Indian Navy on Thursday successfully test-fired the 290-km strike range Brahmos supersonic cruise missile.

According to sources, the supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired in the Arabian Sea. BrahMos is a medium-range supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from ships, aircraft, or land.

In September this year, the missile featuring Indian propulsion system, airframe, power supply, and other major indigenous components, was successfully test-fired from ITR, Chandipur in Odisha.

In May this year, the IAF successfully fired the BrahMos air version missile from its frontline Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The air-launched BrahMos missile is a 2.5-tonne supersonic air to surface cruise missile with ranges of close to 300 km, designed and developed by BAPL.

The IAF became the first Air Force in the world to have successfully fired an air-launched 2.8 Mach surface attack missile of this category on a sea target on November 22, 2017.

A new generation wargaming software was handed over to the Indian Navy here on Monday. The software aims at meeting the "contemporary operational and tactical-level wargaming requirement" for the Navy, the government said.

The software was designed and developed by the Institute for Systems Studies and Analysis (ISSA), a premier DRDO laboratory, in collaboration with Maritime Warfare Centre, Visakhapatnam.

The software was handed over by Secretary, Department of Defence R-D, and DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy to Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar here.

The key focus has been to create a wargaming environment, which enables Maritime Warfare Centres (MWCs) to train using the latest technologies and computing tools, the Defence Ministry said in a release.

The software has versatile and user-friendly features which enable globally playable wargaming scenarios between multiple forces, it said.

It enables exercises to be conducted between geographically dispersed locations over Wide Area Network. The architecture is forward compatible and new functional and equipment modules can be developed and easily plugged in.

Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh on Monday said that his force has received intelligence that terror-outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is training people for underwater attack.

"After the 26/11 attack in 2008, we set up coastal security. It is doing very well. As the Navy is overall in-charge of maritime security including coastal security along with coast guard, the marine police and other stakeholders, we are ensuring that there is no intrusion from the seas," he told reporters here.

"We have received intelligence that the underwater wing of Jaish-e-Mohammed is being trained for attacks. We are keeping a track of it and we assure you that we are fully alert to foil any of their designs" Singh added.

JeM had orchestrated the Pulwama terror attack in which 42 CRPF jawans were killed in February this year.

When asked about the budgetary allocation to Indian Navy going down, he said, "Because of the budgetary allocation, we have to do a little bit revamp of our procurement plan. Yes, it has limited us to some extent."

Singh said that the Navy is observing Chinese movement in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

"We are watching the progress in the IOR. Chinese want to become a global power, so they will come into the IOR. We are watching them. For us, our national interest is the topmost priority. We will have to act when there is something against our national interest," he said.

With the Chinese Navy expressing its intent to further expand itself into a global power, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh on Thursday said his Force is watching this carefully and will respond to it within the "budget and constraints" faced by it.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a FICCI seminar on shipbuilding, the Navy Chief informed that by the end of the year, India would be in a position to sign a Rs 17,000 crore contract with the US for buying 24 MH-60 Romeo multirole choppers.

"It is not just the Chinese white paper but it has been said in the past before. A lot of resources have been shifted from other arms to the PLA Navy, obviously in-line with their intention to become a global power. We have to watch that carefully and see how we can respond within our budget and constraints we have," he said when asked about the Chinese Navy white paper issued on Wednesday.

The Chinese Navy in its white paper has made its intent to expand itself globally very clear and become a world power.

Speaking about the deal worth Rs. 17,000 crore with the US for 24 MH-60 multi-role helicopters, Singh said, "In the multi-role helicopter project, the procedure for Letter of Request and Letter of Acceptance is on. We should be able to sign it by the end of this year."

The Navy wants to deploy these multirole choppers on-board its warships and has tried to buy them through tenders twice but failed to do so. It has now decided to procure these choppers through government to government deal with the US for it.

Informing about the ongoing Navy Project-75 for the supply of six submarines, Singh said, "We have an expert committee with us, which is handling the entire 75 India project. This strategic partnership model is extremely important for us because this is one of the endeavours to build up the ecosystem in India."

"Through this, we are trying to get a good transfer of technology so that all our platforms become indigenous," he added.

Singh further apprised media here about the intrinsic requirements needed to build a strong Navy. "We require long term FISCAL support to build a Navy and that is my constant refrain and that's the only way we can plan if we have assured FISCAL support for long term."

The Navy Chief also said a few of the older submarines are undergoing a modification process also known as Medium Refit Life Certification process that will pull the working of these ships for a much longer duration.

In April 2019, the Indian Navy had initiated the process to acquire six lethal submarines under the ambitious Project-75 India likely to cost over Rs 50,000 crore.

The Navy initiated the tender process by issuing the initial Expression of Interest to foreign vendors willing to take part in the mega programme.

Under Project 75-India, the Navy wants to build six conventional diesel-electric submarines which would be almost 50 per cent bigger than the under-construction Scorpene-class submarines being built at the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.

While the Indian Navy has more than 100 submarines and surface warships, the Pakistani Navy has around 20 of these. However, the Indian Navy is building assets for tackling the Chinese Navy which operates occasionally in the IOR region.

On the issue of the third aircraft carrier required by the Indian Navy, Singh said the force wanted a third such warship to have three carriers at a time so that at all the times, two air carriers are operational.

The Navy wants a 65,000-tonne carrier with electronic propulsion and CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system onboard it.

After the Indian Navy launched "Operation Sankalp" in the Gulf of Oman to "reassure" Indian flagged vessels transiting through the region in the wake of US-Iran tensions, Indian Navy MARCOS commandos boarded the oil tankers intent on travelling onboard in order to provide protection to the ships.

India has deployed its ships - INS Chennai and INS Sunayna in the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf - to undertake maritime security operations as tensions in the Gulf ratcheted up after Iran shot down a US drone last week.

DG Shipping had issued two advisories on June 13 and 16 to all Indian flagged vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz and Persian/ Arabian Gulf region and had advised them to take appropriate protection measures.

Both the gulfs are busy shipping routes through which international trade occurs, aerial surveillance is also being undertaken by India in the area.

Tensions in the Gulf continued to rise nearly a week after Iran shot down a US drone. On Monday, Washington blacklisted Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military chiefs asserting that it would also sanction foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iran stuck to its contention that the drone which was downed by its Revolutionary Guard had violated its airspace. Russia, a key ally of Tehran, backed Iran's version of events.

Washington has also blamed Iran for mid-June attacks on two tankers in sensitive Gulf waters, a claim Iran hotly refutes.

Trump has said he is ready to negotiate with Iran "with no preconditions" and that Iran could have a "phenomenal future".

"We do not ask for conflict," he said, adding that depending on Iran's response, sanctions could end tomorrow or "years from now."

Navy chief Karambir Singh's directive: Curb subservient behaviour, ceremonial practices

Admiral Karambir Singh on Friday assumed charge as the 24th chief of the Indian Navy, becoming the first helicopter pilot to helm the force.

He succeeds Admiral Sunil Lanba who retired after a distinguished career spanning over four decades.

Before appointed to the top post, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam.

As Navy chief, Admiral Singh's immediate priority will be to expedite the long-delayed modernisation of the Indian Navy, including by inducting new warships, submarines and aircraft.

At present, the Navy has around 132 ships, 220 aircraft and 15 submarines.

Admiral Singh is also expected to focus on the expansion of India's presence and overall influence in the Indian Ocean region where China has been fast increasing its presence.

His promotion was challenged by Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command Vice Admiral Bimal Verma on grounds of seniority.

However, the Defence ministry rejected Vice Admiral Verma's petition following which he approached a military tribunal.

The Armed Forces Tribunal here allowed Admiral Singh to take charge as the new Navy chief, holding that his continuation will depend on the final outcome of the case. The next date of hearing in the case is July 17.

Admiral Singh is scheduled to continue in the post till November 2021. The Indian Navy has successfully test-fired a medium range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM), achieving a significant milestone to enhance its anti-air warfare capability, the defence ministry said on Friday.

The test-firing of the missile was undertaken on the western seaboard by Indian naval ships Kochi and Chennai.

"The Indian Navy achieved a significant milestone in enhancing its anti-air warfare capability with the maiden cooperative engagement firing of the MRSAM," the defence ministry said in a statement.

The test-firing of the missile was carried out jointly by the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries.

The DRDO has jointly developed the missile in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries. The MRSAM has been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited.

"These surface-to-air missiles are fitted onboard the Kolkata class destroyers and would also be fitted on all future major warships of the Indian Navy," the ministry said.

"With the successful proving of this cooperative mode of engagement, the Indian Navy has become a part of a select group of Navies that have this niche capability," it added.

India's ministry of defence initiated the process to create three new agencies, especially for special operations, cyberspace and space war. These special forces divisions will have nearly 3000 commandos for the country's security.

As its primary step, the government appointed Sri Lanka war veteran Major General AK Dhingra as the first chief of the armed forces special operations division. The Indian tri-services commando unit will have two-star officers from the Indian Army’s parachute force also known as Paras, the marine commandos MARCOS of Navy and the Garuda unit of the Air Force.

This new division of Indian defence will work under the tri-service integrated defence staff and will have it’s headquarter based in the defence ministry. The division is also expected to be the first choice of the government in matters related to the terror attacks in the country and neighbouring South Asia.

For now, the Army’s special unit is combatting terrorists and conducting special anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The attempt to set up the armed force special forces division was given final approval by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year during a combined conference of Indian defence forces in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

India has been facing terror attack threats for decades. After the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai and several other terrorist operations in Kashmir, the government felt the need for the special unit.

The three new agencies are a small beginning towards injecting jointness and synergy among the Army, Navy and Indian Air Force. The defence ministry says, in the future, the agencies can grow into full-fledged commands.

A country as large as India certainly needs a much-needed collaboration in logistics, planning, procurement and training among the three forces, who often pull in different directions, as well as to provide "single-point'' fighting advises to the government.

In a bid to bolster its capabilities to tackle threats emanating from hackers, mostly from China and Pakistan, India is all set to have Defence Cyber Agency (DCA) by next month, headquartered in the capital.

Senior Navy officer Rear Admiral Mohit Gupta will be the first head of the DCA.

"We are working to raise the Defence Cyber Agency in May itself. The work has almost been completed. A new building has been hired in the national capital which will act as the headquarters of the formation," sources in the Defence Ministry told ANI here.

As agreed upon by the Defence Ministry and the three services, the cyber agency would be headed by Rear Admiral Gupta.

The Navy is expected to announce his formal appointment anytime, sources said.

DCA is one of the three agencies along with the Special Forces and Space to be set up as per the clearance given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Combined Commanders' Conference in Jodhpur last year.

The DCA will include a lot of existing capability with the armed forces for tackling threats in the cyber domain and will also have the elements of DRDO working in it, sources said.

While the Cyber agency is ready to be launched with its headquarters in New Delhi, the setting up of the Space agency will take some time as the structure for it is still being discussed.

The Special Forces agency would be headed by a Major General rank officer of the Army and is likely to come up at Agra, which already has a Para brigade and the wherewithal to airlift Special Forces operatives in large numbers as the base co-exists with an IAF transport aircraft squadron specialising in these operations.

One of the top Army officers, Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen MM Naravane had recently stated that the units of the Cyber agency will be spread across the country.

''There will be units or cells or dedicated officers at every headquarter to deal with the aspect of cybersecurity,'' he had said.

According to defence sources, almost on a daily basis, efforts are made by hackers, especially from Pakistan and China to break into the military systems to steal information and create disruption.

The tri-services Integrated Defence Staff is also holding an exercise with NTRO, RAW, National Security Council and DRDO where cyber attacks would be launched on critical military infrastructure and the authorities concerned would thwart them using their tools and skills in the domain.
