<p>President Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially submitted Sweden's NATO membership application to the Turkish parliament on Monday, his office said, bringing closer the possible end of a 17-month standoff.</p>

<p>"Sweden's NATO membership protocol was signed on October 23, 2023 by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and sent to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey," the presidency posted on X, formerly Twitter.</p>

<p>Turkey and Hungary are last two NATO members which are yet to ratify Sweden's membership application. Sweden moved away from its long-standing policy of non-alignment after Russia invaded Ukraine and made an application to join the alliance.</p>

<p>NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Erdogan's move as well. He said he was looking forward to welcoming Sweden as a 'full NATO ally' soon</p>

<p>As pressure to give its seal of approval grew on Turkey, Erdogan agreed at NATO summit in Vilnius in July that he would put ratification of Sweden's membership before Turkish parliament.</p>

<p>Finland, Sweden's neighbour which shares a border with Russia which had applied to join NATO at the same time, got membership in the month of April this year.</p>

<p>Erdogan had delayed approving Sweden's bid asking Stockholm to take actions on Quran desecrations in the country that have strained relations between the two countries.</p>

<p>Turkey alleges Sweden harbours outlawed Kurdish militants and has demanded their extradition.</p>

<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday (Oct 8) inaugurated the first church built with government backing in the country's post-Ottoman modern history. Turkey is an overwhelmingly Muslim country. The inauguration of the Mor Ephrem Syriac Orthodox Church is being viewed as an important cultural and political moment for both&nbsp;Turkey and Erdogan himself.</p>

<p>Erdogan has been widely criticised during his two-decade rule for his conversions of ancient churches into mosques. He also made Islamic conservatism a leading social force in the country.</p>

<p>He has always countered his critics by maintaining that he was only restoring the rights of the pious Muslims in the staunchly secular republic founded by field marshal Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.</p>

<p>In 2019, Erdogan laid the first stone for the church's construction. It now will be a place of prayer for Istanbul's 17,000-strong Assyrian Christians.</p>

<p>"We are seeing big problems today across many parts of the world," Erdogan told the faithful as all-out war raged between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.</p>

<p>"But the solidarity shown here today -- I find it very important," Erdogan said.</p>

<p>"We always protect the oppressed against the oppressor. That is our duty."</p>

<p>The Assyrian Christianity dates back to the first century AD and members of the community once lived in a region stretching from southwestern Turkey to Syria and Iraq.</p>

<p>Its main church moved from the Turkish city of Mardin to Damascus in 1932. In the past century, some small Turkish churches have been quietly&nbsp;restored and reopened.</p>

<p>On Sunday, Erdogan said that 20 existing churches were repaired since his party came to power in 2002.</p>

<p>But the Mor Ephrem "is the first newly built church to open its doors since the founding of the Turkish Republic," Assyrian community leader Sait Susin told AFP by telephone.</p>

<p>In 2020, Erdogan drew international criticism and even indignation when he converted Instanbul's iconic Hagia Sophia, once the world's largest cathedral, from a museum into a mosque.</p>

<p>UNESCO had expressed "grave concern at the time".</p>

<p>But Erdogan did not budge and converted another church into a mosque in the same year. The church in this case was Istanbul's Byzantine-era Chora church. After Erdogan's move, Greece called the conversion "yet another provocation against religious persons everywhere".</p>

<p>The new church, inaugurated by Erdogan, can accommodate 750 worshippers.</p>

<p>A visibly livid Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, lambasted the European Union on Sunday (Oct 1) over&nbsp;what he claims&nbsp;are hurdles being created to prevent the country from joining the bloc.</p>

<p>Before the inaugural session of the parliament, Erdogan said he “no longer expects anything from the European Union, which has kept us waiting at its door for 40 years".</p>

<p>"We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU but they have kept almost none of theirs," he added, AFP reported.</p>

<p>The 69-year-old Turkish leader further said that he would not "tolerate any new demands or conditions on the accession process" for his country to join the bloc.</p>

<h2><strong>Tensions after ECHR ruling</strong></h2>

<p>His remarks come in the wake of a judgement by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday that condemned Ankara for convicting a teacher for his alleged role in the 2016 attempted coup on the grounds he had downloaded an encrypted messaging app linked with the alleged plotters.</p>

<p>The ECHR argued that the court’s ruling could be applied to thousands of other Turks who were jailed following a failed coup attempt in 2016.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, the Strasbourg court ruled that the former teacher Yuksel Yalcinkay's rights were violated in three instances: Article 6, Article 7 and Article 11 on freedom of assembly and association.</p>

<p>Turkey blames a group led by the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen for being behind the failed attempt to oust Erdogan.</p>

<p>Earlier, Turkish Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç dismissed the ECHR’s decision.</p>

<p>"It is unacceptable for the ECtHR to overstep its jurisdiction and issue a judgement of violation by examining the evidence in a case where our judicial authorities at all levels have deemed the evidence sufficient," the minister said on X.</p>

In the name of my country and people, I hope all the people of Morocco gets better soon. <p>"The termination of the Black Sea grain deal will have a series of consequences, ranging from the increase in global food prices to scarcity in certain regions and, potentially, leading to new waves of migration," Erdogan told reporters on a flight returning from a trip to Gulf countries and northern Cyprus.</p>

<p>"I believe that by thoroughly discussing the matter with President Putin, we can ensure the continuation of this humanitarian effort," Erdogan added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This week, Russia quit a deal that was orchestrated by the United Nations and Turkey, which allowed the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine grain for the past year and repealed guarantees of secure navigation. Since then, no ships have cruised from Ukrainian ports.</p>

<p>Moscow released a statement saying that it will return to the deal only if its demands are met for easier access to its own food and fertiliser exports to world markets. As per the Western countries, Russia has had no trouble selling food, which is exempt from financial sanctions.</p>

<p>"We are aware that President Putin also has certain expectations from Western countries, and it is crucial for these countries to take action in this regard," Erdogan said.</p>

<p>Further, the Turkish president repeated his remarks saying that he hoped Putin would visit Turkey in August.</p>

<p>"I believe that, without prolonging the process, we will ensure the continuation of the Black Sea grain initiative."</p>

<p>On Friday, the Kremlin released a statement saying that Ukraine's "unpredictable" actions pose a danger to civilian shipping in the Black Sea.</p>

<p>It further condemned Kyiv for carrying out "terrorist attacks" in the area.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Russia said that this week all the ships that were heading to Ukraine's Black Sea ports could be considered military targets and that their flag countries parties to the conflict on the Ukrainian side, after it annulled their security guarantees by pulling back from the Black Sea grain deal.</p>

<p>"Unpredictable actions and, moreover, the involvement of the Kyiv regime in terrorist acts certainly potentially create a threat in this area," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.</p>

<p>On being asked if ships carrying Russian oil and other goods from Russia's Black Sea ports were at risk, Peskov told reporters that government departments would take a decision.</p>

<p>"The situation is being analysed, and our responsible agencies will develop appropriate recommendations to minimise the danger," he said.</p>

<p>"We are preparing to welcome Putin in August and we agree on the extension of the Black Sea grain corridor," Erdogan told reporters.</p>

<p>United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres sent a letter to Putin this week about extension of the deal. The secretary general has supported removing hurdles to Russia exporting its fertilisers. Moscow has complained that obstacles to Russia's own exports have not been removed.</p>

<p>Erdogan said he hopes "that with this letter we will ensure the extension of the grain corridor with our joint efforts and those of Russia."</p>

<h2><strong>Not one&nbsp;condition met: Putin</strong></h2>

<p>President Putin complained on Thursday that "not one" of Moscow's conditions for the deal to function had been met.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I want to emphasise that nothing was done, nothing at all. It's all one-sided," Putin said in a televised interview, adding: "We will think about what to do, we have a few more days."</p>

<p>The deal between Russia and Ukraine was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey. The deal has till now, allowed Ukraine to ship more than 32 million tonnes of grain past Russian warships stationed in the Black Sea.</p>

<p>A large part of the grain has gone to feed people in developing countries in the African continent, West Asia and elsewhere. If the deal is not extended and the exports are blocked again, food prices can soar.</p>

<h2><strong>Advanced 2 km along front, says Ukraine</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Ukraine said on Friday that its troops advanced nearly two kilometres along the southern front over the past week.</p>

<p>Mykola Urshalovych, a senior representative of the National Guard, told reporters that the force's 15th Karadag brigade and regular troops had moved towards the occupied southern city of Melitopol during the ongoing offensive.</p>
