India's Supreme Court, on Tuesday (Sep 17), issued a strong warning to state authorities regarding the use of "bulldozer justice," emphasising that even a single case of unlawful demolition goes against the principles of the Indian Constitution.

The court has ordered a halt to all such demolitions nationwide until October 1, when the matter will be reviewed again. It clarified that no property should be demolished without its approval, except in cases where the structures are illegal and located on public roads or footpaths.

A bench of Justices B R&nbsp;Gavai and K V&nbsp;Viswanathan was addressing petitions that claimed properties belonging to individuals accused of crimes were being torn down in several states.

Condemning the practice of "bulldozer justice," which some states have been accused of, the apex&nbsp;court remarked, "Heavens won't fall if we ask you to hold your hands till the next hearing."

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that a "narrative" was being built around the demolitions, to which the&nbsp;court responded, "Rest assured that outside noise is not influencing us."

Previously, the top court had pointed out, "In a country where actions of the state are governed by the rule of law, the transgression by a family member cannot invite action against other members of the family or their legally-constructed residence. Alleged involvement in crime is no ground for the demolition of a property."

It further stated, "Moreover, the alleged crime has to be proved through due legal process in a court of law. The court cannot be oblivious to such demolition threats inconceivable in a nation where law is supreme. Otherwise, such actions may be seen as running a bulldozer over the laws of the land."

On September 2, the Supreme Court had indicated that it would issue nationwide guidelines to regulate demolitions across the country.

"We are on broad guidelines so that there is no bulldozer tomorrow and that it is documented and checked so that neither side points any lacunae...Why cannot some guidelines be passed so that it is followed? There can be notice, time to file a reply, time to pursue other legal remedies and then the demolition...we want to resolve this on a pan-India basis," said Justices Gavai and Viswanathan.

"A video went viral on social media showing a tricolour with a crescent moon and star symbol at its centre in place of the Ashoka Chakra, hoisted at a vehicle during Milad-un-Nabi procession," Saran police said.&nbsp;

"The flag was immediately seized...All other accused will soon be arrested," the statement added.

Interestingly, the police issued a warning that anyone sharing the said video on social media would face strict action.&nbsp;

In a unique initiative, India hosted the 2nd International Buddhist Media Conclave 2024 last week, inviting media organizations from Asia and beyond. The conclave was hosted by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) and was supported by India's Ministry of Culture. The idea behind the conference was to give a platform to international media that are focused on teaching of Buddha, that too in India, a country from where Buddhism originated.

IBC DG Abhijit Halder pointed out that the event witnessed an enthusiastic response from the media and that the IBC will organise its next conclave on a larger scale. He said, "Buddha always spoke about the human mind, clarity of mind. In this age of communication, software, social media, and the internet, the deluge of information we face clouds our mind and blurs our vision about the world."

The event brought together media organizations from Japan, South Korea, Myanmar, Russia, and other countries which have been focusing on spreading the ideas of Buddhism. Participants held discussions on how the media can contribute to spreading Buddha's teachings and emphasised on Buddhism's core values that is the promotion of non-violence, tolerance, and inner peace.

IBC Chief Halder, pointed out, "It was high time the teachings of Buddha in the area of conflict avoidance and sustainable development were imbibed by the world". The event saw participation of Chairman VIF Gurumurthy, Secretary General, IBC, Ven Jangchuk Choeden and Dr Arvind Gupta, Director VIF who were joined by three time Grammy awardee&nbsp;Ricky Kej. Baichung Bhutia, former captain of the Indian Football Team graced the event as the Guest of Honour.

The Indian government has started the exercise to conduct the long-delayed population census and an announcement regarding the matter is expected soon, according to a report in TOI. 

The centre is also believed to be keeping an 'open mind' to the idea of adding a caste column to the census, owing to the demand of the opposition parties.&nbsp;

The once-in-a-decade census was to be completed in 2021 but got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time the census data was published was in 2011.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Work on holding the census is already on and a decision in this regard is likely soon," a senior government functionary was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;

"This (caste count) is yet to be decided," the official added.&nbsp;

The last time a census featured a caste column was way back in 1931. However, the government stopped the exercise after independence.&nbsp;

The critics have argued that the delay in the census&nbsp;impacts the quality of many other statistical surveys, including economic data, inflation, and job estimates.

As of Monday (Sep 16),&nbsp;hundreds of Samsung India workers at the firm's Sriperumbudur factory are understood to be continuing their protest, demanding higher pay, balanced work hours, and formal recognition of their Left-affiliated Workers Union. Since last Monday, staff who are involved in the assembly of home appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners have been away from work, affecting the output of the factory near Chennai city in Southern India.

According to those who were leading the protest, the workers and the Trade Union leaders were to march towards the Kanchipuram District Collector's Office by 10 am, Monday. However, the Police are said to have foiled their plans by placing a few Trade Union members under preventive detention and picking up the others who are arriving at the pre-designated protest spot. "CITU District President Muthukumar and a few others were picked up from the CITU office. They are being illegally detained, and we don't have any information on their whereabouts. Cops have also confiscated Muthukumar's phone. I am on my way to the protest spot to assess the unfolding situation," Soundararajan, CITU, State President, shared his allegations with WION.&nbsp;

BRICS-10 has been carrying forward the task of BRICS-5 by attempting to strengthen the framework of its strategic partnership under the three pillars of cooperation – politics and security, economy and finance, cultural and people-to-people exchanges. In the June 10 meeting in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, the foreign ministers of BRICS-10 reaffirmed their “commitment to the BRICS spirit, featuring mutual respect and understanding, equality, solidarity, openness, inclusiveness, and consensus.” The latest meeting of the NSAs continued this approach, focusing on deepening cooperation in the domain of national security.

Reports indicate that NSA Doval, in his formal intervention, touched on three significant themes. First, he spoke about modern security challenges, including ICT-related issues as well as terrorism, while emphasising the imperative need to tackle them through greater cooperation within the grouping. On September 12, NSAs were received by Russian President Vladimir Putin, except for the NSA of Saudi Arabia. (Ambivalence still prevails over Saudi participation in BRICS deliberations.) The Russian president expressed his satisfaction over the NSAs’ lively and productive discussions “on the most relevant aspects of the global situation and global and regional stability concerns.” He termed the NSAs’ meeting “a crucial step” in preparing for the summit and BRICS Plus/Outreach that are scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, on October 22-24. Putin indicated that “the swift and seamless integration” of the new member countries into all BRICS mechanisms and devising the framework for a new category of “partner states” figure among the Russian presidency’s priorities. “We will also consider several potential candidates for this status,” he added.

<h2>On the sidelines</h2>

What happened outside the formal programme of NSAs’ meeting was of considerable significance. Doval was given an opportunity to pay an exclusive bilateral call on President Putin. Its significance was projected through a short video covering the first few minutes of this meeting that underlined the special relationship between India and Russia. The Indian official briefed the Russian leader, on the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, about the latter’s recent discussions with the President of Ukraine in Kyiv. This was a further amplification of India’s continuing helpful role in creating the basis for a peaceful dialogue about the Ukraine conflict. It also reflected India’s strong desire to keep stressing to both parties that a solution needs to be found through dialogue and diplomacy, and not by continuing the war. Some commentators speculated that the NSA carried ‘India’s peace plan’ to Moscow.

It was, however, another matter that, as armed hostilities continued, Ukraine was reportedly seeking NATO approval to strike targets deep into Russia through long-range Western weapons. This produced a sharp warning from President Putin. He indicated that Russia would be “at war” with the US and its allies if they lifted restrictions on Ukraine in this regard. As a result, Russia would take “appropriate measures,” he said. Clearly, the issues of war and peace in Ukraine are in evolution. Indian diplomacy is not only monitoring the relevant developments closely but is also engaged in moulding them to the extent it can.

Another important meeting Doval had was with Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) political bureau and director of the office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, on September 12. Following a review of recent developments relating to “the remaining issues” concerning the Line of Actual Control (LAC), they agreed to “redouble their efforts” to secure complete disengagement in the remaining areas. This came just as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated, while on a visit to Germany, that 75 per cent of the “disengagement problems” with China have been sorted out, but he added that the “bigger issue” has been the increasing militarisation of the border. The next day, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stated at the media briefing that the two militaries realised disengagement in four areas, including the Galwan Valley, and added that the situation along the border was stable.

<h2>Immediate prospects</h2>

With PM Modi set to travel to Moscow again to participate in the BRICS summit in October and the likelihood of his meetings with President Putin and President Xi Jinping, the chances of further consolidation and strengthening of this grouping have improved.

Moreover, depending on what transpires behind the scenes in the next five weeks, there appears a serious possibility of a breakthrough in the India-China negotiations on the border issues as well. Watch this space.

On the other hand, VIP families were allowed to take pictures without anyone rushing them to leave. Another viral video showed&nbsp;a huge crowd of devotees rushing inside the pandal when the entry was allowed only for a few minutes.

Harsh Goenka, a billionaire and chairman of RPG Group, recently shared a video on X&nbsp;which showed how the devotees were treated as they rushed&nbsp;for just a small glance of Lalbaugcha Raja, highlighting the "unequal treatment" at the pandal. He even stated how common people have to face such struggles and wait in extra-long queues just to get the blessings.

Indian billionaire shares video of 'unequal treatment' at Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja

A major row has erupted in the Indian western state of Gujarat, the stronghold of the national ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after it was revealed that school students have been enrolled as party members in a membership campaign.

The membership scandal has emerged in the Surendranagar district, and the state’s education department has now launched a probe into the matter. Earlier, the authorities issued a notice to the school management.

<h2>Worrying reports</h2>

Earlier this week, some media reports claimed, citing messages from the WhatsApp group of KU M R Gardi Vidyalaya school, that students from class 9 and above were made members of the BJP and given cards under a membership campaign.

The students were enrolled as BJP members through the phones of their parents. There are allegations that the students were then handed national flags and were photographed before being registered as party members.

Mukesh Nimavat, the school’s principal, defended himself saying the exercise was done to download a government educational app on the phones.

<h2>BJP smells conspiracy</h2>

Meanwhile, the BJP said it was an action to defame the party, citing rules that bar registration of members below the age of 18.

Surendranagar BJP district president Hitendrasinh Chauhan said, “Legal action will be taken against everyone behind this. I am investigating who is involved… As per primary investigation that we have conducted, it was revealed that no party member, taluka president, village sarpanch, or worker had gone to the school for the membership drive.”

A Kolkata court on Friday (Aug 13) denied the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the permission to conduct a narco test on the prime accused of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. The CBI wanted to extract more information from Sanjay Roy by placing him in a semi-conscious state, but the court refused to grant approval.

Earlier on Thursday, the CBI gathered dental impressions and saliva samples from Roy to compare with the bite marks found on the victim’s dead body. The nurse was finishing off her work at the hospital when the accused came and tried to allegedly rape her. The nurse managed to flee from there after cutting the attacker and called the police from a nearby field.&nbsp;

These protests began on Monday (Sep 9) after the Samsung India management allegedly failed to recognise the Left-affiliated Samsung India Workers Union. Muthukumar is not a Samsung employee, he represents the protesting workers, who do not wish to reveal their identities, fearing backlash from their employer. When requested, Samsung India did not issue any fresh clarification on the deadlock. In an earlier statement, a Samsung India spokesperson had said, "We actively engage with our workers to address any grievances they may have and comply with all laws and regulations. We will also ensure that there is no disruption to our consumers." Their demands were for higher wages and benefits. Owing to the absence of hundreds of workers, the rollout of thousands of units of varied home appliances has been affected at Samsung's facility. The final four months of the calendar year are crucial for the Indian consumer market, as the festive season sees a sharp spike in sales of consumer electronics and other goods. The protests at the leading consumer electronics assembly facility occurred at a time when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his industries team were in the US to attract investments to the state. Over the last ten days, the CM has been announcing that MoUs worth millions of dollars have been signed with prospective investors from across sectors, including electronics and electronics component manufacturing. The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has maintained that it is working towards tripling its state economy to $1 trillion by 2023.

Lazaro, who is on an India visit, has said that her country is working for full e-visa services for Indians so that tourism increases, with an air services agreement in the works as well. Lazaro is foreign affairs undersecretary (vice minister) at the Philippines Foreign Ministry and was in Delhi for the 14th Philippines-India Political Consultation Talks and the fifth Philippines-India Strategic Dialogue. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Lazaro said ties between the two countries were on an "upward trajectory" and welcomed the comments by EAM Dr S Jaishankar supporting Philippines sovereignty amid Chinese aggressive actions. She highlighted: "It is very important to us, and we thank the Indian government for the kind of support that has given us, by stating and by supporting the arbitral award of 2016." She also spoke about the current situation in South China Sea, even as fresh visuals have come of Chinese vessels using aggressive actions on Philippines vessels. Asked if India has been briefed, she said, "We've been talking to your people, your embassy in Manila, they're aware of certain moves that we're making, because you're our allies, you are our friends, like minded partners of the Philippines." Full interview: Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India-Philippines ties? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: The relations between Philippines and India are on an upward trajectory. Our presence here, for the 14th political consultations and strategic dialogue is already a manifestation of the strong political, economic, as well as strong socio-cultural relations with India. I have a big delegation, including from defence, and other agencies. Sidhant Sibal: This is the 75th year of the diplomatic relationship. Anything big we are expecting in terms of new initiatives. How do you plan to celebrate the anniversary year? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: That is something that I believe, with our ambassador here in Delhi, and also India's new ambassador in Manila, and this will be, more or less, their mandate. It will leave a mark in a number of aspects of our relations. But indeed it is very important because India is probably important as well as long time-established diplomatic relations. Sidhant Sibal: Are you holding the political consultations here, the strategic dialogue as well? What will be the key focus? What will be the agenda like, in terms of talks between the two sides, and issues that will be discussed? We know this is a relationship which is increasingly becoming very substantive Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Consultations are about the whole gamut of political, economic, social, cultural, people-to-people particularly, which is probably the driving force in our relations, people-to-people relations. So of course, the strategic dialogue, there's a lot of defence discussions, as well as, of course, the regional, international issues that are happening around the world. Sidhant Sibal: Ma'am, we have seen high-level engagement between the two sides. We saw the Indian External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, travelling to the Philippines, and he made comments supportive of the Philippines and India has backed the arbitration award of 2016 as well. How do you see those comments by the Indian side? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, that was a very welcoming comment from the Indian external affairs minister. It is very important to us, and we thank the Indian government for the kind of support that has given us, by stating and by supporting the arbitral award, this is very important to us, because the anchor of our foreign policy with regards to the South China Sea, is the 1982 UNCLOS-United Nations convention with the law and the 2016 Arbitral award. So the statement that has been given by the Indian government is very important. Sidhant Sibal: You specifically take care of ASEAN as well. So as a country coordinator what elements you're looking forward to in terms of how India can engage with the ASEAN grouping? The Philippines is the country coordinator of India-ASEAN ties. Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, we've just started the coordinatorship this July, and we're now preparing for the summit that will take place from 8 to 10 October. President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr will be present, and of course, I'm sure the Indian Prime Minister will also be there. But I think what is important here is, functional cooperation and a lot of cooperation in political and economic aspects. If my recollection is correct, there will be two outcome documents that will come out, and we're now working and negotiating documents that will play a very important role. One is particular to Myanmar, and essentially, how is the policy of your country over that? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, there are various points there. One is, we support the five point consensus. It has been our policy, that we are of the view that Myanmar, all the stakeholders involved in this situation, should get to talk to each other. We also believe that we have to support the humanitarian aspect. I think the Myanmar people are having their difficulties and challenges, and therefore the humanitarian aspect is very important to us. We would like to play a more important role, and we are just looking into this matter as time progresses. Sidhant Sibal: India gave the BrahMos missiles to your country. How do you see this? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: For very specific matters, I leave it to our Department of National Defense. But I think the acquisition of BrahMos is a very important aspect of the National Defense position. And I think this will be part of our deterrent capabilities in our present situation, and this will be an important aspect of our defence and security issue. Sidhant Sibal: There are more plans in terms of defence engagement. There are reports saying that India, the Philippines plan to get a lot of defense assets, like helicopters from India. There is a lot of cooperation when it comes to the coast guards of the two countries. So what do you have to say about that? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, I leave this thing. I'm not very particular, not very knowledgeable of these acquisitions. During the strategic dialogue, we have somebody from our national defence and maybe in a better position to say. Sidhant Sibal: One of the big worries emerging from your region is the Chinese aggressive actions, particularly with the Filipino vessels. We have seen those visuals of the Chinese vessels ramming into your vessels. What do you have to say about that, as to what is the current situation on the ground, in fact, on the sea right now? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, thank you for that question. It was just last weekend that there were really a number of incidents which happened. It is the position of the Philippines that despite these incidents, of course, our operational agencies are very much aware of this. However, we do not discount, and we will continue to also, go to that aspect of a diplomatic resolution. Area is really an exclusive economic zone, therefore we have every right to be there, but there still can be a political discussion on this matter. Sidhant Sibal: But ma'am, do you see the situation getting more worrisome, because almost for months now, we have seen the same things happening there at that location? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: I want to bring you back to the Second Thomas Shoal. At the Second Thomas Shoal, we had some kind of conditional arrangement with China on how to deal with that Shoal. This is where this ship, Sierra Madre is present, due to some diplomatic discussions, we were able to have some conditional arrangement. Now, there is this another issue now on Sabina Shoal and again, despite those incidents that happened, we still think that we cannot discount some possible diplomatic discussions. Sidhant Sibal: That's a very optimistic view when it comes to China, because India is also facing aggressive actions by the Chinese. But essentially, when it comes to the situation there, have you spoken about the situation with your partners, with your allies? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Definitely, we have our only treaty ally, the United States, and we are like minded countries who have been supporting us on this matter. They've been giving us very important statements of support. I'm sure you've been reading about it, and we do not want this issue to escalate. And therefore I may sound optimistic, but that's optimism, something that one should, one should also look at. But in this particular matter, we cannot. It's very important since any accidental situation might happen. It is our view that a diplomatic discussion is still something that can be dealt with. Sidhant Sibal: Have you discussed the issue with India? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, I think to a certain extent, we've been talking to your people, your embassy in Manila, they're aware of certain moves that we're making, because you're our allies, you are our friends, like-minded partners of the Philippines. Lazaro: Well, that's a very good question, and we have just been talking to my colleagues here, particularly the ambassador. We're going to fully launch e-Visa. I think it's very important that we also capture a good number of Indian tourists who visit the Philippines and vice versa. So that is the position that we have taken. Perhaps there will be other innovations that we can come out with. Sidhant Sibal: But no direct flight between India and the Philippines? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Yeah, it's really unfortunate that, because connectivity is very important, and therefore, I think we have some air services agreement coming up. It's part of all these political talks.I think it's a matter of time, but we will have some direct flights, Manila-Delhi. What are these visas for if the connectivity is poor, and I think it is up to us to strengthen our connectivity. Sidhant Sibal: Space cooperation? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Well, the Philippine Space Agency, a very, very new agency of the government that was established during the time of President Marcos has already started, having discussions, or even a possible MOU with your space agency, and they're looking at your at the Indian Space Agency as one of those agencies that can really assist us in our issues, with the things that can be done through space. So there's a lot of activities that they're coming up with, and I think this is the new development, all these things that are happening in space, a lot of direction and impact, data, agriculture, climate change and so forth and so on. Sidhant Sibal: Your final words as to, where do you see this relationship going forward? Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro: Positive and upward trajectory, I can only say that the relations between our two countries will still move upward, and with a possible visit and exchange of visits of high government officials, that it will take its greater heights. And I think it's about 75 years, which is really a monumental number of years of ties. we're looking forward to such an expansion in strengthening ties.

Philippines plans full e-Visa service for Indians, space MoU with ISRO

At the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meet in Saudi capital Riyadh on Monday (Sep 9), India's External Affairs Minister Dr EAM Jaishankar emphasised on the growing partnership between the two sides.&nbsp;

Pointing to "3Ps – People, Prosperity and Progress" of ties, Jaishankar said: "People-to-people ties are the bedrock of our relationship. Close to nine million Indians work and live amongst you, acting as a living bridge between us. Their contributions to your economic progress are widely recognised."&nbsp;

He thanked the GCC countries, which comprise of six Arab state viz., Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman&nbsp;for taking care of the large Indian diaspora in their countries.

India’s economic linkages with the GCC have increased steadily, especially due to growth in oil imports. Pointing that GCC is a "cornerstone of global energy supply", EAM called for "deepening" collaboration as that will help in "stabilising markets, driving innovation and enhancing energy security." India, which is the world's fifth largest economy is a major importer of energy.

The meeting adopted a Joint Action Plan 2024-2028 for undertaking various joint activities in diverse areas including health, trade, security, agriculture and food security, transportation, energy, culture, amongst others.

During the meet, the situation in Gaza also came up. Terming the current situation in Gaza as a "concern", the top Indian diplomat said that "we are deeply pained by the continuing death of innocent civilians. Any response must take into account the principles of humanitarian law". He also extended India's support for a ceasefire.

What makes Monday's meet in Riyadh significant is, so far such meetings used to happen in the form of troika -"EAM and the GCC" troika -- that is GCC-SG, foreign minister of the country holding the current GCC presidency, and foreign minister of the country that will hold next GCC presidency, and any other foreign minister(s)/senior officials from the GCC countries.

At the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meet in Saudi capital Riyadh on Monday (Sep 9), India's External Affairs Minister Dr EAM Jaishankar emphasised on the growing partnership between the two sides. Pointing to "3Ps – People, Prosperity and Progress" of ties, Jaishankar said: "People-to-people ties are the bedrock of our relationship. Close to nine million Indians work and live amongst you, acting as a living bridge between us. Their contributions to your economic progress are widely recognised." He thanked the GCC countries, which comprise of six Arab state viz., Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman for taking care of the large Indian diaspora in their countries. India’s economic linkages with the GCC have increased steadily, especially due to growth in oil imports. Pointing that GCC is a "cornerstone of global energy supply", EAM called for "deepening" collaboration as that will help in "stabilising markets, driving innovation and enhancing energy security." India, which is the world's fifth largest economy is a major importer of energy. The meeting adopted a Joint Action Plan 2024-2028 for undertaking various joint activities in diverse areas including health, trade, security, agriculture and food security, transportation, energy, culture, amongst others. Terming the current situation in Gaza as a "concern", the top Indian diplomat said that "we are deeply pained by the continuing death of innocent civilians. On the sidelines of the meeting, the Indian external affairs minister also met the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, the Foreign minister of Saudi Arabia Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the Foreign minister of Oman Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood, the Foreign Minister of Kuwait, Abdullah Ali Al Yahya, Foreign Minister of Bahrain Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. The ministry added that contact tracing and monitoring were actively in place to ensure that the situation was contained.&nbsp;

"There is no indication of any widespread risk to the public at this time," the ministry declared.&nbsp;

India confirms first Mpox case in traveller who returned from 'country experiencing virus transmission'

The report by PTI citing an&nbsp;anonymous source said&nbsp;that the homeless man got stuck under the car’s wheels, but Dubey mercilessly kept driving.

Dubey's car allegedly dragged&nbsp;Lekhraj for around 10 metres, after which the accused&nbsp;took off. According to the police, Dubey returned the car to his friend.&nbsp;

The accused is currently in&nbsp;police custody under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police also asserted that the car involved in the accident has been impounded, and an&nbsp;investigation is underway.

Bangladesh will take 'necessary steps' to secure the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India to try her on charges of mass killings, the newly appointed&nbsp;chief prosecutor of the country's&nbsp;International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Taijul, said on Sunday (Sep 8).&nbsp;

Hasina has sought refuge in the northern Indian city of Ghaziabad ever since fleeing Bangladesh as the demonstrators&nbsp;took over her official residence in the wake of the students' protest last month.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Necessary steps will be taken to bring former prime minister Hasina back under the extradition treaty with India to try her on charges of mass killings during the student-led protests in July and August,”&nbsp;Taijul was quoted as saying by The Daily Star newspaper.

"We will file an application with the International Crimes Tribunal, when it resumes functions, to issue arrest warrants against all the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the cases filed for mass killing and crimes against humanity," he added.&nbsp;

Last month,&nbsp;Bangladesh's ICT launched an investigation against Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place between July and August during the peak of the students' protest against the 'unjust' quota system.&nbsp;

Taijul added that information, documents and evidence against the accused persons will be collected from across the country and compiled, examined and placed properly before the tribunal.&nbsp;

<h2>Yunus' hint</h2>

Taijul's statement comes a couple of days after&nbsp;Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, hinted at the extradition. Yunus said Hasina "should keep quiet"&nbsp;and asked New Delhi to move beyond the “narrative” that every political party other than Hasina’s Awami League is “Islamist”.

“We want to extradite killers and bring back the money embezzled by corrupt individuals, politicians and bureaucrats during the autocratic regime," said Yunus.&nbsp;

“If India wants to keep her until the time Bangladesh wants her back, the condition would be that she has to keep quiet.&nbsp;Sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. No one likes it. It’s not good for us or for India," he added.&nbsp;

"I resigned so that I did not have to see the procession of dead bodies. They wanted to come to power over the dead bodies of students, but I did not allow it. I resigned from premiership," Hasina said.&nbsp;

"I could have remained in power if I had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America to hold sway over the Bay of Bengal. I beseech to the people of my land, please do not be manipulated by radicals," she added.&nbsp;

Washington and Dhaka had been at loggerheads for some time when Hasina was in power. The friction was evident when Hasina won a fourth straight term in January but the US State Department did not accept the results saying the polls were not free and fair.

A drunk truck driver in the Indian city of Pune, Maharashtra&nbsp;tried to damage the hotel building after being denied food on Friday (Sep 6)&nbsp;night.

The video filmed some men&nbsp;witnessing the truck driver causing a scene&nbsp;near Hotel Gokul Regency in Hingangaon shows that&nbsp;he was repeatedly ramming his truck into the hotel building. While doing so, he also damaged a&nbsp;car parked outside the hotel.

According to a report by NDTV, the driver was travelling&nbsp;from Solapur to Pune and made a halt at Hotel Gokul&nbsp;Regency in anticipation of free food.

However, as the driver&nbsp;went inside, he was reportedly stopped from entering the hotel premises. The media report citing the manager said the driver was not in an appropriate condition to enter the family restaurant, dressed in indecent attire and intoxicated to the level where he wasn’t even able to walk properly.

Some men tried to stop the truck driver’s absurd behaviour by throwing stones at the truck, urging him to stop his rowdiness.

The truck driver was eventually forced to stop&nbsp;after the wheels of the truck ceased to move.

<h2>'Truck driver was&nbsp;abusive and extremely drunk'</h2>

Prince Desai, owner of Gokul Regency told WION,&nbsp;“I was out of town when this incident took place. My manager informed me that the truck driver was abusive and extremely drunk. He could have done anything to any other person; he was that drunk.”

“As I run a family restaurant, this is a place where children and families dine. How could we let that inappropriate person enter, which would have made the place unsafe for my customers. I want to state that the hotel is nowhere at fault for not letting the person in, despite what other media platforms are trying to prove. The driver was highly intoxicated, abusive, and wasn’t even able to walk properly. We did what was needed to ensure safety.” Desai added.&nbsp;

Upon being notified of the incident, Desai immediately called 100. A police complaint has been registered, and they are still awaiting further legal action.

However, as the driver went inside, he was reportedly stopped from entering the hotel premises. The media report citing the manager said the driver was not in an appropriate condition to enter the family restaurant, dressed in indecent attire and intoxicated to the level where he wasn’t even able to walk properly. Some men tried to stop the truck driver’s absurd behaviour by throwing stones at the truck, urging him to stop his rowdiness. My manager informed me that the truck driver was abusive and extremely drunk. How could we let that inappropriate person enter, which would have made the place unsafe for my customers. I want to state that the hotel is nowhere at fault for not letting the person in, despite what other media platforms are trying to prove. The driver was highly intoxicated, abusive, and wasn’t even able to walk properly. We did what was needed to ensure safety.” Desai added. Upon being notified of the incident, Desai immediately called 100. A police complaint has been registered, and they are still awaiting further legal action.

Roy had initially confessed to the crime on August 10 following his arrest but the civic volunteer later took a U-turn and claimed he was being framed.

Sanjay Roy is believed to have told the CBI that he was not involved in the incident.

"I didn't commit the murder. I ran from the seminar hall after seeing the body," he told CBI during the test.

It must be noted that the results of the polygraph tests are not admissible as evidence in the courts.

Sanjay Roy's lawyer Kavita Sarkar said Roy&nbsp;was asked during the test what did he after murdering the junior doctor. Roy then reportedly told the CBI that the question was invalid as he didn’t commit the murder.

FT claimed that Russia’s industry and trade ministry had formulated a plan in October 2022 to invest over $1 billion to secure supplies of sensitive materials from non-Western channels. A health official from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) drowned and died in the raging Ganga River after a diver coldly demanded money before attempting a rescue. The official, identified as Aditya Vardhan Singh, had gone to the river on August 31 with his friend Pradeep Tiwari. Aditya then slipped and fell into the river near the Nana Mau Ghat in the Kanpur district.

His friend hurriedly arranged for a local diver to rescue the health official but shockingly, he asked for an upfront payment of INR 10,000 (US$119). Even though Tiwari instantly transferred the amount, the official couldn’t be saved as it was too late by then.

Following the incident, police launched a massive search operation for the deputy director of the Uttar Pradesh Health Department. Police said the dead body of the official is yet to be recovered.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), on Thursday (Sep 5)&nbsp;said it had taken&nbsp;into consideration the viral video allegedly showing&nbsp;an act of financial mishandling by a ticket operator working at the Indian capital's&nbsp;Nirman Vihar Metro station.

DMRC said&nbsp;that after being notified of the misconduct, they investigated the incident&nbsp;to identify the employee involved. The ticket operator, as per the DMRC,&nbsp;was a contractual operator employed by Nuvision Commercial &amp;&nbsp;Escort Services (NCES).

“A video is in circulation regarding an act of financial mishandling by a Ticket Office Machine (TOM) Operator at the Nirman Vihar Metro station. Upon receiving the complaint, DMRC took immediate cognizance of the matter, and after a thorough investigation, the concerned employee was identified as a contractual operator employed by an agency named M/s Nuvision Commercial &amp; Escort Services (NCES),” said the DMRC in a post on X.&nbsp;

To avoid such incidents in the future, certain measures have been taken by Delhi Metro officials, which include allotting personnel at the station to observe and monitor as well as&nbsp;conduct unplanned inspections.

DMRC also suggests that passengers check whether the exact amount is returned to them before exiting the counter.

“A penalty under the ‘Service Deficiency Memo’ clause of the contract was imposed on the contractor. Subsequently, the operator was also removed from service with immediate effect. DMRC personnel posted at stations have been instructed to closely monitor and conduct surprise checks at the TOM counters to ensure such acts are not repeated. The passengers are also requested to check the exact amount returned to them before leaving the counters,” DMRC wrote.

“Delhi Metro is committed to providing the best services to the passengers,” it&nbsp;added.

The West Bengal chapter of India’s national ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday (Sep 5) alleged that the ex-principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the dead body of a junior doctor was found, ordered an urgent renovation near the crime site. Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Mazumdar also shared a letter allegedly signed by Sandip Ghosh authorising the renovation work.

Mazumdar wrote on X, “The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the victim's death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it."

The alleged letter was dispatched to the executive engineers of several departments of the Kolkata PWD (Public Works Department), asking for the repair of the attached toilets.

"I would like to inform you that there are deficiencies in on-duty Doctors' Rooms and separate attached toilets in various departments of RGKMC&amp;H, Kolkata. You are hereby requested to do the needful immediately as per the demand of the Residents' Doctors of RGKMC&amp;H,” the purported letter read.

An elderly Indian-origin man has been killed after being assaulted while walking his dog in a park in an eastern England town near the city of Leicester on Sunday (Sep 1).&nbsp;

The victim&nbsp;has been identified as Bhim Kohli (80) as police arrested five people - a boy and a girl aged 14 and one boy and two girls aged 12 – on suspicion of murder. However, as of the last update, four had been released without any action.&nbsp;

The incident took place around 6:30 pm local time near&nbsp;Franklin Park's entrance. The autopsy report revealed that Kohli had died due to a neck injury as further test results were awaited.&nbsp;

The police have appealed to the community members to come out and provide any information about the assault that took place on Kohli and what prompted it.&nbsp;

“Were you in the area of Franklin Park or Bramble Way around 6.30 pm on Sunday night? Did you see the attack itself? From the description given, did you see the victim before the incident or possibly a group of young people leaving the area after?," the police said in an appeal.&nbsp;

"A scene preservation will remain in place at the park while our investigation progresses. Local officers are also in the area carrying out reassurance patrols and can speak to anyone in the local community who has concerns."

According to reports, Kohli was only 30 seconds away from reaching home when he was clobbered by the alleged minors. The family, which has lived in the area for 40 years, said Kohli had always been active and took routine walks in the park.&nbsp;
