors which look for what is fake about a video, FakeCatcher looks for what is real. The AI runs on a server and interfaces through a web-based platform.

“FakeCatcher looks for authentic clues in real videos, by assessing what makes us human—subtle “blood flow” in the pixels of a video. When our hearts pump blood, our veins change color. These blood flow signals are collected from all over the face and algorithms translate these signals into spatiotemporal maps. Then, using deep learning, we can instantly detect whether a video is real or fake,” Intel said in a statement.

Intel unveils ‘first real-time’ deepfake detector with 96% accuracy

A Bloomberg report&nbsp;published on Wednesday said that Intel Corp is planning a major reduction in workforce to cope with the slowdown in the personal computer market. The layoffs may be announced within this month around the time of its third-quarter earnings report on October 27, claimed the report citing people with knowledge on the matter. &nbsp;

The report also indicated that Intel’s divisions like sales and marketing could see cuts, affecting at least 20% of the staff. As of July, the company reportedly has 113,700 employees. Meanwhile, the company has declined to comment about the layoffs. The chipmaker has been facing a steep decline in demand for PC processors which is reportedly its main business.&nbsp;

Intel has also struggled to gain back some market share lost to rivals like Advanced Micro Devices Inc, said the report. Back in July, it also warned that 2022 sales would be at least $11 billion lower than it expected earlier. “We are also lowering core expenses in the calendar year 2022 and will look to take additional actions in the second half of the year,” said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, according to the report, regarding the second-quarter earnings call.&nbsp;

Gelsinger also released a memo to the company employees on Tuesday which outlines the plans to create an internal foundry model for external customers and the company’s product lines, said a different report. A foundry business is the one that builds chips that are designed by other companies, however, Intel till now has predominantly built and designed chips so far.&nbsp;

This comes at a time when the company faces intense pressure from investors over profits as Intel’s shares have fallen more than 50% in 2022 with a 20% plunge last month alone. The US-based company has also been trying to retain its position in the market with the release of new PC processors and graphics semiconductors which is reportedly a key part of its strategy to sell more chips to the data-centre market, said the Bloomberg report.&nbsp;

The layoffs may be announced within this month around the time of its third-quarter earnings report on October 27, claimed the report citing people with knowledge on the matter. The report also indicated that Intel’s divisions like sales and marketing could see cuts, affecting at least 20% of the staff. As of July, the company reportedly has 113,700 employees. Meanwhile, the company has declined to comment about the layoffs. The chipmaker has been facing a steep decline in demand for PC processors which is reportedly its main business. Back in July, it also warned that 2022 sales would be at least $11 billion lower than it expected earlier. “We are also lowering core expenses in the calendar year 2022 and will look to take additional actions in the second half of the year,” said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, according to the report, regarding the second-quarter earnings call. Gelsinger also released a memo to the company employees on Tuesday which outlines the plans to create an internal foundry model for external customers and the company’s product lines, said a different report. A foundry business is the one that builds chips that are designed by other companies, however, Intel till now has predominantly built and designed chips so far. This comes at a time when the company faces intense pressure from investors over profits as Intel’s shares have fallen more than 50% in 2022 with a 20% plunge last month alone. The US-based company has also been trying to retain its position in the market with the release of new PC processors and graphics semiconductors which is reportedly a key part of its strategy to sell more chips to the data-centre market, said the Bloomberg report. Intel, the US chipmaker has deleted reference to Chinese province of Xinjiang from a letter to its suppliers. The development took place after the company faced backlash from China over its appeal to not use labour or goods and services from the region.

Intel was heavily criticised last month after the appeal to its suppliers. The letter sent last month said that Intel had been "required to ensure that its supply chain does not use any labour or source goods or services from the Xinjiang region" following restrictions imposed by "multiple governments".

On Tuesday, this reference was not present in the page. The letter now states that Intel prohibits "any human trafficked or involuntary labour such as forced, debt bonded, prison, indentured, or slave labour throughout your extended supply chains."

Intel's deletion of any reference to Xinjiang in its annual letter to suppliers, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, was criticised by US Senator Marco Rubio.

“Intel’s cowardice is yet another predictable consequence of economic reliance on China,” Rubio said in a statement on Monday.

“Instead of humiliating apologies and self-censorship, companies should move their supply chains to countries that do not use slave labour or commit genocide.”

Rubio was one of four U.S. politicians who introduced the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act last month calling for a ban on imports from Xinjiang over allegations of forced labour there. On Dec. 23, U.S. President Joe Biden signed the act into law.
