Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has made a comparison between Marcus Rashford and France superstar Kylian Mbappe. Ten Hag made the rather astonishing comparison at a time when Paris St-Germain (PSG) have shown interest in signing Rashford after the end of his current United contract.

"From the first moment, I recognised huge potential. And now to get out the potential, I believe when Marcus's positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.

"There is Mbappe in this moment, a type like him. But when he (Rashford)'s getting in that position, he's great and you see he's really improved also out of possession," added Ten Hag.

While the Dutch hyped his striker by making the comparison, there have been rumours of Rashford's big-money move to PSG where Mbappe plays.

Last week, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi heaped praises on Rashford and said his club may be on the lookout to avail the services of the 25-year-old.

"He's another player who's amazing and for free? To have Rashford for free, every club will run after him," said Al-Khelaifi

"Maybe summer, why not? If he is a free agent, we can talk to him directly. But we are not going to talk to him now and let him focus on the World Cup. In January, hopefully, we would be interested in talking to him."

Responding to the rumours, the Dutch manager said it was up to Rashford to make a decision to stay in Manchester or leave for Paris.

“He has to make a decision, so we can only show him that Man Utd is the best club to be in," said Ten Hag.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag is willing to trigger a contract extension for Rashford that will allow him to stay at Old Trafford for another one-and-a-half years.

Rashford's current deal expires at the end of the season. Alongside him, other United players such as David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred are also running out of time to sign a new contract. According to transfer experts, if Rashford is not tied down by the end of the winter transfer window, there is a high probability, he may leave United as a free agent.

France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has hit back at the English press for targetting Hugo Lloris and calling the goalkeeper, the 'weak link' of the French team.

France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has hit back at the English press for targetting Hugo Lloris and calling the goalkeeper, the 'weak link' of the French team. "According to the English press, Hugo Lloris was the weakest link on our team. It's bulls***!" Tchouameni was quoted as saying by RMC Sport. "All sorts of things are always said in the press, but the most important thing is to prove ourselves to the group, and he did today. We are really happy to have him on our team," added the Real Madrid player. Prior to the match, several English pundits had taken a crack at Lloris, describing him as the weak point of the team with superstars like Mbappe, Griezzman and Giroud around. During France's 2-1 win over England in the quarterfinal clash, Lloris was called upon to protect his goalpost twice after England received a penalty shout in their favour. Apart from the penalties, Lloris kept France in the game by denying a vicious freekick from Shaw and later pulling off an exceptional save against teenage sensation Jude Bellingham. L'Equipe, a notable French sports publication known for dishing out extremely low scores to players in its ratings handed Lloris its highest match rating (8). Tchouameni scored the opening goal for France via an out-of-the-box long-range effort which caught Jordan Pickford napping. However, after Kane equalised, the defending champions increased the intensity and managed to find the decisive goal in the 78th minute through Olivier Giroud. 'Will not roll red carpet for Mbappe', says England's Kyle Walker ahead of WC clash with France

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has taken a swipe at teams that have paid more attention to political messaging than focusing on football at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“When you go to a World Cup you know you must not lose the first game,” said Wenger during a press conference before adding that teams with World Cup experience such as holders France won their opening matches.

“And the teams as well who were mentally ready, who had the mindset to focus on the competition and not on political demonstrations," he added.

The Frenchman is currently FIFA's head of global football development and his statement might have been targetted at Germany.

The German football team during the team photograph in the match against Japan covered their mouths to protest over the ban of ‘One love armbands’ by FIFA.

The move came after FIFA threatened seven European teams (England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark) with sanctions if they wore the armbands.

After German players covered their mouths, the German FA released a statement saying, “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect.”

“Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard. It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position,” it added.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Arsene Wenger takes a dig at teams more focused on political demonstrations

Olivier Giroud became France's joint all-time top scorer when his double helped the holders start the defence of their World Cup title in style with a 4-1 comeback Group D win against Australia on Tuesday.

Giroud found the net before and after the break to take his tally to 51 goals, matching Thierry Henry's mark, either side of a Kylian Mbappe goal after Adrien Rabiot had levelled following Craig Goodwin's shock early opener.

Les Bleus are the first defending champions to win their opening match since Brazil in 2006, which has already put them in good position to advance from the group phase, something Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and Germany in 2018 failed to do.

France, who lost defender Lucas Hernandez to a knee injury, have three points and lead Tunisia and Denmark by two after they played out a 0-0 draw on Tuesday.

Didier Deschamps's France side, who started the tournament on the back of the disappointment of striker Karim Benzema being ruled out injured last Saturday, next face Denmark on Saturday.

It was not quite the start France were expecting at the Al Janoub stadium.

Goodwin smacked the ball into the roof of the net from Mathew Leckie's cross from the right, leaving Lucas Hernandez holding his right knee after being beaten to the ball after nine minutes.

Hernandez's brother Theo came on as a substitute and France continued to struggle to create space, with only Mbappe threatening on his left flank.

Exhilarating Feel

Australia were much more direct, making the most of Les Bleus's non-existent midfield.

It was, however, Rabiot who levelled in the 27th, leaving his marker behind to head home from Hernandez's cross.

With Mbappe moving more centrally, the Australia defence had one more problem to deal with and that was clear when the Paris St Germain forward's back heel inside the area was collected by Rabiot, who slid the ball across for Giroud to tap in.

They played more freely from then on, with Antoine Griezmann's low shot going just wide and Mbappe skying his attempt over the bar as he raced to meet Griezmann's cross from the right.

Australia kept France on their toes and came close shortly before halftime when Jackson Irvine's header grazed Hugo Lloris's right-hand post after a rebound.

Mbappe caused more chaos early in the second half but could not quite find the breakthrough, until he silenced the Australian fans, who in the first half were shouting 'Who are you?' at him, with a glancing header in the 68th minute.

Three minutes later, Giroud headed home from Mbappe's cross before falling on his back in apparent disbelief and being surrounded by his team mates in a goal celebration that lasted longer than usual, giving an exhilarating feel to France's win.

It took Giroud, who owed his place in the starting lineup to Benzema's absence, 115 international appearances to score his 51 goals, while Henry needed 123 from 1997-2010.

There were more chances for France through Hernandez and Ibrahima Konate but the result was satisfying enough, bearing in mind that in 2002 the defence of their title started with a 1-0 loss to Senegal and was followed by a first-round exit.

England, who are gunning for their second World Cup title, have the most valuable squad in Qatar with Jude Bellingham topping a list of over 800 players, a study has found. Here is a look at how the other major sides compare at the tournament:

TRANSFER VALUE

According to a study conducted by Swiss research group CIES Football Observatory, England's 26-man squad is worth just under 1.5 billion euros ($1.54 billion) in transfer value, with 19-year-old Bellingham valued at 202 million euros. The Borussia Dortmund player enhanced his reputation as one of the world's top young players with a superb goal in England's 6-2 victory over Iran in their tournament opener.

Brazil are second on the list with a transfer value of 1.45 billion euros. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. was their most valuable player at 200 million euros. France were third with an estimated transfer value of 1.34 billion for their squad. Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe was their top player with a value of 185 million euros.

The top three were followed by Spain (1.2 billion euros), Portugal (1.15 billion euros) and Germany (1.02 billion euros). The statistical technique used in the study to build the model was multiple linear regression, with fees paid by clubs as an independent variable.

The sample comprises more than 2,000 transactions of players transferred from clubs in the five major European leagues during the period July, 2012 to November, 2021. The overall value of all the squads at the World Cup was put at 15 billion euros.

INSURABLE VALUE

According to analysis by Lloyd's of London -- backed by the Centre for Economics and Business Research -- teams were ranked based on the collective insurable value of their players.

England's squad topped the list with an estimated insurable value of 3.17 billion pounds ($3.74 billion). They edged out France (2.66 billion pounds) and Brazil (2.56 billion pounds) to claim top spot. Lloyd's said the assessment of insurable value comprises a variety of metrics like wages, sponsorship, age and on-field positions.

Using this methodology to play out the tournament in full, Lloyd's predicted that England -- champions in 1966 -- will finish top of Group B in Qatar and seal knockout wins over Senegal, France, Spain and Brazil. Bellingham was rated the most insurable player, followed by Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

The overall value of all the squads at the World Cup was put at 15 billion euros. INSURABLE VALUE According to analysis by Lloyd's of London -- backed by the Centre for Economics and Business Research -- teams were ranked based on the collective insurable value of their players. ($1 = 0.9761 euros) ($1 = 0.8482 pounds)

Here is a look at the top five contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2022 title:

Brazil

Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002 but will start favourites this time around considering the quality of their squad.

Argentina

Lionel Messi will be hoping to sign off on a high if this proves to be his last World Cup. It will not only be his teammates who will be willing to give their all to give the Argentine legend the farewell he deserves, but millions across the world will be hoping for Messi to add the elusive World Cup to his trophy cabinet.

Argentina's recent form has been brilliant and they had into the World Cup as the reigning Copa America champions. They have a solid defence and an attack comprising the likes of Messi, Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala among others. They have enough firepower in their team to go the distance this time around.

France

Defending champions France will once again head into the tournament as overwhelming favourites this year. Didier Deschamps' men will be hoping to become the third team after Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958,1962) to win successive World Cup titles. They have the majority of the players from the 2018 World Cup-winning team still at their disposal and will be gunning for glory in Qatar.

Though France suffered a huge blow on the eve of the World Cup losing Karim Benzema out to injury, Deschamps still believes his team has what it takes to defend the title. In a statement, he said, "I am extremely sad for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective. Despite this new blow for the French team, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to meet the huge challenge that awaits us."

Netherlands

The Netherlands didn't enjoy the best of campaigns in the 2018 World Cup but they have since managed to revamp their squad under manager Louis Van Gal and will be looking to go the distance. The Dutch have always been one of the strong teams at the World Cups over the years and it's no different this time around.

While they have a leader at the back in Virgil Van Dijk, who remains one of the best defenders in the world despite his struggles at Liverpool this season, their attack comprising of the likes of Cody Gakpo, Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay is capable of changing games on their own. With the brain of Frenkie de Jong in the midfield, the Netherlands will be hoping to shine in Qatar this year.

Portugal

Portugal might not be clear favourites but can't be written off considering the amount of talent and experience in their squad. While an ageing Cristiano Ronaldo might not produce similar numbers as he was doing before, the legendary forward still has the hunger to win it all for his team.

Portugal are bursting with potential and promise with the likes of Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix among others in their ranks. With Pepe still there at the back and the likes of Ruben Dias and Diogo Dalot adding much-needed young blood to their defence, Portugal will be fancying their chances of winning the ultimate trophy.

Playing for Real Madrid for over a decade now, Benzema has earned quite a name for himself. Big blow to France as Karim Benzema ruled out of FIFA World Cup due to injury

Olivier Giroud was named in France's provisional squad for the Qatar World Cup as coach Didier Deschamps unveiled a 25-man group on Wednesday amid injury concerns for the defending champions.

The experienced striker, recalled in March after a nine-month hiatus following the team's early Euro 2021 exit, has been in good form for AC Milan and France and is two goals shy of Thierry Henry's all-time national scoring record of 51 goals.

"He knows where he stands. He knows what my position is. It's better for the French team that he is with us," said Deschamps, who will have to trim his squad to 23 by Monday.

Several players have been struggling with injuries, including Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema, Paris St Germain centre back Presnel Kimpembe and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane.

"I know he (Benzema) will do everything to be at 100 percent in time," said Deschamps.

With Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kante injured and ruled out of the tournament ahead of the squad announcement, Aurelien Tchouameni, Adrien Rabiot and Eduardo Camavinga were among the six midfielders named.

Up front, Kylian Mbappe was named along with Giroud, Benzema, Kingsley Coman, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Christopher Nkunku.

In defence, Deschamps omitted the in-form Jonathan Clauss, an indication that he might opt for a four-man set-up at the back as the Olympique de Marseille player is a pure wing back, ideally suited for a 3-5-2 formation.

Deschamps surprisingly omitted Lucas Digne and Ferland Mendy, leaving the squad short of left backs, while AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan was left out because of a leg muscle injury.

France will be in Group D in Qatar with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.

They start their campaign against Australia on Nov. 22 at the Al Janoub Stadium.

"I made a few players unhappy tonight and 25 are super happy, but I know that as soon as we meet up they will all want to be in the starting 11," said Deschamps, who hopes France will be the first nation to retain the World Cup title since Brazil in 1962, despite a dismal Nations League campaign.

"I don't care about bad statistics. We're not in the best position but we know what we are capable of. However, let's first go through the first round before setting any goals."

Olivier Giroud makes the cut as France announce provisional squad for FIFA World Cup 2022

France midfielder Paul Pogba will miss their World Cup title defence after failing to recover from knee surgery in time for next month's tournament in Qatar, his agent said on Monday.

Pogba had an operation on a damaged meniscus in September but his agent said that, following a medical review, he would not be able to return to the Juventus squad or join up with France before the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 World Cup.

"Following yesterday and today's medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to inform (you that) Paul Pogba will still need recovery time from his surgery," his agent Rafaela Pimenta said.

"For this reason, Paul will not be able to join the Juventus squad before the World Cup break nor the French national team in Qatar. If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow."

Brazil's national team coach currently finds himself in a feud with star forward Kylian Mbappe as he rejected the Frenchman's assessment of South American football, in which he claimed that the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup were much easier for teams from that part of the world due to a lack of quality competition as teams are not as advanced as those in Europe.

In a recent interaction with the media, Tite dismissed these claims, declaring that the matches between South American teams are much more difficult compared to those between European countries.

"Maybe [Mbappe] is talking about these Nations League clashes or European friendlies, but not World Cup qualifiers. We don't have, with all due respect, Azerbaijan to play. We don't have anyone that gives you a break. The qualifiers here have a much higher degree of difficulty than the group stage [of European qualifying]."

It is interesting to note that Tite is not the only one who seemingly took offence or disagreed with Mbappe's statements regarding the quality of football being played in South Africa. The Frenchman's Paris Saint-Germain teammate and Argentine footballing icon Lionel Messi also offered his two cents on the same.

When we came back from a qualifying (match), we told them, 'You don't know how difficult it would be for you to qualify for the World Cup if you had to go there, at the altitude, the head, Venezuela'..." said Lionel Messi in a previous media interaction.

Kylian Mbappe, who is already a world champion with France, is looking to bolster his country's prospects of bagging the most coveted trophy in international football in the world. Should France lay claim to the title in Qatar, it will successfully become the first country to defend its FIFA World Cup title in almost 60 years after Brazil.

'No one gives a break'- Brazil boss slams Kylian Mbappe for claiming competition in the Americas is bleak

Holders France ran riot to reach the 2022 World Cup finals with a match to spare after four goals from Kylian Mbappe helped them to an 8-0 home demolition of Kazakhstan in their Group D qualifier on Saturday.

The result left France top of the group on 15 points from seven games, four ahead of second-placed Finland who they visit in their final match on Tuesday.

Karim Benzema added two goals while Adrien Rabiot and Antoine Griezmann netted one each to cap an impressive performance at the Parc des Princes and seal France`s berth in next year`s 32-nation tournament in Qatar.

Coach Didier Deschamps fielded a 3-4-3 formation with Kingsley Coman deployed as a right wing-back and the attack-minded strategy produced an avalanche of goals as France`s natural talent shone.

The floodgates opened after Mbappe fired France into a sixth-minute lead with a superb first-time shot from a Theo Hernandez assist, with the home side always two gears ahead of the Kazakhs.

Mbappe added the second in the 12th minute with a simple finish into an empty net past a defender after Coman raced down the right, and he completed a first-half hat-trick in the 32nd when he headed home an inch-perfect cross from Coman.

The French never took their foot off the pedal after the break and soon increased their advantage with two quickfire goals from Benzema, who poked in the fourth from a Hernandez assist before Mbappe turned provider.

Rabiot scored his first international goal in the 75th minute as he headed in Griezmann`s corner before the latter netted his 42nd with a penalty, overtaking Michel Platini as his country`s third-highest top scorer.

The brilliant Mbappe put the icing on the cake three minutes before the end with a sublime finish into the bottom-right corner from a fine assist by substitute Moussa Diaby, with the home crowd already in full swing.

Benzema was delighted after combining with Mbappe to devastating effect up front.

"We`ve shown that we are compatible, that we can play together and have fun while scoring, creating goals and playing for the team," Benzema told French television. "I am so happy to have played as I did and above all to have won."

Paul Pogba will miss France's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Finland because of a right thigh injury, the national team said Tuesday.

Video footage on French media showed the Manchester United midfielder pull up after taking a shot in training on Monday, before hobbling away.

Jordan Veretout has come into the squad as a replacement for Pogba, who would likely have started for France in Saturday's home game against Kazakhstan.

The French lead their qualifying group by three points and need one win from their final two games to seal first place and advance automatically to next year's tournament in Qatar.

Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe starred for France as Les Bleus produced another stunning comeback to beat Spain 2-1 and win their first UEFA Nations League title at San Siro in Milan on Sunday.

These sides were both involved in semi-finals that thrilled from the off, but this occasion delivered a more cagey opening 45 minutes. Karim Benzema skipped around Unai Simon but failed to cut the ball back for a team-mate early on while Spain hoarded possession thereafter without threatening. Les Bleus did suffer a setback before the break, though, as Raphael Varane was forced off injured.

The pattern continued until the game exploded into life in the 64th minute when Benzema`s cross was thumped against the underside of the bar by Theo Hernandez. Just 40 seconds later, however, France found themselves behind as Sergio Busquets` through ball was driven across Hugo Lloris by Mikel Oyarzabal. The touchpaper had been lit.

Indeed, La Roja`s joy proved short-lived, because Benzema curled a sensational effort into the far corner from 25 metres within two minutes. The question now was whether Didier Deschamps' men could repeat the trick they had performed against Belgium in the last four when they had come from two behind to win.

The answer arrived on 80 minutes as the reigning world champions completed their second successive fightback. Kylian Mbappe timed his run on to Hernandez's pass to perfection and swept the winner underneath Unai Simon, though it required two fine late saves from Lloris to seal the silverware.

Nations League: France clinch title after Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe shine in comeback against Spain

Spain and France meet at the San Siro stadium on Sunday in the Nations League final after a week in which the competition, in just its second edition, truly delivered on its promise.

UEFA launched the Nations League in 2018 amid much puzzlement about the format and scepticism about whether such a competition was needed or desired given the prominence of the European Championship and World Cup for national teams.
The argument from European soccer's governing body was that replacing friendly matches with competitive games in a mini-group format, with a Final Four tournament at the end, would deliver better entertainment value for fans and more meaningful action for the players.

This week’s games, delivered in a rapid playoff format, certainly provided the quality and excitement fans crave and no-one who witnessed them, either in the venues or watching on television, would have considered they were in anyway 'meaningless' for the players.

In fact, in this concentrated format, the competition delivers the business end of a tournament without all the labouring through a group stage, the travel between multiple venues and the slow burn build-up throughout a month of games.

Spain’s 2-1 win over European champions Italy in Milan on Wednesday, followed by France’s thrilling comeback to beat Belgium 3-2 in Turin a day later, were games which could have graced the latter stages of either of the established international tournaments.

Sunday’s final promises more of the same.

France are world champions and possess a front three that is arguably unmatched in the game — the brilliance and speed of Kylian Mbappe, the deadly finishing of Karim Benzema and the craft and guile of Antoine Griezmann.

Spain have been going through a transition period under coach Luis Enrique, not only in terms of personnel but also style, and against Italy they offered clear evidence of their direction of travel.

Luis Enrique has been willing to turn to the most inexperienced of young players, with Barcelona’s 17-year-old midfielder Gavi enjoying an impressive debut against Italy, having made only three starts for his club Barcelona.

Injuries mean that Spain are without their recognised forwards in Alvaro Morata and Gerard Moreno this week, but in their absence Manchester City’s Ferran Torres, nominally a winger, played in the middle and scored both goals against Italy.

While Spain still treasure possession, they transition through midfield much more quickly than in the past and have a refreshing directness in the wide areas where Mikel Oyarzabal and Pablo Sarabia shone against the Azzurri and another teenager, Yeremi Pino, impressed off the bench.

France coach Didier Deschamps has switched his team to a 3-4-3 formation with attacking wing backs in Benjamin Pavard and Theo Hernandez dangerous throughout against Belgium and it will be fascinating to see who takes control of the wide areas in the final.

At the end of Sunday night, one team will raise the Nations League trophy and while that silverware does not carry the prestige of the European Championship won by Italy in July, it will be hard for anyone to claim it is meaningless.

Nations League: Young Spain face France's forward threat in final

France striker Antoine Griezmann says he would like to see out his playing days in Major League Soccer to realise a long-held desire to live in the United States.

Griezmann, who is set to make his 50th consecutive start for France in Saturday`s Euro 2020 game against Hungary, has long been fascinated with life stateside and is a keen basketball fan, often travelling to NBA games when he has time off.

The striker has had a mostly underwhelming time at Barcelona since joining the Catalans from Atletico Madrid for 120 million euros ($142 million) but said he would like to stay at the club until his contract ends.

"My contract with Barcelona runs until June 2024 and after that I think it will be the right time to go to the United States," Griezmann told French newspaper Le Figaro on Saturday.

"I love that country, that culture, the NBA, and have a desire to discover it more, although I will also have to think about my family."

Griezmann, 30, has never been shy of the limelight and made a 2018 documentary called The Decision about his dilemma on whether to stay at Atletico or join Barcelona, inspired by a programme of the same name on LeBron James` move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to Miami Heat in 2010.

But he said he is tired of constant media attention and believes his and family`s privacy would be respected more in the United States.

"This is also why I love the United States and why I want to go there, because you go unnoticed, which is not the case in France or Spain," he added.

Griezmann`s Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi has also expressed a desire to live in the United States.

Football-France's Griezmann sets sights on MLS in 2024

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema said he's targeting a trophy with France after he was recalled to their provisional Euro 2020 squad following a controversial, six-year international exile.

The prolific star, sidelined by Les Bleus since 2015 over his alleged role in a blackmail plot, missed out on France's 2018 World Cup win and their run to the Euro 2016 final on home soil.

Benzema, 33, told L'Equipe he was "proud" of his call-up, which followed talks with France coach Didier Deschamps earlier this month.

"I want to win a trophy with the French team," he said, adding that he hoped to "bring a little bit extra" to the World Cup-winners.

Benzema, who has 27 goals in 81 international appearances, was last week named as this season's best French foreign-based player by the country's players' association.

He top-scored for Real Madrid with 29 goals this term, passing 20 league goals in all three seasons since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018.

Benzema has repeatedly criticised Deschamps and the French Football Federation for being dropped, citing racism as a factor in his axing from the Euro 2016 squad.

But he said those differences were in the past after his conversation with the coach.

"We said many things. Things that we needed to say for a long time. It was a good explanation, with important words," Benzema said.

He added: "I'm not coming to the French team to overshadow anyone or to take anyone's place. ... I am here to bring what I know."

Football: 'I want a trophy' - Benzema eyes silverware after long France exile

France face a major hurdle if they are to add the European Championship to their World Cup crown after coming out in the same Euro 2020 group as Germany and reigning European champions Portugal in Saturday's draw in Bucharest.

Neither France nor Portugal were in Pot One for the 24-team competition being held in 12 cities across Europe, making them the dangerous teams to avoid for the top seeds.

In the event, they were all put together in a high-calibre Group F alongside Germany, who will play all their group games in Munich. That is where Joachim Loew's team will face France in their first match on June 16 and then Portugal on June 20.

"It is the hardest group, but we must accept it. It means we will have to be ready right away," said France coach Didier Deschamps.

Group F will be completed by one of the winners of the play-offs to be played next March, leaving open several possibilities including Hungary, who will play two games in Budapest should they make it.

France beat Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 on home soil, before slumping in the final against Portugal.

With the four best third-placed sides all going through, it is very possible all three will progress to the last 16, but Loew is in no doubt France -- who followed their 1998 World Cup triumph by winning Euro 2000 -- are the strongest team.

"They are the world champions and have been getting stronger for the last three or four years. They are the group favourites," he said.

Home advantage?

Meanwhile, England were drawn with Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D, with Gareth Southgate's team to play group games at Wembley, which will also host the semi-finals and the July 12 final.

That group will be completed by the team to emerge victorious from Path C in the play-offs -- either Serbia, Norway, Israel and Scotland. The latter have the added incentive of knowing they will play two games in Glasgow in the group stage should they qualify.

England faced the Czechs in qualifying, winning 5-0 at Wembley but suffering their only defeat of the campaign in Prague, losing 2-1 in October.

England will kick off at home to Croatia on June 14 in a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, which was won by the Croatians.

However, should England win their group they will have to play the Group F runners-up, setting up a possible clash with Germany, France or Portugal in the last 16.

Even if they win that, the draw is such that they could end up facing Spain in the quarter-finals.

When asked about the advantage of playing at Wembley, Southgate said: "Obviously eight or 10 teams have the advantage of home group matches, and we have only ever been to one semi-final so that doesn't become an advantage unless we get through two very complicated knockout matches as well. That is a long way down the line."

Southgate famously missed a penalty when England lost to Germany in a shootout at Wembley in the Euro 96 semi-finals, the last time they played a match at home in the tournament.

Wales head to Baku

Italy will face Turkey in Rome in the tournament's opening game on June 12, with Switzerland and Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales also in that section, Group A.

Wales will play two matches in far-flung Baku, starting with Switzerland on June 13. They played there this month, and won, against Azerbaijan in a qualifier.

"Obviously come the championships it will be six or seven months down the line but we know what to expect, the facilities were fantastic there, and I think it's also great for the fans that they have got two games there," said Wales boss Ryan Giggs.

Spain will play Sweden and Poland as well as a play-off winner in Group E, with Luis Enrique's team playing in Bilbao.

Finland will face two hosts, Denmark and Russia, as well as much-fancied Belgium in Group B at what will be their first Euro.

The Netherlands, on the rise after missing Euro 2016 and the last World Cup, face Ukraine and Austria along with another play-off winner in Group C.

That is a long way down the line." Southgate famously missed a penalty when England lost to Germany in a shootout at Wembley in the Euro 96 semi-finals, the last time they played a match at home in the tournament. Wales head to Baku Italy will face Turkey in Rome in the tournament's opening game on June 12, with Switzerland and Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales also in that section, Group A. Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest and Dublin will also host matches after UEFA decided to spread the Euro across the continent to mark the 60th anniversary of the first tournament in 1960.

Heavyweights France, Germany and Portugal drawn together for Euro 2020

Kylian Mbappe answered his critics with a sterling performance as France thrashed Iceland 4-0 in a Euro 2020 qualifier on Monday, showing no signs of irritation this time to continue his meteoric rise.

The striker, whose nerves had been pointed out in the 4-1 win against Moldova last Friday, kept his cool throughout to find the back of the net after the break and set up Samuel Umtiti and Antoine Griezmann for the first and fourth goals.

In Chisinau, the Paris St Germain forward often sought individual solutions and was booked for diving, appearing less threatening than usual.

Coach Didier Deschamps, however, was never worried by a player who has now scored 12 and delivered seven assists in 30 games for France.

"There's no problem with Kylian. He's in the game like all the others. If you had been a football player you would understand," Deschamps said at the Stade de France.

The 20-year-old's goal in Paris on Monday meant he became the youngest player to score 12 international goals since Denmark's Harald Nielsen, then 18, in 1960.

"Mbappe? He is a great player, he proves it everyday. He is a phenomenon and sometimes, when you are one, you want to do more," said midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

"He's got character, it's a good thing. He already has a lot of maturity."

Mbappe is set to gain even more maturity as he benefits from Deschamps's full trust, having been fielded in France's last 28 games, the longest series since Patrick Vieira played 44 successive matches between 1999 and 2002.

Deschamps also noted that Mbappe's relationship with fellow striker Griezmann had improved.

"They are efficient. There is a complementary partnership between Antoine and Kylian, and not just when they have the ball. It's also how they occupy space when they don't have it," the coach said.

Germany defender Jerome Boateng has been ruled out of Tuesday's away Nations League match against France in Paris with the under-fire Germans eager to avoid a record sixth defeat in a calendar year.

Boateng picked up a calf injury in Amsterdam as the Germans were hammered 3-0 by the Netherlands on Saturday to leave them bottom of their Nations League group.

The 30-year-old centre-back was injured with 20 minutes left, but finished the match as Germany coach Joachim Loew had already used his three substitutions with the Germans chasing the game at 1-0 down before the Dutch scored two late goals.

Boateng, a 2014 World Cup winner, will be replaced against the French by either his Bayern Munich team-mate Niklas Suele or Bayer Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah, who was drafted into the senior squad on Saturday after captaining the Under-21 team on Friday.

After the debacle in Amsterdam, Germany are eager for a victory at the Stade de France in Paris to avoid becoming the first senior German national side to lose six times in a single year and ease the mounting pressure on Loew.
