India has withdrawn a planned reopening of the Taj Mahal, citing the risk of new coronavirus infections spreading in Agra from visitors flocking to see the 17th century monument to love.

Local authorities issued a new advisory late on Sunday ordering an extension of lockdown curbs on monuments in and around Agra. The government order did not specify the duration of the lockdown for monuments that have been closed since March.

“In the interest of the public, it has been decided that opening monuments in Agra will not be advisable as of now”, the district authorities said in a notice published in Hindi.

Agra, one of India’s first big clusters of the virus, remains the worst-affected city in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state.

It was immediately not clear whether the government would scrap its plan to reopen other monuments across the country, such as New Delhi’s historic Red Fort.

The Indian Air Force is significantly enhancing deployment of its frontline jets, attack helicopters and transport fleet in all its key bases guarding the airspace along the Line of Actual Control in view of heightened border tension with China in eastern Ladakh, people familiar with the development said on Saturday.

The IAF has also pressed into service a fleet of C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft as well as C-130J Super Hercules in transporting heavy military equipment and weaponry to several forward bases to further ramp up India's military preparedness in the region.

The IAF is also using its Ilyushin-76 fleet to transport troops to various areas along the Line of Actual Control, the 3,500 km de-facto border between India and China, the people cited above said.

They said the force has already moved a sizeable number of its frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar, Mirage 2000 aircraft to several key air bases including Leh and Srinagar.

It has also deployed Apache attack choppers and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters to transport troops to various forward locations.

The frontline fighter jets have increased their sorties in Ladakh and nearby areas in the last few days as part of increased alert level, and probably as a response to expanded activities of the Chinese air force, the people said.

"We are fully ready to deal with any situation," said a senior official when asked about increasing activities of the IAF in Ladakh and other regions.

Last month, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria made a quiet visit to Ladakh and Srinagar air bases to review the Indian Air Force's preparedness to deal with any eventualities in the region.

The Indian and Chinese armies are locked in a bitter standoff in multiple locations in eastern Ladakh for the last seven weeks.

The tension escalated manifold after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent clash in Galwan Valley on June 15. The Chinese side also suffered casualties but it is yet to give out the details.

India has been insisting on restoration of status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh to restore peace and tranquillity in the region.

India and China have held several rounds of diplomatic and military talks in the last few weeks to ease tension in the region. However, there was no visible sign of end to the standoff though the two sides agreed to initiate disengagement of the forces from the region.

Pervaiz Elahi, the speaker of Pakistan's Punjab assembly has said that Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and the construction of a temple on its soil is against the very spirit of Islam.&nbsp;

Elahi is one of Imran Khan's strongest allies and he is against the construction of a temple and a crematorium in Islamabad.

He just doesn't want new temples. His views may be archaic. But Elahi is not the only one who wants his country to live up to its values. He is speaking for many in Pakistan.

&nbsp;Lawyers are opposing the temple's construction. Just two days back, an advocate filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court.

The purpose was the same, halt the construction of the new temple. The reasons were the same. Instead of constructing a new temple --- why not renovate the old ones?

Then there are clerics against the temple's construction. Mufti Ziauddin, a top cleric in Pakistan has even issued a fatwa which is a ruling under the Islamic law. The fatwa declares the temple's construction illegal because according to the cleric, building new places of worship is not permitted in Islamic nations.

Is there any such rule? &nbsp;The United Arab Emirates, an Islamic kingdom had allotted land for building a temple. But in Pakistan, constructing new temples is 'unislamic'.

Forcefully converting minorities meanwhile is permitted.

The hypocrisy is by no means limited to matters of religion. It is on display -- every time Pakistan cries foul over terror.

First, the Pakistani prime minister called Osama bin Laden, a martyr. Then, he tried blaming India for the attack on the Karachi Stock Exchange last week. Yesterday, this hypocrisy was called out at the UNSC. Pakistan's all-weather ally, China, drafted a statement condemning the attack.

It was placed under a silent procedure --- under which if no member state raises any objections -- the draft within a specified time is considered adopted.

But the statement was stalled twice from being adopted. Germany was the first country to break the silence procedure. It delayed the issuance of the press statement saying it needed to "consult the capital".

Then it was America which broke the silence, further delaying the statement from being issued. Observers say the delay was to send a message to Pakistan.

A message that it cannot call the most dreaded face of terrorism a martyr on one hand and on the other hand expect condemnation over an attack it is blaming India for. The statement was released only after the deadline had passed. It used a standard template for condemning all terror attacks.

Islamabad's attempt to blame India failed miserably. Because India never had anything do with the attack. It was the Balochistan Liberation Army which carried out the attack.

What was the purpose? To send a warning to Pakistan and China to quit Balochistan.

Reports say, he is planning to bring in an ordinance now -- something that could delay the split of his party.&nbsp;

According to a report, the ambassador held a meeting with key leaders of the Nepal Communist Party in May. She convinced them to work together, instead of fighting each other. This intervention may have helped Oli back then, but things are very different now. China's influence is not limited to politics.

In 2019,&nbsp;the trade volume between China and Nepal touched 1.5 billion dollars. China is the second largest source of tourists in Nepal. It&nbsp;pulls strings in Nepal using its chequebook -- the&nbsp;money is being used to buy compliance.

China, by far, is the biggest aid provider for Nepal. Its grant is valued at 106 million dollars. In return, it gets more access.

China picked up 25 reconstruction projects after the earthquake in 2015. China is building its soft power too.

Last year, several private schools in Nepal made Mandarin a compulsory subject for students.

Their statement was read at the UN Human Rights Council at Geneva, which said: "The joint declaration, a legally binding treaty, registered with the United Nations, sets out that Hong Kong is guaranteed a high degree of autonomy and rights and freedoms, including those of the person, of the press, of assembly, and of association and that the ICCPR and ICESR shall remain in force. Making such a law without the direct participation of Hong Kong's people, legislature or judiciary of Hong Kong undermines 'one country, two systems'."&nbsp;

The criticism against China has not been all words.

The United State too is in this list of countries standing against China. It has rolled out a list of punishments. Washington is imposing sanctions on those violating Hong Kong's autonomy.

&nbsp;It has also announced visa restrictions on some CCP officials. The US has said it would stop exporting equipment to Hong Kong. Washington has also made it clear that the new law has risked the special trade relations that it shares with Hong Kong.

&nbsp;Another country building pressure on China is Taiwan. Taipei is offering asylum to Hong Kong-ers. Those who are being forced to flee the city because of this punishing law.

The Taiwan-Hong Kong service and exchange office were opened today--- to help with the fresh arrival of Hong Kongers. Taiwan says the move is "an important milestone for the government to further support democracy and freedom in Hong Kong."

The United Kingdom too said it will amend immigration laws so that it easy for Hong Kongers to move. The European parliament has asked its member states to adopt sanctions against the CCP officials.

Canada has issued a travel advisory which said that the country may be "at increased risk of arbitrary detention on national security grounds and possible extradition to mainland China".

Look at the number of countries that have come together to build pressure on China.&nbsp;

But there is one clear absentee, India.

A sensitive post, he will represent India in more than 25 important organisations of UN in Geneva including World Health Organisation and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

He will have an important task at hand given&nbsp;calls are growing for reforms at the World Health Organisation due to its failure to deal with the COVID pandemic. India was appointed as the chair of the executive committed of the WHO this year at the World Health Assembly earlier this year. New Delhi was among more than 60 countries to&nbsp;back a resolution that called for finding the source of COVID crisis.

Pandey will also represent India at International Labour Organisation, Universal Postal Union, one of the oldest arms of UN that even predates UN, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), World Intellectual Property Organisation, International Parliamentary Union,&nbsp;United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Pandey, an&nbsp;Arabic speaker has served in Cairo, Syria in initial days and was later the first Secretary in Islamabad, Kabul and in Geneva at the Mission to Conference on Disarmament. He has also served as India's consul general in&nbsp;Guangzhou, Deputy chief of mission in Paris DCM Paris, Ambassador to Muscat.&nbsp;His last posting was as AS in the D &amp; ISA Division.

The previous envoy to these UN bodies in Geneva was&nbsp;Rajiv K&nbsp;Chander who&nbsp;completed his three-year team. Under his leadership, India was able to successfully thwart Pakistan's&nbsp;attempt to rake Kashmir at Human Rights Council after the abrogation of Article 370 that removed special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Pakistani FM had himself reached to UNHRC calling for a special session, something that did not get much of a support.
