The tech giant&nbsp;has&nbsp;developed a technique that could cover a vast area. Google said that it is using existing fibre to detect disturbances on the seafloor. The company said in a blog post: “Better yet, our technique relies on equipment that is present on the vast majority of the world’s existing fiber optic systems, so it is broadly applicable.”&nbsp;

According to Google, these optic fibres can connect different continents to the ocean floor through which most of the&nbsp;internet’s international traffic&nbsp;too travels. “Google’s global network of undersea cables makes it possible to share, search, send, and receive information around the world at the speed of light,” it added.

These cables are made of optic fibres that could carry the data in the form of a light pulse travelling at 204,190 kilometres per second.&nbsp;

The receiving end detects these light pulses and a digital signal processor is used to correct distortions. When tracked as a&nbsp;part of optical transmission, the light&nbsp;is in the state of polarization (SOP). “The SOP changes in response to mechanical disturbances along the cable and tracking these disturbances enables us to detect seismic activity,” Google said.

Google began the project in 2013 and conducted its first experiment in 2019. Since then the technology has detected mild intensity earthquakes in Mexico and Chile. If successfully implemented, this tech could save millions of lives!

The lawsuit alleges the data collection happens through Google's Firebase, a set of software popular among app makers for storing data, delivering notifications and ads, and tracking glitches and clicks. Firebase typically operates inside apps invisibly to consumers.

Google uses some Firebase data to improve its products and personalise ads and other content for consumers, according to the lawsuit.

US antitrust investigators have been looking into whether Google has unlawfully stifled competition in advertising and other businesses by effectively making Firebase unavoidable.

In its case last month, Boies Schiller Flexner accused Google of surreptitiously recording Chrome browser users' activity even when they activated what Google calls Incognito mode. Google said it would fight the claim.

Alphabet Inc's Google on Monday said it would start showing fact-checking labels on Google Images search results globally, as tech companies come under increasing pressure to combat the viral spread of misleading claims online.

Google will display the "fact check" labels underneath thumbnails that appear in image search results along with a summary of third-party fact-checkers' findings, as it already does on its general search engine and on Google News results.

Such attempts involve forged emails with links designed to harvest passwords or infect devices with malware.

The effort targeted personal email accounts of staffers in both campaigns, according to the company statement.&nbsp;

A Google spokesman added that "the timeline is recent and that a couple of people were targetted on both campaigns. We sent targetted users our standard government-backed attack warning and referred the incidents to federal law enforcement."

Neither the Biden nor the Trump campaign would not say how many staffers were targetted, when the attempts took place or whether the phishing was successful.

The app, "Remove China Apps", had become top trending free app on Google's mobile app store in India with more than five million downloads since late May. Its popularity rose amid calls for a boycott of Chinese mobile apps in India during a Himalayan border dispute between the two nations.

A Google spokesman confirmed to Reuters the app had been removed due to violation of app store policies, but gave no further details.

OneTouch AppLabs, which developed the app, did not respond to a request for comment. On its website it confirmed the app had been removed and thanked users for their support.

Google takes down Indian app that removed Chinese ones

India's antitrust body is looking into allegations that say Alphabet Inc's Google is abusing its market position to unfairly promote its mobile payments app in the country.

The complaint was filed in February and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has kept the identity of the complainant confidential, according to Reuters. It alleges the company is able to leverage its strong position in the Android market to promote the app.

The complaint alleges the US tech giant more prominently showcases its Google Pay app inside its Android app store in India, giving it an unfair advantage over apps of competitors which hurts consumers.

Google will respond in due course, it's reported.

The case filing is currently being reviewed by senior CCI members.

This is Google's third major antitrust challenge in India.

Google Pay allows users in India to do inter-bank fund transfers and bill payments. It competes with apps such as Softbank-backed Paytm and Walmart's PhonePe in India's crowded digital payments market, where Facebook's WhatsApp is also planning a similar service.

According to the reports, Google helped boost TikTok’s ratings from 1.2 to 1.6 stars by deleting over 5 million reviews overnight.&nbsp;

TikTok’s user reviews had suddenly plummeted on Play Store from 27 million users to 22 million users from last week.&nbsp;

The reason behind this rating fall of TikTok is a controversy where TikTok was attacked with severe criticism. This was mainly because of the spat between Amir Siddiqui and Carry Minati.

Amir Siddiqui had posted a video on Instagram calling out YouTubers. In the video, he accused YouTubers of plagiarism. This video was then picked up by a popular roaster Ajey Nagar, popularly known as CarryMinati, who bashed Amir Siddiqui and other TikTok users. But Carry Minati’s video was deleted by YouTube and that re-ignited the fire of #BanTikTokInIndia.

Contract tracing is deemed necessary to reopen the US economy, which has been hard hit by shutdowns aimed at slowing the spread of the disease which has killed more than 58,000 Americans.

"Many are willing to pay even higher prices for liquor, but can't get any. I was lucky as I at least got some," said Manish, who gave only his first name.

According to Google Trends, online searches for "how to make alcohol at home" peaked in India during the week of March 22-28, the same week Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed the nationwide lockdown.

In late March, grey-market sellers were charging double the price, but premiums have been rising daily with liquor shops being sealed to prevent illegal sales, say excise officials.

The lockdown has now been extended to May 3 as the number of virus cases crossed 10,000.

"Even habitual drinkers hold limited stocks which must have been exhausted by now. In coming weeks, more and more consumers will try to buy from the grey market," said an excise official from Maharashtra. 
As branded liquor prices have surged, some consumers such as Naresh, from Indore, have been forced to drink homemade drinks, often known as "country liquor".

"Even hooch is so expensive. In normal circumstances I could have bought branded liquor at this price," he said, declining to give his family name.

More than a dozen consumers spoke to Reuters and said a 180 ml hooch bottle was now selling at over 250 rupees, up from roughly 60 rupees. All declined to be fully identified.

In Uttar Pradesh, two people died last week after drinking home-brewed liquor, while five others were admitted to hospital in critical condition, police said.

Liquor scarcity has also sparked break-ins at wine shops and fraud, with buyers conned into making online payments for liquor that never arrived, a police official in Pune said.

Local media have reported at least a dozen cases of suicide due to alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and at least two northeast states have opted to reopen alcohol stores this week to address consumer demand. 
"I feel good that (liquor) shops have opened today. I used to get bored at home as we were only sitting (at home) but now this (liquor) will entertain me," a customer who gave his name as Santosh said in Guwahati, Assam.

The tech giant published charts that compare traffic from February 16 to March 29 to retail and recreational places, train and bus stations, grocery stores and workplaces with a five-week period earlier this year.

The post further said the trends will show a percentage point increase or decrease in visits to places like parks, shops, homes and places of work, not "the absolute number of visits".&nbsp;

It was signed by Jen Fitzpatrick, who is the chief of Google Maps, and the company's chief health officer Karen DeSalvo.

The data revealed that in France, movements to visits to restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, museums or theme parks have come down by 88 per cent from their normal levels.&nbsp;

Local shops initially saw a surge of 40 per cent in the number of visits when isolation measures were first announced but it then dropped to 72 per cent.&nbsp;

In India, visits to places such as restaurants and theatres dropped to 77%.

"We hope these reports will help support decisions about how to manage the COVID-19 pandemic," the Google executives said.

"This information could help officials understand changes in essential trips that can shape recommendations on business hours or inform delivery service offerings."

Like how traffic jams or traffic measurements are detected on Google Maps, the new reports will also use "aggregated, anonymised" data from users who have turned on their location.&nbsp;

No "personally identifiable information," such as an individual's location, contacts or movements, will be shared, the post clarified.&nbsp;

Countries like China, Israel, and Singapore, earlier ordered electronic monitoring of their citizens to curb the containment of virus's spread.&nbsp;

Tech firms in Europe and the United States have started sharing "anonymised" smartphone data to better track the outbreak.&nbsp;

Germany is also considering a smartphone app to help control the outbreak.

However, activists said that authoritarian regimes are using these measures as a pretext to push surveillance and curb free speech.&nbsp;

In liberal democracies, there are fears that widespread tracking could have damaging effects on privacy and digital rights.
