Researchers from Kyushu University and the University of Tokyo, Japan, studied the seismic activity in great detail and have identified a link between fault strength and the magnitude of an earthquake.

The study has been published in Nature Communications. The researchers propose that the strength of the fault affects the b-value, and consequently the chances of a major earthquake.&nbsp;

Professor Satoshi Matsumoto, the first author of the study, explains, “The b-value is a very important constant in seismology that characterizes the relationship between earthquake frequency and size."

A lower b-value indicates that there is a higher chance of bigger earthquakes.

“If there is a low b-value, this means there is a higher proportion of large earthquakes, while a high b-value means there is a higher proportion of smaller earthquakes.”

The b-value differs from location to location and changes over time. It often decreases right before a major earthquake.

“Simply put, these weak faults will likely slip before a large amount of stress builds up, which means that they aren’t able to release a large amount of force,” says Matsumoto.

While the researchers admit that it might never be possible to predict an earthquake, the latest observations might help them move closer to the “holy grail” of forecasting major tremors.&nbsp;

The geologists associated with the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS HVO) said that the Upper East Rift Zone of Kilauea volcano started experiencing a “seismic swarm” on June 27 afternoon, as hundreds of earthquakes jolted.&nbsp;

According to the USGS, there was an increase in seismic activity by about 30 events an hour.

More than 500 earthquakes were detected between Saturday and Sunday which occurred beneath the Upper East Rift Zone and in its surrounding areas.

After the escalation in the earthquake activity, it “slightly” eased on Sunday morning, as per the USGS HVO.

As per the USGS HVO, previous eruptions occurred beneath the upper East Rift Zone near Pauahi Crater and Hi’iaka Crater.&nbsp;

“Any substantial increases in seismicity and/or deformation could result in a new eruptive episode, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time,” the USGS stated.

Doctoral candidate in marine geophysics at the University of Washington Zoe Krauss said that the area is not part of the subduction zone, which is a region where one tectonic plate has been sinking into the mantle below another plate.

"Mid-ocean ridges aren't actually capable of producing that large of earthquakes, not too far above a magnitude five. This is not going to trigger 'the big one' on the subduction zone," said Krauss, while speaking to Live Science.

Scientifically, the earthquakes have been interesting since they can reveal details regarding ways in which the ocean floor pulls apart and the new crust gets formed, said Krauss.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the study's author Zhongwen Zhan said, “We don't think the region is gearing up for another supervolcanic eruption, but the cooling process may release enough gas and liquid to cause earthquakes and small eruptions. For example, in May 1980, there were four magnitude 6 earthquakes in the region alone.”

Dozens of seismometers were placed by Zhan and his team across the Eastern Sierra region to capture seismic measurements through a process called distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). The team covered 62 miles of the caldera with cables for capturing underground snapshots. 
 
For more than a year and a half, the cable was used by the team for measuring more than 2,000 seismic events. Those measurements were then processed by a machine learning algorithm and developed into a resulting image, which showed every quake's location. 
 
An expert on the Long Valley Caldera Emily Montgomery-Brown, who was not part of the study, speaking to the LA Times stated that the swarms of earthquakes began in 2011. 
 
After the quakes, a ground deformation occurred in which the land had risen and the tremors had dissipated in 2020, which left the region quiet and stable. In 2018, a study was carried out in which it was found that 240 cubic miles of magma was present below the surface of Long Valley Caldera. 
 
“And so even if the Long Valley magma reservoir is moribund, there are other pockets of magma in the area,” stated Montgomery-Brown.

California's supervolcano shows signs of activity, over 2,000 earthquakes rumble beneath valley

An earth-shattering spell of earthquakes in Afghanistan has forced residents to move to makeshift tents, with office buildings and mosques being deserted as people pray and plead to&nbsp;God for stopping the destruction.

Fearing the recurrence of natural disasters that have killed at least 1300 people in the country in recent days, people have resorted to living in the open.

According to health officials in the Taliban-ruled country, people have been suffering from trauma after the earthquakes took place.

“As most of the victims of the earthquake most likely have injuries, all the residents of Herat city are mentally affected,” said Qadim Muhammadi, a senior doctor in Herat’s provincial hospital.

Dozens of Herat citizens go to the hospital to get treatment because of anxiety and trauma, reported Tolo News.

The WHO has also acknowledged the widespread fear, with Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus saying that the Herat province had essentially become a “tent city.”

“Herat city has become a tent city, families are sleeping in open spaces in parks, in small tents, as they are afraid to be inside because of aftershocks and more earthquakes. The WHO Afghanistan team is supporting partners to set up health tents where people can get health care services,” he said.
