The woman was diagnosed by the authors with an infection called "ocular pentastomiasis". This is a rare eye infection which occurs because of parasites known as "pentastomids". In the woman's case, the parasite had embedded itself below the conjunctiva or the clear outer membrane of the left eye of the patient and had grown to about 0.4 inches (10 millimetres) long. According to the doctors, the 28-year-old from Basankusu in Congo did not show any other symptoms apart from the outgrown mass in the corner of her eye, reported her doctors. In these hosts, they generally develop into larvae before getting eaten by a snake, which completes the life cycle of the parasite. More than 10 people in Pakistan lost their vision after a locally manufactured injectable medicine to address retinal damage caused by severe eye infection.

The incident was reported from several areas of Punjab province, including Lahore and Kasur districts, provincial Health Minister Jamal Nasir said on Sunday (Sept 24).

According to Dawn newspaper, these patients, who were diabetic, were administered Avastin injections. However, the medicine led to severe infections, ultimately resulting in the loss of eyesight of 12 patients, including the brother of senior Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Chaudhry Manzoor and his friend.

Till Tuesday (Sept 26), more than 70 diabetic patients are said to have been affected,&nbsp;prompting the provincial caretaker government to impose a two-week ban on the sale and use of Avastin for ophthalmological treatments. However, it is not known whether all of these 70 have lost vision.

PPP was one of the ruling coalition parties of the Pakistan government that was recently dissolved to pave&nbsp;the way for elections. Former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the chairman of the party.

A case has been lodged against suppliers of locally manufactured injection Avastin and they are currently absconding, the health minister said, adding that the government has recalled the medicine from the market.

As per the plan, “immediate strict action” would be taken against drug inspectors responsible for the availability of non-sterile injections with a pending inquiry.

Till Tuesday (Sept 26), more than 70 diabetic patients are said to have been affected, prompting the provincial caretaker government to impose a two-week ban on the sale and use of Avastin for ophthalmological treatments. However, it is not known whether all of these 70 have lost vision. PPP was one of the ruling coalition parties of the Pakistan government that was recently dissolved to pave the way for elections. Former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the chairman of the party. A case has been lodged against suppliers of locally manufactured injection Avastin and they are currently absconding, the health minister said, adding that the government has recalled the medicine from the market. The discolouration faded after five days, and the baby boy's eyes regained their original colour. Survey reveals why While experts are still unaware of the reason behind the discolouration, they suspect the fluorescence (the emission of absorbed light) may be because of the drug's metabolites or additional tablet components like titanium dioxide and yellow ferric oxide. Some studies have suggested a direct relationship between the concentration of favipiravir and fluorescence intensity, particularly in human hair and nails. The child did not experience any vision damage and successfully recovered from COVID-19 symptoms. Mild hyperuricemia (increased uric acid levels), diarrhoea, and neutropenia (decreased white blood cell neutrophils) are the most common side effects of favipiravir, accounting for roughly 20 per cent of adverse reactions. In 2021, a 20-year-old Indian man reported the strange effect of the treatment. He noticed his dark brown eyes had become bright blue on the second day of favipiravir treatment. Doctors instructed him to stop the medication, and his eyes returned to normal after one day. Several countries, including Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Kazakhstan, have approved Favipiravir for COVID-19 treatment, but it has not received an FDA licence. It received approval for emergency use in Italy in 2020. Many United States researchers suggest the medication is effective for COVID-19 treatment, as several studies tested the drug's ability to combat the disease. Sri Lankan national Priyantha Kumara Diyawadana was lynched to death by a mob of hundreds on December 3 in Pakistan's Sialkot. The frenzied mob attacked Priyantha on suspicions that he had committed blasphemy. Priyantha, a manager of a factory was attacked, tortured and his body was burnt. As per media reports on post-mortem, all bones in his body were broken and the body was 99 per cent burnt.

Diyawadana's body was transferred to Lahore after the autopsy, according to a Punjab Police spokeswoman, where that was handed over to the Sri Lankan embassy.
