<p>Tech billionaire Elon Musk's private aerospace company SpaceX has sought approval from regulators in the US to connect its Starlink satellite Internet network to large vehicles including trucks and ships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The request, filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), marks a move to expand the Starlink satellite Internet network from rural areas to other sectors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This application would serve the public interest by authorising a new class of ground-based components for SpaceX's satellite system that will expand the range of broadband capabilities available to moving vehicles throughout the United States and to moving vessels and aircraft worldwide," SpaceX Director of Satellite policy David Goldman wrote in a letter to the FCC filed on Friday, according to a report in CNBC on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the report, Musk clarified that SpaceX is not connecting the Starlink satellite Internet network to Tesla cars.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Not connecting Tesla cars to Starlink, as our terminal is much too big. This is for aircraft, ships, large trucks &amp; Rvs," he said in a tweet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk had said last month that Internet speed of its Starlink satellite-based internet service, which aims to provide cheaper web for millions in remote areas across the world, will double to 300 Mbps this year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company currently promises speeds between 50 and 150 Mbps for the Starlink project that plans to deliver high-speed internet through a network of about 12,000 satellites. It has already put over 1,000 of its Starlink satellites in orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk had earlier said that Starlink will list publicly after the cash flow of the service becomes "reasonably well".&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Shanghai-based Hurun Global Rich List, the <strong>Ant Group</strong> founder has tumbled to fourth place behind Nongfu Spring's Zhong Shanshan, Tencent Holding's Pony Ma and Pinduoduo's Collin Huang.</p>

<p><strong>Shanshan</strong> entered the list for the first time with an $85 billion fortune. Zhong had reportedly made his money on the $1.1 billion initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong last year.</p>

<p>The Hurun report said Ma's ranking fell after "China's regulators reined in Ant Group and<strong> Alibaba</strong> on anti-trust issues". &nbsp;</p>

<p>Yusaku Maezawa, a fashion tycoon, was the first human being to book a spot aboard the lunar spaceship being developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX.&nbsp;<br />
Maezawa had booked his spot back in 2018, but the amount he paid to get the exclusive spot has not been disclosed yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The online fashion tycoon had earlier expressed hopes to take six artists with him on this trip, which is expected to launch in 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, on Wednesday, he posted a video and a signup link informing people that he is accepting applications to find the right candidates who will fly to the moon with him.</p>

<p>"I'm inviting you to join me on this mission. Eight of you from all around the world. The mission will take two years from now, in 2023. I want people from all kinds of background to join," he can be heard saying in the video message.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In all, he said around 10 to 12 people will be on board the spaceship, which is expected to loop around the Moon before returning to Earth. "I have bought all the seats, so it will be a private ride," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While there is no listed deadline to this, as of now, the application involves an assignment and an online interview, The final interviews and medical checkups are scheduled for May 2021, though.</p>

<p>Fans of Hollywood actor Tom Cruise were going gaga over his TikTok videos until they realised the videos were all fake. Such is a technology-driven world we live in, that it is nearly impossible to recognise which images and videos are real and which ones are deepfakes.</p>

<p>Deepfake is the new age photoshop that gives a person the power to make anyone do anything on camera. These videos look and sound too real to be fake.</p>

<p>A video that recently started doing rounds on the internet was a clip of a former US President saying 'President Trump is a complete dips**t'. However, that definitely was not President Obama actually using such crass language for Trump, it was yet another deepfake.</p>

<p>These days, apps allow you to find and swap faces. Basically, you can make anyone do anything on camera. All you need to do is spend some time morphing a video.</p>

<p>This is the new age of photoshop. It may look fun, but it is also dangerous.</p>

<p>If you are still not satisfied with the examples, here's another one in which the Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg can be seen saying "Imagine this for a second: one man with total control of billions of people's stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures". However, that video was also proved to be a deepfake.</p>

<p>Elon Musk of Tesla and Jeff Bezos of Amazon have more than $350 billion in combined wealth and preside over two of the most valuable companies ever created. But when they’re not innovating on Earth, they have been focusing their considerable brain power on bringing a multiplanetary human habitat to reality.</p>

<p>For Mr. Musk, it’s through his other company, SpaceX, which has become an ever bigger player in the private space-technology arena. On top of satellite launches and other rocket innovations, the company announced it will send its first “all civilian” crew into orbit at the end of the year, in a mission called Inspiration4. SpaceX has already carried NASA astronauts to the International Space Station and is planning to transport more, as well as private astronauts, for a high price.</p>

<p>Most ambitiously, Mr. Musk has said that SpaceX will land humans on Mars by 2026. To do that, the private company will use a chunk of the close to $3 billion — including $850 million announced this week in a regulatory filing — that it has raised over the last year to finance this herculean effort.</p>

<p>While Mr. Musk might not be the first human to go to the red planet, he once told me that he wanted to die there, joking, “Just not on landing.”</p>

<p>Mr. Bezos, who is stepping down as chief executive of Amazon this year, is expected to accelerate his space-travel efforts through his company Blue Origin, whose tag line reads, in part, “Earth, in all its beauty, is just our starting place.”</p>

<p>Like SpaceX, Blue Origin is working on payload launches and reusable orbital launch vehicles, as well as on moon landing technology, to achieve what Mr. Bezos once called “low-cost access to space.” Blue Origin executives said recently that the company is close to blasting off into space with humans.</p>

<p>Mr. Bezos’ most extravagant notion, unveiled in 2019, is a vision of space colonies — spinning cylinders floating out there with all kinds of environments.</p>

<p>“These are very large structures, miles on end, and they hold a million people or more each,” he said, noting they are intended to relieve the stress on Earth and help make it more livable.</p>

<p>It’s probably good for space innovation that two billionaires are slugging it out and attracting all kinds of start-ups, investments and interest to the area. But all of their frantic aggression has been overshadowed of late by two spectacular efforts by NASA.</p>

<p>The two NASA missions delivered this week the kind of awe-inspiring moments that make one look up from the wretched news spewing out of our smartphones toward the stunning celestial beauty of the endless universe.</p>

<p>The first was the batch of images from amazing high-definition cameras on the Perseverance rover, a car-size autonomous vehicle that touched down in the Jezero Crater on Mars last week. The photographs are so sharp that you can zoom in close enough to look at the holes in the rocks on the surface and even get a pretty good sense of the dirt itself. The larger panorama is just as arresting, a desert scene that is breathtakingly alien while also feeling quite familiar.</p>

<p>I found myself staring at the scenes for an hour, marveling that I can see the details of an elegant wind-carved boulder from a distance of 133.6 million miles. The $2.7 billion Mars mission includes a search for signs of ancient Martian life, sample-collecting and the flight of a helicopter called Ingenuity.</p>

<p>But the imagery from Mars was quickly topped by an even older NASA mission to Jupiter by the Juno space probe, which entered the planet’s orbit in 2016. It did some very close fly-bys recently that are yielding perhaps the most stunning photos that we’ve ever seen of the planet.</p>

<p>Color-enhanced by citizen scientists from publicly available NASA data and images, the images show delicately swirling jet streams that look like a painting of quicksilver created by some space-faring artistic genius. I wish I could be riding on Juno myself to see up close the vast cyclones gather and the angry clouds seethe.</p>

<p>It was just a year ago that Juno sent back another image of Jupiter, looking like the best marble ever made, which NASA titled “Massive Beauty.”</p>

<p>Perhaps the fact that life on Earth feels so precarious at this moment explains, at least in part, why Mr. Bezos and Mr. Musk want to find ways to get off it.</p>

<p>But it’s important to keep in mind that these two men are just two voices among billions of earthlings. It is incumbent on the rest of us to take more control of how we are going to move into the brave new worlds beyond our own gem of a planet.</p>

<p>We have handed over so much of our fate to so few people over the last decades, especially when it comes to critical technology. As we take tentative steps toward leaving Earth, it feels like we are continuing to place too much of our trust in the hands of tech titans.</p>

<p>Think about it: We the people invented the internet, and the tech moguls pretty much own it. And we the people invented space travel, and it now looks as if the moguls could own that, too.</p>

<p>Let’s hope not. NASA, and other government space agencies around the world, need our continued support to increase space exploration.</p>

<p>I get that we have enormous needs on this planet, and money put toward space travel could instead be spent on improving lives here on Earth. But the risk to our planet from climate change means we have to think much bigger.</p>

<p>Keep in mind a hidden message that NASA engineers put onto the descent parachute of the Perseverance rover. The colors on the chute were a binary code that translates into “Dare mighty things.”</p>

<p>Coming from across the vast and empty universe, it was a message not meant just for Mr. Bezos and Mr. Musk. It was actually meant for all of us.</p>

<p>The second seat will&nbsp;be drawn from those who enter the raffle and are encouraged to donate to the hospital.</p>

<p>"It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure: a journey into outer space on the first all-civilian space flight," according to a website dedicated to the mission.</p>

<p>All three crewmembers "will receive commercial astronaut training by SpaceX on the Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragon spacecraft," as well as orbital mechanics and stress testing, including operating in micro- or zero gravity, the statement said.</p>

<p>SpaceX says that during the multi-day mission, the astronauts will orbit Earth every 90 minutes.</p>

<p>After the mission, the spacecraft will reenter the atmosphere for a water landing off the Florida coast.</p>

<p>In mid-November 2020, four astronauts were successfully carried into orbit by a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and boarded the International Space Station.</p>

<p>The Dragon capsule had just a week prior become the first spacecraft to be certified by NASA since the Space Shuttle nearly 40 years ago. Its launch vehicle is the reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the end of its missions, the Crew Dragon deploys parachutes and then splashes down in the water, just as in the Apollo era.</p>

<p>NASA turned to SpaceX and Boeing after shuttering the checkered Space Shuttle program in 2011, which failed in its main objectives of making space travel affordable and safe.</p>

<p>The agency will have spent more than $8 billion on the Commercial Crew program by 2024, with the hope that the private sector can take care of NASA's needs in "low Earth orbit" so it is freed up to focus on return missions to the Moon and then on to Mars.</p>

<p>In addition to the first commercial mission, SpaceX is scheduled to launch two more crewed flights for NASA in 2021, including one in the spring, and four cargo refueling missions over the next 15 months.</p>

<p>However, Tesla has hit another roadblock in the form of security malfunction and other technical problems due to which thousands of models of the company are being recalled both in the US and China.</p>

<p>Chinese regulators have summoned representatives of US electric car giant&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;after reported technical problems with their vehicles, notably concerning their safety, officials in Beijing said Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The news comes several months after two recalls of the company's vehicles in China, the world's largest car market.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Consumers have cited multiple problems, related to unusual accelerations, batteries catching fire, as well as with the remote update system," the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They were asked to strictly conform to Chinese laws and regulations" in order to "guarantee public security" and the "rights and legitimate interests of consumers", the regulator said.</p>

<p>Tesla&nbsp;will recall nearly 135,000 cars to repair a computer memory failure that could pose a safety risk, US regulators said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The electric car manufacturer notified the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the massive recall over the problem affecting the cars' touchscreen that could cause a loss of some features.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recall covers the 2012 to 2018 Model S sedans and the 2016 to 2018 Model X SUVs equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor,&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;said in its notification to NHTSA.</p>

<p>When the flash memory in the touchscreen reaches the end of its useful life, it "can cause failures of the center display software components, and may indirectly cause loss of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings and exterior turn signal lighting," the manufacturer said.</p>

<p>Tesla&nbsp;said it will repair the issue at no cost to car owners, starting in late March.</p>

<p>NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into the issue of backup camera failures in June 2020.</p>

<p>About 159,000 vehicles were affected by memory issues, according to NHTSA. However,&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;said the recall does not cover those that already were upgraded to the Intel Atom processor.</p>

<p>While vehicles can still be driven, and&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;said it was not aware of any accidents as a result of the issue, the failure "may increase the risk of a crash."</p>

<p>These red flags coincide with Tesla's debut in India with its Model 3 being available for sale in June this year. The electric car company is still finding its feet in the country, but if these issues persist, instead of catapulting to success the company will falter.</p>

<p>It offered mainland and Chinese-speaking users a rare space to dissect taboos across politics and society, a plurality of voices normally muted inside China by the Communist Party.</p>

<p>Then late on Monday, an error message appeared to Chinese users logging on without a VPN to establish a secure connection, a telltale sign that state censors had got hold of the debate.</p>

<p>Users of China's Twitter-like social media app Weibo began posting&nbsp;screenshots of a message the app displayed when they tried to open it which said a secure connection to the server could not be made.</p>

<p>"Under Xi, the ban was a matter of time," said Lokman Tsui, a communications professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, of the reflex to scrub unregulated social media sharpened under China's President Xi Jinping.</p>

<p>Users took to Clubhouse chatrooms and other social media platforms to lament the block, which closed a brief window for freewheeling exchanges in a country where overseas networks such as Twitter and Facebook have been banned.</p>

<p>Many Western social media apps including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are banned in China, where the local internet is tightly regulated and often censored of content that could undermine the country's ruling Communist Party.</p>

<p>Although Chinese versions of the global platforms have emerged and become part of daily life, Chinese users are aware that content posted on them is monitored and censored.</p>

<p>It is common for social media companies to wipe content considered politically sensitive, including protests and criticism of the government, with users devising measures like screenshots and deliberate typos to skirt censors.</p>

<p><strong>'Living a lie'</strong></p>

<p>On Clubhouse last Saturday, however, more than 1,000 users flocked to a chatroom on the mass incarceration of Uighurs and other Turkic-speaking Muslims in China's western Xinjiang region.</p>

<p>Rights groups believe at least one million people are incarcerated in camps in Xinjiang, but Beijing has said they are vocational training centres aimed at reducing the appeal of Islamic extremism.</p>

<p>At least three people identifying as Uighurs shared personal stories in the Clubhouse chat and several others said they were Han Chinese who had lived in Xinjiang.</p>

<p>A woman said her views changed after living abroad exposed her to more information on Xinjiang.</p>

<p>"I had only been living in a huge lie," she said.</p>

<p>But some struck a more defensive note, with a man countering that "re-education camps" were necessary.</p>

<p>Moderators allowed time for people to talk in the Chinese-language chatroom without interruption, in a conversation that only ended the following afternoon.</p>

<p>On Monday, more than 2,000 users gathered in another chatroom discussing the bloody crackdown on Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, a taboo topic in China.</p>

<p>One said the environment was "dangerous for both sides", referring to civilians and authorities, while another called it outdated to claim that students,&nbsp;who participated in the movement -- were easily "brainwashed".</p>

<p>People from Hong Kong and Taiwan also pitched in on, or moderated, China-related topics.</p>

<p>But the frank exchanges were not limited to big politics.</p>

<p>The night after the Xinjiang chat, in another room, gay men swapped explicit stories of booty calls.</p>

<p>Some talked about engaging in unexpected S&amp;M hook-ups, and others shared anecdotes about taking dates home only to be found out by their parents.</p>

<p>But the door soon slammed shut on the unfettered discussion.</p>

<p>The space for free online discussion has "been drastically reduced" since 2013, the year Xi became president, added Emilie Frenkiel, associate professor at Université Paris Est Créteil, who researches political participation and representation in China.</p>

<p>But she added that the chance for open discourse on sensitive topics with other Chinese-speakers like Taiwanese counterparts "even though very risky, is so rare that... many are still willing to seize it".</p>

<p>A search for "Clubhouse invites", previously for sale on a Chinese online marketplace, no longer turns up results.</p>

<p>Since the ban, Chinese speakers returning to the app discussed ways to circumvent the "Great Firewall", and a chatroom ironically praising a pro-Communist Party editor continues defiantly.</p>

<p>But the wider lament was for the end of a precious space for debate which flickered but was never allowed to flare.</p>

<p>"I came here because it did not have speech censorship," one user said.</p>

People from Hong Kong and Taiwan also pitched in on, or moderated, China-related topics. But the frank exchanges were not limited to big politics. The night after the Xinjiang chat, in another room, gay men swapped explicit stories of booty calls. Some talked about engaging in unexpected S&M hook-ups, and others shared anecdotes about taking dates home only to be found out by their parents. But the door soon slammed shut on the unfettered discussion. The space for free online discussion has "been drastically reduced" since 2013, the year Xi became president, added Emilie Frenkiel, associate professor at Université Paris Est Créteil, who researches political participation and representation in China. But she added that the chance for open discourse on sensitive topics with other Chinese-speakers like Taiwanese counterparts "even though very risky, is so rare that... many are still willing to seize it". A search for "Clubhouse invites", previously for sale on a Chinese online marketplace, no longer turns up results. Since the ban, Chinese speakers returning to the app discussed ways to circumvent the "Great Firewall", and a chatroom ironically praising a pro-Communist Party editor continues defiantly. But the wider lament was for the end of a precious space for debate which flickered but was never allowed to flare. "I came here because it did not have speech censorship," one user said.

<p>In a complaint filed at the Alameda County Superior Court,&nbsp;Randeep Hothi, a University of Michigan graduate had accused Musk of triggering an online hate campaign against him.</p>

<p>Hothi drew Musk's wrath two years ago due to a couple of incidents he claims were harmless. However, Musk called him a liar and complained about him to an online tech editor.</p>

<p>He was confronted by a security guard in February 2019 when he went to do research in Tesla's sales centre in California. Two months later, he spotted a Tesla test car while driving and took its pictures, which he later posted online.</p>

<p>Elon Musk accused&nbsp;Hothi of almost killing Tesla employees when he was trying to drive away from the sales centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Citing sources, the media house claimed that during SpaceX's first high-altitude test flight of its Starship rocket, the space company violated the terms of the launch license.</p>

<p>SpaceX's Starship rocket had ended up exploding while attempting to land after a successful test launch.</p>

<p>The Starship rocket in question was a 16-storey-tall prototype of the heavy-lift launch vehicle which is being developed by Musk's company with the aim to carry human beings and almost 100 tons of cargo to the moon and Mars in the future.</p>
