The elephant&nbsp;skull&nbsp;was found buried along with 87&nbsp;stone tools which were used by prehistoric humans and other materials which were excavated under Dr Ghulam Bhat at the University of Jammu.

The skull was studied by an international team of scientists from the Florida Museum of Natural History, the British Museum, the University of York, and the Natural History Museum (London), along with the University of Helsinki's Dr. Steven Zhang to find out the age and evolutionary context of this megaherbivore. The paper was&nbsp;published&nbsp;in the&nbsp;Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

"From the general shape of the skull, it's quite apparent that the elephant belonged to Palaeoloxodon, or straight-tusked elephants, among the largest land mammals that ever lived. Full-grown adults easily stood around 4m tall at the shoulder and weighed 9–10 tonnes," said Zhang, who is a palaeontologist from the University's Department of Geosciences and Geography.

"Yet what's puzzled experts for some time is that the Kashmir skull lacks a thickened, forward-projecting crest at the skull roof which typifies other Palaeoloxodon skulls found in India," he added.

In recent research, it was found that the skull crest in these elephants turned more prominent with sexual and developmental maturity.&nbsp;

"From the size, the wisdom teeth and a few other telltale features of the skull, it is evident that the animal was a majestic bull elephant in the prime of its life, but the lack of a well-developed skull crest, particularly in comparison with other mature male skulls from Europe and from India, tells us we have a different species on our hands here," Zhang said.

According to the research team, the features of the Kashmiri skull matched another obscure skull from Turkmenistan which belonged to a distinct species called Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus.

"What's always been puzzling about the Turkmen skull is that, besides the lack of a prominent crest at the skull roof, its other features are highly similar to the already well-known European species, P. antiquus. And this led a number of experts to suggest that the Turkmen specimen is simply an aberrant individual of the European species," Zhang stated&nbsp;

"But with the Kashmir skull added to the mix, it becomes clear now that the two specimens can be theorized to represent a&nbsp;distinct species&nbsp;that we previously knew very little about, with a broad distribution from Central Asia to the northern Indian Subcontinent," explained Dr Advait Jukar, the lead author of the study.&nbsp;

After measuring protein decomposition in the Kashmir Palaeoloxodon skull's tooth enamel and observing the stone tools found alongside, the team suggested that the skull belonged to a species distinct from other Eurasian Palaeoloxodon, which might be Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus.&nbsp;

Animal care experts and veterinary staff at Houston Zoo will closely monitor Tess to learn how effective this vaccine is for elephants, the Houston Zoo said in a release after administering the injection on 18 June.

The mRNA vaccine was created by Baylor College of Medicine.&nbsp;It was developed by Dr Paul Ling at Baylor College of Medicine in collaboration with Houston Zoo's veterinarians and elephant care team.

"The vaccine’s effectiveness will be measured by evaluating antibody levels in her blood while monitoring for specific side effects or adverse reactions such as injection site swelling or allergic reaction," the Houston zoo statement said. 
 
Tess, mother to Tucker (19), Tupelo (13), Tilly (6), and Teddy (3) and grandmother to Winnie (3), is currently doing well post-vaccination, it added.

Trials, mainly on horses, had shown that the mRNA vaccine can induce antibodies against the virus with no adverse side effects.&nbsp;

The zoo intends to vaccinate more elephants in its herd and monitor them.

There are also plans to send the vaccine to elephants in other parts of the world both in captivity and in the wild.

A vaccine for African elephants is also on the anvil.

Colossal Biosciences, a de-extinction company, has announced a significant stem cell breakthrough in elephants, potentially bringing researchers one step closer to reviving long-extinct woolly mammoths.

Colossal's Woolly Mammoth team has announced a breakthrough: they have derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), as quoted in a statement to Live Science. iPSCs are reprogrammed cells capable of becoming any cell type in the body, allowing researchers to study woolly mammoth adaptations and test gene edits without harming living animals.

"These cells definitely are a great benefit to our de-extinction work," Eriona Hysolli, the head of biological sciences and mammoth lead at Colossal Biosciences, told Live Science.

Hysolli emphasised the importance of these stem cells, as they can uncover the cellular and genetic mechanisms responsible for key traits that enabled woolly mammoths to thrive in the Arctic. These traits include shaggy hair, curved tusks, fat deposits, and a dome-shaped cranium.

<h2>Groundbreaking development in elephant stem cell that can help in woolly mammoth de-extinction</h2>

iPSCs also open a path to creating elephant sperm and egg cells, which are essential for mammoth de-extinction, in the lab.

Previously, obtaining elephant iPSCs was difficult due to their unique gene pathway, which differs from that of other species. Researchers successfully addressed this challenge by suppressing core genes known as TP53, which regulate cell growth and prevent indefinite cell duplication, explained Hysolli.

"One of the things that we had to overcome for elephant cells is that they do have this expansive TP53 pathway," Hysolli said. "We had to suppress this pathway via two means in order to get these iPSCs, so we had to go through a multi-step process in order to achieve them."

<h2>Why does this breakthrough matter?</h2>

The breakthrough could aid in understanding early development in elephants, a crucial step in woolly mammoth de-extinction. If researchers create a woolly mammoth embryo by combining ancient mammoth DNA with elephant cells, they'll need to implant it into an elephant surrogate for a 22-month gestation period.&nbsp;

Hysolli stressed the importance of comprehending elephant developmental biology due to the complexity of their lengthy gestation.

According to Hysolli, creating a woolly mammoth embryo is now less challenging, but ensuring the birth of a healthy calf will require additional time and effort.&nbsp;

The team continues to explore alternative methods for generating elephant iPSCs and refining those they have recently developed. The breakthrough involving iPSCs, slated for publication on the preprint database bioRxiv, is pending peer review.

“Regarding the permission for capturing, translocating or human-wildlife conflicts, the minister informed that Section 11 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 empowers the State Chief Wildlife Warden to take such actions required to manage such conflicts," said an official.
