Germany’s Federal government has released its second homelessness report, revealing a significant rise in the number of homeless individuals. As of early 2024, 531,600 people are reported to be without permanent shelter, nearly double the 263,000 recorded in the 2022 report.

Germany has been declared the 'world champions of sick leave' as workers in the country are taking an average of 20 sick days per year. This is higher than the EU (European Union) average of eight days, affecting Germany&rsquo;s work ethic and economy.&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Rising trend of sick leaves: Economic constraints in Germany&nbsp;</h2>
The soaring number of sick leaves has been linked to cases of cold and COVID, according to health insurance DAK. The sheer volume of sick days is putting a huge toll on the economy of the country and affecting businesses paying the price of the employee&rsquo;s absence.&nbsp;
According to a report, the total cost of illness leaves reached &euro;77 billion in wages. When adding &euro;19 billion spent by health insurers, this totals 6% of Germany's national social spending.
The ongoing issue with such leave is one sign of Germany&rsquo;s larger economic struggles. The country&rsquo;s once-thriving economy has shrunk in recent months, with major companies such as Volkswagen announcing job cuts for the first time in history.&nbsp; In December, the company announced the elimination plans of the workforce due to economic strain.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-no-more-9-to-5-employees-are-now-unofficially-changing-work-hours-to-10-to-4-data-shows-758369" rel="dofollow">No more 9 to 5: Employees are now unofficially changing work hours to 10 to 4, data shows</a>

The CEO of Allianz SE, Oliver B&auml;te, shared his thoughts raising concern about the financial impact of this uncanny trend and offered a solution. He proposed the idea of bringing back a policy that had been eliminated in 1970 where workers would lose pay on the first day of sickness unless they provided a doctor&rsquo;s note.
In a statement to German media, he said that countries like Switzerland and Denmark have managed to keep their economies strong by working longer hours.&nbsp;B&auml;te&rsquo;s proposal has been met with support from some business leaders, who see it as a necessary step to curb the rising costs associated with sick leave.
This &lsquo;waiting day&rsquo; system is still used in countries like Spain and Greece. B&auml;te believes this change could save Germany up to &euro;40 billion each year.

The idea has triggered an outrage among trade unions and some political parties. Dennis Radtke, a member of the European Parliament for the center-right, opposed the idea of it being a "class war from above."&nbsp;

This is not the first time Musk has faced criticism from Germany over his political comments. He previously wrote on X that &ldquo;only the AfD can save Germany,&rdquo; drawing widespread criticism. At the time, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called Musk&rsquo;s actions &ldquo;undignified and problematic,&rdquo; adding that they might equate election interference.
Last month, Musk even called Chancellor Olaf Scholz a &ldquo;fool&rdquo; on X. He defended his involvement in German politics by citing his &ldquo;significant investments&rdquo; in the country.
The AfD is currently polling in second place in the opinion polls. A strong performance by the AfD in the election could complicate coalition-building, as mainstream parties have ruled out working with the AfD at either state or federal levels.

Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia had warned Germany about Taleb A, the man suspected of a deadly car attack at Germany's Christmas market, Reuters reported citing a Saudi source.
A man on Friday (Dec 20) drove a car into the Christmas market in Germany's eastern city of Magdeburg, killing at least five, including a toddler, and injuring more than 200.
The source said that Saudi Arabia warned the German authorities about the attacker after he posted extremist views on his personal X account, threatening peace and security.
The suspect had sympathised with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, local magazine, Der Spiegel reported. However, the magazine did not specify from where it got the information.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency refused to comment on the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, Germany's FAZ newspaper said that it interviewed the suspect in 2019, and described him as an anti-Islam activist.
"People like me, who have an Islamic background but are no longer believers, are met with neither understanding nor tolerance by Muslims here," he said, adding, "I am history's most aggressive critic of Islam. If you don't believe me, ask the Arabs."
Earlier today, German police arrested a Saudi man for the attack. The attacker, identified by German media by a partial name Taleb A., is a 50-year-old doctor of psychiatry from Saudi Arabia, who has been living in Germany since 2006.
Saudi Arabia has requested the extradition of the suspect, however, Germany has not responded yet, according to Saudi Arabian security sources.

<h2>German Chancellor 'very worried'</h2>
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed concerns over the attack, saying that he was "very worried" for the severely injured. He further called it a "terrible attack".
“There is no more peaceful, more joyous place in Germany than Christmas markets when people come together ahead of the Christmas festival and spend some time together, drink mulled wine, have a sausage together to relax together,” Scholz told reporters in Magdeburg on Saturday.
“What for a terrible act is that to injure and to kill so many people with such brutality," he said, adding, “We have meanwhile found out that over 200 people were injured. Five have died until now.”
Scholz further stressed that nearly 40 are "severely injured" and that "we are worried for them".
