A combination of sheer arrogance and negligence&nbsp;has led to the death of four people on the Purvanchal Expressway in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the four friends were travelling in a BMW car at speeds as high as 230 km/hr to Delhi when they rammed into a container truck. One of the co-passenger in the car started a Facebook Live where he showed the&nbsp;car racing through the highway with others excitedly saying that the speedometer may next breach the 300 km/hr mark.

The friends constantly egged the driver to chase the 300&nbsp;km/hr mark and told him to not brake and keep at it.&nbsp;

However, in what can be termed as a prophecy coming true, moments before the disaster, one of the friends can he heard saying "charo marenge (all four of us will die)". Soon enough, tragedy strikes and the four men die on the spot.

After the news of the accident was communicated, the police and&nbsp;Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) officials reached the spot, only to find the&nbsp;pummeled car in a heap and the blood-smeared bodies of the passengers and driver, squished beyond range for a naked-eye identification.

So far, the authorities have identified three of the four people. The car was reportedly being driven by 35-year-old Dr Anand Prakash who was a professor in a medical college in the Eastern Indian state of Bihar and resided in the city of Dehri. Akhilesh Singh (35), and Deepak Kumar (37) are the other two deceased while the identity of the fourth is yet to be confirmed.&nbsp;

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, deaths by road accidents in India have increased by almost 17 per cent in 2021 compared to 2020.&nbsp;

In 2021, 155,000&nbsp;died in accidents on Indian roads, up from 133,000 in 2020, when much of the year saw a nationwide lockdown. Total&nbsp;road accidents reported were 403,000 in 2021, up from 354,000 the year before.

The highest number of road accidents every year is attributed to negligent driving and speeding.&nbsp;

The disruption of COVID-19 had lent a big blow to the global supply chains, unsettling global and regional connectivity. The sanctions on Russian crude and natural gas have critically affected many European countries. The supply-side constraints have been the major factor behind the high inflation rates reported by chief economies of the world.&nbsp;

Fears of recession

So far, India has fared better than the US and other western economies. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uk-pm-liz-truss-economic-plan-was-a-mistake-says-biden-525756">inflation</a> rate in India is hovering around 7 per cent&nbsp;which is still in the manageable spectrum. The US and many European countries consistently report inflation rates of over 8 per cent&nbsp;which is way over the norms of advanced economies.

The continuing hawkish stance of the Federal Reserve is further bolstering fears of recession. The climate of creeping instability is forcing all the money to be parked in safe havens like the US dollar as a hedge against potential risks. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) had been net sellers in the Indian Stock Market during September.&nbsp;

Yuan depreciation in recent months has made Chinese imports much more attractive that further led to the lowering of demand for the Indian Rupee. Aggregately, prevailing economic conditions are causing widening of the Current Account Deficit (CAD) of the country. As per the latest data from RBI, the CAD increased from 1.5 per cent&nbsp;of the GDP in the January-March quarter to 2.8 per cent&nbsp;of the GDP in the April-June quarter.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-man-wrongly-detained-at-abu-dhabi-airport-over-mistaken-identity-lands-in-delhi-525936">India</a> (RBI), India’s central bank, sold its Foreign Exchange Reserves (Forex) aggressively from July to prevent the Rupee from crossing the psychological mark of 80. India’s Forex dropped to $537.5 billion by 23 September, the lowest level since August 2020.

The Rupee settlement system 

The RBI for a long time has been deliberating on ways to reduce dependence on the US dollar and tide over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/brazil-bolsonaro-lula-face-off-in-first-debate-525954">US</a> sanctions in various parts of the globe. In July, the RBI permitted international trade to be invoiced, denominated, and settled in Indian Rupee. Market forces would determine the rate of exchange of trade. Touted as an early step toward internationalization of the Indian Rupee, it remains to be seen how the step will play out in the long term.

Deputy Governor of the RBI said on 30 September&nbsp;that around five countries have responded positively to its plan to settle international trade in Rupees, but the process involves technicalities at the level of banks and is going to take some time.&nbsp;

If implemented in the long term, the mechanism would reduce the over-dependence on the US dollar and save precious Forex reserves. In the near future, major benefits could be reaped in trade with Russia and Iran, where the US sanctions have made the trade in US dollars almost an impossibility. Countries with an export surplus with India might not be largely enthusiastic straightaway, because they will have no use for excess Rupee unless it has achieved widespread international acceptance.

Inclusion in Global bond indices

India’s efforts to get included in the Global bond indices is another step by the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-protests-raisi-accuses-biden-of-inciting-chaos-in-the-country-525946"> government</a> that could alter the currency status-quo. The RBI is working closely with the government to enable international settlement of government securities and incorporation of rupee-denominated bonds in Global bond indices.&nbsp;

Russia’s recent exclusion from the JP Morgan government bond index-emerging markets (GBI-EM) has left the index unbalanced boosting India’s chances of inclusion. Morgan Stanley, a leading brokerage firm said that the inclusion could attract $170 billion to $250 billion to India in foreign inflows over the next decade. The firm also expects the Rupee to appreciate by 2 per cent every year in REER (Real Effective Exchange Rate) terms, in addition to creating a better investment climate.

JP Morgan GBI-EM and FTSE Russell—two Global bond indices have already put India on the watch list for possible inclusion. Major hindrances that need to be removed before inclusion are India’s local bond settlement rules and tax hurdles. In September, GBI-EM deferred inclusion of Indian government bonds till early next year. The government is not yet willing to exempt foreign investors from capital gains tax because it would discriminate against domestic investors.

Pilot launch of India’s digital currency

On 7 October, the RBI released a concept note on the proposed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/bitcoin-firm-nydig-laid-off-about-a-third-of-staff-in-september-reports-say-525289">digital</a> Rupee. One of its stated objectives is the improvement in cross-border transactions. India is wary of the rapidly expanding Chinese CDBC (Central bank digital currency) project and fears being left behind if digital Yuan increases its stature as a global currency. India feels it has to set the ball rolling, to gain a fair share of future global transactions, denominated in Rupee. 

Gradual depreciation of the Rupee may be good for boosting India’s exports. Nevertheless, it is imperative to prevent drastic falls and preserve currency stability. Inclusion in Global bond indices would cater well for Rupee stability because it allows for parking of global passive funds in Indian markets. Expanding the horizons of Rupee will increase its worldwide acceptance and builds trust. Precisely the reason why the national government is bent on internationalization of the Rupee, even if it shrinks the fiscal space of the government.

Scammers are acting as customer service representatives from Vodafone, Airtel, or Jio, according to a new investigation by Check Point Software, and they are helping unwary clients upgrade their 4G SIMs to 5G.

The latest phishing technique involves sending clients phishing URLs that ask them to submit sensitive or personal data, like bank passwords or OTPs, and deducting money from their accounts as a result. Mumbai Police previously warned its followers of a scam in which con artists demanded money while pretending to be able to help them upgrade to a 5G SIM.

New Delhi is hosting legendary athlete Haile Gebrselassie. The Ethiopian won the 10,000m gold in successive Olympics and eight World Championships in his 25-year storied career. The now-retired great distance runner was named the international event ambassador of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon which was held on October 16.

Haile sat down with WION's Eric Njoka on the sidelines of the event, for an exclusive TV interview where he spoke about a range of topics from both on and off the track.

Scouting for Talent

"I know India is famed for cricket, but with its huge population, I'm certain my role as an ambassador I will be able to spot talent that can be emboldened and nurtured. The geography in some parts of this vast nation, like the high altitudes are a great basket of potential," said Gebreselassie.

Haile added that India can become world-class in athletics when the country finds its first role model. "I always think of the Himalayas, the lifestyle and the climb...just think for a moment the strength of those lungs, the sweat and how fast their hearts pump...believe me, a champion from India will happen, just wait."

From the tracks to the office

At 42, Haile announced his retirement from competitive running in 2015. Gebrselassie became a household name in 1993 when, at the age of 20, he won the first of four consecutive world championship titles in the 10,000 metres.

He has broken 61 Ethiopian national records — ranging from 800 metres to the marathon — and set numerous world records, including the 5,000m, the fastest 10-mile run, and the longest distance competed in one-hour.

Using the winnings from his athletics career, he set out to create his business empire including cinema, real estate, hotels and buying land for a coffee plantation.

"The transition was not easy... my passion for running is still there, I wake up every morning and do my routine exercise...I believe I am young at heart, I just miss competitive sport. I decided to venture into business so that I can uplift my people and my country, and that is my dream to date. I want to do more".

It's a healthy, peaceful rivalry between Kenya and Ethiopia

Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes have always been considered to have a tiff on the track. However, Haile says the differences are healthy for the sport.

"It's funny that we have fights with some of the countries that neighbor Ethiopia, but never with Kenya... Infact we consider Kenyans to be our friends... But, it's a competition after all, so let the rivalry live on because it is healthy and peaceful," Gebrselassie told Eric with a slight giggle.

One of the greatest rivals during Haile's era was Kenyan athlete Paul Tergat, who ironically enjoys more fame in Ethiopia than Gebrselassie.

"Paul is a great man... He is my friend. Every time we meet, we often laugh while looking at the pictures from yesteryears. That's the bond that I call healthy and should continue. We are all humans and this is just a game."

The war in Ukraine has had various ramifications even in sports. The International Olympic Committee's decision to ban Russian and Belarussian athletes and teams from international competitions, has been widely criticised.

The IOC said it made the decision "in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants".

Gebreselassie disagreed with the sporting organisations including FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) for blatantly taking away the rights of athletes and sportspersons.

"I think these organisations are a failure... Just stop it, stop discriminating...It does not matter whether one is Russian or Belarusian...They are there for the sport, don't mix politics with sports, it is dangerous and such a shame".

My Legacy, in my own monument

The Global icon, and a father of four, has run marathons in Tokyo and Dubai, New York and Vienna, competed at the top level for more than two decades, and been one of the sport's great ambassadors.

When asked how he would want to be remembered and his legacy...

Gebrselassie said "Before my time on earth is up, I want to build my own monument in Ethiopia or somewhere in the world... and see it flourish. I want to tell my own story when I'm still alive and touch people's hearts especially the younger generation... and just live Life, that is my driving force".

Haile sat down with WION's Eric Njoka on the sidelines of the event, for an exclusive TV interview where he spoke about a range of topics from both on and off the track. Scouting for Talent "I know India is famed for cricket, but with its huge population, I'm certain my role as an ambassador I will be able to spot talent that can be emboldened and nurtured. The geography in some parts of this vast nation, like the high altitudes are a great basket of potential," said Gebreselassie. Haile added that India can become world-class in athletics when the country finds its first role model. "I always think of the Himalayas, the lifestyle and the climb...just think for a moment the strength of those lungs, the sweat and how fast their hearts pump...believe me, a champion from India will happen, just wait." Gebrselassie became a household name in 1993 when, at the age of 20, he won the first of four consecutive world championship titles in the 10,000 metres. Using the winnings from his athletics career, he set out to create his business empire including cinema, real estate, hotels and buying land for a coffee plantation. "The transition was not easy... my passion for running is still there, I wake up every morning and do my routine exercise...I believe I am young at heart, I just miss competitive sport. I decided to venture into business so that I can uplift my people and my country, and that is my dream to date. I want to do more". Infact we consider Kenyans to be our friends... But, it's a competition after all, so let the rivalry live on because it is healthy and peaceful," Gebrselassie told Eric with a slight giggle. One of the greatest rivals during Haile's era was Kenyan athlete Paul Tergat, who ironically enjoys more fame in Ethiopia than Gebrselassie. "Paul is a great man... He is my friend. The government-appointed committee investigating claims that four cough syrups made in India may have led&nbsp;to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia has found that the clinical data provided by the WHO so far is insufficient to identify the aetiology.

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) V G Somani said that the WHO has been informed about this on Saturday.

On October 13, the WHO's Rutendo Kuwana wrote to the DCGI to inquire about the status of the inquiry into Maiden Pharmaceuticals, the Sonipat-based maker of the four cough syrups.

In response to an email, Dr&nbsp;Somani said on Saturday that the Union ministry of health has established a committee of technical specialists to review and analyse the specifics of the adverse event reports and any relevant information supplied or to be shared by WHO, and to recommend subsequent action.

In its first meeting, the four-member committee, which is led by Dr Y. K. Gupta, Vice Chairperson of the Standing National Committee on Medicines, reviewed the reports and communications that have been so far received from the WHO. The committee also made a number of observations.

Mentioning the observations, Dr Somani said, "The clinical features and the treatment received by the children as shared by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/signs-of-dementia-can-be-detected-at-least-nine-years-prior-to-official-diagnosis-says-study-525111">WHO</a> so far are inadequate to determine the aetiology."

The specifics of the initial illness, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/scientists-have-successfully-implanted-and-integrated-human-brain-cells-into-newborn-rats-525434">signs</a> and symptoms, length of anura in the cases, results of laboratory tests including different markers and parameters, investigations for diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol on critical patient samples, treatment received prior to and following hospitalisation at the tertiary hospital in Gambia, treatment received prior to and following acute kidney injury was suspected, and reasons therefore, names and brands of the drugs,&nbsp;he said.

Dr Somani added that if a verbal autopsy was performed, the WHO might share a complete report.

Dr&nbsp;Somani has also enquired about the quantity of biological samples taken from children who had clinical symptoms similar to acute renal injury as well as the quantity of stool samples taken and analysed.

He also wanted information on the circumstances in which these items were used, as well as information on the product samples that were tested and found to be free of EG and DEG (as well as their composition).&nbsp;

"You are therefore requested to share the report on causal relations along with above details, as observed by the said Technical Committee at the earliest for further examination and follow up action at our level," he wrote.

"The manufacturing site has been inspected, test reports of sampled products from the laboratory are awaited and all the manufacturing activities of the manufacturer in question have been stopped," he said.

The four-person expert panel was set up by the Union health ministry on Wednesday to look into the specifics and adverse event reports regarding the deaths of 66 children in Gambia that may have been connected to four cough syrups produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals' Sonipat facility. These reports were received from the WHO.

After reviewing and analysing the reports of adverse events, the causal relationship, and all relevant information that has already been shared by or will be shared by the World Health Organization, the committee will recommend a further course of action to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

WHO has not yet disclosed the connection between the deaths. To date, the WHO has provided CDSCO with the certificates of analysis, images, and summaries of each product sampled.

According to official sources, the WHO has announced that it is doing more inquiry.

While the Haryana State Drug Controller on October 7 issued Maiden Pharmaceuticals a show cause notice requesting an explanation of the "many contraventions" found during a recent inspection within a week or risk licence suspension or cancellation, the Haryana government on October 11 issued an order to cease all manufacturing operations of the company with immediate effect.

Official sources reported that the WHO has declared that it is doing additional inquiry.

India committee tells WHO: Information on 'killer' cough syrups 'inadequate'

India is all set to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) national coordinators' meeting next week in Delhi. The meet will take place from October 17-18 and will be the first such national coordinator meet under the Indian presidency. New Delhi took over the presidency of the nine-member grouping earlier this year at the Samarkand SCO summit.&nbsp;

National coordinator, basically the role "Sherpas" play in G20 meetings decide on the issues that will be taken up in the grouping. India's national coordinator for SCO is Yojna Patel, an IFS of 2000 batch. The meet takes place in a hybrid mode, with the Pakistani delegation also attending it. During the course of the event, the focus will also be on agenda under the Indian presidency of the grouping.&nbsp;

''Our group has done so many trips. When we were thinking about doing something different, it came to our mind to do Kashmir. Whenever we say Kashmir, we say why and the media portrays&nbsp;it as dangerous, but we wanted to explore it ourselves and honestly we don't regret it at all. The whole group loved it. We loved the landscape, great food and good people. You can't imagine how people helped us. We were given free food and snacks by locals in villages. Our friends from Oman are interested and they will be visiting Kashmir soon as well. Bahrain Bikers was started in 2012 and we have almost 130 members and in this trip we have only 18 of us travelling because everyone couldn't make it. We do a lot of social work as well,'' said Mehdi Hassan, Captain, Bahrain Bikers Group.&nbsp;

The group comprised 20 bikers, including two women, the other bikers were mostly from the Gulf and one was from Germany. The bikers took a ride on the road facing Dal Lake.

''We have come from Bahrain to India. To Leh and Kashmir, I cannot even say anything about Kashmir, it's in our hearts, we have loved Kashmir since our childhood. We never came before but always heard about it. It is for real a paradise on earth. We went to the mountains&nbsp;and saw four seasons in a single day. We recommend and request people from across the world to come to Kashmir. They are lovely people and have amazing food. Kashmir is the best and Kashmir is heaven,'' said Abdul Jasim, a biker from&nbsp;Bahrain.&nbsp;

The bikers expressed joy over the hospitality and welcome they received from people in Srinagar. The female bikers found the place safe and extremely challenging with regard to terrain.&nbsp;

''I have been riding with these bikers for a very long time and it's been amazing. When they said they are going to Kashmir, I said I am signing up as well. It's been fantastic. Even though I am Indian, I will go and promote it. I have seen stunning visuals of the place. I am a part of the group of Biker brothers, and it's been quite safe, and they take care of us very well. Dr Aziz has put together this whole event. He had a crew behind us. We were safe and biker brothers are extremely protective of the lady bikers, so we did not have a problem,'' said Priya Shankar, an Indian biker settled in Bahrain.

Secretary of tourism termed the biking expedition of Bahrain Bikers as a positive sign for Kashmir tourism He said the expedition would open gates for many other such activities as Kashmir has much to offer in adventure tourism.

He also expressed his gratitude to Bahrain Bikers and KCCI for organizing the expedition.

''We have a biker's group from Bahrain, these are international tourists, they have come all the way from the Gulf. There is a biker from Germany, there is a lady biker from Oman and I think it's wonderful that our place is opening up. I think Kashmir has a tremendous potential in biking due to its terrain, climate and places and I am sure it can become the best biking destinations in the world,'' said Hafeez.&nbsp;
