NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that Europe cannot defend itself without the United States, amid growing transatlantic unease over President Donald Trump’s ambitions regarding Greenland. Speaking to members of the European Parliament in Brussels, Rutte said any belief that Europe could ensure its own security without US support was unrealistic, stressing that NATO allies “need each other” as concerns grow over the future of US–Europe relations.

US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland from Denmark, has now joined an online trend featuring the widely shared "Nihilist Penguin" meme.

Trump Greenland Takeover: White House Shares Cryptic Post on Greenland

#gravitas US President Donald Trump said he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had laid out a “framework of a future deal” on Greenland’s status during talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, framing the move as a step toward closer Arctic security cooperation and eased transatlantic tensions over proposed tariffs. Trump suggested the framework could provide the United States with broad access to the strategically vital Arctic island, though specifics remain unclear.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen pushed back, saying that sovereignty is a “red line” that cannot be crossed and that Nuuk had not been part of the Davos discussions, underscoring that any decisions about Greenland’s future must involve Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark itself. Danish and EU officials have echoed that territorial integrity and international law must be respected in any negotiations.

Trump claims ‘total access’ Greenland deal, PM Nielsen says unaware of details

Donald Trump announces a sweeping new framework on Greenland after high-level talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, securing long-term U.S. control over key military bases and strategic territories in the Arctic. The deal halts threatened trade tariffs and reshapes regional security as Washington moves to counter growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. While stopping short of annexation, the agreement gives the United States sovereign rights over major military zones, raising concerns in Denmark and across Europe.

US-Greenland Tensions: Donald Trump Claims Framework Deal on Greenland

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jan 21) shifted course on Greenland. The POTUS, who had been pushing a hardline approach to acquire Greenland, used the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos to hint at a softer approach on Greenland. On the back of that understanding, he said, the tariffs planned for February 1 would not go ahead. "Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.
