All this is linked to Quixotic Covid policies of the Hong Kong government which is forcing visitors from going to the city. Visitors to the city had to undergo 21 days of isolation in a hotel room initially. That period was reduced over the last two years, but even now the arrivals have to stay in a hotel for three days and at home for four days.

Despite pleas from sports organisers, business groups and even pro-Beijing lawmakers to ease quarantine measures, Hong Kong government is dilly-dallying about it.

At a time when the rest of the world is opening up its borders and easing restrictions like mandatory face masks, Hong Kong seems to be stuck in the past. Its policies are fashioned more to reflect the severe quarantine rules on mainland China rather than science or available data.&nbsp;

Many health experts now skirt around key issues and there is no political opposition to raise concerns as almost all leaders are in jail. Most of the independent media also has shut down.

Critics of Beijing say the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has only one tool – hammer – to deal with every trouble and so they see every problem as a nail. CCP certainly has been using the same tool of lockdowns to deal with Covid-19 for almost three years though the virus has mutated into several forms and the disease patterns have changed.

A host of trade unions and activist forums have ceased to exist as they fear falling foul of the new security law. Even buskers singing songs that were popular during the 2019 protests face the ire of police and people coming out to place flowers to mark dates of key political protests are prevented from doing so.&nbsp;

It was against this backdrop that thousands lined up outside the British consulate to pay respects when Queen Elizabeth died.&nbsp;

“When mourning the queen, we are mourning the lost Hong Kong,” said Cathleen Cheung, 30, a social worker who was among those who queued up to pay respect.

The fall of Hong Kong, from being a global financial hub to an also-ran Chinese city, is relentless. The former British colony was in a tight race with Singapore for the tag as the global city of Asia for decades. Despite the squeaky clean image of Singapore, many professionals chose Hong Kong as their base as free-wheeling atmosphere of the city proved to be a magnet.

But now that race has virtually ended. Singapore is surging ahead as it attracts finance conferences and big-ticket events like concert of Guns N' Roses while getting ready to welcome back the F1 race. It has removed almost every Covid restriction and the Changi Airport is buzzing with activity. The Singapore airport was recently billed as the top in Asia for passenger volume while Hong Kong didn’t even make it to the top ten.

“With Hong Kong increasingly linked to mainland China both economically and policy-wise, Singapore is able to further differentiate itself as a controller of its own destiny and as a hub for major international events,” said Curtis Chin, a former US ambassador to the Asian Development Bank.

Local media now speculates that Hong Kong could do away with compulsory hotel stay soon and ask visitors to stay home for a week with restrictions on visiting crowded public places. Whether it will save the city is a moot point as many other countries in the region have completely done away with Covid restrictions and competing to lure back the visitors.

While continuing to adhere to a loose interpretation of China's zero-Covid strategy, which suppresses outbreaks via travel restrictions and quarantines, Hong Kong is attempting to revive its pandemic-devastated sports sector.&nbsp;

According to the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association, the 2023 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships are the newest international sporting event to leave the Chinese metropolis.&nbsp;

"Hong Kong's current quarantine and isolation arrangements for visitors are still more stringent than that of other countries," the group wrote on Facebook.

The International Dragon Boat Federation has stated that the event that was originally set for next August will now take place in Pattaya, Thailand.&nbsp;

The announcement comes a day after separate cancellation announcements from the Oxfam Trailwalker and the Hong Kong Marathon.&nbsp;

With only two months until the race, the marathon organisers claimed there was not enough time for preparations because they had not yet secured government sanction.&nbsp;

No foreign runners competed in the marathon last year, which was conducted in October after a months-long delay; in contrast, the government cancelled the marathon in 2020 with two weeks' notice.

The Oxfam Trailwalker organisers also stated that their event could not go on as planned, despite their commitment to cap registration at 1,600 people.&nbsp;

Organizers posted on Facebook that "the government believes that there are still a significant number of persons involved in the event."&nbsp;

The government requested that foreign players be kept in an isolation bubble, which led to the cancellation of Hong Kong's main badminton competition earlier this month.&nbsp;

The administration of those events will follow a "closed loop" Beijing Olympics-style model, in which foreign athletes are segregated from the general public and confined to hotels and sporting venues.&nbsp;

The normally boisterous Rugby Sevens attendees will be permitted to drink but not to eat in the stands, according to Hong Kong's sports commissioner.&nbsp;

The annual cross-harbour swimming event was given the go-ahead by Hong Kong officials on Friday, but only 1,500 people will be able to take part.

A Chinese couple has been arrested and indicted in the United States for allegedly plotting to set up an autonomous mini-state in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, said US prosecutors.&nbsp;

DOJ press release on Friday noted that Cary Yan, 50, and Gina Zhou, 34, are accused of money laundering and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.&nbsp;

It is said that Cary and Gina tried to persuade US lawmakers to set up a Semi-Autonomous Region (SAR) in the Marshall Islands. US prosecutors have alleged that the pair had posed as officers from a non-governmental organisation in New York City.&nbsp;

The US Justice Department indictment sheet reads, "The defendants offered and provided a series of bribes and other incentives to obtain the support of legislators for the bill."&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Chinese couple has&nbsp;pleaded not guilty to the charges.&nbsp;

Starting in 2016, the Chinese couple met several officials in New York to set up a semi-autonomous region, similar to Hong Kong. They bid to create a SAR on the Rongelap Atoll, an area that was abandoned after testing of the US hydrogen bomb in the 1950s.&nbsp;

The indictment said: "Yan planned to use the Rasar to, among other things, attract investors and customers to businesses that he would operate in the Rasar, in whole or in part through the NGO."&nbsp;

The limitations become stricter. For instance, gatherings of more than two people were prohibited, but group shots were permitted as long as all participants were disguised. A person who violates the rules will face a sentence in jail of a maximum of six&nbsp;months.

The authorities' most controversial decision to separate Covid-infected people from their families, including children and elderly people, deteriorated the situation further. Later, the city’s hospital authorities announced they were abandoning the programme after separating nearly 2,000 children.

Although Carrie Lam announced that some travel and domestic restrictions will be lifted, her administration made it plain that Hong Kong will stick close to China’s "Covid-zero" strategy.

"We have lots of support back in Hong Kong. We have lots of messages from family and friends," said Pakistan-born Nizakat.

"It's a big learning curve for us to play against India and Pakistan. We take something out of these two games and hopefully the players learn a lot."

The team's media manager Smita Chhetri told AFP that three players, Babar Hayat, Ehsan Khan and Yasim Murtaza, have recently become fathers but have only seen their newborns on video calls. "A few of our players are doing food delivery service part time," Chhetri said. "And few of them are teachers as well as handling family businesses like Kinchit Shah."

Fast bowler Ayush Shukla, a 19-year-old university student, celebrated the wicket of India skipper Rohit Sharma with a scream and fist bumps when he got the opener caught at mid-on for 21.

The experienced Hayat top-scored with 41, Kinchit made 30, Zeeshan Ali was 26 not out and Manchester-born Scott McKechnie smacked an unbeaten 16 off eight balls as they all impressed in a rare chance to play at the highest level.

"These are the opportunities for individuals as well," said Nizakat, adding his team were making the most of their time at the Asia Cup by picking the brains of world-class Pakistani cricketers.

"We have players that can play franchise cricket and this is the time they can show how good they are."

Several cities in southern China raised their cyclone warning signals on Wednesday, bracing for Tropical Storm Ma-on, which is expected to make landfall along the coast of Guangdong province on Thursday.

At 12:40 PM (0440 GMT), the Hong Kong Observatory issued a strong wind advisory, with speeds up to 62 kph expected. The storm, about 440 km southeast of Hong Kong, will lash the city with heavy rains later Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

Hong Kong issued its third-highest typhoon warning on Wednesday evening as the storm trundled closer to the city, with authorities warning people to stay indoors.

Very hot weather has hung over the city for the past couple of days and temperatures reached as high as 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with Ma-on, which translates to saddle, expected to be closest to the city on Thursday morning.

Hong Kong's financial markets will not open on Thursday if the typhoon signal remains at 8 or higher at 9 AM (0100 GMT). 
 
The Maritime Bureau of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge issued a typhoon-level II emergency response, closing it to shipping.

The ninth cyclone of the season, Ma-on is expected to generate waves of five to eight metres across the northern part of the South China Sea, according to local media. Storm surges are expected to affect several cities in Guangdong province, including Shenzhen, Chaozhou, Huizhou and Yangjiang.

The Shenzhen Meteorological Station upgraded the city's blue typhoon warning signal to yellow, and Zhongshan issued a yellow signal, suspending schools and child care classes throughout the city.

Shenzhen airport said it will suspend operations from 3:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, according to a statement from its official Weibo account, and the city's railway department suspended some train services between Wednesday and Friday, the local Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

China has a four-tier, colour-coded weather-warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Ma-on is expected to gradually weaken after landfall, forecasters predicted. The winds and rain could bring much-needed relief to southern areas assaulted by days of scorching heat, which has pressured China's national electricity grid, damaged crops and caused wildfires.&nbsp;

Though it will not directly impact Taiwan, the outer edges of Ma-on also brought heavy rain to southern and eastern parts of the island, with flights to the outlying Green Island and Orchid Island cancelled on Wednesday.

Hong Kong's gay community suffered a fresh legal setback on Wednesday after the Court of Appeal rejected an appeal against the city's long-held denial of same-sex marriage to those who have legally wed overseas. So far authorities have rejected jury trials for all three major cases that have made it to the High Court, where defendants can face up to life in prison. Lai, 74, is one of Hong Kong's best-known democracy activists and is openly loathed by Beijing.

Lai's Apple Daily newspaper had been very vocal in its criticism of China's Communist Party. The newspaper openly supported democracy. The tabloid shut down last year when China froze its funds. Many of the senior staff of the newspaper &nbsp;were charged with "collusion with foreign forces", one of the new national security crimes.

On Monday, prosecutor Anthony Chau informed the court that six Apple Daily executives have indicated that they plan to plead guilty. 
A guilty plea usually entitles defendants to a sentence reduction.&nbsp;

Lai, who is currently serving a protest-related sentence, plans to plead not guilty, meaning a full trial is expected towards the end of the year or early next year, the court heard.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai to be tried without jury

In the largest combined prosecution in the territory in recent years, Joshua Wong and a group of 28 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists who were accused under a contentious national security statute entered guilty pleas.

Under the broad national security law, a total of 47 defendants, ranging in age from 23 to 64, were charged with conspiring to commit subversion. They were imprisoned in 2021 for their alleged involvement in a plot to bring down Hong Kong's administration by participating in an illegitimate primary election in 2020, according to the authorities. Candidates prepared to take on the Beijing-backed local government at the time received a lot of support in the primary.

According to Hong Kong media, well-known dissidents and campaigners including Wong and legal expert Benny Tai were among the 29 who entered guilty pleas on Thursday. The two guys are already doing time for convictions related to protests. Wong, 25, who is still being held, stated on Thursday that the primary election gave Hongkongers a chance to voice their political preferences. He stated, "Our vote is our voice, being heard in the global community."

Along with Wong and Tai, The Global Times, a state-owned publication in China, claimed on Thursday, that former parliamentarians Claudia Mo, Eddie Chu, and Alvin Yeung all entered guilty pleas. Following the 2019 pro-democracy rallies, almost 2,000 Hong Kong citizens were detained, and the main opposition Apple Daily newspaper was forced to close. Political speech and public gatherings have been put on hold due to a lack of clarity over the authorities' red lines, and more people have been detained as a result of these activities, including the 90-year-old Catholic cardinal Joseph Zen.

In response to the protests in 2020, China enacted the broad national security law, arrested critics in the media and in civil society, and restructured the local legislative council to allow only pro-Beijing individuals to occupy the office.

He added that non-emergency hospital services would be further curtailed in order to free up beds and staff.

Hong Kong reported 6,445 new cases, which is a record high since March's end when the city was coming out of a wave of illnesses that, at one point, was the deadliest in history. In hospitals, there are 1,898 Covid patients, including 25 serious cases, 36 patients in critical condition, and 10 patients in intensive care.

In the application presented to the Hong Kong authorities, the media tycoon said that the phones cannot be inspected on grounds of national security. Earlier, the court granted the National Security Department permission to go through all the contents of the two iPhones belonging to Lai.

The authorities raided the offices of Apply Daily newspaper in August 2020 and confiscated a lot of digital objects before arresting Lai. Lai and his lawyers have argued in their latest request that the phones contain 8,179 journalistic items which are considered ‘privileged information’.

“The national security law does not authorise rule-making that alters established substantive rights under the common law or in a statute by removing or reducing them,” the writ petition said.

Although the new law allows the authorities to access the information of any confiscated object, any confidential information between an entity and their clients can be seen as an exception.

Lai, who is currently serving 20 years in prison, said that the new request will be heard on August 22.

Reportedly, of the four arrested, two men, aged 28 and 29 were administrators and part of an online group called Civil Servant Secrets. The pair worked at the Home Affairs Department and Office of Government Chief Information Officer as a clerk and system analyst respectively. According to the national security police, the arrested individuals were publishing and promoting posts that tried to divide the population of Hong Kong. “They were suspected of publishing posts on that social media group to disseminate seditious messages that promote feelings of ill will and enmity between different classes of the population of Hong Kong," said the police. However, experts privy to the matter suggested that the four locals were simply arrested because they attempted to criticise the current setup, compromising the Chinese influence. The bill, which is now a law in Hong Kong, attempts to punish crimes of secession, sedition, and collusion with foreign forces. When the bill was passed despite ordinary Hong Kong folks taking to the streets for months, it was described by the pro-democracy activists as ‘the end of the Hong Kong that the world knew before’.
