Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has been vocal about his criticism of Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya in the ongoing IPL 2024 edition. After MI lost their third game on the trot, losing to Rajasthan Royals (RR) by six wickets in match 14 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday (April 1), Irfan came down heavily on Hardik's captaincy. The ex-cricketer-turned-commentator lashed out at the all-rounder for his leadership and claimed that a captain 'won't earn his team's respect' if he doesn't do the difficult things himself.

On his official account on X, formerly Twitter, Irfan wrote after MI's loss, "You always want your Leader to do the difficult things. If he doesn’t do it he won’t earn his team’s respect."

Pathan has slammed Hardik's usage of MI's ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who underbowled in the powerplays in the earlier two games. In the match versus RR, Bumrah was given the ball for the second over, but Irfan stated that the move became mandatory following MI's flop show with the bat. Hardik has also been slammed for not making an impact with the ball and shuffling his batting position. Moreover, he has been booed by fans in every MI game so far, being targetted for replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain.&nbsp;

Talking about the MI-RR game, the home side were asked to bat first. Riding on Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal's three-fers and two scalps from Nandre Burger, RR restricted Mumbai to 122 for 9. In reply, Riyan Parag's mature inning, 39-ball 54*, took his side to their third win on the trot.

At the post-match presentation, Hardik said, "Yes, a tough night, we didn't start the way we wanted to start. I wanted to counter, we were in a decent position to get us around 150-160, but my wicket allowed them to get back more into the game, I needed to do a lot more. It's okay, we didn't expect such a surface, but you can't always have it as a batter, it's nice at times for the bowlers to have a say. It's all about doing the right things, (correct) results happen at times, at some other times it doesn't. As a group, we believe we can do a lot better, but we need to be a bit more disciplined and show a lot more courage."

IPL 2024: 'Won't earn team's respect': Former Indian all-rounder takes a jibe at MI skipper Hardik Pandya

Hardik Panyda's Mumbai Indians (MI) will be looking to jumpstart their campaign when they take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 1. Mumbai will have the advantage of playing at home ground in Wankhede as they look to shake off the loss in first two games. MI are currently at the bottom of the points table of the 10-team event.

Mumbai lost the first match in Pandya's homecoming at Ahmedabad against his previous team Gujarat Titans (GT). MI had failed to chase 169-run target against GT with Pandya scoring just 11 off 10 balls. In the next match against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), MI bowlers were taken to cleaners as Hyderabad posted IPL's highest total of 277/8.

MI although posted 246/5 in 20 overs they ended up losing the game by 31 runs. Pandya's innings of 24 off 20 balls faced a lot of heat due to slow strike rate in a high-octane chase.

While rest of the MI batters did get starts in the match against SRH, the batting still is a concern for MI. They'll hope to turn it around at their home - a batting paradise.&nbsp;

Talking about RR, they currently are third on the points table with two wins in two games. Royals won their first match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 20 runs before beating Delhi Capitals in the next one by 12 runs.

Speaking about the team, Luke Wood is likely to be back for MI in place of Kwena Maphaka. Wood had missed the last game against SRH due to a niggle. For RR, they are expected to continue with the same playing XI with Rovman Powell expected to be their impact sub if required during batting.

It'll be Rohit Sharma's first match in Mumbai after being replaced as captain by Hardik ahead of the ongoing season. While Pandya has been trolled by fans in two away games so far, it is yet to be seen how he's treated by MI fans at home.

IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya in focus as Mumbai Indians take on Rajasthan Royals at home

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was subjected to a hostile reception on his return to the Wankhede Stadium on Monday (Apr 1), forcing presenter Sanjay Manjrekar to chip in and simmer down the situation.

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was subjected to a hostile reception on his return to the Wankhede Stadium on Monday (Apr 1), forcing presenter Sanjay Manjrekar to chip in and simmer down the situation. Pandya arrived at the centre of the ground alongside Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson for the toss when the Mumbai crowd started to boo him vociferously. Pandya could be seen startled by the combative reaction of the crowd that used to adore him in the past. “We’re all set for the toss here. Got the two captains with me – Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians. Big round of applause, ladies and gentlemen,” Manjrekar said, with the crowd booing incessantly. “Behave,” Manjrekar then said. The boos continued when Pandya stepped up to speak to Manjrekar after losing the toss. Such was the cacophony that both of their voices were drowned by the boos. After Manjrekar finished his interview with Hardik, he told him to have a good game and that he was a “champion cricketer”. 🚨 Toss 🚨@rajasthanroyals win the toss and elect to bowl against @mipaltan #TATAIPL | #MIvRR pic.twitter.com/pziDfHNIci — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 1, 2024 × Pandya was also booed during the match against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad last month. IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya booed at Wankhede as Manjrekar comes to his rescue, warns crowd to ‘behave’ - Watch

Contrary to earlier reports of cricket fans facing action, including an arrest if found guilty of booing any player, mainly targeting Mumbai Indians Captain Hardik Pandya, the latest reports&nbsp;state no action will be taken against anyone, provided the fans are following the BCCI's protocols, the sources close to MCA revealed.

MI Captain Pandya has been subjected to abuse and trolling by fans in attendance during two contested matches this season, leading to reports of the franchise or the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) taking necessary actions to prevent it.&nbsp;

However, the source said the state association will follow the BCCI’s protocols only, sidelining any reports of potential arrest for booing Pandya or any player.

“No instructions given for this specific game. There have been set guidelines issued by BCCI on spectators’ behaviour in the stadium over the years, and that is the process that we have followed, and we continue to follow the same for all games, whether IPL or domestic cricket,” the source close to the information said.&nbsp;

In the first-of-its-kind trade at this level, MI sold Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to make space for Pandya’s return, who, until last year, was leading Gujarat Titans. Having led the franchise to its maiden title in the first season, Pandya guided the team to the finals in the next one, only to lose to MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.

With reports of Pandya wanting a return to MI but at one condition that he wishes to be their captain, the franchise took a brave call of going ahead with it. They appointed Pandya as their new captain ahead of IPL 2024, removing Rohit from the position, which irked the MI fans.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Fans to not face any action during MI vs RR game at Wankhede – Sources

Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravi Ashwin has lambasted the fans for booing Mumbai Indians' newly-appointed skipper Hardik Pandya. Notably, the fans in the stadium have been ruthless to Pandya after he replaced Rohit as Mumbai skipper ahead of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. MI have played their two games in Ahmedabad &amp; Hyderabad and fans at both places have booed Pandya mercilessly.

“Have you seen this happen in any other country? Have you seen Joe Root and Zak Crawley fans fight? Or have you seen Joe Root and Jos Buttler fans fight? It’s crazy. Have you seen Steve Smith and Pat Cummins fans fight in Australia?” said Ashwin while criticising the incidents.

IPL 2024: Ravi Ashwin lambasts fans for booing Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya

All is not well in the Mumbai Indians camp in the ongoing Indian Premier League season after they suffered back-to-back defeats under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. The five-time IPL champions have made yet another poor start to the IPL season as they are already playing catch-up with other teams. While there have been talks of disharmony in the MI camp, fans have also given a negative reaction on Hardik’s captaincy reign. So is he fit for the captaincy or should he be given more time. To discuss in details Abhinav Singh and Gautam Sodhi join me Aditya Pimpale in this WION sports podcast as we discuss why on is Hardik Pandya the right choice for MI captaincy.

Is Hardik Pandya right choice to lead Mumbai Indians in IPL?

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has backed his bowlers following the mauling they suffered at the hands of SunRisers Hyderabad in an away clash on Wednesday (Mar 28).

SRH slammed the highest innings total in IPL history – 277/3, with three of their batters completing fifties in the blink of a second.

However, Australia legend Steve Smith was perplexed over Pandya’s decision to hold back Jasprit Bumrah during the initial overs when SRH batters were going bonkers.

Mumbai Indians bowlers had a night to forget against SRH, with none other than Bumrah able to restrict the host from thrashing everyone in this marquee clash. While the debutant Kwena Maphaka conceded 66 runs from four overs – most by an overseas bowler in his first IPL game, the spin duo of Shams Mulani and Piyush Chawla leaked 67 runs in four overs combined. Seamer Gerald Coetzee went for 57 runs but picked one wicket of Travis Head on 62 off 24 balls.

However, Pandya, who also conceded over 10 runs per over, going for 46 off his four, admitted the night was tough for bowlers but hailed the batting display on offer by SRH.

He said no matter what, scoring 277 in a T20 game is some effort and should be complemented.&nbsp;

The skipper also backed his bowlers to come good in games to come, admitting the attack was new and that he liked what he saw.

“The wicket was good. I think SRH batted really, really well. It was tough for the bowlers. 277, no matter how good or bad you bowl, if the opposition gets 277 that means they batted very well. We tried as a bowling unit, but couldn't get the breakthroughs. We could have tried a few things, but we have a young bowling attack. I liked what I saw,” Pandya said after MI’s 31-run defeat in Hyderabad.

<h2>Pandya’s captaincy baffles Smith</h2>

Speaking on Star Sports during SRH’s innings, Smith pointed out Pandya’s mistake, saying that not bringing on their best bowler while Head and Abhishek Sharma were tearing down the MI attack drifted the game away from Mumbai.&nbsp;

Smith said had he been at Pandya’s place, he wouldn’t have waited for the death overs for Bumrah to come and restrict the run flow and instead have brought him earlier to put a full stop on run leakage and pick a wicket.

“I think they missed a trick in bringing Bumrah back in the 13th over. When the ball’s going around like that, you've just got to bring your best bowler back earlier than you would've liked. It's just about adapting on the go. I would've bowled Bumrah out by the 15-16th over to try to get some wickets,” Smith said on Star.&nbsp;

We tried as a bowling unit, but couldn't get the breakthroughs. We could have tried a few things, but we have a young bowling attack. I liked what I saw,” Pandya said after MI’s 31-run defeat in Hyderabad. Pandya’s captaincy baffles Smith Speaking on Star Sports during SRH’s innings, Smith pointed out Pandya’s mistake, saying that not bringing on their best bowler while Head and Abhishek Sharma were tearing down the MI attack drifted the game away from Mumbai. Smith said had he been at Pandya’s place, he wouldn’t have waited for the death overs for Bumrah to come and restrict the run flow and instead have brought him earlier to put a full stop on run leakage and pick a wicket. “I think they missed a trick in bringing Bumrah back in the 13th over. When the ball’s going around like that, you've just got to bring your best bowler back earlier than you would've liked. It's just about adapting on the go. I would've bowled Bumrah out by the 15-16th over to try to get some wickets,” Smith said on Star.

Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) faced Gujarat Titans in match 5 of the IPL 2024 edition on March 24 (Sunday) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. Opting to bowl first, MI restricted GT to 168 for 6, who rode on Sai Sudharsan's 45. In reply, MI needed only 39&nbsp;off the last 24 balls (with six wickets intact) but still ended with 162 for 9 as Shubman Gill &amp; Co. emerged on top by six runs.

Throughout the high-voltage contest, Hardik -- GT's former skipper -- was given a tough time by the Ahmedabad crowd for leaving the franchise and rejoining MI. Some of his captaincy decisions also made heads turn as his side endured a narrow loss. After the game, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan slammed Hardik for&nbsp;giving Jasprit Bumrah -- MI's ace pacer -- only one over in the powerplays and for promoting Australia's Tim David, instead of him, with Rashid Khan having an over left in the end moments.

On his Instagram account, Irfan shared a video and said, "Hardik Pandya made big mistakes in the match. In the powerplay, he bowled 2 overs himself, that was a big mistake. He brought Jasprit Bumrah into the attack a bit late." Notably, Hardik gave away 20 runs&nbsp;in his first two overs without making an impact&nbsp;and allowed Gill &amp; Co. to start strongly.

He further stated, "And secondly, when they were chasing, they sent Tim David higher up the order. He sent Tim David when Rashid Khan had an over left."

Irfan added, "I felt Hardik Pandya maybe didn't want to face Rashid Khan after having not played cricket for a long time. This could be the case. I won't agree with the fact that there was an experienced Indian batter sitting in the dressing room and sent an overseas player under pressure against Rashid. They missed a trick there."

Having played with and against Rashid for a long time, many expected Hardik to come ahead of David. However, he promoted the Aussie batter -- who hasn't faced&nbsp;Rashid a lot -- in the 17th over.

In a video shared on MI's official handle on X, formerly Twitter, Hardik said, "The toughest soldiers get the toughest test and we are the toughest team in the competition. Anyone who could have come even close to where we reached as a batting group are us." He further backed his bowlers, despite their poor outing, and said, "Something that I am really proud of is our bowlers. Even when the day was tough, I didn't see anyone running away. IPL 2024: 'Captain can't go at 120' - Irfan slams Hardik Pandya for his rusty knock in SRH vs MI high-scorer

Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble feels Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya needs to bat up the order in IPL 2024. Ahead of MI's second game, where they lock horns with Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on Wednesday (March 27), Kumble shared some advice for Hardik and stated that the all-rounder should come up the order. The new MI captain was criticised for promoting Tim David to face Rashid Khan in the end overs of Mumbai's unsuccessful 169-run chase versus Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (March 24), in Ahmedabad.

Ahead of MI's crucial game versus SRH, Kumble opined that Hardik needs to come up the batting order and also hoped for Mumbai to learn from their mistakes. Talking on Jio Cinema, he said, "Mumbai Indians were in a great position in their first game when they needed 43 off the last 5 overs with 7 wickets in hand. They let the chase too deep. Hardik Pandya needs to come up the batting order. In T20 cricket, when you are chasing, you are looking at 19 overs and not 20. MI would be learning from the mistakes that they committed in the last game."

Recalling MI's chase versus GT in their season-opener, Mumbai were well-placed at 130-4 in 16 overs and needed just 39 off the last 24 balls. However, they bottled the run-chase with Hardik demoting himself and sending David ahead despite an over in hand for Rashid. Rashid ended with 4-0-23-0 whereas Mohit returned with 4-0-32-2 and Umesh defended 13 off the last over, removing Hardik despite being hit for two boundaries.&nbsp;

MI would like to get past their winless start and get off the mark when they face SRH. Cummins &amp; Co, on the other hand, are coming into this clash on the back of a narrow four-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in Kolkata, in a high-scoring thriller.

IPL 2024: 'He needs to bat higher' - Anil Kumble's advice to MI skipper Hardik Pandya ahead of SRH tie

Mumbai Indians (MI) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will face off in match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on Wednesday (Mar 27). Both teams are winless after facing narrow defeats in their first matches and will be looking to get some points on the table. SRH lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their first match by just four runs in a high-scoring thriller, while MI lost to Gujarat Titans by six runs.

Playing under new captains, both SRH and MI would be itching to leave the loss behind and get their campaigns on track. The hot contests to watch out for in the match are SRH skipper and bowler Pat Cummins going up against MI's Rohit Sharma, as well as MI bowler Jasprit Bumrah pitching to SRH hitter Heinrich Klassen.

While Bumrah produced a magical spell of 3/14 in four overs in MI's first match, Klassen almost took his team home in the chase of 209 by scoring 29-ball 63. As for Cummins, who ended with the figures of 1/32 in the first match, stopping Rohit is going to be the key at the top. Notably, Rohit had provided a good start to MI in their first match, scoring 29-ball 43 in a chase of 169.

Other key players likely to grab the limelight are SRH's Aiden Markram, who scored a poor 13-ball 18 in the opening match against KKR but boasts a good record in the T20 format. Markram most recently led his side to consecutive titles in SA 20 but hasn't been able to perform well for SRH so far.

As for MI, skipper Hardik Pandya will again be in&nbsp;focus for his captaincy and performance. Notably, Pandya faced a bit of criticism for tactical errors in the first match against Gujarat. Another challenge for MI is the availability of star batter Suryakumar Yadav who is still recovering from surgery.

IPL 2024, Match Preview: SRH, MI look to register first wins in Wednesday's clash

An all-round team show from Gujarat Titans helped the home side upset Hardik Pandya’s homecoming as they beat travelling Mumbai Indians by six runs on Sunday (March 24) in Ahmedabad. While bowlers pulled the game to their side in the final five overs, courtesy of a brilliant penultimate and last over by Spencer Johnson and Umesh Yadav, respectively, Sai Sudharsan starred for GT in the first innings, hitting a gritty 45.

Mumbai won the toss, and Hardik elected to bowl first in the side’s tournament opener this season. Wriddhiman Saha and Captain Shubman Gill started brilliantly, scoring fours at will inside the first three overs. Following Saha’s dismissal, Sai and Shubman kept the scoring rate going, adding 33 for the next wicket.

While bowlers pulled the game to their side in the final five overs, courtesy of a brilliant penultimate and last over by Spencer Johnson and Umesh Yadav, respectively, Sai Sudharsan starred for GT in the first innings, hitting a gritty 45. Mumbai won the toss, and Hardik elected to bowl first in the side’s tournament opener this season. Wriddhiman Saha and Captain Shubman Gill started brilliantly, scoring fours at will inside the first three overs. Following Saha’s dismissal, Sai and Shubman kept the scoring rate going, adding 33 for the next wicket. Even after the toss, Hardik was given a tough time by the Ahmedabad crowd during MI's fielding. The all-rounder wasn't retained by the MI camp ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. He went to the Gujarat camp and led them to the title in their inaugural season in 2022. In the following edition, GT ended as the finalists.&nbsp;

Ahead of GT-MI clash, in Ahmedabad, former Australia cricketer Tom Moody opined on Gill taking over from Hardik and cautioned the youngster.

Talking on ESPNCricinfo, Moody said, "For Shubman Gill, it is the unknown. He may have captained at a lower level, but this is a different story, the IPL. And following a very successful two years for Gujarat Titans, he is stepping up to the plate after Hardik Pandya had such an impact as a leader. Can he follow in those footsteps or can he create his own?."

Well, Moody's queries will certainly be answered in the 17th season of the IPL, starting on March 22 (Friday).

Ahead of the upcoming season, GT head coach Ashish Nehra opined on Gill as the new captain. He said, "IPL is a fast game, and it throws challenges for everyone. We have seen how Shubman Gill has been playing for three-four years and how he has shaped up. He is 24-25, but he has a good head on his shoulders. We are there to support him. We believe in him. That's why we have made him the captain."

Gill has a herculean task to fill in the big shoes of Hardik, who led the franchise to the championship in their inaugural edition in IPL 2022.&nbsp;

'He is stepping up to the plate after Hardik Pandya': Moody cautions GT's new captain Gill ahead of IPL 2024

Ahead of the IPL 2024 opener, on Friday (March 22), Mumbai Indians (MI) have suffered a huge blow as their dashing batter Suryakumar Yadav is set to miss his side's opening game. The Mumbai batter has not received clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to participate in the upcoming T20 league. It is to be noted that Surya underwent a fitness assessment at the NCA, in Bengaluru, on Tuesday (March 19). However, the NCA management is understood to have withheld clearance, preventing the swasbuckling batter from being linked with the MI franchise. Surya suffered an ankle injury during India's T20I series versus South Africa in late 2023. In January, he even underwent a groin surgery and hasn't played any competitive cricket since.

<section itemprop="articleBody">
With the NCA clearance still pending,&nbsp;it has effectively led to Surya's omission from MI's opening game. The five-time winners will open their campaign versus Hardik's previous franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 24 in Ahmedabad.

<h2>SKY - An integral part of MI</h2>

Since 2018, when he rejoined the MI franchise, Surya has been a force to reckon with in the IPL. He has amassed 2,641 runs (scoring 81.28 % of his total runs in IPL -- 3,249) in the last six seasons. The MI management will, thus, closely monitor his recovery and hope for him to join the franchise soon.

IPL 2024: Setback for Hardik & Co.! Suryakumar Yadav to miss MI's IPL 2024 opener; awaits NCA clearance

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition is just days away and the tournament is attracting special attention this time as the T20 World Cup follows right after. Several Indian youngsters spread out across all 10 teams will&nbsp;be looking to prove themselves in the league and stake a claim for a spot in India's WC squad.

Some of the players, including Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul will also be getting the spotlight as they mark their return from injury layoffs. Let's have a look at what to watch for in each team in the upcoming IPL edition which starts March 22.

Mumbai Indians: Will Hardik succeed as skipper?

Hardik Pandya will be the new Mumbai Indians skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma. Pandya has previously played for MI as an all-rounder for a long time before his two-year stint at Gujarat Titans. Notably, Hardik led Titans to the IPL title in their maiden season in 2022 and to the final in 2023. His appointment as MI skipper, however, has had mixed reactions from fans and former players alike. It will be interesting to see how Hardik takes Rohit's legacy forward who made Mumbai a five-time champion in the tournament.&nbsp;

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni's last season?

Ever since MS Dhoni retired from international cricket, speculation has been rife about when he'll call time in IPL. While&nbsp;many expected&nbsp;2023 to be his last season where he took CSK to their joint-most fifth IPL title, Dhoni is back for another season. The skipper last year had said that he'd like to finish his career at Chepauk in front of home fans in Chennai. It'll definitely be a point of discussion this season as well with fans continuing to speculate whether&nbsp;Dhoni will keep playing or hang&nbsp;his boots for good.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Will there be an IPL-WPL double?

After RCB Women won the maiden title for the franchise in the recently concluded Women's Premier League (WPL), the pressure will definitely be on the men's side who are still looking for their maiden IPL trophy. RCB has been a side with some of the best players in the league but the team has always fallen short of winning the title. Even Virat Kohli, a name synonymous with the franchise, hasn't been able to make RCB win despite being one of the best batters in the league and the world.&nbsp;

Kolkata Knight Riders - Gambhir to bring back luck?

KKR have brought back Gautam Gambhir as a mentor ahead of the season. Notably, it was under Gambhir's captaincy that KKR won their two IPL titles - in 2012 and 2014. With Shreyas Iyer also coming back after missing the last season due to injury and Rinku Singh emerging as one of the best finishers, KKR look like a settled side this season. Gambhir also brought Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc to the side, bolstering their pace department to go with an already potent spin attack.

Delhi Capitals - Rishabh Pant is back!

The biggest story in this IPL season is Rishabh Pant making his return to competitive cricket since being involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022. After 14 months of rehab, Pant is back and the Capitals will be hoping for a change in fortune after finishing&nbsp;last season ninth in the 10-team event. Pant is also expected to lead the side, taking over the duties from David Warner who held the post last year. With Mitchell Marsh also available and in good form, DC are expected to do better this season.

Gujarat Titans - Real test this season?

The Titans will be playing under a new skipper - Shubman Gill, after Hardik Pandya switched sides. Gill will definitely be under the spotlight given that the Titans made it to IPL finals in back-to-back seasons under Pandya. Star India pacer Mohammed Shami, however, won't be playing this season for GT, making the job difficult for Gill in his first season as captain. The season will prove how strong a side GT is when they play without their two biggest players.

SunRisers Hyderabad - Banking too much on Captain Cummins?

SRH have had some bad seasons in recent years, but this year they have brought in Pat Cummins - the man with a Midas touch. Cummins, as skipper, has led his country, Australia to the World Test Championship (WTC) title, ODI World Cup 2023 title and retained the Ashes 2023 as well. Going by his success, Cummins has been appointed SRH skipper for the 2024 season, so let's see if Cummins changes SRH's fortunes.

Rajasthan Royals - Will Royals be able to break title jinx?

Over the years, the Royals have been able to emerge as a strong trophy contender but have failed to realise their full potential. Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson would also like to play a bigger role instead of throwing his starts away to help the team become a winner this season. Royals, overall, do have a strong team comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravi Ashwin, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Lucknow Super Giants - KL Rahul's form

KL Rahul's form will have a huge impact on LSG's season. Rahul is returning from an injury and will be eager to prove his form ahead of the T20 World Cup. Along with Rahul, LSG will be banking on youngsters like Ayush Badoni, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravi Bishnoi and Deepak Hooda among others to make an impact in IPL 2024.

Punjab Kings - Jitesh Sharma looks to cement India spot

In a team which looks the least strong on paper, Jitesh Sharma will have a chance to cement his place in the Indian squad with another decent season. Along with him, all eyes will also be on Arshdeep Singh and Rahul Chahar as they stake their claim for a spot in the&nbsp;T20 World Cup squad.

As of now, the league has released the schedule for the first 17 days from March 22 to April 7 when 21 games will be played. The rest of the schedule is expected to be out soon.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition is just days away and the tournament is attracting special attention this time as the T20 World Cup follows right after. Several Indian youngsters spread out across all 10 teams will be looking to prove themselves in the league and stake a claim for a spot in India's WC squad. Hardik Pandya will be the new Mumbai Indians skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma. Pandya has previously played for MI as an all-rounder for a long time before his two-year stint at Gujarat Titans. Notably, Hardik led Titans to the IPL title in their maiden season in 2022 and to the final in 2023. His appointment as MI skipper, however, has had mixed reactions from fans and former players alike. It will be interesting to see how Hardik takes Rohit's legacy forward who made Mumbai a five-time champion in the tournament. Explained: What to watch out for in each team during IPL 2024 season

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has revealed that his ODI World Cup 2023 injury got aggravated after pushing the recovery in a bid to play in the semi-final and final of the tournament. Pandya had twisted his ankle in the group stage match against Bangladesh and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the event. The all-rounder will now be featuring in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) as Mumbai Indians skipper.

"I could have been back in one and a half months. But when I got injured my injury from Day 1 showed that I would be out of the World Cup. Playing for India has always been special. We pushed 10 days we knew it was a difficult uphill task to reach and kind of be fit for the semi-final or final. When we pushed I kind of triggered my injury more and my injury became a little longer," Pandya said on his injury during a press conference for MI on Monday (Mar 18).

'I tried to stop...,' India all-rounder Hardik Pandya opens up on ankle injury suffered in 2023 ODI World Cup

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has opened up on his injury last year during the ODI World Cup. Pandya said he promised the team management to return to action in five days&nbsp;but his haste led to aggravation of the injury, forcing him to skip the tournament.&nbsp;

Pandya was last seen in action during the league match against Bangladesh in the marquee tournament.&nbsp;During the match, Pandya twisted his ankle when he came to bowl his first over of the day.&nbsp;

“I had been preparing for the World Cup for more than a year. It was a freak injury during the match. The injury was said to be for 25 days and that would mean I would miss the rest of the World Cup, but I pushed," Pandya told host broadcasters Star Sports.

“I told the management that I would return after five days. I got injections done on my ankle in three places. I had to remove blood from my ankle because of the swelling. I wanted to give everything,” he added.&nbsp;

Pandya said he knew that if he kept pushing, the injury would force him to be away from the game for a long time but the prospect of playing for his country in the World Cup was always the target.&nbsp;

"Even if there was a one per cent chance, I could be with the team, I would do it. While I was pushing for that, I had a reoccurrence which eventually became a three-month injury. I was aiming to run when I could not walk after pushing for 10 days but I missed out."

Although India cruised to the final, his unavailability was felt during the summit clash when the team was put under pressure by record-champions Australia. The Indian side lost its way batting first and could not apply sufficient pressure with the ball while defending.

Hardik Pandya reveals how he pushed hard to return to Indian World Cup squad after injury

IPL 2024 kicks off on March 22 with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who are also the defending champions, taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai. Like every year, there is a lot of buzz about the upcoming IPL season. Dhoni's return is once again making the headlines whereas his protege Rishabh Pant will also mark&nbsp;his comeback at the competitive level since his horrific car crash. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya will start his captaincy tenure with the Mumbai Indians (MI),&nbsp;heralding a new era for the five-time winners (following the end of Rohit Sharma's inspiring leadership).

Ahead of the IPL, WION exclusively interacted with former England spinner Graeme Swann. Swann spoke at length on Dhoni's IPL return and hailed the 42-year-old's fitness and longevity. In addition, he backed MI's bold call to replace Rohit with Hardik as the&nbsp;captain.

<h2>'I don't think IPL will be the same without MSD'</h2>

Dhoni has featured in all IPL seasons since its inception in 2008. At 42, he continues to inspire with his fitness and longevity. Hence, Swann said, "Oh, I have no worries about Dhoni. He is the IPL. He has been there since its inception. He is an absolute megastar in India. I don't think it will be the same without him. I am really looking forward to see him play once again. And he is such a great leader on the field. Even if his fitness wasn't the same as it was 5-6 years (ago), he is still very close to that.&nbsp;He is still performing at an elite level. I have no worries about MS Dhoni playing."

<h2>Everyone knew Hardik would join Mumbai at some point: Swann</h2>

On the other hand, Swann backed MI team management's call to appoint Hardik as the captain, who rejoined the team after being traded by Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of last year's mini-auction in Dubai. While many have slammed their decision to remove Rohit, the Englishman claims it was the right call.

In this regard, he said, "Oh yes. It was (the right decision). He led two years in Gujarat and he was unbelievable. He got that title under his belt. He is a natural leader. Everyone knew at some point that he would return to the mother's arms in Mumbai. I think Mumbai recruited very well. They look very strong now."

All eyes are on Dhoni's comeback on the 22-yard cricket strip. This might be his last season in the IPL. Exclusive: 'He is the IPL' - Graeme Swann lauds MS Dhoni's fitness; backs Hardik's appointment as MI captain

Ahead of IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya recalled his ankle injury that led to him being sidelined from the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. Hardik played just three full&nbsp;games for India in the ODI WC and twisted his ankle while bowling in Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s fourth encounter&nbsp;versus Bangladesh in Pune on October 19. The MI skipper revealed why he decided to pull out from the tournament as he didn't want&nbsp;the team to have a player who is '50 per cent fit'.

While speaking to the press ahead of MI's IPL 2024 opener, versus Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 24 in Ahmedabad, Hardik stated, "When I got injured. When it happened, I had no clue how bad it is or how good it is. When I went to the scan as well. Initially, it just showed because, when I twisted my whole ankle, it just showed that it's just a little niggle, which would be fine."

"But as a couple of hours progressed, it showed the real picture where my ankle became like a big ankle. And in that process, straight away next day I went to NCA to make sure that I fasten my processes and make sure that I come back," he opined.

Hardik further mentioned, "Again, we tried every day to make sure that we are available for the World Cup and we had to take a call after 12th day where I had a recurrence again where my injury kind of expanded more."

And the question was that 'do I want to represent India at 50 per cent? And the answer was No. Because India deserves better than that, and I myself will not be able to justify the fact that I'm coming, not completely ready," he added.

Hardik concluded by saying, "And from there obviously journey started of my rehab and the whole process was the focus was only to make sure that I come back as soon as possible, but with injuries and with something like a freak injury which I had, you need to give time because it is not something which goes away in mobility or it goes with physio helping you. It is just natural body recovery which you need to do."

Hardik will be looking to play IPL 2024 without any injury concerns and then gear up for the ICC T20 World Cup. The T20 WC will commence on June 1, in West Indies and USA, and Rohit-led India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan.

At present, Hardik-starrer MI is gearing up for their IPL 2024 opener, where they play Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 24.

And the answer was No' Hardik further mentioned, "Again, we tried every day to make sure that we are available for the World Cup and we had to take a call after 12th day where I had a recurrence again where my injury kind of expanded more." And the question was that 'do I want to represent India at 50 per cent? And the answer was No. Because India deserves better than that, and I myself will not be able to justify the fact that I'm coming, not completely ready," he added. Hardik concluded by saying, "And from there obviously journey started of my rehab and the whole process was the focus was only to make sure that I come back as soon as possible, but with injuries and with something like a freak injury which I had, you need to give time because it is not something which goes away in mobility or it goes with physio helping you. It is just natural body recovery which you need to do." Hardik will be looking to play IPL 2024 without any injury concerns and then gear up for the ICC T20 World Cup.

Didn’t want to represent India at ‘50 per cent’: MI captain Hardik Pandya recalls his injury during ODI WC

Ahead of the IPL 2024 opener, on March 22, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya and head coach Mark Boucher addressed the media. In the presser, Hardik spoke on leading India captain Rohit Sharma for the first time in the upcoming season. In December 2023, the MI team management named Hardik as the captain, replacing Rohit who led the franchise from 2013-2023 (winning them five titles).

Since the big announcement, a lot has been said and written about Hardik. It will be interesting to see how he leads Rohit, under whom he has played majority of his cricket. Hardik reacted to the prospect of leading Rohit and said that it won't be 'awkward' for him and feels Hitman will be around to help him whenever needed.

<h2>'Rohit is the captain of the Indian team'</h2>

Hardik said, "First of all, it won't be any different because he is going to be there to help me out, if I need any help. At the same time, he is the captain of the Indian team, which helps me because this team, what he has achieved under his captaincy, from now onwards, I want to carry forward what he has achieved."

"It won't be awkward or anything different. It will be a nice experience. I have played all my career under his captaincy. I know he is going to have a hand on my shoulder always, throughout the season," he further mentioned.

On Rohit's removal as MI captain, many fans shared their disappointment. Even the social media followers of the MI franchise dipped considerably. Hardik reacted to the fans' sentiments and said on the negative response, "Backlash bit. To be very honest, we respect fans. At the same time, we focus on sport. I control the controllables. I don't focus on what I can't control. At the same time, I am very grateful to fans. They have every right to say what they say. I respect their opinion. At the same time, we will focus on doing well."

‘I know he is...’: MI skipper Hardik says he won’t feel ‘awkward’ in leading India captain Rohit in IPL 2024

Former India seamer Praveen Kumar has come down hard on the Mumbai Indians captain and all-rounder Hardik Pandya for skipping domestic matches and choosing IPL over playing for his state team in the Ranji Trophy.&nbsp;

After what happened with the young duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who got released from BCCI’s central contract list for the upcoming season for not abiding by the board’s instructions, questions were raised about Pandya’s name on the list (in A category), despite him not featuring for India across formats for some time now.

With the board urging all centrally-contracted players to appear for their state teams in all domestic competitions, including Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy, while being away from international commitments, Pandya hasn’t featured in one.&nbsp;

While he remains the top guy in the white-ball format, primarily in the T20Is (for his exploits), Pandya hasn’t turned up for the Test side since last playing in 2018.

Irked over BCCI’s double standards regarding certain players, Praveen, known for being blunt with his expressions, asked why rules differ for Hardik while others suffer a contrasting fate for similar fouls.

“Has Hardik Pandya descended from the moon? He has to play too. Why are there different rules for him? The BCCI should threaten him. Why would you play just the domestic T20 tournament (DY Patil)? Play all three formats. Or have you played 60-70 Test matches that you will just play T20? The country needs you," Kumar said on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel.

<h2>Praveen seeks clarity on Pandya as Test cricketer</h2>

After dodging queries around his role as a Test cricketer, Pandya, around last year’s World Test Championship (in June), reverted to one of the questions, saying, ‘I haven't even done 10 per cent to reach there.’&nbsp;

Questioning his role as a Test cricketer, Praveen asked if Pandya had given it in writing to the board that he would remain unavailable for selection in the longer format, and if not then he must clear his stance on picking format per his liking.

"Give it in writing that I am not available for Tests. Neither are you committing from it nor are you withdrawing entirely. The BCCI should also be questioned.&nbsp;

"You can't twist and mould rules for one player. But I feel that there must have been a discussion. If they think Hardik is an asset in T20 and we don't want his fitness to be affected. Then it's fine. Either that or a player should be informed that he is only going to be considered for T20s and ODIs but not for Tests. That way, a player is satisfied knowing about his future," Praveen added.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League, starting March 22 in Chennai. Mumbai will face Gujarat on Sunday (March 24) in an away clash in their opener.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Praveen Kumar launches scathing attack on Hardik Pandya over 'special treatment'

Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra finally broke his silence on Hardik Pandya’s shock trade to his former franchise, Mumbai Indians, ahead of IPL 2024. Although Nehra said that the franchise would miss Pandya, he admitted not trying enough to convince him to stay, knowing Pandya's intentions of returning to his old team for which he played for six years.&nbsp;

Nehra explained how, with each passing year, everyone learns a lot from the cash-rich league, Pandya’s switch to MI (where he replaced Rohit as the new captain) makes one understand the importance of growth and what moving ahead in life means.&nbsp;

Nehra said in times to come, more such trades will make headlines.

"I didn't try to convince him a lot. That is because as you play more, the more experience you gain - like he came here and played for two years."

“[But] he played for that team (Mumbai Indians) for five or six years. And the way this game has been going along, people say that it is heading in the direction of soccer or basketball. So, we will end up seeing those trades [in cricket too]. "

“Yes, GT will miss Hardik Pandya. But it is a new opportunity for him. Every year IPL teaches you something new, and this year too there will be something new to learn. Best wishes [to him] from our side,” Nehra said.

<h2>Not easy to replace Shami, Hardik</h2>

Having won the league in their first attempt in 2022, Gujarat made it to the finals in their second season only to lose to CSK in a rain-hit thriller. The mantra behind their success was the core that included several overseas stars and Indian Team players like Pandya, Gill and Mohammed Shami – two of whom will not be there this season.

Speaking on Shami and Pandya’s absence, Nehra said no money can buy the experience both brought to the table and that the franchise will miss them.

“In any sport, you have to move on. You can't buy experience to replace Hardik, Shami, it's not going to be easy," Nehra said.&nbsp;

“But, there's the learning curve. Every year, new guys come, and they step in, and that's how teams move forward. In IPL, every team has the luxury of 25 players. It's a 12-person game, but you are talking about Hardik Pandya and Shami - to fill those shoes is not easy.”

“But like I said, we have enough people, Umesh Yadav, again a guy who has been playing IPL [for] 10-12 years. Sai Kishore, he didn't play last year, but he's been doing so well. So every year, you will see new guys, and you have to believe in yourself and prepare for that,” Nehra added.

IPL 2024: ‘I didn't try to convince him a lot’- Nehra breaks silence on Hardik Pandya’s move to Mumbai Indians

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra is not nervous about newly-elected captain Shubman Gill leading the franchise in IPL 2024; instead, he is excited to see how the young prodigy operates at the helm with a strong squad. Speaking to the media ahead of the 17th season that begins on March 22 in Chennai, Nehra said more than wanting Gill to succeed as a captain, he wants him to become a better person, a natural pathway to becoming a great leader.

"The whole of India, not only me," Nehra said. "He (Gill) is that kind of player. He is someone who is looking to play and looking to do well in all three formats. So we, as a franchise, as a support staff, are really excited to help him grow as a person more than as a captain. If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward,” the GT head coach added.

Addressing the elephant in the room regarding Gill being a rookie in the leadership group, Nehra backed his ace player to deliver in his maiden stint as IPL captain.&nbsp;

Nehra said since ten teams play in this cash-rich league, several such instances of players not having enough captaincy experience doing well have been witnessed and will keep making headlines in times to come.

"And you know, Hardik also did not captain anywhere before he captained GT. Now there are ten teams. This is not the first example. You will see more and more people, you know, somebody like Shreyas Iyer, even Nitish Rana did captaincy for KKR.&nbsp;

So, this is a great experience for all these guys, and let's see who capitalises on that and move ahead, again, first as a person then as a player,” Nehra explained.

<h2>GT behind Gill</h2>

Shubman Gill is one of the most promising batters across formats worldwide, let alone from India, and GT’s batting coach, Gary Kirsten, feels this will help him as a leader in the upcoming season. Kirsten added that coaches will assist Gill in getting the best out of his players while backing him to lead the team the way he wants.

“I think the leadership is going to be an important role for him, and I know he's really keen to do the job, and we, as coaches, just need to assist him in making sure he's getting the best out of his players and he's leading the team appropriately, and in the way we want him to lead,” Kirsten said.&nbsp;

Kirsten heaped praises on Gill, saying, he’s determined but must accept the challenges that come his way.&nbsp;

“He's a quality player. He's a thoroughly nice person. He's got massive motivation and determination as an individual, which we've seen when playing for India.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: GT coach Nehra throws weight behind new captain Shubman Gill, says he’s excited to watch him operate

Ahead of the IPL 2024 edition, which kicks off on March 22 in Chennai, all eyes are on Hardik Pandya who is set to commence his journey as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain. The MI management announced the big news in Dec 2023, after trading Hardik from Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the mini-auction, that the all-rounder -- who made his IPL debut for MI in IPL 2015 -- will lead the side, replacing Rohit Sharma.

Under Rohit, MI became a force to reckon with; winning all&nbsp;five of their IPL titles in his leadership. He started leading the franchise midway during IPL 2013 and led them to the championship in the same year, winning four more in IPL 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Before IPL 2024's commencement, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh -- who was also part of MI in IPL 2019 -- stated that he would've given Rohit another season as captain and made Hardik his deputy.

In a video for host broadcasters Star Sports, Yuvraj said, "Rohit Sharma is a 5-time IPL winner as a captain. Removing him is a big decision. I would have gotten someone in, like they brought Hardik (Pandya), but I still would have given Rohit one more season and let Hardik be the vice-captain and see how the whole franchise works."

Would've given Rohit Sharma one more season as Mumbai Indians captain: Yuvraj

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain, in December 2023, ahead of the IPL 2024 edition. The move shocked many as Hardik rejoined his former franchise after being traded by Gujarat Titans (GT), who won the IPL championship under him in&nbsp;their maiden season in 2022. Ahead of the upcoming season, many former cricketers and experts have opined on&nbsp;how Hardik and Rohit will have to work in tandem to ensure MI's success. Now, former England opener Nick Knight also joined the bandwagon and feels Rohit will still be a leader and help Hardik.

Talking on Sports18, Knight said, "I think a lot of it depends on Rohit Sharma's reaction to it, how he feels about it. How do I think he would react to it? Certainly, on the pitch, he would go out and play his best possible game for the team. He would realise how important his contribution is for the team."

"I would also like to think that he would help Hardik, help him do his job as best as he can. We have talked a lot about Rohit, his captaincy and leadership skills. He can still be a leader, in a slightly different way. I would fully expect him to do that," he added.

Rohit took charge of the MI franchise midway through the IPL 2013 season. Since then, he led the team to five IPL titles (in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020). In IPL 2023, Mumbai were off to a poor start but they managed to reach the playoffs where they lost to Hardik-led GT in Qualifier 2.

With captaincy responsibility off his shoulders, Hitman will now focus on his batting as he has had an ordinary run in the IPL since the 2017 season.

For MI, a&nbsp;new chapter will surely commence in their rich history during IPL 2024 with Hardik taking over from Rohit. It&nbsp;will be interesting to see how the two operate with each other and take the franchise forward.

IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma can still be a leader at Mumbai Indians, feels former England opener Nick Knight

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody says that Hardik Pandya's biggest challenge as the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians' (MI) skipper will be not allowing the pressure to enter the dressing room. Notably, Pandya will be making a return to MI after two seasons as Gujarat Titans' skipper in 2022 and 2023 seasons. The blockbuster trade also saw Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai skipper.

"They (MI) expect nothing but excellence, which is what you will expect of any high-performance environment. So Hardik's challenge is managing that expectation and allowing himself and his whole team to be able to play with that freedom, without that pressure sort of filtering into the dressing room," Moody said to StarSport.

On speaking if losing the captaincy will have any effect on Rohit, Moody said: "We know what Rohit Sharma is capable of doing and how dangerous he is as a player, as he has demonstrated with an Indian shirt on his back. I don't think the captaincy is going to have any bearing on his approach. I think he will go out and play his brand of cricket. He is very confident and owns his own game."

Mumbai won five titles under Rohit's captaincy after he took over the reins in 2013. He marshalled the troops in 158 games, second only to CSK skipper MS Dhoni's 226. During his tenure, Rohit won 87 games - also the second most behind Dhoni's 133 wins.

As a batter, Rohit is fourth highest run-getter in the league history. The Indian skipper has 6,211 runs in 243 games, behind only Virat Kohli (7,263 runs), Shikhar Dhawan (6,617 runs) and David Warner (6,397 runs). Sharma, however, has most most sixes among active IPL players - 257 - which is also the second highest overall to Chris Gayle's 357.

Former IPL coach Tom Moody reveals MI skipper Hardik Pandya's biggest challenge in upcoming season

After a lengthy spell away from the cricketing field, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is gearing up for a comeback in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ahead of his return to the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, Pandya made surprising remarks about his personal batting milestones.&nbsp;

Pandya said during a show that he does not believe in scoring 50s or 100s and that statistics were a waste of time for him. During the show, Pandya was quizzed about the number of&nbsp;half-centuries he had scored in the tournament.&nbsp;

When someone from crowd shouted the answer, which was 10, Pandya was surprised&nbsp;and said:&nbsp;"I have that many? Wow."

Upon being asked to pick his favourite half-century, Hardik replied to one of the audience member:&nbsp;"I don't like the innings where we lost."

After this, another person&nbsp;mentioned his 21-ball 60-run knock against Rajasthan Royals from IPL 2020, but it was also rejected by Pandya.

"We lost that too. I don't believe in 50s or 100s. Stats are just numbers; it's a waste of time," said Hardik.

Pandya's statement divided the internet akin to the way his national teammate KL Rahul did when he said strike rate was an overrated metric to assess a player's performance.&nbsp;

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)&nbsp;skipper last year said the obsession with strike rate should be taken into perspective by looking at the context of the game.&nbsp;

“I think the strike rate is overrated. But it depends upon the demand, like if you chase 140 – you don’t need to go with 200 strike rate – it depends upon the current situation,” said Rahul.&nbsp;

‘Don’t believe in 50s or 100s,’ says Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL return to MI

The Indian Premier League (IPL) season is all set to kick off on March 22 as franchises flex their muscle to conquer the crown in the country’s biggest franchise league. One of the prime candidates to win the IPL 2024 title will be five-time champions Mumbai Indians who will be under new leadership from the upcoming campaign. Hardik Pandya, who will resume his second stint with the Mumbai-based side, reflected on his journey and called the 2015 season as his best having won the title that year.

<h2>Hardik on 2015 IPL</h2>

“The first title holds a special place in my memory as it (2015) was the best year of my career. My two best performances came in the knockout stage of the season’s IPL, so It goes down as a memorable moment for me,” Hardik said while speaking in a programme in Mumbai.

Pandya, who returned to Mumbai on the deadline day of the trade window in November, will take over from Rohit Sharma, who successfully led the franchise to five IPL titles during his stint as the skipper of the side. He now joins the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Ricky Ponting to lead the record IPL champions.

The announcement on December 15 came as a big surprise for the cricket fraternity after Rohit decided to step down from his role as captain.&nbsp;Pandya, having led Gujarat Titans (GT) in the previous two seasons, will now look to help his new team, Mumbai Indians, clinch the title.

Interestingly, Pandya's first year with GT saw him lead them to glory after beating Rajasthan Royals in the final of the 2022 tournament. Pandya also acts as deputy to Rohit in the Indian cricket team but is currently nursing an injury.
