<p>As Kashmir is hosting the G20 summit for the first time ever, the Department of Handicraft in the Indian Union Territory has put up an exhibition at the G20 meeting venue in Srinagar. The government says it’s an opportunity for the artisans and craftsmen of the Kashmir Valley to showcase their talent at the international level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dozens of stalls have been put up at the Sheri Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) lawns in Srinagar showcasing Kashmiri crafts such as Pashmina shawls, silk carpets, wood carving, paper mache, copper utensils and organic foods. Not only has the Department of Handicraft put up the stalls but also brought in artisans of various arts to demonstrate the making of these products in front of the delegates visiting the Valley.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“For the artisan community of the Kashmir Valley, It's a proud moment for all of us. These events open the international market for us. We hope that our crafts of Kashmir get highlighted in events like these. The government should organise much more events like these in the Valley. It's a plus point for all Kashmiri craft. Holding G20 here and giving us an opportunity to display our craft, we will reach every country around the world,” said Shahnawaz Ahmad, Silk Carpet Expert.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The artisans feel that international events like these need to be organised every month which will help the craftsmen to sell the products to international customers and holding such events would draw attention from across the world to the local crafts of Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are hopeful and extremely lucky that G20 is being organised here. People from all across the world are coming to the Valley, and our art would be on display for them. We are hopeful that our art and craft will impress them, and will help us market our products internationally. It will help with a lot of employment in the valley. It will benefit us a lot and I am hopeful we will get a lot of promotion by this event,"&nbsp;said Maqbool Jan, papier mache artist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The skill development department of the Kashmir Valley has over seven lakh women artisans associated with it. A dozen stalls have been put up at the SKICC venue by these women,&nbsp;including the women from rural areas of the Valley. The department sees this as an opportunity for these women to sell their products to international buyers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is for the first time, this kind of event is happening in India since 1947, and this is also a big opportunity for the women who are associated with us. We have around seven lakh women associated with our mission, they will be encouraged by this kind of event and to showcase their products. This will give the women a feel of how to sell their products via e-commerce and this event will help them market the products. We have 15 women here who will share their experiences and will inspire other women too,"&nbsp;said Riyaz Beg, Mission Director, Rural Livelihood Mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The University of Kashmir will host Youth 20 consultation meeting on May 11. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof Neelofer Khan&nbsp;announced that the University of Kashmir is hosting the Youth 20 consultation meeting on May 11 at its Central Campus in Hazratbal.</p>

<p>The theme of the meeting will be "Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life", and it will be held under the aegis of India’s G20 presidency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The consultations would provide a platform for open discussions, presentations and interactive sessions focused on addressing the challenges faced by young people and formulating a roadmap for their development. Based on the inputs from these discussions, a communiqué will be prepared as an outcome document for the Youth 20 Summit, 2023. The University has got a historic opportunity to host the meeting and all arrangements have been put in place to ensure its great success," said Neelofar Khan, VC, Kashmir University.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"To make the event more inclusive and result-oriented, participants have been invited from universities across the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. It is pertinent to mention that the event will see four panel discussions on important aspects related to the theme," said the VC. "The theme for the meeting has been deliberately chosen in view of its high importance for the country in general and the youth in particular. And the meeting is an opportunity for the youth to come forward and share their ideas on how they could contribute to addressing and mitigating the impacts of climate change," she added.&nbsp;</p>

The theme of the meeting will be "Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life", and it will be held under the aegis of India’s G20 presidency. "The consultations would provide a platform for open discussions, presentations and interactive sessions focused on addressing the challenges faced by young people and formulating a roadmap for their development. Based on the inputs from these discussions, a communiqué will be prepared as an outcome document for the Youth 20 Summit, 2023. The University has got a historic opportunity to host the meeting and all arrangements have been put in place to ensure its great success," said Neelofar Khan, VC, Kashmir University. It is pertinent to mention that the event will see four panel discussions on important aspects related to the theme," said the VC. "The theme for the meeting has been deliberately chosen in view of its high importance for the country in general and the youth in particular. And the meeting is an opportunity for the youth to come forward and share their ideas on how they could contribute to addressing and mitigating the impacts of climate change," she added. <p>Srinagar is going to host G20 meetings by the end of this month and the venue for the meetings would be Sheri Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). Security has been beefed up around the convention centre already. With the increase in the number of police and paramilitary forces around the centre, everyday search and anti-mining drills are being done by the forces around the centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ADGP Kashmir Police, Vijay Kumar chaired a joint meeting with the officers of police, intelligence agencies and security forces at Police Control Room Kashmir Srinagar in which discussions were made regarding overall security arrangements to be adopted for safe and smooth conduct of the upcoming G20 being hosted at Srinagar.</p>

<p>The meeting was attended by GOC Kilo Force Maj Gen Mohit Seth, IG CRPF Kashmir Ops Sector Shri Manvinder Singh Bhatia, IG BSF Kashmir Frontier Shri Ashok Yadav, Joint Director SIB Shri Dipankar Trivedi and other high-ranking officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the meeting, the ADGP Kashmir reviewed the security arrangements and emphasised the need for co-ordinated efforts to ensure foolproof security for the summit. The officials also discussed the deployment of security personnel, traffic management, and crowd control measures to be adopted for the peaceful conduct of the summit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>''We emphasised the need to be vigilant and take pre-emptive measures to prevent any untoward incident during the summit. We have advised that additional security measures should be placed at the vulnerable locations to avoid any untoward incident during the G20 summit, '' said ADGP Kashmir Police, Vijay Kumar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the meeting, a special focus on the emerging threat of VBIEDs and other modes of potential terror attacks including potential suicide attacks, standoff fire and grenade attacks were discussed in detail and counter-measures to counter these terror threats were also discussed. ADGP Kashmir instructed all district SSPs to focus on busting terror modules by apprehending terrorist associates and generating preventive intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the valley. Besides, all SSPs were instructed to conduct anti-terrorist operations on specific inputs. The officials discussed the deployment of additional security forces and use of modern technology to secure the venues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Department of Tourism, Kashmir hosted a Model G20 Summit in Srinagar on Friday (April 28). The summit brought together over 60 participants from universities across J&amp;K including Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Central University of Kashmir (CUK), Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) and University of Kashmir (KU).</p>

<p>The opening ceremony of the event was presided over by Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary to the Government of Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Department of Tourism and Culture. He expressed his belief that this event would serve as a stepping stone for the younger generation, opening more opportunities for them in the future.</p>

This is a great opportunity also for us to showcase Jammu and Kashmir and various tourism products of J&amp;K to a global audience. It gives us an opportunity to present J&amp;K as one the topmost tourist destinations across the world," said Shah.</p>

<p>During the event, the students actively participated in deliberations and negotiations while representing their respective G20 countries. The discussions primarily focused on priorities in the tourism sector, such as sustainable tourism practices and gender equity &amp; women in tourism.</p>

<p>"This model G20 event is like a rehearsal to the main event happening here next month. We had students from various institutions, and we are participating in this event as delegates and we have to discuss about tourism and sustainable tourism, women in tourism and effective promotion of tourism. We discussed the issues and it's going to be a major event in Jammu and Kashmir. It's going to open new avenues for us and people are going to perceive us differently. It's going to be a boon for the tourism sector," said Sadat Hussain, Student.</p>

<p>The Model G20 Summit served as a valuable platform for the participants to enhance their understanding of the workings of G20 and the issues it addresses. It provided a unique opportunity for the participants to hone their negotiation and diplomacy skills, which are essential in today's globalised world.</p>
