The French government released an official decree on Sunday (July 9) announcing a ban on the sale, possession and transport of fireworks over the July 14 weekend. France bans the sale of fireworks for Bastille Day celebration after riots

A week after violent riots in Paris were sparked by the assassination of a teenager in a suburb, hundreds of protesters disobeyed a city-wide ban on marches to decry police brutality and racial profiling. They assembled in downtown Paris for a memorial rally.

France: Hundreds stage protests in Paris against police violence

According to reports, hundreds defied a police ban, on Saturday (July 8) to hold a march against violence by the country’s police which was supposed to take place in central Paris to honour the 24-year-old Black man who died in police custody in 2016. This comes days after France was rocked by six nights of riots and unrest over the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by a police officer at a traffic stop.

Why did the French officials ban Paris march?

A report by Reuters said that hundreds of protesters defied the ban on a march for Adama Traore. The decision to ban the planned protest called by the victim Traore’s family on Saturday in central Paris’ Place de la Republique was announced by the French capital city’s police department which cited risks to public order and “context of tensions”.

Subsequently, the crowd gathered at Place de la Republique was dispersed by the police and seen marching towards Boulevard Magenta instead, where several hundred people were reportedly marching peacefully.

This comes after the initial march was to take place in Beaumont-sur-Oise, another Paris suburb, where Traore died in 2016. The ban was upheld by a French court, on Friday, which prompted the organisers to change the location of the march to central Paris instead.

The head of the Paris police, Laurent Nuñez, said that the march would “likely to attract radical elements with a view to committing acts of violence; the reasons which led the prefect of Val-d’Oise to ban the gathering.”

France riots: MPs call on government to ban video-sharing platform TikTok

Days after violence erupted in France the French Senate has now passed a controversial law granting a sweeping power to the police authority. This comes after the country was engulfed in riots after the police fatally shot a teenager in a Paris suburb. According to reports French police can now spy on suspects by remotely activating cameras microphones and the GPS location system of phone devices and can remotely activate it to record images as well as sound.

France burns, Macron fails

After a series of protests chaos and violence across France last week the French authorities are discussing increasing the powers of the police in fact, the French lawmakers have agreed to enable the French police to spy on suspects through their phones. The proposed plan is part of a wider Justice Reform Bill and the measure will cover laptops cars cameras microphones GPS and other connected devices. It will provide French security officials with the geolocation of the suspects.

French activists: Surveillance infringes on privacy

In what appears to be a major plot point of George Orwell's critically acclaimed "1984" novel, the French government has passed a law that allows police to spy on people through their phones.

As part of a wider justice reform bill, the French lawmakers in the National Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that lets police surveil suspects by remotely activating cameras, microphones and GPS location systems on their phones and other devices.

A few caveats, however, have been added to stop the government from becoming a full-blown authoritarian state. To surveil any suspect, a judge will have to approve the use of special powers and the total duration of surveillance cannot exceed six months. Moreover, the said powers cannot be used against journalists, lawyers, MPs and other "sensitive professions".

Notably, the Senate had green-lit the provisions of the justice bill last month. However, after the new amendments were introduced on Wednesday, the proposal will be sent back for approval before it can become law.

French minister denies 1984 links

Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti shot down comparisons with the Orwell novel saying the law was aimed at saving people's lives.

"We're far away from the totalitarianism of '1984'," said Dupond-Moretti adding, "People's lives will be saved by the law."

Although the minister claims that the law and its provision will only be applied to a 'dozen cases a year', the opposition parties and rights groups are wary that the Macron government is setting up a smokescreen for a 'surveillance state'.

Calling the proposal part of a "slide into heavy-handed security", digital rights group La Quadrature du Net said the provisions "raise serious concerns over infringements of fundamental liberties".

The group argued that police will be utilising the security vulnerabilities to target the dissidents. Moreover, it might use security holes to its advantage, instead of telling manufacturers how to patch those holes.

Timing of the bill

Watch | Protests and violence in France as police kills a driver in Nanterre × French minister denies 1984 links Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti shot down comparisons with the Orwell novel saying the law was aimed at saving people's lives. "We're far away from the totalitarianism of '1984'," said Dupond-Moretti adding, "People's lives will be saved by the law." Although the minister claims that the law and its provision will only be applied to a 'dozen cases a year', the opposition parties and rights groups are wary that the Macron government is setting up a smokescreen for a 'surveillance state'. France: Donations for policeman who shot dead teenager in Paris suburb halted

A campaign, that was initiated to collect funds for the family of the French police officer, who shot dead 17-year-old, Nahel, topped 1.47 million euros ($1.6 million) on Tuesday, exceeding the donations made to the teenager's family, sparking outrage among many French nationals.

The crowdfunding, which was launched on the US platform GoFundMe by French far-right media personality Jean Messiha who supported Eric Zemmour's 2022 presidential run, received more than 72,000 private donations.

"This police officer is the victim of a national witch-hunt and it is a disgrace," Messiha tweeted.

"The fact that it was someone close to the far right who launched this fund does not, without doubt, help to calm things down," said French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

As per news agency Reuters reports, the leftwing politicians deemed the fundraiser 'shameful', whereas the far right defended the police force, saying that in the low-income suburbs of French cities, police are the daily target of violence.

For far-right national rally party Jordan Bardella this crowdfunding has received a lot of support because "the French don't mix up one man's mistake with the situation of his family".

The fundraising pledges for Nahel's family stood at 360,000 euros.

Macron in meeting of mayors says 'peak' of riots has passed

French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting of mayors on Tuesday said the peak of riots had passed. However, he added he was still cautious to call an end to the violence.

"Is it a permanent return to calm? I will be cautious, but the peak that we've seen in previous days has passed," Macron said, according to a report by news agency AFP.

Macron had met with hundreds of French officials on Tuesday to get to the depth of the reason behind the country's descent into violence after a teenager was shot dead by the police in the Paris suburb of Nanterre for fleeing a traffic check.

The meeting with 302 mayors of towns where rioting took place came after authorities reported a much calmer night across the country.

"We all want a lasting, republican order," Macron said. "That's the absolute priority."

At the gathering of mayors, Macron was hoping to "start the painstaking, long-term work needed to understand the deeper reasons that led to these events", an official at the president's office said.

Macron pitched the idea of handing out quick-fire fines to the parents of children caught for destruction or theft.

"With the first crime, we need to find a way of sanctioning the families financially and easily," he said, according to comments reported by the Parisien newspaper.

Around 150 people were arrested overnight across France in connection with the violent protests that broke out since the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by a police officer at a traffic stop, said the interior ministry, on Monday (July 3). Meanwhile, France’s mayors called on the public and elected officials to hold a rally against the nearly week-long riots.

The government deployed up to 45,000 police officers onto the streets across the country overnight on Sunday to quell the unrest. The unrest follows the fatal shooting of Nahel, a 17-year-old teenager of North African descent, on Tuesday, by a police officer at a traffic stop.

In a statement on Monday, an association of the country’s mayors said that “everywhere in France is the scene of serious unrest, which targets republican symbols with extreme violence.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, expressed concerns about Russia's intentions to carry out "dangerous provocations" at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Moscow's control.

The plant, Europe's largest, has been a subject of ongoing safety concerns since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has been ongoing for over a year now. Over the weekend, Zelensky told media personnel in Kyiv, "There is a serious threat. Russia is technically ready to provoke a local explosion at the plant, which could lead to the release of dangerous substances into the air."

It said that the results for searches on tourism accommodation lacked explanations for the prices.

The watchdog also said that the Google Play Store lacked information on the ranking criteria of results, payment information and dispute resolution procedures.

Additionally, the Google Play Store did not allow consumers to publish their reviews of apps in the store, the agency said.

The competition agency further said that Google has since "corrected part of the sanctioned shortcoming".

Responding to the charges, a Google spokesman expressed dissatisfaction with the order saying that the watchdog agency did not take the changes undertaken by the US tech giant into consideration, AFP news agency reported.

“We have always been transparent with our users about how our products work," the spokesman said, adding that it was open to working "constructively" with French and European regulators.

Not the first time

This is the second time that Google’s France unit was fined for providing misleading hotel rankings in its search engine.

In February 2021, Google France was fined 1.1 million euros after a probe found that Google's hotel rankings could be misleading for consumers.

The US tech giant had been applying its own algorithmic system of ratings for hotels via its search engine and on Google Maps.

This came after the French national competition and consumer watchdog DGCCRF initiated a probe in 2019 following a number of complaints by hoteliers against this propriety rating system.

The probe revealed that the tech giant had replaced the standard classification system of the public tourist board (Atout France) with a star rating system powered by its own criteria — and which it had applied to more than 7,500 establishments.

The DGCCRF concluded that Google had engaged in a deceptive business practice — and, with the public prosecutor, it proposed the sanction announced today on Google Ireland (the tech giant’s European HQ) and Google France.
