<p>Durbar Hall has been the venue of important ceremonies such as presentation of the national awards while Ashok Hall has been used for special events. However, starting Thursday,&nbsp;both will be referred to using their new names so as to reflect Indian cultural values and ethos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Rashtrapati Bhavan, the office and the residence of the President of India, is a symbol of the nation, and an invaluable heritage of the people. Continuous efforts are being made to make it more accessible to people. There has been a consistent endeavour to make the ambience of the Rashtrapati Bhavan reflective of Indian cultural values and ethos," the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.</p>

<p>Explaining what prompted the name change, it added that the term 'Durbar' refers to courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and British. However, the term lost relevance after India became a Republic that is "Ganatantra" (in Hindi).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>As for the Ashoka Hall, Rashtrapati Bhavan said the move was intended to remove 'traces of anglicisation'.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Renaming ‘Ashoka Hall’ as ‘Ashok Mandap’ brings uniformity in language and removes the traces of anglicisation while upholding the key values associated with the word Ashok."</p>

<p>Notably,&nbsp;in January last year the Mughal Gardens, located at Rashtrapati&nbsp;Bhavan was renamed 'Amrit Udyan'&nbsp;- in line with the theme of India's 75th Independence Day celebrations.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Teacher prior to entering politics</strong></p>

<p>She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ramadevi Women's University in Bhubaneswar in 1979. She started as a teacher before entering State politics in 1997 as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.She was appointed vice president of the BJP's Scheduled Tribes (ST) Morcha in the same year.</p>

<p>From 2000 to 2004, Murmu served as the State Minister in charge of the separate departments of fisheries, agriculture, and transportation. In 2007, she was honoured with the Nilkantha award for best MLA by the Odisha Legislative Assembly.</p>

<p>She served as the state president of the ST Morcha and the BJP district president in Mayurbhan throughout the course of the next ten years. She began serving a five-year tenure as Jharkhand's first tribal governor in 2015 and finished it in 2016.</p>

<p>The Indian president will hand over cricket kits to the president of the Jamaican Cricket Association and Cricket Association of St. Vincent and Grenadines.</p>

<p>India has been helping to build&nbsp;capacity relating to cricket globally&nbsp;from the Maldives where it is helping build a cricket stadium to train&nbsp;Afghan cricketers in the past. In fact, cricket bats were&nbsp;given by PM Modi to world leaders as part of the connect.</p>

<p>Jamaica is a Girmitya country with around 70,000 strong Indian diasporas. Girmitiya countries -&nbsp;&nbsp;Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, and the Caribbean region are&nbsp;places where indentured labourers from India were taken by the British.</p>

<p>Most of these Indians are from the Indian states of UP, Bihar and Bengal and have preserved their culture. This year also marks the 176th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in Jamaica.</p>

<p>In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a country with a population of 1.1 lakh has approximately&nbsp;7,700&nbsp;people of Indian origin.</p>

Economic Survey 2022 updates: Indian President Kovind highlights govt's agenda for growth

<p>"Timely and calibrated decisions" taken by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic saved the lives of lakhs of citizens, President Ram Nath Kovind said on Friday while highlighting the rapid decline in the number of new coronavirus cases and the significant increase in the number of recoveries.</p>

<p>In his customary address to a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament that marks the start of the Budget session, Kovind said by making lakhs of COVID-19 vaccine doses available to several countries, India has fulfilled its obligation towards humanity in these times of difficulty.</p>

<p>During this period, the country has demonstrated its scientific capabilities, technical expertise and the strength of its start-up ecosystem by developing a network of over 2,200 laboratories in a short time span, manufacturing thousands of ventilators, PPE kits and test kits and thereby, attaining self-reliance.</p>

<p>Two vaccines -- Covishield manufactured by the Serum Institute of India and the indigenously-developed Covaxin of Bharat Biotech -- have been approved for restricted emergency use in India.</p>

<p>"It is a matter of immense pride that India is conducting the world's largest vaccination programme. Both the vaccines rolled out under this programme are produced indigenously. By making lakhs of corona vaccine doses available to several countries, India has fulfilled its obligation towards humanity in these times of difficulty.</p>

<p>"The accolades being showered on India globally for this work, along with the essence of our age-old cultural tradition of 'Sarve Santu Niramayaha' and the endeavour to work for human welfare, are imparting strength to our efforts," Kovind said.</p>

<p>During the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected every country in the world, India has emerged on the global stage with a renewed vigour, he underlined.</p>

<p>"It gives me satisfaction that due to the timely and calibrated decisions taken by my government, we were able to save the lives of lakhs of our countrymen. Today, there is a rapid decline in the number of new cases of the coronavirus and at the same time, there is a significant increase in the number of recoveries," the president said.</p>

<p>He said the gains from the work done by the government in the healthcare sector in the last six years were visible during the pandemic.</p>

<p>During these years, there was an emphasis not only on modernising the healthcare systems, but also on prevention of diseases. Programmes such as the Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyan, the Fit India Movement and the Khelo India Abhiyan have helped create awareness on health in the country, Kovind said.</p>

<p>"We have also witnessed the beneficial impact of the efforts made by my government to promote ayurveda and yoga," he said.</p>

<p>Highlighting the benefits of the Centre's healthcare schemes -- Ayushman Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana -- Kovind said?1.5 crore poor people of the country have received free treatment of up to Rs five lakh and as a result, they have been able to save a total amount of over Rs 30,000 crore.</p>

<p>"As a result of the efforts of my government, the poor are now able to avail the benefits of healthcare facilities with ease and their expenditure on treatment of diseases is progressively reducing.</p>

<p>"Today, the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana can be availed at more than 24,000 hospitals across the country. Similarly, under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Yojana, the poor are getting medicines at extremely affordable rates from 7,000 jan aushadhi kendras across the country. Lakhs of patients are purchasing medicines from these kendras daily and due to their reasonable prices, are able to save Rs 3,600 crore annually," he said.</p>

<p>Elaborating on the developments in the medical education sector, Kovind said the number of medical colleges in the country has gone up from 387 in 2014 to 562 and there has been an increase of over 50,000 seats at the under-graduate and postgraduate levels in medical education in the last six years.</p>

<p>Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the government has sanctioned 22 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), he pointed out.</p>

<p>It has also laid the foundation for historic reforms in the field of medical education by establishing the National Medical Commission (NMC), along with four autonomous boards, the president said.</p>

<p>The decades-old Medical Council of India (MCI) has been replaced with the NMC as a part of these reforms, he stated.</p>

<p>In order to ensure that infants from poor families do not get affected by serious illnesses, the government has not only increased the scope of the vaccination programme by including more diseases, but has also taken the vaccination campaign to remote tribal areas, which had hitherto not been covered, Kovind underscored.</p>

<p>More than 3.5 crore children were vaccinated under the Mission Indradhanush, he said.</p>

<p>The government has also initiated digitisation of medical services through the Rashtriya Digital Health Mission, the president said, adding that the citizens will be able to avail of facilities such as digital appointments, digital reports as well as digital health records through this mission in the coming days.&nbsp;<br />

<p>&quot;Multiplicity in culture, faith and language is what makes India special. We derive our strength from tolerance. We may argue, we may agree or we may not agree. But we cannot deny the essential prevalence of multiplicity of opinion. Otherwise, a fundamental character of our thought process will wither away,&quot; Pranab Mukherjee said.</p>

<p>The Presiden thanked the people of the country for &quot;the kindness and affection bestowed on me&quot; and said how successful he was as a president would be judged over time &quot;under the lens of history&quot;.</p>

I learnt from my travels across the length and breadth of the country. &nbsp;I learnt from my conversation and engagement with young and bright minds in colleges and universities, scientists, innovators, scholars, jurists, scholars, parties and leaders. These interactions kept me focused and inspired. I strove hard. How successful I was in discharging my responsibility will be judged over time under the lens of history,&quot; Pranab Mukherjee said.</p>

<p>The outgoing president said that for the last 50 years of his public life, his &quot;sacred text&quot; has been the constitution and &quot;temple&quot;, the Parliament of India.</p>

During my five years of service, we also tried to build a happy township in the presidential house. And then we extended our experience to a few villages in our neighbourhood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The journey continues. As I get ready to leave, let me repeat what I said in&nbsp;my first address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day in August 2012 and I repeat: My words cannot express the gratitude to the people and their representatives for the honour of this high office even as I am deeply conscious of the fact that the highest honour in our democracy does not lie in any office but in being a citizen of India, our motherland.&quot;</p>

<p>Referring to the &quot;transformative power&quot; of education, he called for upgrading higher educational institutions to world-class levels.</p>

<p>&quot;Our education system must accept disruption as a norm and prepare our students to manage and build upon the disruptions. Our universities should not be a place for rote-memorising but an assembly of inquisitive minds,&quot; he said, adding that institutes of higher learning must promote &quot;creative thinking, innovation and scientific temper&quot;.</p>

<p>&quot;It calls for the application of logic through discussion, argument and analysis. These qualities have to be cultivated and the autonomy of the mind has to be encouraged,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>The President thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assuring him that nation-building efforts would continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I am deeply touched by the prime minister of the nation when he said the work will continue and the government will support and I have no doubt that the president who is going to be sworn-in tomorrow will look after this, therefore, my self and my team, secretary to the press, additional secretary to the&nbsp;president and all others including the national innovation council from whom I have received utmost cooperation in the last few years will feel happy and secured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The president ended his speech by saying that he would leave Rashtrapati Bhavan like any other ordinary citizen, &quot;a pilgrim like all of you in India&#39;s onward march towards glory&quot;.</p>

<p>He emphasised that good governance, social inclusion and poverty eradication could ensure people&#39;s right to lead a happy life.</p>

<p>Talking about the need for protecting the environment, the president stressed the need for sustainable development and cautioned that &quot;when greed exceeds need, nature lets loose its fury&quot;.</p>

<p>He asked scientists and technologists to work with farmers and workers to revive the health of the soil, arrest the decline in water tables and restore ecological balance.</p>

Our universities should not be a place for rote-memorising but an assembly of inquisitive minds," he said, adding that institutes of higher learning must promote "creative thinking, innovation and scientific temper". "It calls for the application of logic through discussion, argument and analysis. These qualities have to be cultivated and the autonomy of the mind has to be encouraged," he said. The President thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assuring him that nation-building efforts would continue. I am deeply touched by the prime minister of the nation when he said the work will continue and the government will support and I have no doubt that the president who is going to be sworn-in tomorrow will look after this, therefore, my self and my team, secretary to the press, additional secretary to the president and all others including the national innovation council from whom I have received utmost cooperation in the last few years will feel happy and secured. The president ended his speech by saying that he would leave Rashtrapati Bhavan like any other ordinary citizen, "a pilgrim like all of you in India's onward march towards glory". He emphasised that good governance, social inclusion and poverty eradication could ensure people's right to lead a happy life. Talking about the need for protecting the environment, the president stressed the need for sustainable development and cautioned that "when greed exceeds need, nature lets loose its fury". <p>President Mukherjee thanked everybody present in the Hall, particularly the Parliament for &#39;creating&#39; him.</p>

<p>&quot;If I claim I am the creation of this Parliament, perhaps it will not be treated as immodesty. The Parliament gave a direction to my political vision as I got to learn a lot from the serious discussions held in both Houses of the Parliament,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>He added that he had attended the first session of the Parliament on July 22, 1969.</p>

<p>&quot;For the last 37 years, I have been a part of five Rajya Sabhas, four times from Bengal and once from Gujarat,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>President Mukherjee remembered the former prime ministers of India, including late Indira Gandhi.</p>

<p>&quot;The Constitution represents the unity of the 125 crore people of India,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>President Mukherjee expressed happiness over the fact that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime was launched during his tenure and disappointment over the constant downfall of the Parliament&#39;s stature.</p>

<p>&quot;The recent passage of the GST and its launch on July 1 is a shining example of co-operative federalism and speaks volumes of the maturity of India&#39;s Parliament,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>&quot;It is unfortunate that the Parliamentary time devoted to legislations has been declining,&quot; he added.</p>

<p>Concluding his address as he shouted &quot;Jai Hind&quot;, President Mukherjee thanked the gathering again for the farewell given to him.</p>

<p>Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker presented a book signed by the members of Parliament. The book includes signatures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Thambidurai, and deputy chair of Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien.</p>

<p>Earlier on Saturday, the outgoing President attended a farewell dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister hosted the ceremony at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, where president-elect Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, senior ministers and Opposition leaders were also present.</p>

<p>The president, who is also Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, was also given a farewell by the chiefs of the armed forces. The function was held at the Manekshaw Centre.</p>

<p>President Mukherjee will address a farewell speech to the nation at 7.30 pm on Monday (July 24).</p>

<p>President-elect Ram Nath Kovind will take oath as the 14th President of India on Tuesday (July 25).&nbsp;</p>

Narayanan was recalled from retirement, and assigned an ambassadorial seat in the Washington DC in the year 1980. He served a four-year term, bringing&nbsp;both the countries closer.</p>

<p>A scholar and author, KR Narayanan spoke his mind on Dalit issues, took an active part in conferences and discussions&nbsp;that dealt with Dalit issues. He even&nbsp;wrote articles advocating the Dalit cause.</p>

<p>Impressed by his genius and commitment to the community, the Congress party offered him a Lok Sabha seat in 1984 and Narayanan went on to win three elections in a row. Then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi inducted&nbsp;Narayanan into his ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before becoming the country&rsquo;s first vice president in the year 1992, Narayanan was already an iconic Dalit personality. He went on to become the President of India in the year 1997- the first Dalit president. As the President, Narayanan served the nation well, arguably, nation&rsquo;s best president ever.</p>

<p>KR Narayanan&rsquo;s&nbsp;nomination to the presidency was in recognition of his iconic stature, a role model citizen for the entire country, arguably, the most illustrious Dalit of his time.</p>

<p>While Ram Nath Kovind deserves to be congratulated for his presidential feat, the future history would ask some questions incessantly, and BJP will have to answer these. Some of these questions are:&nbsp;</p>

Why BJP's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind is an "exceptional" Dalit

<p>Leaders of at least nine non-NDA parties are part of the sub-group constituted to arrive at a consensus opposition candidate for the July 17 Indian presidential poll.</p>

<p>According to sources, the sub-group will be meeting next week to start deliberations among the opposition parties on the crucial poll.</p>

<p>They said Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad aong others are part of the sub-group.</p>

<p>The group would comprise leaders of prominent parties like Left, TMC, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party besides the JD(U), RJD, NCP and DMK as well as the main opposition party-the Congress.</p>

<p>The sources said the possible names for the opposition candidate will only emerge after June 15 i.E. After a formal notification will be issued by the Election Commission on June 14.</p>

<p>Congress president Sonia Gandhi is instrumental in forming this panel after she hosted a luncheon for the opposition leaders on May 26 which was attended by leaders of 17 parties.</p>

<p>&quot;It was suggested at the May 26 luncheon that a sub-group of non-NDA parties be formed who could deliberate and bring consensus among the opposition parties on the matter,&quot; said a senior leader.</p>

<p>It was also stated at the luncheon that as per the tradition, the ruling party should take the lead in suggesting a consensual candidate for the President&#39;s post.</p>

<p>In case it does not do so, the opposition parties will come out with its own candidate after reaching at a consensus among the opposition ranks, the sources said.</p>

<p>With the ruling BJP yet to initiate efforts for a consensual presidential nominee, the Congress has said the non-NDA parties will make every possible attempt to find &quot;the best person&quot; for India and it has many &quot;deserving&quot; candidates.</p>

<p>Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the opposition has made it clear that the BJP-led NDA cannot take the country for granted on the issue, but he refused to come out with any specific name.</p>

<p>The CPI(M), on its part, said that it was in discussion with other parties for a person with &quot;impeccable secular credentials who can discharge the responsibility as a custodian of the Constitution.&quot;</p>

<p>A number of leaders of opposition parties had already met Sonia Gandhi last month after she stepped up discussions for forging opposition unity on the issue.</p>

<p>Gandhi has held parleys with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, DMK leader M K Stalin, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav, Samajwadi Party&#39;s Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD&#39;s Lalu Prasad, among others.</p>

<p>The Congress chief has been at the forefront of efforts to evolve a consensus among opposition parties for putting up candidates who are &quot;acceptable to the country&quot; for the posts of president and vice president.</p>

<p>The names of former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishan Gandhi and former Speaker Meira Kumar have so far emerged as the Opposition&#39;s choices for the top post.</p>

<p>The presidential election will be held on July 17 and the counting of votes is slated for July 20.</p>

"It was suggested at the May 26 luncheon that a sub-group of non-NDA parties be formed who could deliberate and bring consensus among the opposition parties on the matter," said a senior leader. <p>He advocated free thinking in university campuses and said students and faculties must engage in &quot;reasoned discussion and debate rather than propagating a culture of unrest&quot;.</p>

<p>He also said it was tragic to see students caught in the vortex of violence and disquiet.</p>

<p>President Mukherjee said although the production of wealth must necessarily be one of the predominant objectives of state policy, it must be imbued with the principle of equality on which there can be no compromise.</p>
