India may receive below-average rainfall in the next two weeks with a large deficit in the soybean and cotton growing central and western regions, a weather department official said on Thursday, raising concerns over the output of summer-sown crops.

Monsoon rains are crucial for farm output and economic growth, as about 55% of India's arable land is rain-fed, and agriculture accounts for about 15% of a $2.5-trillion economy that is the third biggest in Asia.

"Weather model is showing a deficiency in rainfall over central and western India in next two weeks," said an official with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), who declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak with media.

"The northeast and foothills of Himalaya could get good rainfall," he said.

India received 28% more rainfall than the 50-year average in the week to July 10, data from the IMD showed, after getting poor rainfall for five straight weeks.

This week's heavier monsoon cut the rainfall deficit since the start of the season on June 1 to 14% from 28% last week.

But the deficit could widen again in the next fortnight, said the official, adding "After two weeks, there are indications of good rainfall. The monsoon is seen reviving in the last week of July."

India is still recovering from a drought last year that ravaged crops, killed livestock, emptied reservoirs and drained water supplies to city dwellers and some industries.

Some municipalities like Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad were forced to cut water supplies to ensure stocks lasted until monsoon rains replenished reservoirs.

This year rains arrived in the southern state of Kerala a week late on June 8. The developing Cyclone Vayu in the Arabian Sea drew moisture from the monsoon and weakened its progress.

It advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during the next 24 hours.

Kutch Collector Remya Mohan said five teams of the NDRF were stationed in the district to help in rescue and relief work.

We have asked the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard to remain ready to help the state in any untoward situation," he said, adding that the government is monitoring the situation along with the MeT department and ISRO.

Solapur recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius, Jalgaon 43, Aurangabad 40.7, Parbhani 43.6, Nanded 42.5, Akola 44.2, Amravati 44.8, Buldhana 44.2, Chandrapur 42.6, Nagpur 43.8, Yavatmal 42.5 and Gondia 40.4.

Light rains were witnessed in some parts of the state from Saturday evening, including Dharamshala (15 mm), capital Shimla (5 mm), Bhuntar (0.4 mm) and Sundernagar (0.1 mm), the Met said.

"Due to easterly winds at lower levels over northern parts of the country, the severity of the heatwave is very likely to decrease over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and Uttar Pradesh from today (Sunday) onwards," it said.

Severe heat wave conditions are likely to persist over Madhya Pradesh and west Rajasthan on Monday, the IMD said with a red-coded colour warning for these two states.

The IMD has four colour codes to indicate the severe weather systems - red for extremely severe weather conditions, followed by amber, yellow and then green which denotes normalcy.

It also has an amber-coded warning for east Rajasthan and Vidarbha in Maharashtra and a yellow-colour coded warning for Marathwada, Surat and Kutch, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi for Monday.

Heatwave across country to continue for next two days, subside gradually: IMD

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday warned of a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/delhi-sizzles-at-45-degrees-as-heatwave-continues-its-spell-223345">severe heat wave in the national capital</a> and its adjoining states for the next few days.

"We are expecting this to continue for the next two days. In Delhi, we are not expecting rain. As per our forecast, the maximum temperature here can be as high as 46-degrees. It will gradually come down," he said.

Mahapatra also predicted that around June 6, monsoon will be hitting Kerala. The southwest monsoon is expected to hit Odisha coast within two weeks after its onset in Kerala.

"Expecting monsoon to arrive near Kerala around June 6. At present, monsoon has covered some extreme southern parts of the Arabian Sea and parts of southwest-southeast-east central Bay of Bengal, the Andaman sea, and Andaman Nicobar islands. The IMD and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/monsoon-likely-to-hit-kerala-on-june-4-three-days-after-normal-onset-date-skymet-218751">private weather agency Skymet</a> were unanimous on the prediction of the late arrival of monsoon this year. The Skymet had said on Tuesday that the monsoon would hit the Kerala coast on June 4, with an error margin of two days.

If the monsoon arrives late, it will be third such instance since 2014 when it arrived on June 5, followed by June 6 in 2015 and June 8 in 2016.

Large areas in the seaside pilgrim town of Puri and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state.

Several trees were uprooted and thatched structures destroyed at some places including Bhubaneswar.

"The cyclone has entered the Odisha coast at Puri around 8 am and it will take around three hours for the entire landfall process to be completed," Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, H R Biswas said.

The cyclonic system, whose eye is around 28 km, is moving at around 30 kmph, Biswas said, adding the process of landfall is expected to be complete around 11am.

Puri and neighbouring areas are experiencing wind with a speed of 175 kilometres per hour which may go up to 200 kmph.

Over 1 million people have been evacuated from the east coast covering Odisha and West Bengal in the wake of the cyclone. The NDRF team along with Naval coast guard have been on alert to ensure relief supplies reach the affected area.
