The chief executive officer (CEO) of Tesla took to Twitter to express his views on the topic by elaborating on an email that was apparently sent to the employees on his company. According to a report on Bloomberg, Musk made it clear that work from home is not an option for Tesla employees and they will have to go to office for minimum 40 hours per week.</p>

<p>Although Musk did not directly confirm the authenticity of the email, he responded to a query from a user on Twitter by said "They should pretend to work somewhere else".</p>

<p>Billionaire Elon Musk has posted an interesting tweet. The tweet, devoid of words, is just a cartoon featuring what appears to be&nbsp;Elon Musk's caricature and the iconic blue bird which is the emblem of Twitter.</p>

<p>The tweet shows Elon Musk opening door of the cage that appears to previously confine the blue bird. The door to freedom is open but the bird appears startled, scared and very much inside the cage, apparently not wanting to come out. While a cartoon can have many interpretations, the one posted by Elon Musk almost gives an impression that despite his efforts to set the Twitter bird free, the scared bird itself is dragging feet.</p>

<p>"The Twitter board has not embraced Elon Musk and his vision for Twitter. So the fact that his ally has been removed from the board is not surprising," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh.</p>

<p>When Musk offered the price of USD 44 billion to acquire Twitter, the board of the social media giant had initially had sought to adopt a 'poison pill' strategy which would limit Musk's ability to raise stake in Twitter. However, the board later unanimously accepted his buyout offer.</p>

<p>Wednesday's vote to block re-election of Durban may indicate skepticism amog sharholders of Elon Musk's willingness to pay what he offered.</p>

<p>However, another meeting has been scheduled and investors are expected to overwhelmingly approve the deal.</p>

He said in a statement “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”</p>

<p>While the famous First Amendment Right appears straightforward on paper, its interpretation has been a source of contention among Americans since the rule was ratified. Because it's such a complicated and nuanced topic, it's understandable that many people are unsure what "free speech" actually protects. &nbsp;This article tries to explain how practical the promise of establishing Free Speech on Twitter is and also digs deep into the business impact that can take place after this historic acquisition.</p>

<p>Many people are echoing Musk's "public square" or "town square" argument to demand freedom of expression on all social media arguing that any speech that occurs in a public arena qualifies for First Amendment protection. Many have blamed that Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google and YouTube are suffocating free expression by shutting down accounts that encourage violence or propagate misinformation, including that of former President Donald Trump's personal account.</p>

<p>Key to note is the unusual positive sentiment from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia showing people’s angst against authoritarian governments who use the platform to track opponents and spread disinformation. The negative comments largely focused on how an elite white man (Musk) who is detached from real issues like Apartheid, can never take a real stand for suppressed people with his promise of “Free Speech”.</p>

<p>Another analytical output is the word cloud. It is a basic but effective visual representation object for text processing that displays the most frequently used words in larger, bolder letters and with varied colors. The lesser the importance of a term, the smaller it is.</p>

<p>From the sentiment score and the word cloud it is evident that there is polarised perception on Musk’s Free Speech, almost equal numbers either side showing that there is no bias towards a particular sentiment.</p>

<p><strong>What does it mean to have freedom of speech?</strong></p>

<p>With some exceptions, speech in a traditional or designated public forum is protected. The right to use some inflammatory terms and phrases to convey political ideas is a part of freedom of speech. However, a person's right to express himself freely in a private setting, such as a store or on a company-run social media site, is not protected by the Constitution. Because they are publicly discussing their thoughts online in those venues, many users may consider their favorite social networks to be public forums.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, courts have decided that social media platforms are private and that hosting other people's speech does not make them public forums. In reality, if the government tried to restrict Facebook or Twitter's ability to decide what content is indeed allowed on their platforms, it would be infringing on those firms' First Amendment rights.</p>

<p><strong>Free speech means different things to different people&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Twitter is utilized by people all across the world, and different nations have different free speech laws. Only 43% of people in all countries support legal protection for words that are insulting to minorities, while 39% support banning statements that are offensive to their religion or beliefs. Tolerance for statements supporting same-sex partnerships ranges from nearly universal approval (91%) in Denmark and Sweden to less than a third in Pakistan (27%) compared to only 16% and 18% in Turkey and Kenya respectively.</p>

<p>Musk's problem will be dealing with tweets from every other country on the planet, none of which guarantees free speech as vigorously as the United States. The European Union has warned him that new laws forbidding disinformation will be imposed on Twitter. Musk will need to think hard on what to do with Moscow, Tehran, and Kabul, all of which use Twitter to spread anti-US propaganda without reciprocity. These governments are all staunch anti-free-speech absolutists who, if given the chance, would silence all but their ruling classes around the world.</p>

<p>On the other hand, what to do about US foes on Twitter may be a true problem. This has previously been pointed out by Musk's detractors, including Jeff Bezos who indicated that the world's richest man might not be as principled as a free-speech absolutist when it comes to China. Beijing utilizes Twitter to spread its propaganda and perspectives but censors Twitter and does not accept any alternative viewpoints on Weibo. Most governments' preferred weapons of choice these days are words, so handing Beijing the one-way megaphone of Twitter is akin to handing your opponent your guns in a hot conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Musk’s track record</strong></p>

<p>Musk himself has minimal tolerance for speech that is unpleasant to him or to his companies or those that reflect employee criticism of the workplace (as evident via his tweets, public speeches, and regulations at the firms that he leads). Musk has a lengthy history of censoring or penalizing anyone who publicly criticizes a project or practice at Tesla Inc. or SpaceX. Nondisclosure agreements and arbitration clauses must be signed by employees to prevent them from suing their company in court. Twitter was started in 2006, and by 2010, it had a user base of 54 million people. There will be around 400 million users in 2021. Facebook and YouTube are behemoths in comparison. With an estimated 2.8 billion users, Facebook is quickly catching up to YouTube, which has 2.3 billion users. WhatsApp has a user base of 2 billion people. Instagram has one billion users, TikTok has 800 million, and Snapchat has 300 million. Size is an important factor when the company decides to drive advertising revenues and derive monetisation.</p>

Only 43% of people in all countries support legal protection for words that are insulting to minorities, while 39% support banning statements that are offensive to their religion or beliefs. Tolerance for statements supporting same-sex partnerships ranges from nearly universal approval (91%) in Denmark and Sweden to less than a third in Pakistan (27%) compared to only 16% and 18% in Turkey and Kenya respectively. Musk's problem will be dealing with tweets from every other country on the planet, none of which guarantees free speech as vigorously as the United States. The European Union has warned him that new laws forbidding disinformation will be imposed on Twitter. Musk will need to think hard on what to do with Moscow, Tehran, and Kabul, all of which use Twitter to spread anti-US propaganda without reciprocity. These governments are all staunch anti-free-speech absolutists who, if given the chance, would silence all but their ruling classes around the world. On the other hand, what to do about US foes on Twitter may be a true problem. This has previously been pointed out by Musk's detractors, including Jeff Bezos who indicated that the world's richest man might not be as principled as a free-speech absolutist when it comes to China. Beijing utilizes Twitter to spread its propaganda and perspectives but censors Twitter and does not accept any alternative viewpoints on Weibo. Most governments' preferred weapons of choice these days are words, so handing Beijing the one-way megaphone of Twitter is akin to handing your opponent your guns in a hot conflict. Musk’s track record Musk himself has minimal tolerance for speech that is unpleasant to him or to his companies or those that reflect employee criticism of the workplace (as evident via his tweets, public speeches, and regulations at the firms that he leads). Musk has a lengthy history of censoring or penalizing anyone who publicly criticizes a project or practice at Tesla Inc. or SpaceX. Nondisclosure agreements and arbitration clauses must be signed by employees to prevent them from suing their company in court. Hundreds of Tesla employees have complained of racist, sexist, other sorts of harassment, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions while under Musk's leadership. Many have also claimed retaliation as a result of speaking up about issues. Meanwhile, Musk publicly mocks others on Twitter, with more than 80 million followers and a fan base that he can enrage, from a local health official during the early days of the pandemic to Twitter's current CEO, Parag Agrawal. Twitter beyond free speech Despite having a far less user base than other leading social media platforms, many small businesses and brands are particularly successful on Twitter. Content makers use the platform to grow their fan base. However, the site as it currently stands lacks many features that draw businesses to sites like Facebook, which is a more seller-friendly platform. Twitter was started in 2006, and by 2010, it had a user base of 54 million people. There will be around 400 million users in 2021. Facebook and YouTube are behemoths in comparison. With an estimated 2.8 billion users, Facebook is quickly catching up to YouTube, which has 2.3 billion users. WhatsApp has a user base of 2 billion people. Instagram has one billion users, TikTok has 800 million, and Snapchat has 300 million. Size is an important factor when the company decides to drive advertising revenues and derive monetisation. Going forward, Musk buying over Twitter should encourage businesses and entrepreneurs to join the platform even more. Elon Musk warns of political attacks on him and plans to ‘vote Republican’

<p>“I strongly supported Obama for President,” Elon Musk tweeted late last month, part of the spree of ideological comments accompanying his continuing takeover of Twitter, “but today’s Democratic Party has been hijacked by extremists.” Around the same time, he set the social-media platform ablaze by reposting a cartoon showing a stick figure comfortably on the center-left in 2008 redefined as a right-wing bigot by 2021 because the left-wing stick figure had raced way off to the left. Then this week, he expressed the same kind of thought in the abbreviated style for which the site is famous: “Twitter obv has a strong left wing bias.”</p>

<p>And now, at last, we have the news that he’s likely to allow Donald Trump to tweet freely once again.</p>

<p>All of these comments and promises align the country’s richest man with the rightward side in our culture war. But though I don’t know Musk — I’ve never interviewed him or hung out with him in any secret billionaire lair — I think I know enough about him, and I know enough Silicon Valley people like him, to suggest that neither his tweeted self-descriptions nor the criticisms being lobbed his way capture what’s distinctive about his position and worldview.</p>

<p>A term like “conservative” doesn’t fit the Tesla tycoon. Even “libertarian,” while closer to the mark, associates Musk with a lot of ideas that I don’t think he particularly cares about. A better label comes from Virginia Postrel, in her 1998 book “The Future and Its Enemies”: Musk is what she calls a “dynamist,” meaning someone whose primary commitments are to exploration and discovery, someone who believes that the best society is one that’s always inventing, transforming, doing something new.</p>

<p>If you think this sounds uncontroversial, think again. First, the dynamist may not care where novelty and invention spring from. Unlike the purist libertarian, he might be indifferent to questions of public versus private spending, happy to embrace government help if that’s what it takes to get the new thing off the ground — and happy to take that help from regimes like Communist China no less than from our own. And he may be willing to risk much more than either the typical progressive or the typical conservative for the sake of innovation. Political principle, social stability and moral order are all potentially negotiable when discovery alone is your North Star.</p>

<p>For many people, dynamism is contingent — on how invested you are in the world as it is, whether you stand to lose or benefit from innovations, and where your moral intuitions lie. (I am personally a dynamist about Musk’s Mars colony but not Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse; flying cars, yes, sex robots, not so much.) Even in the tech world, your appetite for dynamism depends on where you stand: If you’re lucky enough to work for one of Silicon Valley’s near-monopolies, the new powers of the age, you may not be that interested in further churn or change.</p>

<p>Musk himself may yet evolve into that kind of comfortable monopolist, but for now, pending the IPO for MarsCorp in 2047, he remains a dynamist in full. And seen in this light, his recent transformation from Obama Democrat to progressive foil makes perfect sense in light of the transformations that liberalism itself has undergone of late.</p>

<p>Liberalism in the Obama era was an essentially dynamist enterprise not because liberals were absolutely committed to capital-S Science but because those years encouraged a confidence that the major technological changes of the 21st century were making the world a more liberal place. Whether it was social media shaking Middle Eastern autocrats, the Obama campaign running circles around its Republican opponents with online organizing or just the general drift leftward on social issues that seemed to accompany the internet revolution, progressives around 2010 felt a general confidence that technological and political progress were conjoined.</p>

<p>Ever since Trump bent history’s arc his way, however, that confidence has diminished or collapsed. Now liberals increasingly regard the internet as the zone of monsters and misinformation, awash in illiberalism, easily manipulated by demagogues, a breeding ground for insurrectionists. And if digital technology has become particularly suspect, via the transitive property, so has the larger idea of innovating your way out of social or environmental problems — empowering the part of the environmental movement that wants to tame capitalism to save the planet, for instance, at the expense of the part that imagines taming climate change with fleets of Teslas and nuclear power plants.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the values underlying dynamism — above all, the special pedestal given to free thinking and free speech — are also more suspect within liberalism today. In their place is a new regulatory spirit around culture as well as economics, a how-much-is-too-much attitude toward the circulation of potentially dangerous ideas, a belief in institutions of scientific and intellectual authority but not necessarily institutions devoted to wide-open inquiry.</p>

<p>Just as a dynamist might, at the extreme of the orientation, prefer a monarchy that protects innovation over a democracy that discourages it, some of today’s progressives are making the same move in reverse: If democracy is endangered by technological change and unfettered free speech, then so much the worse for free speech. The important thing is to save democratic self-government, even if you have to temporarily take the “liberties” out of the American Civil Liberties Union or put away your John Stuart Mill.</p>

<p>Whatever else Musk wants with Twitter — and obviously you should assume that he wants to make a lot of money — this seems like the ideological trend he hopes to resist or halt: the liberal retreat from dynamism, the progressive turn toward ideological regulation, the pervasive left-wing fear that the First Amendment and free speech are being weaponized by authoritarians and need some kind of check.</p>

<p>So now the question: If this was your ambition — setting aside whether you think it’s admirable or dangerous — would buying Twitter make sense?</p>

<p>The affirmative theory holds that because Twitter is both an essential digital town square and a place particularly populated by well-educated liberals, if Musk can make it succeed with a lighter-footprint approach to content moderation, from a dynamist perspective he might hope to accomplish two goals at once. First, he would be simply sustaining an important space in which free debate can happen. <p>The more skeptical theory, on the other hand, suggests that Musk may be making a mistake somewhat characteristic of the Silicon Valley mentality and overestimating the importance of novel virtual spaces compared with the legacy institutions — East Coast, brick and mortar, academic and bureaucratic — that still give contemporary liberalism its actual shape and direction. That is to say, what you see on Twitter, the fads and mobs and performativity, may accelerate certain ideological transformations, but social media isn’t actually the place where these shifts are taking shape; it’s just the space in which the change becomes visible and legible to people on the outside.</p>

<p>So, for instance, if important media institutions are more doubtful about free speech than in the past, or if important academic fields are more likely to impose ideological loyalty oaths, or if important foundations and funders are creating a climate of intellectual conformity, a social media town platform is too far downstream of those changes to really help reverse them.</p>

<p>A free-speech-oriented Twitter can certainly surface individuals or even small-scale factions offering diversity and dissent. But institutions of employment and ambition will always matter most — there’s no app-based solution or simple blockchain fix if you think the Ivy League and the mainstream media have gone terribly astray. At some point you need to make change within those institutions themselves, start new ones — the Musk Schools! the Musk Herald-Tribune! the Musk Foundation! — or do both.</p>

<p>Since a big part of Musk’s success and wealth comes from looking for tech’s applications in the real world — meaning cars, rockets and tunnels, not just apps and tweets — it’s quite possible that he’s already considered all of this and that he has an ultimate vision for a Twitter as a virtual network that links reformed or revitalized institutions in the real world.</p>

<p>Or alternatively, maybe he believes that very soon the virtual will fully displace the world of bricks and bodies and that in buying Twitter he’s literally buying the digital real estate where his fellow dynamists will build the great institutions of tomorrow.</p>

<p>It’s one of dynamism’s strengths as a guiding ideology that it can inspire those kinds of leaps. But its weakness is usually the same one that doomed Icarus. Sometimes you leap and have a bird’s wings to bear you upward. Sometimes, though, all you have is their disintegrating feathers — or, still worse, not their plumage but their tweets.</p>

Then this week, he expressed the same kind of thought in the abbreviated style for which the site is famous: “Twitter obv has a strong left wing bias.” And now, at last, we have the news that he’s likely to allow Donald Trump to tweet freely once again. But though I don’t know Musk — I’ve never interviewed him or hung out with him in any secret billionaire lair — I think I know enough about him, and I know enough Silicon Valley people like him, to suggest that neither his tweeted self-descriptions nor the criticisms being lobbed his way capture what’s distinctive about his position and worldview. A term like “conservative” doesn’t fit the Tesla tycoon. Even “libertarian,” while closer to the mark, associates Musk with a lot of ideas that I don’t think he particularly cares about. A better label comes from Virginia Postrel, in her 1998 book “The Future and Its Enemies”: Musk is what she calls a “dynamist,” meaning someone whose primary commitments are to exploration and discovery, someone who believes that the best society is one that’s always inventing, transforming, doing something new. If you think this sounds uncontroversial, think again. First, the dynamist may not care where novelty and invention spring from. Unlike the purist libertarian, he might be indifferent to questions of public versus private spending, happy to embrace government help if that’s what it takes to get the new thing off the ground — and happy to take that help from regimes like Communist China no less than from our own. And he may be willing to risk much more than either the typical progressive or the typical conservative for the sake of innovation. Political principle, social stability and moral order are all potentially negotiable when discovery alone is your North Star. (I am personally a dynamist about Musk’s Mars colony but not Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse; flying cars, yes, sex robots, not so much.) Even in the tech world, your appetite for dynamism depends on where you stand: If you’re lucky enough to work for one of Silicon Valley’s near-monopolies, the new powers of the age, you may not be that interested in further churn or change. Musk himself may yet evolve into that kind of comfortable monopolist, but for now, pending the IPO for MarsCorp in 2047, he remains a dynamist in full. And seen in this light, his recent transformation from Obama Democrat to progressive foil makes perfect sense in light of the transformations that liberalism itself has undergone of late. Liberalism in the Obama era was an essentially dynamist enterprise not because liberals were absolutely committed to capital-S Science but because those years encouraged a confidence that the major technological changes of the 21st century were making the world a more liberal place. Whether it was social media shaking Middle Eastern autocrats, the Obama campaign running circles around its Republican opponents with online organizing or just the general drift leftward on social issues that seemed to accompany the internet revolution, progressives around 2010 felt a general confidence that technological and political progress were conjoined. Ever since Trump bent history’s arc his way, however, that confidence has diminished or collapsed. Now liberals increasingly regard the internet as the zone of monsters and misinformation, awash in illiberalism, easily manipulated by demagogues, a breeding ground for insurrectionists. And if digital technology has become particularly suspect, via the transitive property, so has the larger idea of innovating your way out of social or environmental problems — empowering the part of the environmental movement that wants to tame capitalism to save the planet, for instance, at the expense of the part that imagines taming climate change with fleets of Teslas and nuclear power plants. Meanwhile, the values underlying dynamism — above all, the special pedestal given to free thinking and free speech — are also more suspect within liberalism today. In their place is a new regulatory spirit around culture as well as economics, a how-much-is-too-much attitude toward the circulation of potentially dangerous ideas, a belief in institutions of scientific and intellectual authority but not necessarily institutions devoted to wide-open inquiry. Just as a dynamist might, at the extreme of the orientation, prefer a monarchy that protects innovation over a democracy that discourages it, some of today’s progressives are making the same move in reverse: If democracy is endangered by technological change and unfettered free speech, then so much the worse for free speech. The important thing is to save democratic self-government, even if you have to temporarily take the “liberties” out of the American Civil Liberties Union or put away your John Stuart Mill. Whatever else Musk wants with Twitter — and obviously you should assume that he wants to make a lot of money — this seems like the ideological trend he hopes to resist or halt: the liberal retreat from dynamism, the progressive turn toward ideological regulation, the pervasive left-wing fear that the First Amendment and free speech are being weaponized by authoritarians and need some kind of check. So now the question: If this was your ambition — setting aside whether you think it’s admirable or dangerous — would buying Twitter make sense?
