Spain coach Jorge Vilda says his "angry" players can shake off the mental scars of a 4-0 mauling from Japan and be a force in the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup.

The sixth-ranked Spanish were left shellshocked by a Japan side who topped Group C with a brilliant counter-attacking display in Wellington on Monday, handing the Europeans their heaviest defeat in 11 years.

Vilda is confident his squad laden with world-class quality will regroup for a last-16 clash with Switzerland in Auckland on Saturday.

"I have no doubt whatsoever that our team is going to react, that the attitude against Switzerland is going to be a different attitude," he said.

"It's the round of 16 at the World Cup and no one should lose hope.

"Mentally, of course, this has done some damage. It hurts, they are angry and I'm convinced that they'll be ready to compete. We will see in five days' time.

"We're not accustomed to this in my time with the team."

Vilda ruefully admired how well Japan coped with his team's trademark possession game, which had been effective in comfortable group wins over Zambia and Costa Rica.

Despite operating with about three-quarters of possession, Spain rarely threatened the goal, while they were repeatedly stung by Japan on the break.

"They got to the ball before we did and they closed every possible space that we had," Vilda said.

"Every time they took the ball away from us they had a counter-attack. They started a counter-attack with very little effort."

Nigeria advanced to the Women's World Cup knockout stages for the third time in their history after a 0-0 draw with Ireland in their final Group B match on Monday, with the African side finishing second in the group behind hosts Australia.

Nigeria started the game top of the standings and only needed to avoid defeat to reach the last 16, regardless of the result in the other Group B match in Melbourne where Australia thrashed Canada 4-0 to leapfrog the Africans. Nigeria will have to wait until Tuesday to discover who their last-16 opponents will be next week in Brisbane, but they side are likely to play European champions England who are favourites to top Group D.

"I don't think anybody, before we got here, believed that we could get out of this group and go through it without losing a match," Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum said. "So I'm so proud of them and the effort they put in and so happy for them that they're getting to experience this."

Both teams were playing in their away kits to avoid an all-green clash. But Brisbane's Lang Park was a sea of green in the stands, with plenty of support for Ireland despite their early elimination. After Irish skipper Katie McCabe flashed an early effort wide, Nigeria came closest to taking the lead in the first half through striker Asisat Oshoala when they pounced on an errant pass from Louise Quinn.

Oshoala was set through on goal with just the keeper to beat but the Barcelona striker fired wide to give Ireland a reprieve.

Seven minutes into the second half, Uchenna Kanu rose above the Ireland defence to direct a header on goal but Courtney Brosnan made a timely save to parry the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.

"It was an unbelievable ball into the box, one of those teasing ones I thought I could come at the last second. I dropped back and I knew I needed to make a special save on the line, so I just kind of threw my body out," said Brosnan. "I wanted to keep us in it. I knew we deserved something from today, so I'm really happy with that."

Brosnan came to Ireland's rescue again when Nigeria attempted to break through the defence with a clever set-piece routine before the Everton keeper rushed off her line to snatch the ball. While debutants Ireland go home having earned their first ever point at the World Cup, Nigeria will be looking to better their quarter-final run from 1999.

"We knew this was going to be the group of death, we knew it was going to be hard," midfielder Toni Payne said. "If we play like how we're playing, if we improve on each game, I think we can go all the way to the final."

Waldrum's side suffered a turbulent build-up to the tournament, the American coach clashing openly with the Nigerian football authorities over planning and unpaid wages.

Add in being in one of the toughest groups, and Nigeria were not expected to reach the knockout stages for only the third time.

Waldrum told reporters on Sunday that they had shown they were better than that and their FIFA ranking of 40th.

"I would say that we were underestimated and underappreciated," the 66-year-old said on the eve of their meeting in Brisbane with the Irish.

"Hopefully we've proven that to the world right now that we belong in a higher place (than 40th)."

Defender Michelle Alozie agreed, saying it was wrong that their draw with Canada and win over Australia had been called surprise results by many.

"With regards to Canada, the last game we played against them outside of the World Cup we tied them 2-2 and I think a lot of people forget to acknowledge that," she said.

"We've been building this entire time, the last two years that I've been on the team, and so when we came to Australia we felt very confident.

"We felt we had a game plan and all we had to do was execute it, especially on the counterattacks, which we did.

"So although it might have been a surprise for the rest of the world... we worked really hard for that, so it wasn't much of a shock to us."

As well as a first victory ever at the tournament, there was another piece of history for Morocco when defender Nouhaila Benzina became the first player to wear a hijab at the Women's World Cup.

French coach Reynald Pedros saw his Morocco team take the lead after only six minutes in front of just over 13,000 fans in Adelaide.

Hanane Ait El Haj crossed and forward Jraidi nipped in ahead of her marker to expertly glance her header into the far corner.

Morocco, one of the lowest-ranked teams at the tournament at 72 in the world, were supposed underdogs against the 17th-ranked Koreans.

But they made by far the better start against shell-shocked opponents.

Colin Bell's Korean side belatedly grew into the game towards the end of the first half, but like in their 2-0 opening defeat to Colombia, they lacked punch up front.

Many of the crowd were shouting for the Koreans and their team piled on the pressure in the second half as they attempted to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Going into the nervy final 10 minutes, South Korea had had 10 attempts at goal -- none of which were on target.

Morocco were grimly hanging on.

The Koreans had three players on two as they raced towards Morocco's goal, only for Benzina to cynically clip an advancing Korean attacker and earn a yellow card.

Bell threw on attacker Casey Phair, the United States-born 16-year-old who is the youngest player ever to feature at a Women's World Cup.

But Morocco held on for a gritty win that left South Korea facing an early exit from Group H.

Towering defender Amanda Ilestedt scored twice with her head to help Sweden to a 5-0 thrashing of Italy on Saturday and a berth in the Women's World Cup last 16.

A tight contest was blown open in a seven-minute spell late in the first half when the third-ranked Swedes found the net three times, through Ilestedt, Fridolina Rolfo and Stina Blackstenius.

Arsenal centre-back Ilestedt bagged her second soon after the interval to give her three goals for the tournament -- all headers from corners -- including a late match-winner in their opening 2-1 defeat of South Africa.

Substitute Rebecka Blomqvist rounded out the rout in stoppage time in front of nearly 30,000 in Wellington.

The Swedes are assured of finishing in the top two of Group G, becoming the third team to book a place in the knockout stage after Spain and Japan.

It was&nbsp;a flexing of the muscles from one of the tournament favourites, who have a history of near-misses at the World Cup.

Their set-piece prowess was on full show, with three of the goals coming from left-footed inswinging corners delivered by Jonna Andersson.

This time the Dutch had the better of the first half, finding chinks which were also evident in the United States' opening 3-0 win over minnows Vietnam.

Despite dominating the final stages, the Americans couldn't find a winner, producing a hot and cold performance which ends a string of 13 successive World Cup match wins and casts some doubt on their status as favourites to lift the trophy again.

Having opened with a 1-0 win over Portugal, the ninth-ranked Dutch looked like repeating that result when Roord struck smartly in the 17th minute.

The new Manchester City signing -- who came off the bench in the Lyon final four years ago -- finished with a low drive from the edge of the box to silence thousands of travelling US supporters in a crowd of 27,312.

An accurate toe-poke by forward Adriana Leon coupled with a touch of fortune allowed Canada to secure a 2-1 victory against Ireland on Wednesday, their first of this year's Women's World Cup, in wet and windy conditions at Perth Oval.

The game, however, will be remembered most for the debut of Italy's 16-year-old Giulia Dragoni.

Nicknamed&nbsp;'Little Messi'&nbsp;by teammates,&nbsp;it was apt as the teen made her debut against&nbsp;football superstar Lionel Messi's country.&nbsp;Dragoni also recently signed with Messi's long-time former club Barcelona from Inter Milan in a two-and-a-half-year&nbsp;deal.

During the match against Argentina, Dragoni showed her class and one of her moves became viral when she got the football ahead by taking it above the head of the opposition player. Have a look at the video here:

Out of all 32 teams in the World Cup, 30 teams have played at least one match in the tournament. Colombia and South Korea will kick start their campaign Tuesday, July 25 in a Group H match. The top two teams from each of the eight groups will move forward to the round of 16 to start the knockout round of the tournament.

The knockout round starts August 5 with quarterfinals taking place on August 11 and 12. The top four teams will clash for a place in the finale on August 15 and 16 before the winner is decided on August 20.

New Zealand's 26th-ranked&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Ferns drew 42,137 fans to Auckland's Eden Park on Thursday, more than double the previous record crowd for a women's soccer game in the country. The fans were rewarded with a stunning 1-0 victory over Norway.

Stajcic's Filipinas are unique in the diversity of their squad. Midfielder Anicka Castaneda is the lone home-grown talent among the 23. Eighteen players are from the United States, two are from Norway and one each from Canada and Australia. Fifteen players including Katrina Guillou, who had a goal disallowed as offside against Switzerland, have U.S. National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division 1 experience.

The statement read said that it "can confirm that the Football Ferns team and staff have been temporarily evacuated from the Pullman Hotel, their team base for the FIFA Women's World Cup, due to a fire.

"A man has been arrested following a suspicious fire at premises on Waterloo Quad, Auckland Central last night," police said. "The 34-year-old has been charged with burglary and arson and is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday."

CJ Bott, a defender with the football Ferns, said that some players did encounter smoke but everybody made it out safely in the end. The players spent a few hours at a nearby restaurant while the fire was brought under control, added Bott as reported by the Associated Press.

“We had really good security on board that gave us really good instruction and we all kind of dealt with it pretty well,” said forward Gabi Rennie. “I think our team is pretty good with dealing with adversity. So it’s just another kind of test.”

Notably, a fatal shooting occurred on the morning of the first day of the tournament near a hotel where several teams were staying. NZ, during their 1-0 win against Norway on Thursday, July 20, observed a moment of silence for the victims.

Vangsgaard soared highest to give Denmark a 1-0 victory and stun the crowd of 17,000 fans, most of whom were loudly supporting the Asian champions.

It was a significant victory for Denmark between two similarly ranked teams in Group C, which is headlined by contenders England.&nbsp;

Led by dynamic 22-year-old Zhang Linyan, China had been the aggressors in a match that failed to live up to great heights until the dramatic ending.

Having been an early powerhouse in women's football, finishing runners-up in 1999, China hoped a shock triumph at last year's Asian Cup could fuel a return to their former glory.&nbsp;

Star striker Wang Shuang surprisingly started on the bench, as an enterprising China dominated the early exchanges with their speed on the left wing rattling a nervous Denmark.&nbsp;

<h2>Stanway proves to be the difference-maker</h2>

Having started the contest as favourites, England hesitated to stamp their authority on the match against the debutant Haiti side. While there were nervous moments at the start for the European Champions, it was in the 29th minute when the Lionesses got a penalty. Batcheba Louis was adjourned to have handled the ball in the penalty area while Chloe Kelly took the corner. Upon review, England were awarded a penalty with Stanway in charge to break the deadline.

Stanway, however, was given a reprieve after she missed the first penalty attempt as Haiti goalkeeper Kerly Theus was caught leaving the goal line while making the save. Upon review, England were given a second opportunity to open the scoring as Stanway made no mistake to give her side a deserved lead.

<h2>Mary Earps turns hero for England</h2>

The scoreline would stay the same until halftime when England pressed for more and attempted to push for the second goal. However, it were the minnows Haiti that had the best chance of the second half after Melchie Dumornay’s outside-the-box strike was saved by English goalkeeper Mary Earps. She would be called into action again as Haiti continued to press on counterattacks.

Millie Bright’s side was vulnerable on the counter-attack and failed to extend their lead which could have cost them points. With five points from time, Earps made a great save to keep England’s lead intact when Roseline Eloissaint found herself one-on-one. The save proved to be vital as England emerged with all three points to kick off with a perfect start.

Lionesses will now take on China and Denmark in their remaining two group games and will look for a better performance.

At the end of a scrappy, bruising contest, Nigeria were down to 10 via a late red card and both teams earned a point to trail Group B leaders Australia by two following the co-hosts' 1-0 win over Ireland on Thursday.

"We've got to move on very quickly, you know, you can get lost and be really down on that," said Canada coach Bev Priestman, whose team next faces Ireland in Perth on Wednesday. "Of course the team and I am devastated. We didn't get three points. But at the end of the day we got one and we took two from another team."

Both sides had their chances but 40-year-old Sinclair, who came off ashen-faced in the 70th minute, was perhaps the most frustrated, having also missed a good opportunity when she fired wide in the ninth minute. Infantino was speaking in Auckland hours before the draw for next year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and with women's football breaking new ground.

The World Cup in July-August will have 32 teams for the first time and global interest is anticipated to be at an all-time high.

But without naming specific broadcasters, Infantino said offers submitted for the television rights were far too low.

"Broadcasters offer us 100 times less than what they offer us for the men's World Cup," Infantino told reporters.

He accused television companies of "pushing us to do more for equality and at the same time we are not going to accept these offers".

Infantino said that FIFA had invested one billion dollars into women's football in recent years.

The 2015 and 2019 Women's World Cups made a financial loss, but Infantino said: "The next World Cup will cost us around $400 million and we hope to break even."

For the first time, FIFA plans to sell the commercial rights separate from the men's tournament.

"We are trying to commercialise the Women's World Cup for the first time on its own," he said.

The FIFA boss also doubled down on assurances that gay fans who travel to Qatar for the men's World Cup next month will be safe, despite homosexuality being a criminal offence there.

"I have said it (before), I repeat it -- whatever nationality, background, gender, sexual orientation, everyone is welcome in Qatar," Infantino said.

Infantino also confirmed that the FIFA Clearing House, aimed at regulating the extra payments around transfer fees, will come into force on November 16.
