Firms in China brought in half of the equity capital raised globally this year so far, setting a record that highlights the economy's earlier revival from the COVID-19 pandemic, plus the degree to which soured US relations are turning Chinese firms homeward. China-based companies sold shares worth $32.1 billion in January-June including multi-billion-dollar secondary listings in Hong Kong, equivalent to 49.8% of worldwide offerings, showed data from Refinitiv. The total for US firms was $15.8 billion. "With massive liquidity injections by various governments (supporting virus-hit economies), I'm not surprised by the size of Chinese capital raised this year - and the trend may continue," Li He, capital markets partner at Davis Polk, said of China firms taking advantage of their early lockdown emergence. Also read: After coronavirus outbreak, Chinese companies eye European businesses China was hit by the novel coronavirus in December and was the first country to impose virus-prevention lockdown measures on individual movement and business activity in late January. Markets began their return to normality in April. Chinese fundraising has been helped by the popularity of Shanghai's year-old growth-focused STAR Market, as well as well-received initial public offerings (IPOs) in Hong Kong and the massive secondary listings - including the $3.9 billion raised by e-tailer JD.com Inc this month and $3.1 billion by games developer NetEase Inc. "For Chinese companies, both the Hong Kong and US markets are getting back to normal," said Houston Huang, head of global investment banking for China at JPMorgan. "Market activity (deal volume) is much better than anybody expected at the beginning of the year." Also read - Explained: Why Chinese firms are exploring investment opportunities in India Escalating Sino-US geopolitical tension over issues such as trade is widely expected to prompt more US-listed Chinese firms to conduct secondary listings closer to home where they can raise funds in markets absent of anti-Chinese sentiment. Companies considering a secondary Hong Kong listing include Yum China Holdings Inc and ZTO Express (Cayman) Inc, said two people with direct knowledge of the matter. Neither Yum nor ZTO responded to requests for comment outside of regular business hours. Secondary deals are also increasing investor interest in Hong Kong, a market with a reputation for hosting stodgy financial and property groups rather than growth-focused tech companies. Li Hang, CLSA head of Greater China equity capital markets, said the JD.com sale, on which his bank worked, was able to win orders not just locally but also from Southeast Asia and Europe. "If a company is looking at a secondary listing in Hong Kong, they need to be looking at gathering investors' interest from not only from Asia, but also Europe and the US," Li said. Auditing Also of concern for Chinese firms are US steps aimed at improving the transparency of financial disclosure but which clash with the Chinese government's reluctance to give foreign entities access to onshore records. In May, just weeks after former market darling Luckin Coffee Inc said its sales had been falsified, the US Senate passed a bill that could force Chinese firms to delist if they do not allow the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to access their audited accounts for three consecutive years. Will Cai, head of US law firm Cooley's capital markets practice in Asia, said the bill spurred two of his eight Chinese clients with IPO plans to choose Hong Kong over New York. For some Chinese companies, prestige continues to propel them toward the US listing in spite of political wrangling and negative sentiment toward Chinese firms following fallout from Luckin Coffee. Chinese groups still managed to raise $1.7 billion through New York IPOs during 2020's coronavirus-hit first half, versus $3.42 billion in January-June last year. The figure includes the $510 million raised by Kingsoft Cloud Holdings Ltd in early May in the first major U.S. IPO since the coronavirus outbreak - and the first since Luckin's disclosure. Its stock has since risen nearly 60%. "We were under lot of pressure because if this one had failed, basically the U.S. market could have potentially closed the door to all Chinese companies," said Huang at JPMorgan, a lead underwriter for the deal.

China announced details of a long-anticipated pilot scheme on Monday linking up investment of wealth management products in Hong Kong and Macau with neighbouring cities, to further integrate the semi-autonomous economies with the mainland.

"Wealth Management Connect" will allow residents of the two offshore centres and those in nine cities on the mainland - which together form the "Greater Bay Area" (GBA) - to buy such products in each other's markets.

More than 53 arrested during silent march in Hong Kong

At least 53 people were arrested on Sunday by the Hong Kong police after scuffles broke out during a peaceful protest against planned national security legislation to be implemented by the mainland Chinese government.

Armed riot police were present as a crowd of several hundred staged what was intended to be a “silent protest” against the planned law.

Hong Kong Police said on Facebook that 53 people had been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly, adding that earlier some protesters tried to blockade roads in the area.

The proposed national security law has raised concerns among Hong Kong democracy activists and some foreign governments that Beijing is further eroding the extensive autonomy promised when Britain handed the territory back to China in 1997.

Sunday’s event came a day after Hong Kong police refused permission for an annual march usually held on July 1 to mark the 1997 handover, citing a ban on large gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

China has said the new security law would target only a small group of troublemakers as it tackles separatism, subversion, terrorism and foreign interference in Hong Kong.

Hundreds of Hong Kongers marched silently through the city’s streets on Sunday in protest against the looming national security legislation to be implemented by the mainland Chinese government.

Riot police armed with shields were present as the crowd moved from Jordan to Mong Kok in the Kowloon district, as part of a “silent protest”, in which they marched with the usual chanting or slogan shouting mainly absent.

Scuffles broke out in Mong Kok during the event, prompting police to use pepper spray to subdue parts of the crowd, according to a Reuters witness.

The laws are expected to be passed before the end of June but a draft has yet to be made public.

“I am here to oppose the national security laws,” said Esther, 25, who was on the streets of Jordan on Sunday.

“It’s not the last battle, there is a long term resistance (to the laws),” she said, declining to give her surname.

The event came a day after Hong Kong police refused permission for an annual march usually held on July 1 to mark the handover of the city from Britain to Chinese authorities 23 years ago.

Police said in a statement to the organiser that a march would be in violation of Hong Kong’s current ban of gatherings of more than 50 people that was put in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

A survey conducted by the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute for Reuters showed the national security legislation is opposed by a majority of people in the financial centre.

The survey also showed support for protests dropping to 51% from 58% in June compared to a previous poll conducted for Reuters in March. Opposition to them rose to 34% from 28%.

Hong Kong police ban protest against national security law

Hong Kong police on Saturday banned a major demonstration against China's planned national security law for the city which critics fear would smother the financial hub's treasured freedoms, organisers said.

Hong Kong police on Saturday banned a major demonstration against China's planned national security law for the city which critics fear would smother the financial hub's treasured freedoms, organisers said. The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) said the force had rejected its applications for rallies on July 1, the 23rd anniversary of the former British colony's handover to China. Police cited a risk of violence and said the gatherings and march would "pose a severe threat to public health" due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pro-democracy group CHRF, which was responsible for some of last year's unprecedented million-people demonstrations, said they would appeal the decision. The semi-autonomous city has been convulsed by a year of huge and often violent rallies that began with an eventually aborted criminal extradition bill but morphed into a popular call for democracy and police accountability. In May, Beijing announced a draft national security law -- which will bypass Hong Kong's legislature -- to tackle "terrorism" and "separatism" in a restless city it now regards as a direct national security threat. The law would enforce punishment for subversion and other offences in Hong Kong, but critics see it as potential knock-out blow for freedoms and autonomy enjoyed by the city. US President Donald Trump's administration said Friday it was restricting visas for a number of Chinese officials for infringing on the autonomy of Hong Kong, as Congress seeks tougher sanctions. The Chinese embassy in Washington said "no one has any legal grounds or right to make irresponsible comments on Hong Kong affairs". EU also warned China it would face "very negative consequences" if it pressed ahead with the new law. The law is expected to be voted on during a National People's Congress Standing Committee meeting to be held from Sunday to Tuesday.

The measure also includes secondary sanctions on banks that do business with anyone found to be backing any crackdown on the territory’s autonomy, potentially cutting them off from American counterparts and limiting access to US dollar transactions.

Taiwan recently announced plans to ease border restrictions for people coming from Hong Kong on humanitarian grounds. On Wednesday, June 24, the government announced plans to set-up a dedicated office wing for people seeking to escape Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous city sandwiched in China.

Recently, China announced plans to impose national security laws in the former British colony, which would essentially prohibit any criticism of the mainland Chinese administration. Additionally, with the support of pro-China Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, China wants to weed out “terrorists” from the city.

July 1 - a historic date

It’s imperative to note that Hong Kong is the only territory in China which grants democratic freedoms to its people.

The new office will open beginning July 1. What’s interesting is the historic date chosen for its reopening, for Hong Kong was returned to China on July 1 in 1997, under its “one country, two systems” deal with the British.

Taiwan to let Hong Kongers in on 'humanitarian' grounds beginning July 1 - the same day HK was returned to China

The leader of Hong Kong’s Catholics has said the city churches’ relations with the Vatican should not be deemed as “collusion with foreign forces” under the impending national security law.

Cardinal John Tong Hon, apostolic administrator of Hong Kong, also said he appreciated the need for a national security legislation but hoped governments in the city and in mainland China could do more to ease people’s concerns.

Tong hoped the operations of the church and the religious freedoms Hong Kong enjoys would remain intact after the implementation of the law, which targets secession, subversion of state power, terrorist activities, and collusion with foreign or external forces.

The cardinal’s comments were reported in the latest issue of the church’s Chinese-language weekly posted on its website on Wednesday. The remarks are the clearest official stance offered so far by the church over the controversial legislation.

The cardinal’s comments were reported in the latest issue of the church’s Chinese-language weekly posted on its website on Wednesday. The remarks are the clearest official stance offered so far by the church over the controversial legislation. Hong Kong: Catholic leader hopes ties with the Vatican will not fall foul of legislation

Senior Hong Kong lawyers expressed alarm on Sunday at plans for the city’s leader to select judges for national security cases, calling it the most serious challenge to the territory’s vaunted judicial independence since the 1997 handover to Chinese rule.

The move was among details of a new national security law for Hong Kong released by the official Xinhua news agency on Saturday - legislation that is expected to be passed soon by the standing committee of China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress.

As well as heading a new local national security council supervised by Beijing officials, the city’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, will also have the power to appoint judges to hear cases under the law.

The Hong Kong Bar Association’s chairman, Philip Dykes, described as “extraordinary” any move to have Lam allocate judges, saying it cut to the core of the independence of the judiciary that is protected by the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution.

“This is the biggest shift since the handover,” Dykes told Reuters.

“You can’t be slightly independent any more than you can be slightly pregnant. You’re either independent or you’re not.”

With Lam heading the council, “you’re picking a judge for a contest in which you have an interest”.

In response to Reuters questions addressed to Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma on the new legislation, the judiciary said in an email that it “would not comment”.

Hong Kong and Chinese officials say the law must be imposed urgently on the former British colony after sometimes-violent protests over the past year exposed the need to tackle separatism, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

The law is stoking fears among foreign governments as well as Hong Kong’s democracy activists, who were already concerned that Beijing is eroding extensive autonomy promised when Britain handed it back under a “one country, two systems” formula.

The city’s common law-based legal system is widely seen as the bedrock of that formula, underpinning its status as a global financial hub.

Speaking privately, other senior lawyers expressed deep concern, saying it appeared to confirm their fears that Beijing wanted to curb the “separation of powers” that made Hong Kong judges an important check on the government. Some admit to being increasingly nervous about speaking out due to Beijing’s growing squeeze.

A Reuters Special Report in April revealed that some of the city’s most senior judges privately feared the city’s rule of law was under assault from Beijing.

While pro-Beijing figures have demanded special courts and called for foreign judges - a long-standing tradition in Hong Kong - to be barred from national security cases, the new plan had not surfaced locally.

“It is an act to import political elements into the judicial system, which is supposed to be impartial,” said Angeline Chan, a solicitor and convenor of the Progressive Lawyers Group.

The allocation and rostering of judges is currently handled by senior judges based on legal experience.

“It raises a lot of questions ... God knows how they will be selected,” said Dykes, urging the full proposed law to be released as soon as possible.

Lam said in a statement late on Saturday that the central government had repeatedly emphasised the law “will not affect the capitalist system in Hong Kong and (its) legal system”.

Hong Kong lawyers alarmed at plans for judges in national security trials

Carrie Lam is called the person who sold Hong Kong to China. She's a leader who calls her own people the enemies. WION's Executive Editor Palki Sharma Upadhyay gets you the story of Hong Kong's Chief executive.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that the way his country regards Hong Kong depends on the way China treats it.

Pompeo told the online Copenhagen Democracy Summit elections due to take place in Hong Kong in September would “tell us everything that we need to know about the Chinese Communist Party’s intentions with respect to freedom in Hong Kong.”

He also said the United States was working its way through a decision-making process over who would be held accountable over curbs to Hong Kong’s freedoms.

Last month, following Beijing’s move to impose a national security law on Hong Kong that critics said would undermine the city’s semi-autonomous status, US President Donald Trump removed Hong Kong’s special trading status.

While Pompeo refused to say what steps the White House might take – “I don’t want to foreclose anything the president might choose to do,” he said – he did stress that the US would monitor the Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong, now scheduled for September.

“I think that will tell us everything we need to know about the Chinese Communist Party’s intentions with respect to freedom in Hong Kong,” he said.

At the forum, which was hosted by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former secretary general of Nato, Pompeo also discussed his meeting on Wednesday in Hawaii with China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi.

US treatment of Hong Kong depends on how Beijing treats it, says Pompeo

China has unveiled details of its new national security law for Hong Kong on Saturday.

The details of the law were unveiled following a three-day meeting of the top decision-making body of China's parliament.

The much-anticipated legislation, which has provoked deep concerns in Washington and Europe, includes a national security office for Hong Kong to collect intelligence and handle crimes against national security, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

National security activities would protect human rights and freedom of speech and assembly, it added, without providing details.

China says the draft law is aimed at tackling separatist activity, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, but critics fear it will crush wide-ranging freedoms that are seen as key to Hong Kong's status as a global financial centre.

The exact time frame for enacting the law was unclear, although political analysts expect it will take effect ahead of key Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong on September 6.

China's move to impose the law directly on Hong Kong, bypassing the city's legislature, comes after a year of sometimes violent anti-government and anti-Beijing protests that mainland and local authorities blame "foreign forces" for fomenting.

Some political commentators say the law is aimed at sealing Hong Kong's "second return" to the motherland after Britain's 1997 handover failed to bring residents of the restive city to heel.

At the time of the handover, China promised to allow Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy for 50 years under what is known as the "one country two systems" formula of governance, although democracy activists say Beijing has increasingly tightened its grip over the city.

Officials in Beijing and Hong Kong have been at pains to reassure investors that the law will not erode the city's high degree of autonomy, insisting it will only target a minority of "troublemakers" who pose a threat to national security.

Hong Kong has said the law would not erode investor confidence and people who abide by it have no reason to worry.

Despite such assurances, the law has alarmed business groups, diplomats and rights organisations, further strained ties between the United States and China, and prompted the G7 foreign ministers to urge Beijing not to go through with it.

Beijing proposed the new legislation last month, drawing a swift rebuke from Britain and the United States.

DETAILS

According to details released by the official Xinhua news agency, Hong Kong will establish a committee to safeguard the legislation, headed by the city's leader Carrie Lam and supervised by the central government.

New police and prosecution units will be set up to investigate and enforce the law.

Lam will also have the power to appoint judges to hear cases related to national security, an unprecedented move likely to unnerve some investors, diplomats and business leaders in Hong Kong.

Currently senior judges allocate judicial rosters up through Hong Kong`s independent judicial system.

Officials in Beijing and Hong Kong have sought to reassure investors that the law will not erode the city`s autonomy, insisting it will target only a minority of "troublemakers" who pose a threat to national security.

Xinhua said human rights and freedom of speech and assembly would be protected, echoing previous comments by authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong.

Additionally, any Hong Kong residents running for election or working for the government will have to swear allegiance to the city and its mini-constitution, the Basic Law.

Asia-focused banking giant HSBC's vocal support for China's controversial Hong Kong security law has not been well received in Britain, the former ruler of the city.

The London-headquartered lender last week backed Beijing's contentious legal proposal for Hong Kong, which critics fear will be used to stamp out dissent in the city.

HSBC's announcement angered business and political circles in Britain, which returned the former colony to Chinese rule in 1997.

The bank's decision flew in the face of convention because most multinationals attempt to steer clear of political intervention.

However, HSBC's top Asia executive, Peter Wong, has signed a petition in support of the law.

In addition, London-listed bank Standard Chartered -- which also focuses primarily on Asia -- sided with Beijing over the law.

'Cosy up'

"The UK-listed banks have taken China's side as it is clear they want to cosy up to the second largest economy in the world," said CMC Markets analyst David Madden.

HSBC insisted the Chinese measures would help "stabilise" Hong Kong and "revitalise" its economy.

HSBC's move came after Hong Kong's pro-Beijing former leader Leung Chun-ying criticised the bank for not publicly supporting the law -- while profiting from its Chinese business interests.

Asia remains critical for HSBC because the bank generates the majority of its profits in the region.

The lender's chief executive Noel Quinn announced plans this year to axe 35,000 jobs as HSBC strengthens its focus on Asia and trims fat from less profitable activities in Europe and the United States.

'Synonymous with Hong Kong'

HSBC -- or the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation -- is closely linked to the history of the former British colony.

The bank was founded in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865 -- but has been based in Britain since 1993.

"HSBC is synonymous with Hong Kong – the website and bank cards feature the skyline, the HSBC building in Hong Kong is an iconic one, and the firm employs around 30,000 people in Hong Kong," said Emma Wall, head of investment analysis at broker Hargreaves Lansdown.

"To those outside of the region it may therefore come as a surprise that HSBC, and other firms such as Standard Chartered, have put up no resistance to the recent divisive bill.

"But ultimately, any corporate decision will be made with future revenues in mind -- and for HSBC half of their revenues come from Asia," she added.

But the bank's decision has been met with anger from prominent politicians in Britain.

Former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith said HSBC's support for China's national security law was a "grave error".

Lisa Nandy and Anneliese Dodds, leading lawmakers in the main opposition Labour party, have meanwhile written to both banks to express concern.

Last week's decision also risks HSBC's reputation on the global stage.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticised the bank for backing the law, calling it a "cautionary tale" and warning of businesses' overreliance on Beijing.

"That show of fealty seems to have earned HSBC little respect in Beijing, which continues to use the bank's business in China as political leverage against London," Pompeo said in a statement.

However, HSBC's top Asia executive, Peter Wong, has signed a petition in support of the law. In addition, London-listed bank Standard Chartered -- which also focuses primarily on Asia -- sided with Beijing over the law. 'Cosy up' "The UK-listed banks have taken China's side as it is clear they want to cosy up to the second largest economy in the world," said CMC Markets analyst David Madden. HSBC insisted the Chinese measures would help "stabilise" Hong Kong and "revitalise" its economy. HSBC slammed in UK for backing China's Hong Kong law

June 9 marked the 1st anniversary of the millions of people march in Hong Kong. Despite the restrictions on assembly hundreds of people took to the streets protesting against China's attempts to take away the city's autonomy. Watch report.

WION Dispatch: One year on, protestors reignite in Hong Kong

Exactly one year ago, millions marched on the streets of Hong Kong to oppose an Extradition Bill. 365 days on what has changed in Hong Kong?

Gravitas: One year of Hong Kong uprising: A special report

On the first anniversary of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, the police arrested 53 people after a fresh wave of protests against China.

Activists in the city took to the streets again, and blocked roads in the centre of the city to cut off contact. Reuters reported that the police retaliated by firing pepper spray.

The protests which began last year after China’s plans to introduce a now panned extradition bill, became violent as there were excesses from both sides. The bill would have allowed prisoners to be transferred to mainland China indefinitely, where no freedom or democracy is available.

Beijing is now moving forward with the national security bill which calls to put an end to “troublemakers” in the city. Its provisions include terrorism, sedition, and foreign interference. The bill, once enforced, will essentially ban criticism of the Chinese government in the semi-autonomous city.

Out of the 53 arrests, 36 were men and 17 were women, who were arrested for unlawful assembly and their participation in the protests.

China had capitalised on the curfew rules in place in view of the COVID-19 crisis, but people defied the ban on assembly of more than eight people to continue protesting.

Reuters reported that more protests are planned in the city in the coming days. It must feel good to see an adversary embroiled in internal unrest. But — the echoes of these protesters in America — are also making China nervous.

Beijing has released a video targeting policing in the United States. It's a poor attempt at teaching America about policing because the world has seen China's policing in Hong Kong. If China is allowed to lecture, it can only lecture on persecution.

Right now, China is using the riots in America to push its propaganda. This video shows visuals of riots and looting. It highlights police brutality in America with statistics and it slams Trump's response.

China says the western press won't criticize the American police but will find faults in the Hong Kong police. Here's the thing, the western press has double standards. That's right, but china's argument is still flawed.

Here is the difference between Hong Kong and Minneapolis:

George Floyd's killing at the hands of a white police officer was not a government order. Suppression of dissent in Hong Kong — is Chinese govt order.

The Cultural Revolution under Mao Zedong wiped out the Chinese civilisation. The superiority of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics means Sini-cisation. Imposing the Chinese culture on all.

In 2018 — Xi Jinping issued a directive aimed at sinicisation of Chinese Muslims and that included the Hui Muslims.

Since then — the government has even termed the Hui culture as Arab. They call it a foreign culture, and not at all Chinese.

Then China attacked religious places, destroyed mosques and rebuilt some to make them appear more Chinese.

China banned all Arabic signs in the region during the Cultural Revolution. In 1975 — the people's liberation army massacred over 1,500 Hui people. At least 300 of them were children more than 4,000 homes were destroyed.

Today — Xi Jinping is touring the Hui regions calling for ethnic unity. Xi is forgetful many Hui Muslims have been sent to reeducation camps.

They've been tortured much like the Uighur Muslims of Xinjiang. More than one million of them are in detention. Many are being tried on trumped-up charges in sham trials. Convicted without evidence or due process. Indoctrinated, Forced to watch videos that praise president Xi Jinping. Now — the same man is presenting himself as the messiah of minorities. Preaching others about policing and inclusion doesn't cut it.

China revels in the anti-racism riots in America

Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Hong Kong on Tuesday (June 9) to mark a year of sustained pro-democracy rallies as fears over looming national security legislation have reignited unrest in the global financial hub.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam warned on Tuesday the city could not afford further "chaos" as it marked the first anniversary of the start of rolling mass pro-democracy protests.

More than a million people flooded the streets a year ago to protest a bill by Lam's government that would have allowed people to be extradited to mainland China, where courts are controlled by the Communist Party, for trial.

Lam later withdrew the bill but the legislation triggerd widespread concern that the central government in Beijing was stifling freedoms in the global financial hub, sparking months of anti-government protests.

"All of us can see the difficulty we have been through in the past year, and due to such serious situations we have more problems to deal with," Lam said during her weekly media conference, which coincided with the anniversary.

"We need to learn from mistakes, I wish all lawmakers can learn from mistakes - that Hong Kong cannot bear such chaos."

After a relative lull in protests during the coronavirus pandemic, demonstrators have returned to the streets in recent weeks and more rallies are expected.

Activists have called for people to gather at lunchtime and later on Thursday to mark the anniversary of last year's mass rally. They have also announced plans to hold a referendum on Sunday about whether to launch a city-wide strike against national security laws proposed last month.
