Chancellor Friedrich Merz vows to stay on as exit polls signal major poll setback

Germany's far-right opposition AfD party on Friday (September 11) filed a criminal complaint against Chancellor Friedrich Merz over his accusation that the party is responsible for "ethnic cleansing," according to German media reports. Stephan Brandner, parliamentary secretary of the AfD's Bundestag group, called Merz's statement "criminal in nature" and "completely unacceptable." However, he added that his party remains "firmly on the ground of the constitution." The development unfolded after Merz on Wednesday (September 9), accused the party of promoting ethnic cleansing during a heated parliamentary exchange, drawing loud protest from the opposition party's ranks. "The word 'remigration' is nothing other than a synonym for ethnic cleansing," Merz said of the AfD's flagship slogan. "Remigration is nothing other than ethnic cleansing by skin colour and origin." The AfD maintains that "remigration" simply means deporting foreign criminals and those who entered Germany illegally. However, some far-right figures have also utilised the term to refer to deporting migrants and even German citizens of foreign origin.&nbsp; Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/brics-summit-2026-egypt-s-delegation-stay-in-saket-hotel-complicates-delhi-police-plans-check-roads-diversions-and-traffic-restrictions-1789119655269">BRICS Summit 2026: Egypt delegation's stay in Saket hotel complicates Delhi Police plans. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday (April 27) raised strong concerns over the trajectory of the Iran war, questioning Washington’s strategy and warning that Tehran appears more resilient than earlier assessments, even as tensions intensify around the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.&nbsp;Speaking in North Rhine-Westphalia, Merz said he was unable to identify a clear exit strategy being pursued by the United States, adding that the situation was becoming increasingly complex and difficult to manage.&nbsp;"The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result," he said during an interaction with students.&nbsp;"An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards. India and Germany's defence partnership took a significant step forward during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's key visit to India on 12-13 January 2026, marking his first trip to Asia since assuming office. The visit, coinciding with celebrations of 75 years of diplomatic relations and building on 25 years of the Strategic Partnership, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz endorse deeper military and industrial ties. The leaders signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strengthening the Bilateral Defence Industrial Cooperation, aiming to shift from episodic arms sales to long-term co-development, technology transfer, and co-production.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-anti-trump-alliances-emerging-netizens-react-as-pm-modi-shares-kite-festival-moments-with-german-chancellor-merz-1768290620281">'Anti-Trump alliances emerging': Netizens react to Modi-Merz festival moments</a>In their joint statement, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz "endorsed the commitment of both sides to deepen military-to-military cooperation through joint exercises, training and exchanges of senior officials, and noted with satisfaction regular reciprocal port calls by the Naval ships of both countries."The statement highlighted specific areas of progress: "Both Leaders lauded the continuing cooperation in submarines, obstacle avoidance system for helicopters and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS)" and "looked forward to enhanced defence industrial collaboration by building a deepened relationship based on shared goals and complementarity of strength, namely skilled workforce and competitive costs from India and high technologies and investment from Germany."This convergence reflects India's push for strategic autonomy through diversified suppliers. Germany provides access to cutting-edge European technologies without the entanglements of formal alliances, positioning Berlin as a reliable partner amid New Delhi's efforts to reduce reliance on traditional sources.A key example is the Helicopter Obstacle Avoidance System (OAS), which addresses critical survivability gaps in Indian rotary-wing aviation. These software-driven, safety-critical systems enable safer low-level, night, and degraded-visibility operations in challenging terrains like the Himalayas. The technology represents an ideal test case for trust-based transfer, as it is not merely an add-on but integral to mission success. This intent materialised earlier with a landmark agreement between India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and German firm HENSOLDT at the Dubai Air Show in November 2025.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pm-modi-german-chancellor-merz-share-car-ride-vow-to-deepen-strategic-ties-india-germany-european-union-car-ride-1768216724311">PM Modi, German Chancellor Merz share car ride; vow to deepen strategic ties</a>The deal includes technology transfer, manufacturing rights, and integration of the advanced OAS on Indian helicopter platforms, paving the way for indigenous capability building and potential exports. The developments signal a maturing partnership, with Germany showing greater openness to defence engagement beyond NATO frameworks.

The leaders signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strengthening the Bilateral Defence Industrial Cooperation, aiming to shift from episodic arms sales to long-term co-development, technology transfer, and co-production. Also read | 'Anti-Trump alliances emerging': Netizens react to Modi-Merz festival moments In their joint statement, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz "endorsed the commitment of both sides to deepen military-to-military cooperation through joint exercises, training and exchanges of senior officials, and noted with satisfaction regular reciprocal port calls by the Naval ships of both countries." The statement highlighted specific areas of progress: "Both Leaders lauded the continuing cooperation in submarines, obstacle avoidance system for helicopters and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS)" and "looked forward to enhanced defence industrial collaboration by building a deepened relationship based on shared goals and complementarity of strength, namely skilled workforce and competitive costs from India and high technologies and investment from Germany." This convergence reflects India's push for strategic autonomy through diversified suppliers. Germany provides access to cutting-edge European technologies without the entanglements of formal alliances, positioning Berlin as a reliable partner amid New Delhi's efforts to reduce reliance on traditional sources. A key example is the Helicopter Obstacle Avoidance System (OAS), which addresses critical survivability gaps in Indian rotary-wing aviation. These software-driven, safety-critical systems enable safer low-level, night, and degraded-visibility operations in challenging terrains like the Himalayas. The technology represents an ideal test case for trust-based transfer, as it is not merely an add-on but integral to mission success. This intent materialised earlier with a landmark agreement between India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and German firm HENSOLDT at the Dubai Air Show in November 2025. The developments signal a maturing partnership, with Germany showing greater openness to defence engagement beyond NATO frameworks.
