Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee reportedly argued that the ASI was never a party to the suit or noticed by the Varanasi court. It said that despite this, the District Court ordered the ASI to survey the mosque premises.

It also contended that the survey, if done in the way the Hindu women worshippers want, will destroy the entire mosque premises.
Consequently, the Chief Justice directed the ASGI to call an ASI official from Varanasi by 4:30 pm with an affidavit explaining the details and methodology of the proposed survey.
Pursuant to the court's order, an affidavit was filed by the ASI official stating therein that survey work would be carried out without causing any damage to the structure. It added that a team from IIT Kanpur will be called for a radar survey and GPR survey.
India: Home minister Amit Shah urges opposition for debate on horrifying Manipur incident

Indian national capital's Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has announced a plan to install 500 water ATMs across the city to provide drinking water treated using the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process to residents in slums and densely populated areas.

During an inspection of an RO plant in Delhi's Mayapuri, Kejriwal revealed that four water ATMs have already been installed, with 500 more planned for the first phase.

20 litres per person

Each person will reportedly receive a card that allows them to draw 20 litres of purified water per day from these ATMs. The ATMs will be strategically placed near slums and other areas where laying pipelines for water supply is challenging. Water sourced from tube wells will be treated at the RO plants before being distributed through the water ATMs.

Kejriwal emphasised that this initiative aims to ensure that even economically disadvantaged individuals have access to safe drinking water.

Talking to reporters, the chief minister, as per a Hindustan Times report, said: "This card is like a water ATM. Through this, each person will get 20 litres of purified water in areas with inadequate drinking water facilities."

Taiwan's Foxconn has decided to withdraw from a $19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with Vedanta, the latest business challenge for the Indian conglomerate led by Chairman Anil Agarwal.

Here are some details on Vedanta and its recent challenges:

How Vedanta started

Anil Agarwal started his business in Mumbai as a scrap-metal dealer and bought his first company, a cable manufacturing unit, in 1976. He then expanded his empire across India, Zambia, Namibia, Ireland and South Africa and later entered the oil and gas sector.

London-headquartered Vedanta Resources controls the India unit, Vedanta Ltd. Agarwal took Vedanta Resources private in 2018. As of 2022, his net worth was $2 billion, ranking him 97th among India's richest, according to Forbes.

Vedanta diversified in 2017 when it bought a stake in Japan's LCD glass substrate manufacturer AvanStrate. Agarwal's son-in-law Akarsh Hebbar currently heads Vedanta's display and semiconductor business.

Debt woes

Vedanta Resources has been plagued by a rising debt pile. Credit ratings agency Moody's downgraded its rating on the company, while others raised concern about risks of a debt default.

Agarwal said in March there have been no debt defaults by the group. Vedanta's gross debt stood at $6.8 billion as of April end, after the company completed 75 per cent of its debt reduction commitment.

Foxconn JV

Vedanta-Foxconn had sought incentives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and several Indian states for its Foxconn JV to manufacture semiconductors.

Foxconn pulled out of the JV on Monday, less than a year after it was a signed. Concerns about incentive approval delays by India's government aided Foxconn's decision to pull out of the venture, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Reuters reported in June that the JV was proceeding slowly as Vedanta-Foxconn had got on board STMicroelectronics for licensing technology, but India's government wanted the European chipmaker to have a bigger role, like a stake in the partnership.

Other disputes

Vedanta's copper smelter in Tamil Nadu was shut down after 13 people died in 2018 when police fired on environmental protesters calling for the closure of the plant. Vedanta has now offered to sell the plant, having repeatedly denied allegations of the smelter being polluting.

Activists and locals have for years blocked Vedanta's plans to mine bauxite in the green, jungle-clad Niyamgiri hills in Odisha state in eastern India which the tribe people consider sacred.

In Zambia, a long-running dispute over Vedanta's Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is close to being resolved, mines minister Paul Kabuswe said earlier this month. Relations between Zambia and Vedanta broke down several years ago and culminated in the state appointing a liquidator for the KCM assets in May 2019.

Troubles mount for Indian tycoon Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta as Foxconn ditches JV

Police in India’s financial capital Mumbai apprehended four people for allegedly stealing a 6,000 kg iron bridge in a western suburb. The bridge was placed above a drain and was in use until April this year. However, when a permanent bridge was built there, the makeshift bridge was carefully placed in an empty area near Malad Back Road.

The 90-foot-long iron structure was owned by Adani Electricity and was used to place heavy electricity cables, a police official was quoted as saying by India Today.

However, on one fine day in June, the bridge mysteriously disappeared, following which a police complaint was filed by Adani Electricity.

Iron structure valued at INR 200,000

The bridge was last spotted on the site on June 6; however, the FIR was only filed on June 26 following the revelation of the theft. The FIR report mentioned that the value of the stolen bridge is more than INR 200,000 ($2,420).

As per a report by The Times of India, the bridge was erected in June last year and was removed only after a permanent bridge was built by the authorities at the same location.

Four people held by police

As soon as the FIR was filed, authorities initiated an investigation to find the culprits. What made the case trickier was the fact that no CCTV camera was installed in the area where the bridge was placed to be carted away later. When police checked CCTV footage from nearby areas, they spotted a big truck going towards the Malad Back Road on June 11.

Further investigation led the police to track down the truck on the basis of its registration number and revealed that it was carrying gas-cutter machines, which were most likely used to dismantle the iron bridge.
