Only three of 45 short-finned pilot whales survived the mass stranding on Friday in shallow waters on Indonesia's Madura Island off the northeastern coast of Java, officials said.

The three whales were pushed back to the sea by volunteers and local authorities along the Modung beach in East Java province.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said authorities are investigating the cause of death while the carcasses will be buried around the coast.

The volunteers, who are helping them to get back to the ocean, said that some whales got back to the coast again as their mothers are still stranded at the beach, Parawansa said.

According to data from Whale Stranding Indonesia, there were 59 beaching incidents in the country last year, most of them dugongs and spinner dolphins.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have said that a dead whale has washed up on a beach south of Tel Aviv.

David Halfon of the Nature and Parks Authority said on Thursday that the animal was a fin whale calf about half the size of an adult, which can grow to more than 20 meters (about 66 feet) long.

He and other officials said it wasn't clear what caused the death, but they said the water nearby is polluted, including with tar.

It's a very sad event, Halfon said of the whale's death and appearance in the Nitzanim Reserve.

Aviad Scheinin of the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station said a team will take samples from the animal to try to determine a cause of death.

Shaul Goldstein, CEO of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, said a tar pollution incident was plaguing area waters in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

He called for an investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the pollution. A similar whale washed up dead in the area in 2016.

Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes located in Indonesia, erupted on Friday. The volcano is close to Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta on Java island. The volcano spewed lava almost two dozen times over last two days and caused hundreds of volcanic quakes, as per Indonesia's geological agency.

"This morning, lava avalanches were observed seven times," the agency said, with the lava travelling up to 700 metres to the southwest.

However, an official warning over the status of the volcano was unchanged at its second highest level, where it has remained since November last year.

Residents were told to avoid the area within five-kilometre radius of the crater. Warning about lava as well as airborne volcanic material was was issued.

Last month, Mount Merapi spewed huge clouds of smoke and ash.

Mount Merapi's last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of around 280,000 residents from surrounding areas.

That was its most powerful eruption since 1930, when around 1,300 people were killed, while another explosion in 1994 took about 60 lives.

"We cannot bring heavy equipment to the site of the landslides currently. However, we are currently trying to make our way," the East Java Search and Rescue Agency told AFP in a written statement.

The landslide also seriously damaged eight houses, said the agency.

Pasuruan, a town in the same province, was also flooded after a river overflowed due to the heavy rains, forcing more than 350 people to flee their homes, the agency added.

Fatal landslides and flash floods are common across the Indonesian archipelago, where seasonal downpours are frequent and relentless.

A British man jailed for his role in the death of an Indonesian policeman in 2016 on a beach in Bali was released on Thursday after serving his sentence.

David Taylor, 38, was jailed in March 2017 together with his Australian girlfriend, Sara Connor, over the death of traffic policeman Wayan Sudarsa, whose body was found on the island`s popular Kuta beach with neck and head wounds.

Taylor left Bali`s Kerobokan jail dressed in a black T-shirt and with dark glasses and a mask.

He did not comment to reporters before getting into a waiting car, but the head of the prison, Fikri Jaya Soebing confirmed his release.

Fikri said he had been granted 18 months and 15 days of remission.

Taylor is now expected to be taken to the airport and deported to Britain.

Taylor and Connor were tried separately and had told the court a fight had broken out with the policeman over Connor`s missing purse.

They were charged with assault leading to death and Taylor was sentenced to six years in prison and Connor to four years.

Connor was granted an early release last year due to good behaviour.

Taylor`s lawyer said after his sentencing his client accepted the ruling.

Two Christian men were publically flogged in Indonesia for consuming alcohol and gambling. This was a rare instance of non-Muslims facing a punishment frequently condemned by rights groups in the country's ultra-conservative Aceh province.

Aceh is the only province in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country that imposes Islamic law.

The two Christians were among seven people publically flogged in the province on Monday.

The caning comes less than two weeks after a male couple were flogged nearly 80 times each for having gay sex, which is outlawed under local Islamic law.

On Monday, the two accused received 40 lashes each from a masked sharia officer who beat their backs with a stick.

One of them, identified only as JF, said he chose flogging to avoid a criminal prosecution that could have seen him jailed up to six months.

Non-Muslims, who have committed an offence that violates both national and religious laws, can choose to be prosecuted under either system.

Flogging of non-Muslims is rare, however, with only a handful subjected to the punishment in recent years for crimes including gambling and selling alcohol.

The five others were Muslims who were whipped for adultery and drinking alcohol -- both violations of religious law.

Meanwhile, human rights groups have slammed public caning as cruel, and Indonesia's President Joko Widodo has called for it to end.

Indonesia has told public schools that they will not be allowed to make any religious attire compulsory.

The order has come after it was revealed that a schoolgirl, practising Christian faith, was forced to wear a headscarf in her class. She is a 16-year-old girl who attends a school that has made it compulsory for children to wear the Muslim headscarf.

After the 16-year-old Christian girl's story went viral, the government has given 30 days to all schools to reverse and revoke any such existing rules in their schools.

It was made clear by Indonesia's Minister for Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim, that wearing any religious attire is "an individual's right… it is not the school's decision"

The ban came in place on Wednesday, and it was made clear that all the schools which do not comply with the set rule will have to face the sanctions.

This story of the 16-year-old was captured on tape by her parents during an official meeting, which they secretly filmed.

"Almost every day, my daughter has been summoned for not wearing a headscarf, and her answer is that she is not Muslim," Elianu Hia, the father of the girl, told BBC News Indonesia.

"If I (force) my daughter to wear the headscarf, I will be lying about my daughter's identity," he said. "Where are my religious rights? This is a public school after all."

The school in question had later, however, called a press conference and apologised, adding that the children will be allowed to dress according to their own religious beliefs from now onwards.

Indonesia's religious affairs minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas also opposed this thought process and said, "Religions do not promote conflict, neither do they justify acting unfairly against those who are different."

Indonesia has launched a Covid screening programme at train stations using a breath analyser, known as GeNose.

The breathalyser has been developed by the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), which says it detects the reaction between the coronavirus and body tissue in the respiratory tract with at least 95 per cent accuracy. Subjects are required to blow into a bag and the result is available in just two minutes.

A similar breath test for COVID-19, SpiroNose, developed by a Dutch health technology company, is being rolled out in the Netherlands to speed up its testing process.

GeNose underwent clinical trial at a Yogyakarta hospital in May 2020 and was approved for distribution in December. It differs from the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab tests and the rapid tests that extract blood with a prick of the finger.

Indonesia has so far 1.1 million infections and over 30,000 deaths.

The machine is sold at 68 million Indonesian rupiah ($4,850).

Those with positive readings are required to undergo a confirmatory PCR test.

Indonesia is currently under the grip of COVID-19, causing problems across the Jakarta's graveyards which have been running out of space. Now, graveyards in the city are expanding space to keep up with the surge in coronavirus-related deaths.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populated country in the world and has been struggling to control the pandemic since it began circulating in March, 2020.

The country has surpassed one million confirmed cases of the virus and has recorded 30,000 deaths. This makes Indonesia's toll the highest in Southeast Asia.

A spokesperson for the Jakarta parks agency - Ivan Nurcahyo told Reuters that six new graveyard locations have been added in different parts of the city. Prior to this, three were already in use.

"In the past two weeks, and in the past few months, there has been a spike in a few areas where the burials have been carried out with (COVID-19) protocols," he said.

Experts fear the real toll could be much higher than reported numbers. COVID-19 victims could be buried in family plots to ensure less space is taken up.

"At the moment, in other cemeteries, we offer an option called a 'stack system' where the victim can be buried together with their family member or relatives," he said.

Indonesia has detained a British woman named in a list of global terror suspects and plans to deport her for visa violations.

Tazneen Miriam Sailar is a Manchester-born convert to Islam once married to a now-deceased Indonesian jihadist. He, however, is not charged with terror offences.

Sailar was born in Manchester on February 20, 1973 and holds a British passport, according to the list, which also said she goes by at least two aliases.

But she and her late husband are on a police list of suspected domestic and foreign extremists, including a Frenchman who appeared in Islamic State (IS) beheading videos and another close to the brothers who massacred staff at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Sailar and her 10-year-old Indonesia born son were being held in Jakarta after they were picked up last year on allegations she didn't have documents to remain in the Southeast Asian nation, according to her lawyer Farid Ghozali.

The police document does not say why Sailar was listed along with some 400 other terror suspects, including her late husband who was killed in Syria in 2015.

The couple's 2010 marriage was officiated by radical Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, the spiritual head of extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), according to sources familiar with the case.

JI members were behind the Bali bombings which saw more than 200 people, including nearly 90 Australian holidaymakers, killed when massive blasts ripped through a pair of packed bars on the Indonesian holiday island in October 2002.

Sailar operated a charity named after her late husband, which sent aid to women and children in conflict-wracked Syria.

She arrived in Muslim-majority Indonesia in 2005 as a medical volunteer for a Christian-based humanitarian foundation that assisted victims of natural disasters, Ghozali and a source said.

Alleged members of the Taliban and Islamic State (IS) appear on the Indonesian police list, as well as British Islamist Anjem Choudary and Sally-Anne Jones, an Islamic State (IS) recruiter reportedly killed in a US drone strike in Syria.

Maxime Hauchard, a now-dead French convert seen in a gruesome IS beheading video, was listed along with French jihadist Peter Cherif, previously charged with the 2011 kidnapping of three French aid workers in Yemen and a close associate of the siblings who killed staff at Charlie Hebdo in 2015.

Indonesia detains British woman on terror suspect list

Hundreds of Rohingya refugees are missing from a refugee camp in Indonesia. There are fears that the refugees have been trafficked to neighbouring Malaysia. The makeshift camp only has 112 refugees. The camp is located in Lhokseumawe on Indonesia's northern coast. In June and September last year, about 400 refugees had arrived at the camp.

Neither local authorities nor the UN could account for the whereabouts of the refugees from the stateless Muslim minority from Myanmar, who are feared to have enlisted traffickers to help them cross the Malacca strait into Malaysia.

"We don't know yet where they went," said Ridwan Jalil, head of the Rohingya taskforce in Lhokseumawe. "But they'll escape if they can find any hole to leave because that is their goal."

A military crackdown in 2017 (dubbed a genocide by UN investigators) forced 750,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee across the borders to Bangladesh.

Thousands have since paid smugglers to get them out of Bangladesh, enduring harrowing, months-long sea journeys punctuated by illness, beatings by traffickers and near-starvation rations to reach Indonesia and Malaysia.

At least 18 Rohingya from the Lhokseumawe camp and over a dozen suspected traffickers were recently apprehended by police several hundred kilometres south in Medan city, a frequent staging point for illegal crossings into Malaysia, authorities said.
The refugees have been asked not to leave the camp, the UN's refugee agency said, given the risks involved in making the journey.

"But (they) left despite our constant efforts to remind them about the danger and risks they could face by leaving, including if they used the services of smugglers," said UNHCR spokeswoman Mitra Suryono.

"But we have to remember that many of (them) have relatives in other countries such as Malaysia. That may be one of the reasons why they continued their journey," she added.

"But they'll escape if they can find any hole to leave because that is their goal." A military crackdown in 2017 (dubbed a genocide by UN investigators) forced 750,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee across the borders to Bangladesh. Rights groups blamed the Indonesian government, which drastically reduced security at the settlement when the Rohingya were placed under the supervision of UNHCR last month.

A major earthquake was detected at sea near the Philippines on Thursday evening. United States Geological Survey (USGS) pegged the intensity of the earthquake at 7. There are no reports of damage or casualties as of now.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that there was no threat of a Tsunami.

The quake hit about 310 kilometres (193 miles) southeast of Davao city on the main southern island of Mindanao at a depth of 95 kilometres (59 miles) at 8:23 pm local time (1223 GMT), according to USGS.

Residents in the town of Jose Abad Santos, near the southern tip of the island, lost electricity for about 15 minutes after the quake shook the region but there was no damage, police chief Captain Glabynarry Murillo told AFP.

"From our vantage point at the police station we saw many residents rushing outside," said Murillo.

"We also rushed outside because the police station is a three-storey building."

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of aftershocks but said damage was not expected.

"It was felt extensively because it's a major earthquake but it's deep so it won't be damaging to the infrastructure because it's considerably far (from the island)," Renato Solidum, director of the institute, told DZBB radio station.

The quake was felt on the northern Indonesian island of Sangihe, but similarly there were no injuries or damage reported.

"Here in Sangihe capital, Tahuna people were panicking for a while and they fled home because the quake was quite long and strong," Rivolius Pudihang, head of the disaster mitigation agency in Sangihe, North Sulawesi, told AFP.

A volcano in Indonesia's East Java province erupted on Saturday, spewing ash and smoke as high as an estimated 5.6 kilometres into the sky, according to data from the geological agency at the country's energy ministry.

Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country, and while many show high levels of activity it can be weeks or even months before an eruption.

The Semeru mountain erupted at just past 5 p.m. local time. Videos posted on social media showed grey ash clouds towering over houses.

The country's disaster mitigation agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the possibility of evacuation.

Other volcanoes, such as the Merapi volcano on the island of Java and Sinabung on Sumatra, have shown signs of activity recently.

A powerful earthquake on Indonesia's Sulawesi island has killed at least 60 people, authorities said Sunday, with thousands left homeless as rescuers raced to find anyone still alive under mountains of rubble more than two days after the disaster.

But monsoon rains were challenging the search effort, as hundreds of injured overwhelmed the only local hospital still operating in the aftermath of the 6.2-magnitude quake, which struck early Friday.

The tremor triggered panic among residents of the island, which was hit by a 2018 quake-tsunami disaster that killed thousands.

Rescuers have been filling body bags with corpses hauled from beneath crumpled buildings in Mamuju, a city of 110,000 people in West Sulawesi province, where a hospital was flattened and a shopping mall lay in ruins.

Others were killed south of the city.

The death toll could still climb.

Excavators, cranes and other heavy equipment were deployed across the devastated seaside city where buildings were reduced to a tangled mass of twisted metal and chunks of concrete, including the regional governor's office.

It was unclear how many people -- dead or alive -- could be still under the debris.

"We heard a roaring sound and the house started shaking," said survivor Jumardi, 50, from a shelter where he and six family members took refuge.

"All I had in my mind was that I would die...Everyone was panicking."

Authorities have not given a figure for how many survivors have been rescued.

A pair of young sisters plucked from under the mass of concrete and other debris were treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, corpses were recovered from under a collapsed hospital, while five members of a family of eight were found dead in the crumpled remains of their home.

- Running low on food, supplies -

Masked doctors treated patients with broken limbs and other injuries at a makeshift medical centre set up outside the only one of the city's hospitals that survived the quake relatively intact.

Among them was Wawan, who was rescued by neighbours after the violent tremor buried him.

The 27-year-old initially didn't want to go into a hospital to treat a broken foot.

"I was traumatised," said the man, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

"But people convinced me that the doctors were treating patients outside the building, so I agreed to go."

Thousands left homeless by the quake took to makeshift shelters -- many little more than tarpaulin-covered tents filled with whole families.

They said they were running low on food, blankets and other aid, as emergency supplies were rushed to the hard-hit region.

Many survivors are unable to return to their destroyed homes, or were too scared to go back fearing a tsunami sparked by aftershocks, which are common after strong earthquakes.

"It's better to take shelter before something worse happens," said Mamuju resident Abdul Wahab, from a tent with his wife and four kids, including a baby.

Fearing an outbreak of coronavirus in the crowded camps, authorities were trying to separate high- and lower-risk groups.

"Covid-19 further complicates (the) emergency response," said NGO Project HOPE.

Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of nearly 270 million, has been hit by a series of natural disasters this week.

Landslides sparked by torrential rains killed at least 28 in Java island, while dozens are dead or missing after severe flooding pounded another part of Sulawesi and Kalimantan, Indonesia's section of Borneo.

Volcano Mount Semeru shot a plume of ash and debris some 4.5 kilometres (2.8 miles) into the sky Saturday night as bright red lava flowed down its crater. There were no reports of casualties.

Indonesian experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

And on December 26, 2004, a massive 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra, triggering a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia -- among the worst recorded disasters in history.

Indonesia launched one of the world's biggest COVID-19 vaccination campaigns on Wednesday with President Joko Widodo getting the first shot of a Chinese vaccine as his country fights one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in Asia.

The drive aims to inoculate 181.5 million people, with the first to be vaccinated receiving the CoronaVac vaccine from China's Sinovac Biotech, which Indonesia authorised for emergency use on Monday.

Dressed in a white shirt and wearing a mask, the president, who is known as Jokowi, got his shot at the presidential palace.

"Vaccination is important to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission and give protection to us and safety to every Indonesian and help accelerate economic recovery," Jokowi said after getting his injection.

Some other officials being vaccinated showed off their shot marks to waiting journalists and flexed their arms.

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin has said nearly 1.5 million medical workers would be inoculated by February, followed by public servants and the general population within 15 months.

Unlike many countries, Indonesia intends to inoculate its working population first, rather than the elderly, partly because it does not have enough data from clinical trials on CoronaVac's efficacy on older people.

Indonesia on Wednesday reported daily record increases in both cases and deaths, taking overall coronavirus fatalities to 24,951 and infections to 858,043.

Helped by optimism about the vaccination campaign, Indonesian stocks, which have risen in the past few days, extended gains on Wednesday with the main index up 0.62 per cent. The rupiah rose 0.46 per cent.

'Not one bullet'

Southeast Asia's largest economy suffered its first recession in more than two decades last year due to the pandemic, with the government estimating a contraction of as much as 2.2 per cent.

The government has said two-thirds of the 270 million population must be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, with the cost of the programme expected to be more than 74 trillion rupiah ($5.26 billion).

Olivia Herlinda, a researcher at the Center for Indonesia's Strategic Development Initiatives, said authorities had not taken into account the vaccine efficacy and virus reproduction rate to justify its herd immunity focus.

Epidemiologist Masdalina Pane said that vaccines had to be accompanied by increased testing and tracing.

"There's not one bullet," she said.

Budi said Indonesia's testing and tracing needed improving, adding there was an imbalance in testing resources across the archipelago.

Some doctors have expressed concern about the vaccination campaign and questioned how effective Sinovac's vaccine will be, even though they have suffered one of the world's highest death rates from the virus.

Indonesia has said its trials showed CoronaVac has an efficacy rate of 65.3 per cent, but Brazilian researchers said on Tuesday the vaccine was only 50.4 per cent effective.

Indonesia's food and drugs authority BPOM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bambang Heriyanto, corporate secretary of Bio Farma, the Indonesian company involved in the trials, said the Brazilian data was still above the 50 per cent benchmark set by the World Health Organization.

Turkish researchers said in December CoronaVac showed a 91.25 per cent efficacy based on interim analysis.

Indonesia expects to get another 122.5 million doses of CoronaVac by January 2022, with about 30 million doses due by the end of the first quarter this year.

It has also secured nearly 330 million doses of other vaccines, including from AstraZeneca and Pfizer and its partner BioNTech.

Morning news brief: Trump's likely impeachment, plane crash in Indonesia and more

Landslides caused by heavy rain in western Indonesia killed 11 and injured 18, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said on Sunday.

The landslides at Cihanjuang Village in West Java, about 150 km (95 miles) southeast of the capital Jakarta took place at 4 p.m. (0900 GMT) and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, BNPB spokesman Raditya Jati said in a statement.

"The first landslide was triggered by high rainfall and unstable soil conditions. The subsequent landslide occurred while officers were still evacuating victims around the first landslide area," Raditya added.

The death toll was preliminary as of Sunday morning, he said, adding that potential rain and thunderstorms through the day may hamper rescue efforts.

President Joko Widodo in October warned Indonesia that heavy rains from the La Nina weather system could trigger flooding and landslides, and affect the nation`s agricultural output.

A La Nina pattern is characterized by unusually cold temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Indonesia frequently suffers floods and landslides, particularly during the rainy season from November to March, a situation often worsened by the cutting down of forests.

Debris from Indonesia's Sriwijaya Air aircraft was brought to Jakarta port on Sunday. The salvage workers found plane's altimeter radar, emergency chute and a piece suspected to have come from the bottom part of the plane's tail.

Speaking to reporters from the port, the head of Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency said that from Monday (January 11), the search would focus on looking for victims and large pieces of the stricken jet, as well as retrieving the black boxes.

Chief of Indonesian National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) said that location of the two black boxes have been identified.

Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 crashed just minutes after takeoff from Jakarta airport. It took off and lost contact with air traffic control and disappeared from radar around 0730 GMT. The plane had 62 people on board and was headed to Pontianak in West Kalimantan

Data from FlightRadar24 indicated that the airliner reached an altitude of nearly 11,000 feet (3,350 metres) before dropping suddenly to 250 feet. It then lost contact with air traffic control.

The transport minister said Saturday that the jet appeared to deviate from its intended course just before it disappeared from radar.

"The aircraft's final moments are... very concerning as the speed that (it) was flying at that altitude was much lower than expected," said Stephen Wright, professor of aircraft systems at Finland's Tampere University.
