Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is owned by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg and in March this year, it was found guilty of “extremist activity” in Russia by a Moscow court. The case was filed after Meta was accused of allowing posts that called for violence against the Russian military in Ukraine.&nbsp;

As a result of this decision, people in Russia will not have any access to the services provided by Meta – which includes extremely popular social media platforms Instagram and Facebook. According to Insider, the ban can come into effect almost immediately depending on the government’s will.&nbsp;

Zuckerberg is already on the list of individuals who were barred by the Russian foreign ministry from entering the country back in April. The tech billionaire was part of a list that include US Vice President Kamala Harris, EO of LinkedIn Ryan Roslansky, and more than 900 other American citizens.&nbsp;

In the official statement, Rosfinmonitoring said that Meta has been biased towards the western countries in the coverage of the Ukraine-Russia crisis. They said that the company is “discriminating” against Russian news outlets and have restricted user access to outlets like Sputnik and Russia Today.&nbsp;

Meta’s researchers said that on most occasions, the malicious apps asked the user to log into their Facebook account to continue and in the process, stole the username and password information.

The number of such apps were estimated to be somewhere around 400 and Meta spokesperson Gabby Curtis confirmed said that the company is trying to ascertain the number of affected users.

“This is a highly adversarial space and while our industry peers work to detect and remove malicious software, some of these apps evade detection and make it onto legitimate app stores,” wrote Meta’s Threat Disruption Director David Agranovich in the company’s official blog.

Meta has already reached out to both Apple and Google to de-list the apps from their online stores and have provided them with a complete report of their findings. The company has also reached out to the potentially affected users to guide them on how to protect their data and Agranovich said that as the activity did not occur on Meta systems, it will be easier for the company to take note of the issues.

ARCON is seeking ₦30 billion (~$50 million) in sanctions for the violation of the advertising laws and for loss of revenue as a result 
of Meta’s continued exposure of unapproved adverts on its platforms.

The regulatory body believes that Meta’s continued exposure of unvetted adverts had also led to a loss of revenue to the federal government as it reiterates that it would not permit unethical and irresponsible advertising on Nigeria’s advertising space.

This move comes after a new bill by ARCON was passed by the National Assembly and approved by the Nigerian president in August. The new bill repealed the Advertising Practitioners (Registration, etc.) Act, Cap. A7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and enacting the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) Act, 2022, which recognizes ARCON as the apex authority for the Nigerian advertising industry.

Responding to questions from WION, Chukudi Ezeaba, Head (Legal Advertising), ARCON, enlightened practitioners on the laws that govern advertising in the country, be it on or off the social media space.

"The principal legislation governing advertising in Nigeria is the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act No. 23 of 2022 and the Nigeria Code of Advertising Practice. There are fragments of other statutory provisions concerning advertising in some specific legislations like the Electoral Act and some industry-specific regulations. Overall, the ARCON Act is preeminent."

He cleared the air on reports that suggest the council will be stifling small businesses in Nigeria..

"That position is very incorrect and mainly peddled by those who carry out advertising that ordinarily would not be approved by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) and primary and secondary online media platform owners. ARCON has provided a very business-friendly model for SMEs for the vetting of advertisements from small businesses. That has been encouraging for those who comply with the statutory provisions. Most of the critics have not availed themselves with the opportunities offered by the model."

ARCON also shared that it’s not regulating the online media space but advertising and marketing communications on online platforms in line with its establishment act and advised practitioners to "Simply ensure that their advertisements are vetted and approved before exposure."

Recall that ARCON in August announced the ban on the use of all foreign models and voice-over artists in Nigeria, a move that has been met with mixed feelings as Nigerians look forward to its pros and cons in the coming years. &nbsp;

This move, according to Ezeaba, is "to ensure ethical advertising business and practice in Nigeria. Making constructive business-friendly and productive policies that will encourage SMEs and other businesses to thrive in Nigeria.

Reportedly, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, has been charged with the duty to decide if Trump can return to Facebook and Instagram in 2023. The top Meta official, at a recent public event, stated he will make the final call in consultation with CEO Mark Zuckerberg.&nbsp;

“It’s not a capricious decision. We will look at the signals related to real-world harm to make a decision whether at the two-year point which is early January next year whether Trump gets reinstated to the platform,” said Clegg.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that Trump was banned from nearly every major social media platform in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riots where Trump supporters allegedly attempted to overturn the election results. The Republican leader was accused of posting messages online to incite violence.

While Twitter banned the Republican leader for perpetuity, Facebook imposed a two-year ban to be later re-evaluated. However, since the ban was imposed, much water has flown under the bridge.

Last year, Haugen released reams of internal papers demonstrating that management were aware of the dangers associated with their site, which sparked a new drive for legislation in the US.

The 3-0 ruling by the 5th US&nbsp;Circuit Court of Appeals, based in New Orleans, sets up the potential for the US&nbsp;Supreme Court to rule on the law, which conservatives and right-wing commentators have said is necessary to prevent "Big Tech" from suppressing their views.

"Today we reject the idea that corporations have a freewheeling First Amendment right to censor what people say," Judge Andrew Oldham, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, wrote in the ruling.

The Texas law was passed by the state's Republican-led legislature and signed by its Republican governor.

The tech groups that challenged the law and were on the losing end of Friday's ruling include NetChoice and the Computer &amp; Communications Industry Association, which count Meta Platforms' Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet Inc's YouTube as members.

They have sought to preserve rights to regulate user content when they believe it may lead to violence, citing concerns that unregulated platforms will enable extremists such as Nazi supporters, terrorists and hostile foreign governments.

The association on Friday said it disagreed with forcing private companies to give equal treatment to all viewpoints. "'God Bless America' and 'Death to America' are both viewpoints, and it is unwise and unconstitutional for the state of Texas to compel a private business to treat those the same," it said in a statement.

Some conservatives have labeled the social media companies' practices abusive, pointing to Twitter's permanent suspension of Trump from the platform shortly after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters. Twitter had cited "the risk of further incitement of violence" as a reason.

The Texas law forbids social media companies with at least 50 million monthly active users from acting to "censor" users based on "viewpoint," and allows either users or the Texas attorney general to sue to enforce the law.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Twitter hailed the ruling as "massive victory for the constitution and free speech."

Because the 5th Circuit ruling conflicts with part of a ruling by the 11th Circuit, the aggrieved parties have a stronger case for petitioning the Supreme Court to hear the matter.

In May, the 11th Circuit, based in Atlanta, found that most of a similar Florida law violates the companies' free speech rights and cannot be enforced.

Though there have been instances of cooperation, self-regulatory bodies to police content in the social media sector are rare.

Highlighting its concern that users upset with decisions to have their content taken down do not have a proper system to appeal those decisions, the Modi government said that their only legal recourse is to go to court.

It is pertinent to note that Meta works with a non-profit named Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) which maintains a database of terror-linked accounts. GIFCT was formed by big tech giants such as Microsoft, Twitter, YouTube and Meta in 2017 to stop the spread of online terror-related content. Any individual flagged as a terrorist by Meta is then censored on other platforms rather quickly, thereby reducing the reach of the creator, forcing them to make an account on OnlyFans, which remained the only platform to enjoy immunity from the crackdown. The scam had been ongoing since 2018 The complainants have argued that more than one Meta employees, including a senior executive had been in on the bribery scam since October 2018. Fenix International diverted the money through a secret Hong Kong company that deposited it eventually into an offshore Philippines account, allegedly operated by the Meta employees. OnlyFans' owner Leonid Radvinsky has also been named in the lawsuit. Reportedly, through the blacklisting, OnlyFans managed to quash its competitors and managed to remain the only company with such an IP. OnlyFans responded to the allegations by terming them devoid of any merit, “We are aware that these cases have been filed. We are not aware of any evidence which supports these allegations. The alleged participants have all publicly stated that these cases have no merit.” As reported by WION, earlier in February this year, FanCentro, a rival of OnlyFans had begun legal action against the company. It was only in January earlier this year after Twitter agreed to the Nigerian government's demands that it was allowed to come out of its seven-month exile. As for Facebook, for the first time in its history, the company reported a drop in revenue. This came on the back of Facebook users declining in the first few months of the year. The company cannot afford to lose the Kenyan market where&nbsp;over 13 million users used the social media app in March 2022.&nbsp;

Minister of State for IT and electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the government was seriously considering formulating new rules to correct the anomaly of the situation.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“The market power on digital advertising that is currently being exercised by the Big Tech majors, which places Indian media companies at a position of disadvantage, is an issue that is seriously being examined in the context of new legalisations and rules,” the minister was quoted as saying by TOI.&nbsp;

Tech platforms are opaque in their practices

Facebook started as a platform that connected people. However, it has now metamorphosed into a space for sharing news and other media content. Similarly, Google is not just a search engine anymore, albeit, it has branched out to become a major platform for sharing news.&nbsp;

According to Digital News Publishers’ Association (DNPA), more than 50 per cent of the traffic on news websites is routed through Google. And Google, akin to its ad-revenue policies, is opaque about the algorithms that push a particular news channel website up on the list.&nbsp;

While the Indian government mulls bringing the legislation, countries around the globe have already started to tighten the bolts. Reportedly, Australia and France have already brought and enacted legislation that binds Google and other tech platforms to divide their share of the pie with local news creators. Canada and United Kingdom are also attempting to bring similar legislation.&nbsp;

Up until now, Facebook only allowed a user to create a single account. However, business accounts and public personalities were given the leeway to make multiple accounts.

If the tests are successful, Facebook is expected to allow users to create up to five additional accounts, with switching between them requiring only two taps.

The other accounts can be used to show the alter-egos of the users. These user profiles can be dedicated to myriad hobbies such as cooking, dancing, singing or simply talking to a close family or friends group.&nbsp;

This way, Facebook is attempting to ward off competition from new-age rival platforms such as TikTok. The short-video platform has been a thorn in Facebook's flesh for a long time.&nbsp;
