Singapore policies have ordered Meta to implement anti-scam measures against advertisements, accounts, profiles and business pages impersonating key government office holders on its social media network Facebook to combat scams, a government minister said.

"Donate now — every second counts, every drone saves lives."One publisher flagged by Ekō, Vaad Hatzedaka, a non profit, has even linked its ads to a donation page listing the exact models of drones and tactical gear it was fundraising for, including two drones made by Chinese firm Autel. <h2>No more live streaming for under-16s</h2>
One of the main changes is a new restriction on Instagram&rsquo;s Live feature. Teenagers under the age of 16 will no longer be able to use Instagram Live unless they have permission from a parent. Meta is also tightening how teens interact with images in direct messages. A feature that blurs images suspected of containing nudity will now require parental approval to be switched off.

<h2>What are other new features?</h2>
The company is rolling out the same system of teen accounts that was introduced on Instagram last year to Facebook and Messenger. These teen accounts automatically apply stricter safety settings for under-18 users. Parents can set daily time limits, restrict usage at certain hours, and view who their child is messaging.
In the new update, users under 16 will need parental consent to make any changes to these default settings. Those aged 16 and 17 will also have the features turned on by default but will be allowed to adjust them on their own.
The updated features will first be introduced in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
Meta said that more than 90% of 13- to 15-year-olds using Instagram have kept the restrictions on, and around 54 million teens worldwide are currently using the teen account system.

The changes come at a time when governments are putting pressure on tech companies to protect young users. In the UK, the Online Safety Act came into effect in March.
This law forces online platforms to take action against illegal content like child abuse, terrorism, and online fraud. It also requires extra protections for under-18s to keep them safe from harmful material such as suicide or self-harm-related content.
<h2>&ldquo;Shift the balance in favour of parents&rdquo;</h2>
When the Instagram teen features were first introduced, Meta&rsquo;s then president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, said the goal was to give parents more control.
He explained that the new rules would &ldquo;shift the balance in favour of parents&rdquo; when it comes to keeping their children safe online. Clegg also pointed out that many parents still don&rsquo;t make use of available safety tools.

The US techie has drastically steered Meta to the right ahead of the inauguration ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump.
Zuckerberg earlier shut down Meta&rsquo;s fact-checking and moderation systems, arguing they promoted censorship and curtailed freedom of speech. Meta has also made some changes to its policy on political content, saying it will again start recommending posts on politics.
Meta is also ending its programmes aimed at hiring diverse candidates, including disbanding its diversity, equity and inclusion team and getting rid of its &ldquo;Diverse Slate Approach&rdquo; in its hiring process.

META CEO Mark Zuckerberg's announcement to toss out fact-checkers and prioritise 'free speech' sparked condemnation from critics, who called it a "major step back" for public discourse.&nbsp;
Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday (Jan 7) that the company will be making some changes to its moderation policies and practices, citing its aim to embrace free speech.&nbsp;
The company will be altering the way posts, videos, and other content are moderated online. It will be getting rid of fact-checkers and will replace them with user-generated "community notes", which is similar to Elon Musk's X.&nbsp;

<h2>'Bending of knee to Trump'</h2>
Nina Jankowicz, a former US government official tasked with fighting disinformation, described Zuckerberg's move as a "full bending of the knee to Trump."
"Facebook has already contributed to the demise of journalism and this will be the final nail in the coffin," she added.

<h2>'Blatant attempt'</h2>
Global Witness, a human rights group, said, &ldquo;Zuckerberg&rsquo;s announcement is a blatant attempt to cosy up to the incoming Trump administration, with harmful implications."&nbsp;
"These changes will make it more dangerous for women, LGBT+ people, people of colour, scientists, and activists to speak out online, where they already face disproportionate harassment and attacks," it added.
The Centre for Information Resilience warned it was a "major step back for content moderation at a time when disinformation and harmful content are evolving faster than ever."&nbsp;

A major marketing company whose clients include Facebook, Amazon and Google has admitted that it listens to users' smartphone conversations and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to articulate data and later place advertisements.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cox Media Group (CMG) privately admitted to the long-held suspicions of smartphone users during a pitch deck to investors. The&nbsp;firm stated that its&nbsp;“Active Listening” software uses AI to&nbsp;“capture real-time intent data by listening to our conversations", according to a report in 404 Media.

"Advertisers can pair this voice data with behavioural data to target in-market consumers," CMG said in the pitch deck.&nbsp;

"Consumers leave a data trail based on their conversations and online behaviour and the AI-powered software collects and analyses behavioural and voice data from 470+ sources,"&nbsp;it added.&nbsp;

Digital switching is the practice of people switching between videos or fast-forward through them on platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Netflix. The study done in University of Toronto showed that this switching behaviour "makes people feel more bored, less satisfied, less engaged, and less meaningful in some instances."&nbsp;

The&nbsp;assessment was made based on the idea that switching from one content to other is actually a tedious process, which tires one's attention span. Boredom is directly linked to attention: it's the disparity between what one wants to do or where one wants to be versus the reality.&nbsp;

“When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom,” the Guardian newspaper quoted Dr Katy Tam at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the lead author of the research, as saying.

<h2>How 'boredom on social media' study was done</h2>

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, reached the conclusion after experiments on 1,200 participants who were shown videos and made to answer questions about boredom.

One experiment with 140 respondents revealed that people tended to switch between videos more when they rated the content more boring.&nbsp;

It was found that switching between videos - or within a video - not only led to more boredom, but also reduced satisfaction, reduced attention, and lowered meaning.&nbsp;

Even when participants had the freedom to watch videos of personal choice and interest on YouTube, digital switching still intensified boredom, it found.&nbsp;

"Our findings suggest that attempts to avoid boredom through digital switching may sometimes inadvertently exacerbate it," said the authors.

<h2>Age may be a factor in how easily bored you get with online videos</h2>

People of different ages, said the study,&nbsp;may have different habits when it comes to watching videos and switching. “How people consume videos and how this affects boredom may vary based on age and digital media habits," it said, adding further research is needed to explore this aspect.

When participants were bored, they switched and they believed that switching would help them avoid boredom," said the study. Even when participants had the freedom to watch videos of personal choice and interest on YouTube, digital switching still intensified boredom, it found. "Our findings suggest that attempts to avoid boredom through digital switching may sometimes inadvertently exacerbate it," said the authors. It is the latest of a line in regulatory challenges for Meta, already facing a separate charge at the Commission over its failure to comply with new tech rules about its ad model.

The investigation is being carried out under a mammoth law called the Digital Services Act (DSA) which forces the largest tech firms in the world to take more steps to protect European users online and remove any illegal content. This is the second investigation which has been launched into Meta. Last month, another probe was launched by the European Union over concerns that Facebook and Instagram are not countering disinformation. "We want young people to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online and have spent a decade developing more than 50 tools and policies designed to protect them," said the spokesperson. The commission also raised another issue which was the so-called "rabbit hole" effect. This happens when users get related content based on an algorithm, which in a few cases leads to more extreme content. The commission also expressed concern that the age-verification tools of Meta may not be that effective. According to DSA, there are strict rules for protecting children and ensuring that their privacy and security are not hampered online. The EU fears that Meta may not be taking enough steps to meet these obligations.
