The Indian cricket board has launched investigations into suspected match fixers who approached a member of the women's national team and players in a regional Twenty20 league, its anti-corruption head said on Tuesday.

A case has been registered against two suspects in Bengaluru after they approached a member of the Indian women's team, Ajit Singh, the head of the Anti-Corruption Unit at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told Reuters by telephone.

"She was approached before a home series by people who expected her to be part of the India squad and wanted her to play according to their script," Singh said without identifying the player.

"She asked them to call to another number, recorded the conversation and reported the approach to us," Singh said.

In another incident, several players in this year's Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) were approached by suspected fixers.

"We are trying to find out what their purpose was. They tried to contact through social media. The moment these players realised something was wrong, they cut out the approaches and reported to us," Singh said.

Singh said no player was being probed.

"I consider it a success of our education programme that in both cases, the players did the right thing by reporting the approaches.

Indian Premier League (IPL), BCCI's showpiece Twenty20 competition, was blighted by illegal betting with former India paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth handed a ban following a spot-fixing scandal in 2013.

The Chennai and Rajasthan franchises were also subsequently suspended from the IPL for two years after key officials from both teams were found guilty of illegal betting.

Indian board probes match fixing approaches in women's game and regional league

As India and South Africa get ready to face each other in the first T20I of the three-match series, skipper Virat Kohli lauded wicket-keeper batsman, MS Dhoni, saying 'he always thinks about Indian cricket and there is no replacement for experience'.

Dhoni is not a part of the team squad for the three-match series against South Africa. The wicket-keeper was criticised during the World Cup for batting with a slow strike-rate.

"Experience is always going to matter whether you like it or not. Many players have proven in the past that age is just a number and even Dhoni has done that a lot in his career. One thing great about him is that he thinks for Indian cricket. When to stop playing cricket, is completely an individual decision. No one should give opinions regarding the matter," Kohli told reporters.

Earlier this week, Kohli had posted a picture with Dhoni on Instagram. The skipper remembered 2016 T20 World Cup match against Australia and said that Dhoni made him run like crazy in the match.

However, after the post, netizens were quick to draw conclusions and Dhoni's retirement rumours flooded the internet. However, later, Dhoni's wife Sakshi cleared the air, saying "it's just rumours".&nbsp;

"I did not have anything on my mind, I was just sitting at my home and I just uploaded the picture. It became news, it is a lesson for me about what I think about myself, the world does not necessarily see it that way. That game is very special, I have not openly talked about it so that is why I uploaded the picture but people took it otherwise," Kohli said.

The 30-year-old also got a pavilion named after him at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In a star-studded ceremony, Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium was named after late finance minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

"Initially it was hard to believe. It is a very gracious gesture. You do not think about that as a cricketer, but for someone to give you that honour, it feels special," Kohli stated.

Talking about the upcoming series, Kohli said the side wanted to give opportunities to guys who have been performing well in the domestic circuit for the past two to three years.

He also said that the team has the roadmap for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.

MS Dhoni always thinks about Indian cricket, says Virat Kohli

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag on Wednesday said that Anil Kumble was the perfect candidate to become a national selector.

Sehwag said Kumble has the ability to boost confidence of the players. "When Anil Kumble became the captain, he came to my room and said 'go and play how you play as in the next two series you won't be dropped'. That kind of confidence he gave... I think he is the right person ," Sehwag said.

Kumble, who is now the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, was the Team India coach between 2016 and 2017. He stepped down from that role after India lost to Pakistan in Champions Trophy.

The current selection committee is led by MSK Prasad, however, the panel has been criticised for it being lightweight.

Talking at a public event, Sehwag also said that he finds it difficult to comprehend with conflict of interest rules.

When asked about Sreesanth's ban being reduced to seven years, Sehwag said he wants&nbsp;to see him play for some state or club.

On Tuesday, Sreesanth's life ban for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal was reduced to seven years by BCCI Ombudsman Justice (retired) DK Jain.&nbsp;

Sreesanth was banned by the BCCI for a lifetime in August 2013 along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan for indulging in alleged spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that year.

The Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji on Monday said the conflict of interest rule will be followed 'as of now'&nbsp;and amendments in this regard can be made if the Supreme Court deems fit.

"The ethics officer sends the complaint to us and he then takes the call. He's a former judge of the Supreme Court. He will definitely go by the rules book. Yes, cricket is having a little difficulty in this conflict of interest rule. I think if the papers are put perfectly in the court, they will understand," Edulji told reporters.

Edulji, who was talking to reporters after the conclusion of a meeting between the CoA and Indian cricketers over the conflict of interest rule, said,&nbsp;"Good suggestions came up during the meeting. As of now, a conflict of interest rule has to be followed."

"The amendments will be made once the court gives its verdict. We are trying our level best to see what is best for cricket. If the Supreme Court decides, the amendments will be implemented," she said.&nbsp;

Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who was part of the meeting, said the cricketers put forth their concerns regarding the conflict of interest rule.

"We were asked for a suggestion as a player. We talked about both current and former players. We had an elaborate discussion. Players shared their concerns. It was a good meeting," said Pathan.

Earlier this month, Rahul Dravid was accused of conflict of interest by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association's member Sanjay Gupta. Dravid is the current National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and is also employed as the vice president of India Cements Group.

When this issue came to light, former cricketer Sourav Ganguly had said that conflict of interest has become a new fashion in Indian cricket.

Harbhajan Singh had also agreed with Ganguly's comment. Earlier this year, Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar were questioned over the conflict of interest issue. However, Ravi Thodge, member of the CoA, on August 13 said that there was no conflict of interest in the appointment of Dravid as the NCA's head.&nbsp;

"There is no conflict in Rahul's case. He has got a notice. We cleared his appointment, as we saw no conflict," Thodge had said.

The Supreme Court on January 30, 2017 had nominated a four-member panel CoA to look after the administration of the BCCI in order to implement Lodha Committee reforms.

Miandad has 1,930 runs against Windies from 64 innings whereas Kohli surpassed his record in 34 innings.

He stepped in the field after the early dismissal of opener Shikhar Dhawan in the first over.

The first ODI of the three-match series between India and West Indies was abandoned due to rain on August 8.

Under Kohli's leadership, the team defeated Windies 3-0 in the three-match T20I series.

The 30-year-old Kohli managed to score 106 runs in the T20I series against Windies and he played a crucial 59 run knock in the final T20I.

Kohli has been surrounded by the controversy of late as there were various media reports suggesting the rift between him and vice-captain Rohit Sharma.

However, Kohli dismissed these reports at the pre-departure conference ahead of the West Indies series saying, "If I do not like a person or if I am insecure of a person, you will see that on my face or in my behaviour towards that person and that is how simple it is. I have always praised Rohit whenever I have had an opportunity because I believe he is that good. We have had no issues."

"If the team environment is not good, then the kind of game we are playing for the last two-three years, it would have not been possible. I know how important the dressing room atmosphere, the trust factor is to succeed in international cricket. Our journey from number seven to number one and such consistent performance in the ODI cricket, it cannot happen without camaraderie, respect, and understanding," he had said.

Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Ethics Officer&nbsp;has sent a notice to former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid after Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) member Sanjeev Gupta levelled conflict of interest allegations against the cricketer.

After the Central Government's decision to revoke Article 370 and bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Committee of Administrators (COA) chief, Vinod Rai on Tuesday said that Jammu and Kashmir will continue to play as Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Ladakh will be a part of J&amp;K.

The chief also said that if Ladakh becomes a voting member of the BCCI, then the body would look into the matter and sort things out.

"Jammu and Kashmir would continue to be the Ranji team. Players from Ladakh would be the part of Jammu and Kashmir. If Ladakh becomes voting member, then we will see to it and sort it out," CoA chief Vinod Rai told ANI.

The government has bifurcated the state to create two union territories, but this revelation by the CoA chief indicates that the BCCI does not plan on creating a state body for the newest UT.

The upcoming Ranji Trophy season is scheduled to start in December later this year.

On August 4, Jammu and Kashmir cricket team mentor-cum-coach Irfan Pathan had revealed that he, along with around 100 other cricketers, were asked to leave the camp at the earliest.

This had come after the Jammu and Kashmir administration issued an advisory to tourists and Amarnath Yatris to leave the Valley immediately, citing a terror threat.

Speaking to ANI, Pathan had said, "Our camp has been shut down and the cricketers were sent back to their homes. The camp was from June 14 to July 14 and after a break of ten days, camp restarted from July 25. Yesterday, about 100 players were sent back to their home."

"The matches were scheduled from July 31 and will last till August 17. These matches were organised for the selection of district cricketers," he had added.

The 34-year-old, who was appointed as the mentor-cum-coach of the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team on July 1 last year, had said that the support staff was also asked to leave the state.

There is something about ICC World Cups where inevitably the relationship between Indian media and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/virat-kohli-and-team-attends-practice-session-ahead-of-south-africa-challenge-224017">the national team</a> becomes frosty.&nbsp;

It wasn't great during the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the start seemed to have been on a discordant note during this edition as well after the Indian media contingent decided to boycott an interaction session with net bowlers Deepak Chahar, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed.&nbsp;

With two days left for India's first game against South Africa, it was expected that at least coach Ravi Shastri or a senior player or support staff would address the media as it has been the norm in any bilateral series with skipper Virat Kohli coming on the pre-match day.&nbsp;

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jasprit-bumrah-undergoes-doping-test-224018">Jasprit Bumrah undergoes doping test</a>

However, to everyone's disbelief, Indian team's media manager informed the waiting journalists that since Chahar and Avesh are going back on Tuesday (Khaleel is staying back), it was felt that they should get an opportunity to interact with the media.&nbsp;

Livid with decision, senior members of the fraternity protested vehemently to this outrageous idea and he was told that if the team wants to cancel the session, they are free to do so as it is unfair both for the media as well as the two youngsters, who don't have any authority to answer team related queries.&nbsp;

When asked why no player or support staff was made available, the media manager said that it was done since India haven't started its World Cup campaign yet.&nbsp;

The logic didn't seem convincing as it has never happened two days before a marquee event. It seemed more like a case where the Indian media was being told that you have to make do with whatever we make available for you.&nbsp;

This seemed to be in complete contrast with the relationship that the jumbo Bangladeshi media share with their 'Tigers' or even the handful of Pakistani journalists with their players.&nbsp;

Many were reminded of the 2015 World Cup, when there was a complete gag on media save pre and post-match days and skipper Dhoni would come for every post-match interaction instead of day's performer, who would be interviewed by the official BCCI website.&nbsp;

Indian women's ODI captain Mithali Raj talks about the growing clamour for a women's IPL in India and whether there is enough of a talent pool in the country to make such a tournament viable in an exclusive conversation with WION

Mithali Raj Exclusive: Time right for Women's IPL?

India captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=virat+kohli">Virat Kohli</a> was named the 'Leading Cricketer in the World' for the third time in a row in this year's edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the publication said on Wednesday.

Kohli, 30, was also named as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year along with England's Jos Buttler and Sam Curran, County Championship-winning captain Rory Burns and Tammy Beaumont from the England women's team.

Kohli, who scored only 134 runs during India's previous tour of England in 2014, amassed 593 runs in his side's five-test series last year at an average of over 59 to book his place on the list.

"Despite finishing on the losing side, India captain Virat Kohli shone with the bat, laying to rest his struggles in England in 2014," Wisden editor Lawrence Booth said.

"His test batting, especially in England, was magnificent, while his 50-over form moved to a new level, if that was possible."

Kohli, who also won the ICC's cricketer, test and one-day international player of the year awards in January, scored 2,735 runs across all three international formats in 2018 at an average of 68.37, which included 11 centuries.

India's Smriti Mandhana, who scored 1,291 runs in limited overs, was named the Leading Cricketer in the women's game while Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan was named the Leading Twenty20 Cricketer for the second consecutive year.

Banned Indian cricketer S Sreesanth will get an opportunity to be heard by BCCI's disciplinary committee on the quantum of punishment, the Supreme Court said on Friday.&nbsp;

The apex court noted that BCCI's disciplinary committee may reconsider quantum of punishment to be given to S Sreesanth within 3 months, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

In January, Sreesanth - who was earlier arrested in connection with the 2013 spot-fixing scandal - claimed in the Supreme Court that he had made the confession about his involvement in the alleged crime as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/confessed-to-crime-as-delhi-police-threatened-to-implicate-my-family-sreesanth-to-supreme-court-193984">Delhi Police had threatened that his family members would be implicated and tortured</a>.&nbsp;

Taking into account his submissions made through his lawyer, the apex court questioned him why he had not immediately brought it to the notice of the BCCI that he was being approached for alleged spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

The apex court observed that the conduct of Sreesanth, facing a life ban, in the entire episode was "not good".

Sreesanth, who was discharged by a trial court in 2015 in a criminal case related to alleged spot-fixing, told a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and K M Joseph that life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was harsh and there was no evidence to substantiate the claim that he indulged in any illegality.

"The police had threatened me that my family members would be tortured and implicated unless I confess," senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for Sreesanth, told the court.

The 35-year-old cricketer has challenged in the apex court the decision of a division bench of the Kerala High Court which restored the ban imposed on him, PTI reported.&nbsp;

The senior counsel said Sreesanth had failed to inform the board about him being approached for spot-fixing but even if he did not do this, the maximum ban that could be imposed upon him was five years.

As many as 36 accused in the spot-fixing case, including Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila, were discharged by a trial court here in July 2015. The BCCI had, however, refused to alter its disciplinary decision of life ban on Sreesanth even after the trial court's verdict.

A single-judge bench of the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban imposed on Sreesanth by the BCCI and had set aside all proceedings against him initiated by the board.

Later, a division bench of the high court had restored the ban on a petition filed by the BCCI against the single-judge bench's order.

Virat Kohli tries to find joy in the simplest of things in life when he is not focussed on winning matches for India.&nbsp;

And nothing can beat a romantic getaway with wife Anushka by his side on a full moon night.&nbsp;

The insane fan following that both Kohli and his wife, a leading actress in Hindi films enjoy in India, it becomes difficult to enjoy their own little time away from public glare.&nbsp;

However, on tour in a scenic country like New Zealand, the Indian captain enjoys those long walks with his lady love and not being identified.&nbsp;

"Look me and my wife like to do normal things. We just like to go out for walks," Kohli told Sky Sports in an interview, which has also been uploaded by bcci.Tv.&nbsp;

"If we are in a place like Napier, it's beautiful. (One of the nights), We were at the Marine parade, enjoying full moon sitting on the bench and just talking.&nbsp;

"It's actually the simplest thing that gives us joy purely because we are always in the public eye and we are always doing things in-front of people. To get away and not known by anyone is something that we both like," the Indian captain said.&nbsp;

With 64 international hundreds, Kohli is expected to break all international records but he admits that he never thought 10 years back that he will come this far.&nbsp;

"When I started, if someone had told me that 10 years down the line, I would be here in my career, I would have never believed them. I play the game because of the joy that I have and purely for the love of the game and the passion that I have for playing for my country," he said.&nbsp;

"If I get attached to stats that means my graph is going down and there is something wrong in my head. Personally, I can't play in that sort of mindset. I can't stand on the field thinking that I have to do something for myself."

Virat Kohli tries to find joy in the simplest of things in life when he is not focussed on winning matches for India. And nothing can beat a romantic getaway with wife Anushka by his side on a full moon night.

Virat Kohli tries to find joy in the simplest of things in life when he is not focussed on winning matches for India. And nothing can beat a romantic getaway with wife Anushka by his side on a full moon night. The insane fan following that both Kohli and his wife, a leading actress in Hindi films enjoy in India, it becomes difficult to enjoy their own little time away from public glare. However, on tour in a scenic country like New Zealand, the Indian captain enjoys those long walks with his lady love and not being identified. "Look me and my wife like to do normal things. We just like to go out for walks," Kohli told Sky Sports in an interview, which has also been uploaded by bcci.Tv. "If we are in a place like Napier, it's beautiful. (One of the nights), We were at the Marine parade, enjoying full moon sitting on the bench and just talking. "It's actually the simplest thing that gives us joy purely because we are always in the public eye and we are always doing things in-front of people. To get away and not known by anyone is something that we both like," the Indian captain said. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a net worth of $295 Million as of 2016. Every year, they spend crores of rupees in litigation, several uncalculated amounts are disbursed to promote Indian Premier League (IPL) and other cricket tournaments and let's not forget the office-bearers who are entitled to on trips overseas and for work within the country. &nbsp;

However, little is being done to take care of former players struggling to meet their daily needs. &nbsp;&nbsp;

For a moment, forget the former big shots, let's visualise about those who don’t reach the highest level and end up being domestic cricketers. Some don't have enough cash to even pay the hospital bills in case of an emergency.&nbsp;

Isn't the thought scary?
&nbsp;
Yes, it is. And the need to call attention to it became significant after former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin had to be put on a ventilator after suffering extensive damage to his liver and lungs and the family members were forced to beg to the Board to come to their rescue.&nbsp;

The board did but with only a paltry amount of Rs 5 lakh.&nbsp;

Imagine, Rs 5 lakh is the amount they could all offer from the Benevolent Fund to a person who has played wearing the blue jersey, aiming to bring laurels to his country. &nbsp;

Now, its easy to presume the life of the former domestic cricketers, who couldn't make it this big.&nbsp;

Supreme Court-appointed CoA chief, Vinod Rai, has a habit of issuing directives on a range of issues but preferred to stay tight-lipped. Couldn't he issue a directive to the concerned professional appointees of the Board to release a special amount for the 46-year-old Martin? But silence says it all.

And therefore to all unsung heroes, we are 'unreservedly' sorry because our board members are busy fighting over the reins of the board with the Supreme Court-appointed committee rather than strategising a way to improve the players' condition in India.&nbsp;

As per reports, the bill has crossed over Rs 11 lakh. Martin is still on ventilator support and the next hours are crucial.

Sourav Ganguly, who was the captain when Martin made his debut, went beyond mere words and effected a bank transfer in Martin’s favour.

He also spoke to Khayati, wife of the ailing Jacob Martin, and assured complete support.

Cricketer Krunal Pandya, elder brother of Hardik Pandya, left a blank cheque with Sanjay Patel, former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Baroda Cricket Association, to help his ailing senior.&nbsp;

Former pacer Zaheer Khan made another call to Patel, repeating his wish to assist in whatever manner he can, while Ashish Nehra too has joined the drive to help Martin quickly get back on his feet.

Well, wake up BCCI as it is the board's job that is going on as an extended help from former cricketers, who possibly have a better understanding of the players' condition in the country.&nbsp;

BCCI needs a bigger heart to save ex-cricketer Jacob Martin

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-out-from-1st-odi-amid-recommendation-of-suspension-189599">Suspended cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul</a> Monday tendered "unconditional" apologies for their sexist comments during a TV chat show amid CoA chief Vinod Rai saying that the BCCI should correct the two players, not end their careers.&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, despite the apologies tendered by the duo, 10 BCCI units demanded a Special General Meeting to appoint an ombudsman for carrying out an inquiry. Rai's fellow Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji wants an inquiry done by CoA and the BCCI office-bearers.

"Yes, Hardik and Rahul have submitted their reply to the fresh showcause notices that were served to them. They have tendered unconditional apology.

The CoA chief has instructed the CEO to conduct an inquiry as per clause 41 (c) of the new BCCI constitution," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/coa-chief-vinod-rai-wants-quick-inquiry-edulji-fears-cover-up-189826">Edulji fears a "</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/coa-chief-vinod-rai-wants-quick-inquiry-edulji-fears-cover-up-189826">cover up</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/coa-chief-vinod-rai-wants-quick-inquiry-edulji-fears-cover-up-189826">"</a> in the controversy, triggered by Pandya and Rahul's much-condemned statements on 'Koffee with Karan' in which they spoke about hookups with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents. The comments have been described as "inappropriate" by India skipper Virat Kohli.

Brought back midway from the tour of Australia, Pandya and Rahul's immediate fate hangs in balance with the World Cup less than four months away.

Rai, in an e-mail to Edulji, said that the "BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers".

"Please be assured that the desire to conduct the inquiry is not a desire to 'cover up'. The interest of cricket in India has to be kept in mind. The off the ground act of the players was deplorable. It was crass as I said immediately after reading the comments," Rai wrote.&nbsp;

"It is our responsibility to reprimand them, take corrective action, sensitise them of their misdemeanour and then get them back on to the ground once they have suffered the consequences," he said.

The former CAG stated in his mail that players have been "shamed" after being recalled from an international tour, the ongoing ODI series against Australia, and principles of natural justice demand that they be heard.

"We have shamed them by recalling them from an ongoing tour. We have suspended them from further games. We need to correct them and not bring their career to a cul de sac by indefinitely delaying a decision. These misdemeanours require swift action, with a corrective approach," he added.&nbsp;

The road to redemption for the duo could prove to be tricky. Rai has instructed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to carry out a preliminary inquiry but Board members along with Edulji want otherwise.

Rai justified Johri intitiating the probe, citing the BCCI constitution. Edulji feels Johri, because of past allegations of sexual harassment against him, should not be entrusted with the task.&nbsp;

"The CEO must fulfil his duty as per Rule 41(C) and conduct the inquiry after receiving the explanation of the players. He must ensure that the norms of natural justice are fulfilled," Raid said.&nbsp;

The e-mail also states that a request has been made to the Supreme Court to appoint an Ombudsman for the case, on the advice of the legal team.

"During the 17th (January) hearing, we request the hon Court to appoint an Ombudsman. However, in the unlikely event of the Hon. Court not being able to appoint the Ombudsman in the hearing scheduled for the 17th January 2019, we must go ahead and appoint an ad-hoc ombudsman as per legal advice received by us.&nbsp;

"The Ombudsman, so appointed, can take a final view on the players based on the inquiry report submitted by the CEO," he wrote.
In another development, acting president CK Khanna received requisitions from 10 state units demanding a Special General Meeting at the earliest.

As per the new constitution, the secretary -- in this case the acting secretary -- can call an SGM on 21 days' notice but if it has to be an Emergent SGM within 10 days, the board president (acting president) in this case has to convene the meeting.

"It will be interesting what call Khanna will take. If I remember, he once didn't sign the minutes of SGM fearing that it would be in violation of Supreme

Court orders. On another occasion, he didn't even attend an SGM," a state unit member, who was present during both the meetings, said.

"There is a possibility that Khanna may instruct Amitabh Chaudhary to call a normal SGM with 21 days' notice which a secretary is allowed to," he added.&nbsp;

BCCI sends suspension note to Hardik Pandya over sexist remarks made on TV show

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded recently retired cricketer Gautam Gambhir for his contribution to the sport as well for his efforts to bring "positive difference in the lives of the lesser privileged".&nbsp;

PM Modi made a special mention of the contribution made by Gambhir during India's triumphant campaign at the ICC World Twenty20 2007 and the ICC World Cup (50-over) in 2011.

"Let me begin by congratulating you for your stupendous contribution to Indian sports! India will always be grateful to you for you memorable performances, many of which resulted in historic victories for our nation," Modi wrote in the letter which was posted by Gambhir on his Twitter handle.

Gambhir thanked the PM for his kind words.&nbsp;

"Thanks @narendramodi @PMOIndia for the kind words. Nothing of this would have been possible without love and support of our fellow countrymen. All these deeds are dedicated to our country," he said in the same tweet posted along with the letter.&nbsp;

Modi praised Gambhir's passion for the game.

"I am sure the journey was filled with both ups and downs but your dedication and persistence ensured that you began to play for the nation. Within a short span, you emerged as a dependable opener, who often took the team to flying starts," the Prime Minister said.

The 37-year-old Gambhir was one of the most outspoken sportsmen who do not shy away from voicing their opinions on several issues facing the nation.&nbsp;

PM Modi lauds Gambhir for his contribution to Indian cricket and his work on social causes

VVS Laxman is a name that needs no introduction. In his 15-year-long career, the man has played some breathtaking knocks for India, saved the team in some tricky situations, and set umpteen records.&nbsp;

However, only a few know that the man might not even have become a cricketer in the first place.

Hailing from a family of doctors, everyone thought the former Indian cricketer would go into medicine.&nbsp; But at the age of 17, and on the verge of getting a medical seat, he made the decision that would change his life completely.

I even cracked the common entrance exam for engineering and medicine and through sports quota I almost got enrolled in one of the famous medical colleges in Hyderabad, and simultaneously my cricketing career was also progressing, so that was one of the toughest decisions for me and my family because in early 1990's, cricket was not a professional but an amateur sport."

The former right-handed batsman added that although his parents did not stand in the way of his dream, they did give him a deadline.&nbsp;

"The opportunity came with a deadline of five years. Within those five years, if I don’t achieve my dream of playing for my country, I had to leave the game, come and again pursue my goal of becoming a doctor.

Since his cricketing days, Laxman has been an admirer of former Indian captain Anil Kumble. He was one of the few cricketers who openly spoke about the strained relation between Kumble and current Indian captain Virat Kohli, which saw Kumble's exit as the Indian coach.

When asked to share the historical moment when Kumble bowled with a broken jaw, Laxman said if anyone could do that was only Anil.&nbsp;

However, only a few know that the man might not even have become a cricketer in the first place. Hailing from a family of doctors, everyone thought the former Indian cricketer would go into medicine. But at the age of 17, and on the verge of getting a medical seat, he made the decision that would change his life completely. Sunil Gavaskar has come out in support of senior Indian woman cricketer Mithali Raj in the controversy surrounding her dropping from the World T20 semifinal team, saying a player of her experience should not have been left out of the crucial match.

The 35-year-old Mithali was left out of the World T20 semi-final against England that raised quite a few eyebrows after India's eight-wicket loss. She was dropped despite scoring back-to-back fifties in the group stage of the competition held in the West Indies.

The team management cited cricketing logic -- it did not want to change a winning combination -- behind the move to drop Mithali but former skipper Gavaskar did not agree with that.

"I feel sorry for Mithali. She has a very good point. She has served Indian cricket for 20 years. She scored runs, she won player of the match in both matches (she played at the World T20)," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.

"She was injured for one game but fit for the next game. Just convert this situation into the men's game. If you had a Virat Kohli who was injured for one game and then is fit for the knockout, will you leave him out?&nbsp;

"You have to pick your best player for the knockouts. You needed the experience and expertise of Mithali Raj," he said.

Mithali had written a letter to the BCCI, accusing coach Ramesh Powar and Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji, saying the two are biased against her and have tried to "destroy" her.&nbsp;

Gavaskar said it was difficult to comment on Powar's role from a distance but made it clear that the reason given for Mithali's dropping was wrong.

"What happened with Powar. It is very difficult to comment on that from here. But it's difficult to accept whatever the reason was. They said they wanted to stick with the same team, I don't think that's a good enough excuse. You can't drop someone like Mithali Raj," said the former captain.&nbsp;

Being the highest-profile athlete in the world's second most populous country, India cricket captain Virat Kohli has built such a formidable brand across the spectrum that even his occasional brash and indiscrete comments fail to tarnish it.

Watches, cars, sports shoes, motorbikes, clothes, ride services, tires, snacks, health foods, headphones - even toothbrushes -- they have all had the Kohli marketing treatment.

The 30-year-old cricketer with tattooed arms and coiffured hair currently endorses 21 brands including Tissot, Audi, Puma, Uber and Hero, pushing him into the Forbes's 2018 list of the world's 100 highest-paid athletes.

Coming in at No. 83 on the back of his estimated $24 million income over the previous 12 months, Kohli is the world's top-earning cricketer and comes in ahead of other high-profile athletes such as Novak Djokovic and Sergio Aguero.

It is unlikely he would ever be able to challenge the likes of current Forbes' No.1 Floyd Mayweather or No. 2 Lionel Messi due to cricket's appeal being mostly tied to a small batch of predominantly Commonwealth countries.

However, he could soon eclipse Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the highest earning Indian sportsman ever. Former India cricket captain Dhoni earned $31 million in 2015 as he promoted a series of brands.

His success off the pitch is matched by his prowess on it.

A prolific scorer of runs, on Sunday he produced a match-winning innings to help India to victory over Australia and his performances have ensured he enjoys rock star status in the cricket-mad country of 1.3 billion.

He wed actress Anushka Sharma last year to create a marriage between cricket and Bollywood, India's two biggest obsessions, helping give him a 'family man' image that can appeal to a middle-class audience - and harness its spending power.

That does not mean he has lost traction with India's youth.

"The youth of the country - and more than half of India's population are under 25 - can identify themselves with the man living their dream," said Kohli biographer Vijay Lokapally.

Kohli has a strong social media presence with over 37 million fans on Facebook and is followed by more than 25 million on Instagram and 27.1 million on Twitter.

"He speaks his mind, takes stands, interacts on social media - all of it goes well with his fans," Lokapally said, describing Kohli as "complete theatre".

Prepared to shock

His sponsors have had a bumpy ride at times.

When a cricket fan recently described Kohli, the world's top-ranked Test batsman, as "overrated" and said he would rather watch Australian and English batsmen than "these Indians", Kohli responded with both barrels.

"You should go and live somewhere else, you know," he said in a video posted on his personal telephone app, which he uses to interact with fans and sell merchandise.

"Why are you living in our country and loving other countries? I don't mind you not liking me but I don't think you should live in our country..."

Kohli later said he was "all for freedom of choice" and while the episode burnished his reputation as being touchy about criticism it did little to damage his brand.

Quite the opposite, said Tuhin Mishra, managing director of sports marketing firm Baseline Ventures.

"Such frankness can actually boost the brand, provided it aligns with the brand's message," said Mishra, whose firm manages other Indian cricketers including Ravindra Jadeja and Prithvi Shaw.

"After all, brands also want to be seen as patriotic

"Sports and Bollywood stars usually avoid controversies, but fans want their icons to have a voice," he added.

Cornerstone Sport &amp; Entertainment, the company which represents Kohli, declined to discuss his endorsements and sponsorships.

According to Forbes, $20 million of his total comes from endorsements and $4 million from salary and so-called "winnings", which would include prize money.

Kohli's earnings could continue to increase thanks to India's strong growth - it is the fastest growing large economy in the world and that should mean many more marketing dollars - and the obsessive interest in cricket here and across the Indian diaspora.

He has smoothed out some of his rough edges. He does not endorse soft drinks or skin-lightening cream anymore, advocates a healthy lifestyle, and comes across as a family man and a leader.

He fights for salary hikes for his players, demands that players' partners be allowed on tours, and seeks to influence who is appointed team coach.

Mishra of Baseline Ventures said Kohli's appeal had evolved.

"As an aggressive youngster, he was attractive to certain brands then. As married, mature and responsible captain of the team, he is attractive to another set of brands now," he said.

India vs Australia 2018-19: Schedule, Squad, Time and Venue

South African skipper <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=faf+du+plessis">Faf du Plessis</a> has offered tips to the Australian team for their upcoming clashes against India.

Du Plessis, who recently led the Proteas in three one-dayers against Australia, said there had been a marked change in Aussies on-field behaviour.

However, he but urged them not to totally sacrifice their confrontational approach.

But he suggested to avoid confrontation with <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=virat+kohli">Virat Kohli</a> and give him "silent treatment" during the India vs Australia matches.

"There are guys like that in international cricket (who enjoy the confrontation). We feel like that when we play against someone like Virat Kohli, he wants to get into the fight," the Protea said.

"There's one or two guys in each team around the world that we as a team discuss before playing against them. We're like, 'better not say too much to him because you'll get him going'."

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/india-vs-australia-2018-19-schedule-teams-time-and-venue-177740">India vs Australia 2018-19: Schedule, Squad, Time and Venue</a>

Australia have clearly toned down their sledging since a ball-tampering scandal broke that involved Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

Du Plessis' South Africa beat India 2-1 in the series but Kohli emerged as the top run-getter with an aggregate of 286 from three Tests at an average of 47.66.

Du Plessis said, "He's an amazing player. We gave him the silent treatment and he still scored runs in South Africa, but we felt like it was not huge runs. He scored the one hundred there in Centurion when the wicket was slow.

"So every team will have what they think works for us, that was silent treatment."&nbsp;

South African skipper Faf du Plessis has offered tips to the Australian team for their upcoming clashes against India. Du Plessis, who recently led the Proteas in three one-dayers against Australia, said there had been a marked change in Aussies on-field behaviour. However, he but urged them not to totally sacrifice their confrontational approach. But he suggested to avoid confrontation with Virat Kohli and give him "silent treatment" during the India vs Australia matches. "There are guys like that in international cricket (who enjoy the confrontation). We feel like that when we play against someone like Virat Kohli, he wants to get into the fight," the Protea said. "There's one or two guys in each team around the world that we as a team discuss before playing against them. We're like, 'better not say too much to him because you'll get him going'." India vs Australia 2018-19: Schedule, Squad, Time and Venue Australia have clearly toned down their sledging since a ball-tampering scandal broke that involved Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft. Du Plessis' South Africa beat India 2-1 in the series but Kohli emerged as the top run-getter with an aggregate of 286 from three Tests at an average of 47.66. Faf du Plessis suggests Australian team to avoid confrontation with Virat Kohli

Opener Shikhar Dhawan smashed 92 as India completed a six-wicket Twenty20 international win on the last ball against West Indies on Sunday to sweep the three-match series.

Dhawan put on a crucial 130-run third wicket stand with Rishabh Pant, who hit 58, to bring India close to their target of 182 before West Indies hit back in Chennai.

Pant was out in the 19th over and Dhawan lost his wicket on the penultimate ball of the match, but Manish Pandey hit the winning run to deny West Indies any chance of a consolation victory. A tie would have taken the match into a super over.

The result caps off a complete domination by India, who had won the Tests 2-0 and then the one-day international series 3-1 against the visiting West Indians.

But the left-handed pair of Dhawan and Pant put the hosts' chase on track after they had lost two early wickets including their in-form skipper Rohit Sharma for four.
