Two months after the social media giant announced a companywide hiring freeze, Twitter has undergone a massive layoff. As per a report by Techcrunch, the firm has laid off a whopping thirty per cent of its talent acquisition team today (July 8th). Except for the most important positions, Twitter is at the moment halting the majority of hiring and backfilling. The company spokesman announced that employees will receive severance compensation, however, details of the severance were not provided. As per the Wall Street Journal, some 100 employees have lost their livelihoods. Due to the fall in hiring, the remaining recruitment team will be prioritised.

Twitter's massive layoff leaves 30% without a job!

Elon Musk said Thursday that he was helping combat falling birth rates after it was reported that he had twins last year with an executive at one of his companies. "Doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis," tweeted the billionaire tech entrepreneur, who has fathered 10 children, as reported by AFP.

"A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilization faces by far," Musk added.

He posted another tweet that read: "I hope you have big families and congrats to those who already do!"

The comments came a day after online outlet Insider reported that Musk had twins with 36-year-old Canadian Shivon Zilis, an executive at Neuralink, Musk's brain-implant maker.

She has also worked at other Musk companies including OpenAI and electric car manufacturer Tesla, Insider said.

In April, Zilis and Musk filed a petition with a Texas court for the children to "have their father's last name and contain their mother's last name as part of their middle name," Insider reported, referring to court documents obtained by the publication. The petition was granted in May, the site said.

The babies, which Insider says were born in November, arrived just weeks before Musk, 51, and music artist Grimes had their second child via surrogate. They welcomed a baby girl named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk -- although the parents will mostly call her Y. In total, the chief of Tesla and SpaceX has fathered 10 children, one of whom died shortly after birth.

In May, Musk tweeted a graphic from the Wall Street Journal showing that the average number of babies a US woman has in her lifetime fell from more than 3.5 in 1960 to a little over 1.5 in 2021. He noted that it was below the 2.1 level that is needed for a generation to replace itself. "USA birth rate has been below min sustainable levels for ~50 years," Musk wrote alongside.

Musk says doing 'best' to boost birth rates, after fathering twins last November

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as per reports last year secretly fathered twins with a senior official of one of the businesses he co-founded. Business Insider reports that the clandestine pregnancy took place late last year in November 2021, and as per documents obtained by the news outlet, Musk and Shivon Zilis – one of Neuralink's top executives, even filed a petition to change the children's names so that they have their father’s last name and contain their mother’s last name as part of their middle name.” While the twins' names remain unknown, in May a Texas judge approved the petition.

Just a day after Elon Musk's email to Tesla executives about a 10 per cent job cut and how he feels 'super bad' about the US economy got leaked, US President Joe Biden in what could be seen as a rare rebuke responded "Lots of luck on his trip to the moon". Biden made the remark while speaking to the press on the stronger-than-expected job growth in the United States in May as he also brushed aside criticism of his handling of inflation.

On Friday, when asked by reporters to remark on Musk's comments about United States' economy, the President said that while the Tesla CEO is talking about that companies such as Ford are looking to hire more people as they invest in electrical vehicles.

The dizzying decline that marks the steepest six-month drop ever for the global billionaire class adversely affected the world’s 500 richest people.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, governments and central banks unleashed unprecedented stimulus measures but the present erosion of wealth is a sharp departure from the previous two years.

Although billionaires made a fortune during the pandemic, they are now losing altitude fast with policymakers now raising interest rates to combat elevated inflation.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk is the wealthiest man on the planet with a net worth of $208.5 billion followed by Amazon’s Bezos with a $129.6 billion net worth and Bernard Arnault with a $128.7 billion fortune.

On Thursday, fifteen Black former or present Tesla employees filed a complaint against the electric vehicle manufacturer. They allege that they were the targets of racist abuse and harassment in the company's factories. According to the lawsuit filed in a California state court, the workers said they were frequently the target of inappropriate, racist remarks and actions by coworkers, managers, and human resources personnel. Reuters reports that the lawsuit added that the automaker's "standard operating procedures include blatant, open and unmitigated race discrimination," and that the harassment mostly took place at Tesla's Fremont, California factory. The complainants alleged that the harassment included the use of the terms "nigger," "slavery," or "plantation," as well as sexual remarks.

According to the lawsuit, some of the plaintiffs were even denied promotions or given jobs that required the most physical labour at Tesla.

In recent months, at least ten lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer, including one from a California civil rights organisation, alleging widespread sexual harassment and racial discrimination.

A Tesla shareholder has also filed a lawsuit this month, accusing Elon Musk, the company's CEO, and the board of directors of promoting a poisonous workplace atmosphere and ignoring employee complaints.

In one of the more public cases involving Tesla, a Black factory worker had accused Tesla of racial discrimination. Former elevator operator Owen Diaz claimed in his 2017 complaint that he was subjected to a hostile work environment at Tesla's Fremont, California, assembly facility, which includes racist slurs, caricatures, and swastikas.

A jury last October awarded Diaz $137 million. However, a federal judge ruled in April that Tesla was liable to Diaz for discrimination, but the judge reduced the award to $15 million because he felt that the $137 million was excessive. Diaz's rejected this settlement, due to which a federal judge in California also ordered a new trial on Monday on the damages Tesla owes him.

Despite allegations of workplace misconduct, Tesla claims that it has measures in place to deal with it and denies that any wrongdoing has taken place.

To expand broadband offerings to commercial airlines, shipping vessels and trucks, the US Federal Communications Commission has authorise Elon Musk's SpaceX to use its Starlink satellite internet network with moving vehicles.

Echoing plans outlined in SpaceX's request for approval early last year, the FCC said in a statement that Starlink has long sought to grow its customer base to enterprise customers in the potentially lucrative sectors.

Since 2019, SpaceX has steadily launched some 2,700 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit and with a fast-growing constellation of internet-beaming satellites in orbit it has amassed hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

Twitterati react to Elon Musk's absence on Twitter

Battery shortages and supply disruptions from China have hit multi-billionaire Elon musk's Tesla motors. Musk said that Tesla is losing billions of dollars at its new factories because of supply chain snags.

Elon Musk: Factories losing billions | Plant production affected by supply chain disruptions

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the company's new Germany and United States factories are " gigantic money furnaces" which are "losing billions of dollars" due to battery shortages and China's supply disruptions. The rigid COVID-19 restrictions under China's zero-Covid policy have made it increasingly difficult for manufacturers. Talking to Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley, Musk said that "both Berlin and Austin factories are gigantic money furnaces right now. It's really like a giant roaring sound, which is the sound of money on fire." He further added that the plants are "losing billions of dollars right now. There's a ton of expense and hardly any output."

According to him since the gigafactories opened earlier this year they've been struggling to increase production. The Austin factory produces only a "tiny" amount of cars.

One reason, according to Musk, is that the company is having trouble increasing the production of its new "4680" batteries and that the tools needed to build its traditional 2170 batteries are "locked in port in China."

"This is all going to get fixed real fast, but it requires a lot of attention," Reuters reported.

He also said that Tesla's Berlin factory is in a "slightly better position" because it started with using traditional 2170 batteries for cars built there.

In China, authorities locked down a number of cities including the shipping, financial, and manufacturing hub Shanghai. Musk said that this was "very, very difficult" for Tesla.

The filing also said that the board thinks that selling Twitter to the Tesla CEO is “fair to, advisable and in the best interests of Twitter and its stockholders.”

Twitter’s board of directors urges shareholders to approve Elon Musk takeover bid

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the proposed $44 billion takeover of social media platform Twitter remains held up by "very significant" concerns over the number of fake users. It has been a point of contention between Musk and the Twitter board for quite some time now and although Musk was allowed to examine the eternal data, he is still not satisfied with the results as of now. During a virtual town hall meeting, Elon Musk reportedly told Twitter employees that he wants the social media app to have a billion users while applauding TikTok for being entertaining, as well as China’s WeChat for keeping people engaged.

There are 229 million daily active users on Twitter till the first quarter of 2022.

The Verge, citing employees who heard the remarks, reported that Musk wants Twitter to replicate the success model of TikTok and WeChat in order to target one-billion users and that the app should offer more utility and make sure “people are very entertained and informed”.

He also made a comparison with WeChat, the super app in China that mixes social media with payments, games, and even ride-hailing.

“There’s no WeChat equivalent outside of China,” Musk was quoted as saying after joining 10 minutes late to the virtual meeting via his phone on Thursday.

“You basically live on WeChat in China. If we can recreate that with Twitter, we’ll be a great success.”

He also reportedly praised TikTok’s algorithm for not being “boring,” saying “we could hone Twitter in the same way to be interesting.”

He specifically placed emphasis on Twitter being better at surfacing news.

“I think Twitter can be much better about informing people of serious issues,” he was quoted as saying.

When asked about Twitter’s potential in five to 10 years, Musk said the company should be “contributing to a stronger longer lasting civilization where we are better able to understand the nature of reality.”

Elon Musk to Speak at Twitter town hall to address Twitter staff concerns

Elon Musk, who is in a process to acquire social media giant Twitter, will be interacting with Twitter employees this week for the first time. This will be Musk's first Town Hall meeting with employees after announcing USD 44 billion offer to acquire Twitter in April.

The news, first reported by Business Insider, comes after Twitter said last week that it anticipated a shareholder vote on the sale by early August.

Reuters quoted a source who confirmed upcoming Town Hall meeting citing an e-mail from Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Musk will take questions directly from Twitter employees.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed that Musk would attend the company all-hands meeting this week.

Twitter employees have expressed concerns about the takeover by the billionaire whose erratic behaviour they fear, can destabilise the company.

Back in April, Agrawal was seen quelling employee anger during a company-wide meeting where staff demanded answers to how managers planned to handle an anticipated mass exodus prompted by Musk.

Last week, Musk warned Twitter that he might walk away from his deal to acquire the company, if it failed to provide the data on spam and fake accounts that he seeks.

Tesla India policy executive quits after company puts entry plan on hold

Electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc on Friday proposed a three-to-one stock split, making its shares more affordable following recent sell-offs of the most valuable automaker.

The company also said Oracle Corp co-founder Larry Ellison, a friend of Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, will not stand for re-election to Tesla's board when his term ends at this year's shareholder meeting.

Ellison is among the top investors who have promised funding toward Musk's $44 billion acquisition of social media firm Twitter Inc.

Shares of Austin, Texas-based Tesla rose more than 1 per cent in extended trading on Friday. They have fallen nearly 40 per cent since Musk unveiled his stake in Twitter in early April, hurt in part by a strict lockdown in Shanghai that has affected Tesla's production.

Shareholders will vote on Tesla's proposed stock split on August 4. If approved, it would be the company's first such action after a five-for-one split in August 2020.

Tesla said the split would enable its employees to "have more flexibility in managing their equity" and make its stock "more accessible to our retail shareholders."

Alphabet Inc, Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc have also recently split their shares.

While a split has no bearing on a company's fundamentals, it could buoy the share price by making it easier for a wider range of investors to own the stock.

Tesla will also ask shareholders to vote to reduce its board of directors' terms to two years from three. If approved, the terms would be staggered over two years.

UNION

Meanwhile, proposals by Tesla shareholders include corporate governance-related items such as the right of employees to form a union and Tesla's efforts to prevent sexual harassment and racial discrimination.

"In 2021, the National Labor Relations Board upheld a 2019 ruling that Tesla illegally fired a worker involved in union organizing, and that the CEO had illegally threatened workers regarding unionization," according to a stockholder proposal cited in Tesla's filing.

In March, Musk invited labor union United Auto Workers (UAW) to hold a vote at Tesla's California factory. But "Tesla does not have any formal policy commitments to respect the right to freedom of association, nor has it demonstrated how it would effectively operationalise such a commitment," the proposal said.

Tesla's board advised a vote against the proposal, saying Tesla recently increased the base pay for its manufacturing jobs and it is "actively engaged" in protecting employees' rights.

Shareholders also proposed an annual report on Tesla's efforts to prevent sexual harassment and racial discrimination after it was hit by a string of lawsuits.

A California civil rights agency filed a lawsuit accusing Tesla of failing for years to address widespread racist conduct at its Fremont assembly plant.

Tesla said it does not "tolerate discrimination, harassment, retaliation or any mistreatment of employees in the workplace."

Another resolution asked Tesla to evaluate the "impact of Tesla's current use of arbitration on the prevalence of harassment and discrimination in its workplace."

Shareholders also called on the company to report its polices to address perceived lack of gender and racial diversity at its board.

Tesla said the split would enable its employees to "have more flexibility in managing their equity" and make its stock "more accessible to our retail shareholders." Alphabet Inc, Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc have also recently split their shares. While a split has no bearing on a company's fundamentals, it could buoy the share price by making it easier for a wider range of investors to own the stock. Tesla will also ask shareholders to vote to reduce its board of directors' terms to two years from three. If approved, the terms would be staggered over two years. Another resolution asked Tesla to evaluate the "impact of Tesla's current use of arbitration on the prevalence of harassment and discrimination in its workplace." Shareholders also called on the company to report its polices to address perceived lack of gender and racial diversity at its board. One of the most common links to the website is https://elon-x2.live/, which invites people to double their money by sending Bitcoin or Ethereum to the digital-wallet addresses advertised.

The scammers made $243,000 (£194,000) in just over a week. They change names and display pictures of the channels to make them look like official Tesla channels, an American automotive and clean energy company headed by Elon Musk.

Youtube blocked these channels after being alerted and said, "We have strict Community Guidelines prohibiting scams, including Impersonation and hacking."

Tesla owner Elon Musk recently slammed the video streaming platform ‘YouTube’ over unnecessary advertisements on their platform. “YouTube seems to be nonstop scam ads” Elon Musk Tweeted on Tuesday.

Musk targeted YouTube over the number of ads the platforms deliver to the viewers, calling it all a scam. Soon after the tweet was published it gathered a lot of attention from the audience. Fans agreed to Musk and asked him to buy YouTube in addition to his Multi-Million Dollar Twitter deal.
