The authorities in Hong Kong and Australia were reportedly tipped off by Mexican officials via intelligence exchange. "Mexica-based officers used their international network to alert AFP officers in Hong Kong about the suspicious consignment being shipped from Mexico to Australia via Hong Kong. Ongoing investigations are under way to identify the transnational serious organised criminals involved in the plot," said the AFP in a statement. Authorities believe that the consignment was part of a massive international drug trafficking ring and if it had been unloaded on the New South Wales shores, the drugs could have been sold as about 18 million street-level deals. They added that it was the first time since 2016 that coconut water shipment for drug delivery was observed. The Mexican cartels rarely use this mode of shipment. Last time, the seized contraband weighed only around six kilogrammes. The report suggests that following Monday’s rout the markets had more or less stabilised but Friday’s dip served as a reminder of the risks of dip buying when it comes to Chinese shares. Notably, the rapid selloffs come ahead of China’s appointments of key party and cabinet members which is expected to take place in the upcoming weeks.&nbsp;

This is also as the government has imposed fresh lockdowns in Wuhan in line with Beijing’s zero-Covid policy while Xi has also reiterated his calls for China’s economic self-reliance. Christina Woon, the investment director for Asia equities in Singapore told Bloomberg it is, “Hard to say how the selloff plays out, but again, a sustained recovery in investor confidence is still dependent on developments like changes to China’s zero COVID policy.”

The government is likely to share details of its plan of creating a top crypto hub at a fintech conference starting on Monday. The push is part of a drive to restore Hong Kong’s credentials as a finance centre after years of political turmoil and Covid curbs sparked a talent exodus.

He also plans to introduce a bill within this year to offer a tax concession to eligible family offices with the target to attract at least 200 family offices to establish or expand their operations in Hong Kong by end-2025.

Hong Kong has lost its position as a financial hub to Singapore and other rivals in recent years and restoring this position is the biggest challenge for Lee.

China's extreme control over political freedoms and strict COVID-19 curbs have led to over 200,000 foreigners and Hong Kongers leaving the city in the past two months. Even though curbs are now being rolled back, some of them are still in place, a major reason for the economic trouble Hong Kong finds itself in.

Several companies also shifted to other countries to get away from the pandemic restrictions which were inhibiting them to function properly.&nbsp;

The incident reportedly took place during a Hong Kong pro-democracy protest against Chinese President Xi Jinping, and it left the protestor severely injured. &nbsp;

“These reports are obviously deeply concerning,” the spokesperson told reporters according to Reuters.&nbsp;

“I understand Greater Manchester Police responded immediately to the incident. I am conscious that their inquiries are ongoing so it would be inappropriate for me to comment beyond that.”&nbsp;

The protests took place as the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party started&nbsp;in Beijing and things got out of control when the protestors were attacked outside the consulate. &nbsp;

The injured protestor, who identified himself as Bob, told BBC that he was attacked by people who came out of the Chinese consulate and started destroying the posters held by the protestors.&nbsp;

“As we tried to stop them, they dragged me inside, and they beat me up,” he said.&nbsp;

The Greater Manchester Police earlier said that an investigation was launched into the attacks and the force was deployed near the consulate to prevent any further escalation of the situation.&nbsp;

The consulate spokesperson did not respond to the assault allegations but said that the situation got worse as the protestors were carrying an “insulting” portrait of Jinping.&nbsp;

This is the first time that the national security law has been used by a court to punish under-18s. The law was introduced in 2020 to persecute pro-democracy protesters.

The teenagers, whose ages ranged between 16 and 19 at the time of the alleged offence, were members of Returning Valiant, a pro-Hong Kong independence group, reports BBC.

They had pleaded guilty to “inciting others to subvert state power”. Two more aged 21 and 26 will be a given a sentence at a later date.

In the court, it was argued that the indicted teenagers used social media and street booths to advocate a "bloody revolution" to overthrow the Chinese state in Hong Kong.

The prosecutors informed the court that the group’s pamphlets mentioned the French and Ukrainian revolutions as examples of successful armed rebellions.

But the judge said that he took note of their “age and immaturity” while sentencing them to a correctional facility, even though their activity was termed as a “serious crime”.

“There’s no evidence to directly prove that anyone was incited by the defendants to subvert state power, but this real risk exists,” he added.
