<p>Upton was the Indian Cricket Team’s mental conditioning coach during the 2011 World Cup, which they lifted for the first time in 28 years, while he held the same position with the Men’s Hockey Team at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, helping them end their trophy drought with a historic bronze. Three years later, he succeeded in guiding another sports star in a game (Chess) he wasn’t aware of much.</p>

<p>However, despite all odds, he took the challenge and helped the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster to accomplish his dream of becoming the youngest world chess champion.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Gukesh stands tall</h2>

<p>At the level he was competing at, D Gukesh needed to be consistent with what he was doing without trying too hard to do something else for the win, and this is where Paddy came into the picture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One of the biggest mistakes newcomers make at big events is thinking they need to do something special. The key is consistency – doing what you’ve been doing really well, one move at a time,” Paddy Upton said in a chat with Chess24.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Soon after claiming the top spot, Gukesh revealed his team of seconds (professional players who assist others), giving a special mention to Upton and emphasising his role in helping Gukesh stand tall.</p>

<p>"Paddy has been a huge, huge support for me in the last six months. Although he is not part of my chess team, he has been a very, very important person in this journey. One of the critical aspects we worked on was managing the uncertainty around my opponent’s form and approach. Paddy doesn’t understand chess deeply, but he understands sport and the psychology behind it," Gukesh said of Paddy’s role in helping him scale new heights in chess.</p>

<p>The newly crowned champion also acknowledged Paddy’s achievements elsewhere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It’s really cool that Paddy helped India win the 2011 World Cup. Thirteen years later, he has helped India win the Chess Championship,” Gukesh noted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gukesh and Upton collaborated midway into this year, with Sandeep Singhal, co-founder of the WestBridge-Anand Chess Academy (WACA), introducing them to each other.&nbsp;</p>

Cricket, Hockey and now Chess: How Paddy Upton guided D Gukesh to World Championship title

<p>Veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh starred in his farewell match as Team India beat Spain 2-1 to win the bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games 2024. For the first time in 52 years, the Indian men’s hockey team won back-to-back bronze medals at the Summer Games in this discipline, winning it twice in 1968 and 1972, then in 2020 (Tokyo), and now in Paris 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to several stars across different sports, everyone congratulated the Indian men's hockey team for the victory.</p>

<p>Following losing to Germany (3-2) in the semi-final, Team India was determined to take home the bronze medal, giving an almost-fitting farewell to the game’s iconic figure, PR Sreejesh.</p>

<p>The Indian captain, Harmanpreet Singh, was on the score sheet, hitting a brace against Spain as India clinched a clinical win to take home the fourth medal (overall) of this Summer Games. The bronze in men’s hockey is India’s fourth bronze medal of the Paris Olympics, with the previous three coming in the Shooting discipline, two of which Manu Bhaker won.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, India conceded the goal in the second quarter (18th minute) before the man of the tournament for the Men in Blue, Harmanpreet stepped up and equalised in the 30th minute; three minutes later, he scored the winner in the 33rd minute.</p>

<p>As the Indian men’s hockey team gear up to take on New Zealand on Sunday in the crossover stage at the ongoing 2023 Hockey World Cup, coach Graham Reid has asked his team to put forward&nbsp;a better defensive performance. For India to directly qualify for the quarters they had to top their group and for that they had to beat Wales by a margin of eight goals in their last pool D match; that, however, didn’t happen as they won it by the margin of two goals only (4-2). Now for them to reach the last eight, they have to win their encounter against the Blacksticks at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, that begins from 7 PM.</p>

<p>Addressing the media ahead of their crucial clash, Reid that despite beating New Zealand&nbsp;twice (4-3 and 7-4) during the FIH Hockey Pro League last year, it would be India who would be under pressure on Sunday evening instead of New Zealand as they have nothing to lose. Also, commenting on how they plan to march ahead in the tournament, Reid said the team must put forward an improved&nbsp;defensive show on Sunday evening to ensure they are setting up a quarters date with world champions Belgium.</p>

<p>"While it is disappointing for Hardik and he was in good form, we have enough talent in the group and Raj Kumar Pal who comes in has done well for the team earlier this year and we are quite confident of a good show," Reid added.</p>

2023 Hockey World Cup: 'We need to tighten our defence against New Zealand', says head coach Graham Reid

<p>The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a huge blow ahead of their next encounter against New Zealand in the ongoing 2023 Hockey World Cup as their midfielder Hardik Rai has now been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. It was during India’s second Pool D match against England when Hardik got injured and was thus rested for the following game against Wales. Expressing frustration over this, Hardik posted on his social media handles saying he didn’t want to leave the field like this. The management has however named Raj Kumar Pal as his replacement in the squad.</p>

<p>In an Instagram post, Hardik wrote, "Unfortunately, my dream of playing in the world cup ended due to a hamstring injury, and I never wanted to leave the field like this, especially in the world cup. They always say everything happens for a reason, and I am trying to figure out why, and it will take some time. It sucks that I can't repay that trust anymore and add value to the field... <p>Meanwhile, Graham Reid, the men’s team head coach had earlier said that Hardik’s injury didn’t look as serious early on. Ruling out Hardik who scored in India’s win over Spain in their first match, Reid said it was a tough decision to make.</p>

<p>Harmanpreet Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored a brace each as the Indian men's hockey team produced a completely dominating performance to rout Canada 8-0 in their third match and jump to the top of Pool B at the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Harmanpreet (7th, 54th minute) converted two penalty corners while Akashdeep Singh (38th, 60th) scored two fine field goals. Amit Rohidas (10th), Lalit Upadhyay (20th), Gurjant Singh (27th) and Mandeep Singh (58th) were the other goal scorers for India.</p>

<p>With the win, India jumped to the top of the pool ahead of England. The Indians play Wales in their final group match on Thursday. The Indians recovered from the jolt of a 4-4 draw against England after leading 3-0 at one stage in their last match as they came out with more purpose and completely dominated Canada in the first two quarters.</p>

He stormed into the circle with his silky stick work and slotted the ball home after receiving a defence-splitting long ball from Varun Kumar. The Indians continued in the same vein in the second quarter and secured two quick penalty corners in the 19th minute, the second of which resulted in a goal.</p>

<p>Lalit slapped in a loose ball off a rebound after Varun Kumar's flick was kept away by Canadian goalkeeper Ethan McTavish to hand India a 3-0 lead. <p>India squandered a three-goal advantage and were held to a 4-4 draw by hosts England in their second Pool B match at the Commonwealth Games men's hockey here on Monday. The Indians started brilliantly and dominated the first two quarters to enjoy a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.</p>

<p>But the Englishmen came out hard in the final two quarters to stun the Indians. England were also helped by three cards to India's Varun Kumar twice, one for five minutes in the first half and then again 10 minutes in the second half, besides a 10-minute suspension for Gurjant Singh in the final quarter for dangerous play.</p>

<p>The Indians scored through Lalit Upadhayay (3rd minute), Mandeep Singh (13th and 22nd) and Harmanpreet Singh (46th) from a penalty corner. England produced a valiant fightback in the second half and scored through Liam Ansell (42nd), Nick Bandurak (47th, 53rd) and Phil Roper (53rd).</p>

<p>Both India and England have faced each other four times in CWG history, winning two matches each. In their last meeting, England came out on top in the bronze medal match at Gold Coast 2018, winning 2-1.</p>

<p>Desperate to avenge that loss, the Indians came out attacking and dominated England in all aspects of the game.<br />
While India were on the offensive, England were content on defending deep.</p>

<p>India didn't take too long to take the lead when Lalit pouched in to score from a rebound off Harmanpreet Singh's flick from a penalty corner. England won a penalty corner soon, but wasted the opportunity.</p>

<p>With less than three minutes remaining from the first quarter, India mounted a counter-attack and Nilakanta Sharma beautifully laid it up for Mandeep, who used his experience to slot home the ball with a brilliant reverse hit to hand India a 2-0 lead.</p>

<p>The Indians continued to dominate the proceedings in the second quarter and mounted attacks after attacks on the English citadel. Mandeep extended India's lead in the 22nd minute when he brilliantly spun to shot towards the goal, and the ball went in after getting a deflection from an English defender.</p>

<p>The Indians continued in same vein in the initial stages of the third quarter, but England made their presence as time went by. England had the better share of possession in the third quarter as India went on a defensive mode.<br />
In the 42nd minute England secured a penalty corner, but first rusher Amit Rohidas came to India's rescue with fearless run to deny Sam Ward.</p>

<p>A minute later Liam Ansell scored from a field effort to reduce the margin. Four minutes later India secured a penalty corner and this time, Harmanpreet was bang on target with a fierce low flick to the bottom right corner of the England goal.</p>

<p>But Varun's suspension hit India hard as England took full use of of the one-man advantage to press hard on the Indian defence and pulled another back in the 47th minute when Bandurak neatly deflected in skipper Jack Waller's pass.</p>

<p>Indian&nbsp;hockey team defeated Spain 3-0 in the Pool A clash in men's hockey at Tokyo Olympics 2020 on July 27 (Tuesday). Team India started well as they scored two goals in the first quarter against Spain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No goals were scored in second and third&nbsp;quarters and India&nbsp;managed to maintain their 2-0 lead.&nbsp;The team entered the half-time break with an advantage thanks to the strikes from Simranjeet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Manpreet Singh-led side bounced back from a 1-7 thrashing at the hands of Australia on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>
