<p>Michael Macek, the director at St. Louis Zoo, said, "We are devastated. We ask for the community's thoughts and support during this difficult time."</p>

<p>The pathologist at the St. Louis Zoo found that Rani had preexisting heart problems. However, the zoo is still examining what contributed to her death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officials believe that the immediate cause of death might be related to a small dog running around in a non-public area near the elephant barn.</p>

<p>Rani was indoors having dinner and did not see the dog. But another elephant that saw the dog became agitated.</p>

<p>The Elephant Care Team members tried to catch the dog while moving the other elephants indoors. However, Rani became distressed inside the barn. She began to vocalise with the other elephants before collapsing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officials tried to revive her but failed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Rani passed, the Elephant Care Team spent time with her to say goodbye. Other elephants were also given time with her. The zoo officials said they calmed down quickly and are doing well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Later, the zoo officials caught the small dog and turned it into a local shelter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rani was five when she and her mother, Ellie, came to the St. Louis Zoo in 2001. Eight Asian elephants remain at the St. Louis Zoo, including six from three generations of the same family.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Rani was a special member of this elephant family group," Katie Pilgram-Kloppe, zoological manager of the River's Edge habitat at the zoo, said in a statement. "While growing up here in St. Louis, she learned from her mom, Ellie, how to be an amazing mother herself," Pilgram-Kloppe said.</p>

<p>There are less than 50,000 Asian elephants left in the wild, scattered in discrete habitats across 13 countries. Their future survival as a species is uncertain, with threats from poachers killing them for ivory, skin, and meat. Furthermore, the humans continue to intrude into the space where they roam.</p>

<p>The mighty creature was seen stomping his way down the SS18 road in the town of Amantea, Cosenza province, according to local media reports. In the video, it seems as though the elephant is heading towards a local supermarket called Eurospin, a popular supermarket in Italy.</p>

<p>In the brief clip, the driver can be heard laughing looking at the bizarre scene unfolding and saying: “He is going for a stroll! An elephant at the Eurospin!” The video has since garnered over 26,000 views&nbsp;on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;<br />

<p>According to local media reports, the animal, who was seen wandering through the Italian streets, had escaped from a nearby circus and due to the manager’s timely intervention was later taken back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The elephant was found in the supermarket parking lot where the circus boss intervened, ending his day of “freedom”, apparently without any major injuries to the people as well as the elephant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some local websites also reported that the elephant may have reached the store after being drawn there by the smells. Notably, elephants have a keen sense of smell and can detect sources of water up to 19 kilometres away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No damage was reported to people or to the elephant, according to the local media. Meanwhile, the officials contacted by the BBC avoided “addressing the elephant in the room and were unable to confirm the story.”</p>

<p>Many have denounced the use of animals in circuses on social media, a practice which has been banned in most countries. However, in Italy, a law was introduced&nbsp;last year&nbsp;to reportedly phase out the use of animals in circuses.&nbsp;<br />

The elephant was found in the supermarket parking lot where the circus boss intervened, ending his day of “freedom”, apparently without any major injuries to the people as well as the elephant. Some local websites also reported that the elephant may have reached the store after being drawn there by the smells. Notably, elephants have a keen sense of smell and can detect sources of water up to 19 kilometres away. No damage was reported to people or to the elephant, according to the local media. Meanwhile, the officials contacted by the BBC avoided “addressing the elephant in the room and were unable to confirm the story.” Many have denounced the use of animals in circuses on social media, a practice which has been banned in most countries. A rice-eating wild elephant has become a cause for concern in the two Southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. <p>It is often reported that wild elephants venture out into towns, raid crops and cause damage to property. However, this points to the larger issue of habitat destruction, towns and settlements coming up on forest fringes and natural vegetation not being available in abundance for wildlife.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While it is being claimed that this particular elephant killed a few people, there are no clear indications in this regard. However, the demands of the local people were taken cognisance of and the Kerala Forest Department planned to capture the wild tusker and turn him into a trained semi-wild elephant, a gruesome and painful process that takes months. Vehement opposition from activists and a court decision ensured that the only way ahead was to go for a translocation.</p>

<p>Finally, the tusker was translocated from Chinnakanal in Kerala's Idukki district to the Periyar Tiger Reserve (ferried a distance of nearly 80 km), close to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The entire operation was carried out by the Kerala forest department, with police vehicles ensuring the smooth movement of the convoy and avoiding any untoward incidents along the way. While a hostile reaction was anticipated, those living in the regions close to the Periyar Tiger Reserve (where the elephant was being released) had even performed a traditional 'Puja' to welcome the new inhabitant of the wild.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Barely a few days after being released in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the pachyderm ventured into the estates in the Megamalai range in Tamil Nadu's Theni district. Known to walk dozens of kilometres every day, wild elephants move across regions in search of food and water. Thanks to a radio collar around his neck, Forest department officials from both Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been able to monitor the elephant's location real-time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, during the wee hours, the tusker got back to his old ways and ventured close to a ration shop in Megamalai and attempted to break open a window, possibly to get hold of the rice stored within. Later, the tusker is said to have ventured back into the forest. Images from the area showed the tusker's giant footprints in the vicinity of the settlements and the ration shop. Carrying on the moniker from Kerala, those in Tamil Nadu refer to the wild tusker as 'Arisi Komban' (translates to rice tusker in Tamil).</p>

<p>Forest Officials from Theni in Tamil Nadu told WION that the radio collar placed on the elephant's neck is operational and the movement of the animal is being tracked both by radio telemetry and GPS. Those staying in the region have been advised to not venture out unnecessarily and particularly have been advised against venturing out late in the evenings. We have forest staffers who are monitoring the elephant's movement round-the-clock and alerting those in the region, the official added.</p>

It lived near the Devikulam forest range in the Idukki district for decades. However, locals in the area were demanding Arikomban’s removal from the site for months now. According to the government, Arikomban has killed seven people so far, apart from sporadically&nbsp;raiding local rice shops and causing a menace to the shopkeepers.</p>

To solve the issue, the Kerala Forest Department initially wanted to capture Arikomban and make him a permanent captive. However, the animal welfare organisations vehemently opposed the suggestion and moved to Kerala High Court.</p>

<p>The high court then formed a five-member committee to resolve the issue, which recommended the elephant be moved to another location where such human-wildlife conflict can be avoided. The committee suggested the authorities shift the elephant to the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in the Palakkad district. However, this sparked a protest by locals in the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Later, it was decided that Arikomban will be shifted to Periyar Tiger Reserve.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The condition of animals kept in zoos continues to worsen across Pakistan. In April 2020, a court ordered the only zoo in Pakistan's capital Islamabad to shut down after poor facilities and mistreatment of the animals there were revealed. It is the same zoo where the elephant Kaavan was kept.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kaavan, an Asian elephant, was airlifted to retirement in Cambodia in a project spearheaded by US popstar and actor Cher.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In March, Karachi zoo's Golden Tabby tiger died at 21 and according to sources, it had been ill for a long time and apparently failed to receive proper care.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some 206 birds and 76 other animals died in 2017, while 122 birds and 45 other animals perished in 2018. Multiple deaths were also reported in the Peshawar zoo since it was inaugurated in February 2018.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our estimates reduce uncertainties in total glacier mass loss, provide important data for glacio-hydrological models, and therefore also support the water resources management in this sensitive mountain region," researchers said in the paper.</p>

<p>Satellites can measure the surface of the lake, but are unable to track conversion of ice into water below the lake surface. Researchers say that this is reason behind the underestimation of glacial loss.</p>

A research that was initiated&nbsp;in an&nbsp;effort to pinpoint the contributing factors to this decline reveals pressures of extreme polygamy may be driving southern elephant seals to early death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science comprised of these 14,000 southern elephant seals on Macquarie Island in the south-western Pacific. One of the key findings of the study is that male and female survival rates are roughly comparable when they are juvenile. However, after age eight, male survival quickly declined, falling to about 50%, while female survival remained constant at 80%.</p>

<p>The research reveals that the largest and fattest male seals, known as beachmasters, have an edge when it came to reproduction as they are able to compete for female access better.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sophia Volzke, a PhD student at the University of Tasmania and the study's primary author said, “They can only get food from the ocean." “When they come on land [to breed] they’re competing with other males for access to females.</p>

<p>“They need to have fat resources stored to be able to fight other males and survive on land without eating anything for weeks or months at a time.”</p>

<p>Volzke said the species demonstrates "extreme polygyny". A small percent of beachmasters control harems of females. One enormous beachmaster might have a harem with up to 100 females, she said. In cases when the harems are so large, they could allow a younger man to serve as an assistant beachmaster.</p>

<p>According on the topography of the beach and the size of the harem, a truly long beach is more likely to have a number of small harems. Just 4% of men work as beachmasters. Males that are still maturing are under pressure to acquire weight fast due to competition. <p>Experts are stumped and “powerless” as three Asian elephants died in a month after a deadly virus swept through Zurich’s zoo. Experts said that they don’t know how to stop the spread of a virus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last Saturday, a five-year-old elephant cow, Ruwani, died after succumbing to Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) or Elephantid betaherpesvirus 1. It is a type of herpesvirus, which can cause a highly fatal hemorrhagic disease when transmitted to young Asian elephants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from Ruwani, two more elephants also died. At the end of June, the first one to fall victim was a two-year-old bull Umesh. Just days after that, his eight-year-old sister Omysha also died.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts have also noted that the herpesvirus lies latent in nearly all elephants — both in the wild and in captivity. In some cases, the virus suddenly becomes deadly and kills its victims.</p>

<p>The zoo in Switzerland’s largest city now has only five elephants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zoo curator Pascal Marty told AFP that in captivity, this virus is “the main cause of death for elephants between two and eight years.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, there is no vaccine. Antivirals exist but experts have noted that they are not very efficient.</p>

<p>The would-be rescuers rushed onto the spot but were unable to do anything in the presence of the frantic mother elephant. So, they decided to anaesthetise the pachyderm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, upon being given the tranquiliser, the mother elephant too tumbled into the hole, though only partially. She then had to be lifted out with the help of a digger. She had to be administered CPR, however, the reason behind this remains a bit unclear. In the video multiple people can be seen jumping on her chest, putting pressure there so as to revive her.</p>
