Germany is headed for snap elections on February 23, the main parties agreed Tuesday, aiming to form a stable government after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition collapsed last week.

The country's two biggest parties agreed on the early timetable, which will see centre-left leader Scholz seek a vote of confidence on December 16, said Rolf Muetzenich, the parliamentary leader of Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD).

This would pave the way for the February vote in a compromise hammered out with the conservative opposition Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian allies CSU.

The agreement seeks to quickly restore political stability at a time when Europe's biggest economy is set to shrink for a second year in a row and amid heightened geopolitical volatility, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The election date would mean Germany will be ruled by a lame-duck chancellor and stuck in the middle of its campaign period when Donald Trump is inaugurated as US president on January 20.

Embattled Scholz, who wants to run again despite poor poll ratings, initially suggested an election in late March but came under heavy pressure from all other parties to speed up the process.

The CDU is riding high in the polls and its leader, Friedrich Merz, had pushed strongly for an election as early as possible—a demand backed by two-thirds of voters, according to a recent survey.

"We don't have unlimited time to elect a new government in Germany, regardless of who leads it... because the world around us is not waiting," Merz said on Tuesday.

"It's not as if everyone is holding their breath and watching Germany in fascination, as decisions are taken in Europe, Asia and the United States.&nbsp;

"The world expects a Germany that is capable of taking action."

<h2>Winter election campaign&nbsp;</h2>

The February 23 date would force politicians to run their campaigns in the dark and cold of winter, when voters will be less enthusiastic to flock to outdoor events than during the usual summer campaign seasons.

Scholz is expected to lose the confidence vote in the lower house of parliament, after which President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will have 21 days to dissolve the Bundestag.

Elections have to be held within 60 days of the dissolution.

Scholz took office in late 2021, taking over from the CDU's Angela Merkel, in a three-way coalition with the left-leaning Greens and the liberal and pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

But mounting differences over economic and fiscal policy came to a head last week when Scholz fired the rebellious FDP finance minister Christian Linder, prompting the small party to leave the government.

Since then, Scholz's SPD and the Greens have carried on in a minority government that would need opposition support to pass any laws—something the CDU/CSU had rejected in the absence of clarity on an election date.

<h2>Future scenarios&nbsp;</h2>

Scholz's coalition marked the first time a tripartite alliance has ruled at the federal level, and it may not be the last, given Germany's increasingly fragmented political party landscape.

Fears about immigration have driven the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. It is now polling at close to 20 percent, but other parties have pledged to shun it as a coalition partner.

The latest polls put the centre-right CDU/CSU alliance firmly in the lead at 32 percent.

To win a majority, however, the conservatives would likely need the future backing of the SPD, which is currently polling at 15.5 percent, in a so-called grand coalition, plus a third party.

Contenders for that spot, according to current polling, would be either the FDP, with five percent support, or possibly the Greens, who are polling at 11 percent.

Lindner, who has said he wants to be finance minister again, on Tuesday welcomed the date for new elections, saying, "Happily we now have clarity on this question."

He earlier said that he thought Merz "will almost certainly be the next chancellor of Germany. The only question is, Who will chancellor Merz govern with?"

Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday (Nov 6) fired his rebellious Finance Minister Christian Lindner, spelling doom for the three-party coalition though Scholz could stay on in a minority government. The move came after weeks of bitter feuding that have rocked the coalition government between Scholz's Social Democrats, Lindner's Free Democrats and the Greens. Scholz fired his finance minister during a crunch meeting of senior figures from all three ideologically disparate parties at the chancellery, Scholz's spokesman Steffen Hebestreit told AFP. Also read | South Korea president says 'not ruling out' direct weapons to Ukraine The chancellery scheduled a press conference for 2015 GMT, and Lindner announced statements to the media shortly after, to be followed by Greens politicians. Fiscal hawk Lindner had proposed sweeping reforms to jumpstart the troubled German economy that the other two parties opposed, and had long flirted with bolting the unhappy coalition. He had repeatedly warned of "an autumn of decisions" as difficult budget talks have loomed. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck of the Greens had warned that the US presidential election, Germany's economic woes and the Ukraine and Middle East wars make this "the worst time for the government to fail". The Bild daily reported that on Wednesday he told the other parties that the talks of recent days had shown there was not enough common ground on economic and financial policy. Also read | China braces for renewed tensions with Trump over trade, technology, and Taiwan Lindner had argued that Donald Trump's US presidential election victory had made an economic turnaround even more urgent. The newspaper added that Lindner had suggested that the parties opt for new elections in early 2025, but that Scholz had rejected the proposal. If confirmed, this would suggest the Social Democrats and the Greens will seek to stay in power as a minority government until the scheduled elections in September 2025. German lawmakers, in a landmark vote on Friday (Jan 19), gave the green light to legislation aimed at facilitating the acquisition of citizenship and eliminating constraints on holding dual citizenship.

The proposal was championed by center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz's socially liberal coalition. The lawmakers voted 382-234 in parliament. A total of 23 lawmakers chose to abstain.

However, the vote was not without dissent. The main center-right opposition bloc strongly criticised the initiative, asserting that it could diminish the value of German citizenship. On the contrary, supporters argue that the changes will enhance immigrant integration and attract skilled workers to contribute to the country's development.

The legislation is part of a broader series of social reforms promised by Scholz's three-party coalition since taking office in late 2021.&nbsp;

<h2>What does the approved plan entail?&nbsp;</h2>

Under the approved plan, eligibility for citizenship will be reduced to five years of residency, or three in the case of "special integration accomplishments."

This is a major overhaul if one is to compare it with the current requirements where foreign nationals who have been living in Germany for at least 8 years may be eligible for naturalisation. Whereas for special integration it is currently six years.

Furthermore, under the changes, German-born children will automatically gain citizenship if one parent has been a legal resident for five years, down from the previous eight-year stipulation.

<h2>Restrictions on dual citizenship</h2>

One of the most significant shifts is the removal of restrictions on dual citizenship, a move designed to align Germany with its European neighbours like France.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser spoke of the need to compete globally for skilled individuals, stating, "We also must make qualified people from around the world an offer like the US, like Canada, of which acquiring German citizenship is a part."

Despite these changes, the legislation specifies that individuals seeking naturalisation must be able to support themselves and their dependents.

At present, people from European Union countries and Switzerland are required to drop their nationality if they want to have German citizenship.

According to Germany, the country has a low naturalisation rate, with over 12 million out of its 84.4 million residents lacking German citizenship. Approximately 5.3 million of these individuals have been residing in Germany for at least a decade.

The reported naturalisation rate in Germany is significantly lower than the average observed in the European Union.

Olaf Scholz’s adviser Joerg Kukies to be Germany’s finance minister: Report

German police on Tuesday arrested eight suspected members of a far-right militant group that had trained for what they expected would be the collapse of state order, prosecutors said.

Hundreds of police in pre-dawn raids swooped on 20 locations linked to the group "Saxonian Separatists" in formerly communist eastern Germany and neighbouring Poland, with locations also searched in Austria.

Federal prosecutors said the operation targeted "a militant group of 15 to 20 individuals whose ideology is characterised by racist, anti-Semitic and partially apocalyptic ideas".

The prosecutors said the group's members, mostly young men, strongly rejected Germany's liberal democratic order and believed the government was nearing "collapse" on an unspecified "Day X".

In anticipation of that day, the militants had planned to take control of parts of their state of Saxony and potentially other east German regions.

Their plan was "to establish governmental and societal structures inspired by National Socialism" (Nazism) &nbsp;that would have sought to target "unwanted groups of people by means of ethnic cleansing".

They had conducted paramilitary training in combat gear, with a focus on "urban warfare and firearms handling" as well as marching and patrolling.

Authorities partially named the suspects, all German nationals, as alleged ringleader Joerg S. and members Kurt H., Karl K., Kevin M., Hans-Georg P., Kevin R., Joern S. and Norman T.

They were arrested in and near the cities of Leipzig and Dresden, with Joerg S., 23, detained in Poland.

Prosecutors said raids on Tuesday also targeted the premises of individuals not considered suspects in Austria, including the capital Vienna.

<h2>'Longing for Day X'</h2>

News magazine Der Spiegel wrote that one of the suspects, Kurt H., is a member of the youth wing of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), and that he suffered a gunshot wound during the arrest.

Spiegel, citing unnamed security sources, said that he had reached for a rifle and police commandos fired two "warning shots".&nbsp;

Kurt H. collapsed with a shot wound to the jaw which was not life-threatening, and it remained unclear whether the bullet was discharged by a police gun or his own rifle, the report said.

The anti-immigration AfD is especially popular in the east of Germany and made strong gains in regional elections in the states of Thuringia and Brandenburg in September.

Prosecutors said the group "Saxonian Separatists", with the initials SS like those of Adolf Hitler's paramilitary organisation the Schutzstaffel, was founded about four years ago and that its members had since then made "continuous preparations for the perceived inevitable and violent change of government".

The group had procured camouflage fatigues, combat helmets, gas masks and bullet-proof vests, prosecutors said in a statement.

Some of those arrested were known to security services as members of the New Right, right-wing extremist parties or the neo-Nazi scene, said Thomas Haldenwang, head of the domestic security service the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Some of the right-wing extremists are "very young" and linked to groups that are active online and "glorify the actions of well-known right-wing terrorists" such as Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, he said.

More than 450 law enforcement personnel joined the operation, including state and federal police officers and commandos, in cooperation with the domestic intelligence service.

The men arrested later faced the Federal Court of Justice in the western city of Karlsruhe to keep them in pre-trial detention.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the security services had "thwarted at an early stage militant plans for a coup by right-wing terrorists who were longing for a Day X to attack people and the state with armed force".

Germany has dismantled several far-right cells in recent years, including a bizarre plot led by an aristocrat who has since been on trial&nbsp;for planning a coup.

Their plan allegedly drew inspiration from the global QAnon movement and the German Reichsbuerger (Citizens of the Reich), which reject the legitimacy of the modern German republic.

According to Germany's intelligence services, the country's number of right-wing extremists considered potentially violent rose to 14,500 last year.

Germany has dismantled several far-right cells in recent years, including a bizarre plot led by an aristocrat who has since been on trial for planning a coup. Germany closes Iranian consulates after execution of dual national

Iran on Monday reportedly executed 69-year-old German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd after years in captivity, media in the Islamic Republic said, sparking outrage in Germany and beyond.

Berlin warned of "serious consequences" for Iran's "inhumane regime", while a Norway-based human rights group labelled the execution the "extrajudicial killing of a hostage".

Sharmahd, a German citizen of Iranian descent and a US resident, was seized by Iranian authorities in 2020 while travelling through the United Arab Emirates, according to his family.

Iran, which does not recognise dual citizenship, announced his arrest after a "complex operation", without specifying how, where or when he was seized.
