The launch that took place on Thursday, Pyongyang's second ICBM test this year, used a Hwasong-17 missile, according to the official Korean Central News Agency, which added that it was fired in reaction to "frantic" joint military exercises between the US and South Korea.

Images released in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim watching the black-and-white Hwasong-17, known to experts as a "monster missile," take off into the sky.&nbsp;

Several other pictures showed him watching the launch with his daughter—whom state media never named but who South Korean intelligence recognised as his second child Ju Ae.

Previously, South Korea claimed that the missile was launched on a lofted trajectory, or upward rather than outward, as is generally done to avoid overflying other nations.

North Korea declared itself to be an "irreversible" nuclear state last year, and Kim recently called for an "exponential" rise in the development of weapons, including tactical nukes.

Kim, who supervised the launch on Thursday, is quoted as saying that North Korea would&nbsp;"react to nuclear weapons with nukes" and called for "irreversibly bolstering up the nuclear war deterrent", according to KCNA.

According to KCNA, he also emphasised the nation's "rapid response posture... to cope with any armed conflict and war".

<h2>The ICBM danger</h2>

The Hwasong-17 ICBM may theoretically reach the United States' continental territory, and with this most recent launch, North Korea is attempting to highlight the sophistication of its arsenal, experts said.

Cheong Seong-chang, a senior scholar at the Sejong Institute, told AFP that Pyongyang appeared to be attempting to prove that it could reach whatever target the government desired with its ICBM through the use of photographs of the Earth.

He predicted that the next phase by North Korea will attempt to launch the missile "at a normal angle," demonstrating that it can survive reentry into the atmosphere.

The launch on Thursday came as Tokyo and Seoul pushed to repair their long-frozen relations to offset an increasingly aggressive North Korea.

“Anyone other than these two, if they express regret, will be taken back,” he said.

The AIADMK has already made it clear that even those siding with Dhinakaran post his fallout with chief minister Palaniswami last year, were welcome to return to the AIADMK, but the leader was not welcome.

"There will be an operational test launch of an Air Force Global Strike command unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile early tomorrow morning, September 7, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder told Reuters.&nbsp;

Ryder said that the two tests are happening around the same time because of the postponement and emphasised that the schedule was decided quite some time back. While the information was sent to Russia, no official mention of China was made during the official briefing or any other quotes. &nbsp;

As per the CNN report, out of the three missiles that were allegedly fired, one flew an unusual trajectory. The officials noted that the missile's flight path had a "double arc" with the missile ascending and then descending twice, the media outlet stated.&nbsp;

According to two of the officials, as quoted by CNN, such an unusual trajectory suggests that North Korea might have been testing the ability to fire a missile and then make it re-enter the Earth's atmosphere to reach a target.&nbsp;

A joint statement from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Friday noted: "The United States, the ROK, and Japan express deep concern about the May 25 DPRK launches of an intercontinental ballistic missile and shorter-range ballistic missiles."&nbsp;

"The DPRK has significantly increased the pace and scale of its ballistic missile launches since September 2021. Each of these launches violated multiple UNSC resolutions and posed a grave threat to the region and the international community," it added.&nbsp;

The United States imposed new sanctions Thursday on entities and people in Russia and North Korea after Pyongyang's latest ICBM missile test.

The targeted persons and organizations are accused of "transferring sensitive items to North Korea's missile program," according to a State Department statement.

"These measures are part of our ongoing efforts to impede the DPRK's ability to advance its missile program and they highlight the negative role Russia plays on the world stage as a proliferator to programs of concern," the statement said, using the official acronym for North Korea.

The new sanctions were quickly derided by Moscow's ambassador in Washington Anatoly Antonov, who said: "serial sanctions will not achieve their goals."

Thursday's launch was the first time Pyongyang had fired the country's most powerful missiles at full range since 2017, and it appears to have travelled higher and further than any previous intercontinental ballistic missile tested by the nuclear-armed nation.

Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the test-firing of a "new type" of ICBM to boost his country's nuclear deterrent against the US "imperialists," North Korea's state media reported early Friday.

In response, the State Department said Washington has sanctioned the Russian entities called Ardis Group, PFK Profpodshipnik and Russian national Igor Aleksandrovich Michurin.

It also sanctioned North Korean citizen Ri Sung Chol and a North Korean entity called Second Academy of Natural Science Foreign Affairs Bureau.

The statement did not detail the specific allegations against these people and entities.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong late on Thursday to reaffirm Washington's alliance with Seoul.

The two top diplomats reiterated that the launch violated multiple UN Security Council resolutions, and "demonstrates the threat the DPRK's unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs pose to the DPRK's neighbors and the broader international community," State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a readout of the call.&nbsp;

For its part, the Russian embassy accused the United States of seeking to punish officials in Moscow because they hold a view that "does not correspond to the views of Washington."

"It is obvious that the next 'package' of anti-Russian sanctions is aimed at destroying the economy and undermining the domestic political situation in our country," Antonov posted on the embassy's Facebook page.

Last week, the US Treasury announced sanctions against two Russian individuals and three entities over their support for North Korea's weapons program.
