The foreign minister addressed various topics including nine years of the Modi government, his journey from being a bureaucrat&nbsp;to a politician,&nbsp;India's&nbsp;relations with China&nbsp;and Russia, the BBC documentary row, and more.

Applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government's foreign policy, he said that if one looks at India's global stand, it is very much higher and quite strong. He added that strategically, there's much more clarity in the country's thinking and operations now.&nbsp;

"I think the expectation is that India would have a voice, have an opinion, if necessary they would have more than that and this could be climate change, counter terrorism, black money. If you look at the big it could be maritime security, even today trade, investment that domain, technology."

The foreign minister also mentioned the importance of 'Vaccine Maitiri,' which helped in shaping global views about India.

When asked about the country's recent and upcoming partnerships like QUAD and others, he said, "India is going up and is going well...Why do we have so many partnerships? Because we get alsong with so many people. How we are to manage different partnerships? Maybe because we are good at it."

Speaking on China, he said that generally, India's relationship with major powers is good, except for Beijing as it has violated several agreements between the two.&nbsp;

He also gave an example of India's relationship with Russia and Europe.

Talking about India's relationship with Russia, he described it as "extraordinarily steady and has been steady through all the turbulence in global politics." In the case of Europe, it is the 'best' it ever had.&nbsp;

The External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is en route to the United States for an 11-day visit from 18-28 September 2022. The EAM is set to attend meetings of several groupings including the foreign ministers' meetings of Quad nations and BRICS nations. Dr Jaishankar will also represent India this year at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

During the visit, the EAM is also scheduled to meet with senior officials of the incumbent US President Joe Biden's administration&nbsp;including the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Additionally, he is also set to hold several other plurilateral, trilateral and bilateral meetings.&nbsp;

A statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of External Affairs indicated that during his visit Dr Jaishankar will be in New York from September 18 to 24, where he is set to lead the Indian delegation for the “high level week” at the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).&nbsp;

The EAM will also address the 77th UNGA at forenoon on September 24, said the statement. The theme for this year’s UNGA is “A watershed moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges.” Subsequently, while he is in New York, Dr Jaishankar will also participate in plurilateral meetings of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) grouping which includes India, Australia, Japan and the US and the conference for the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) grouping.

“In keeping with India’s strong commitment to reformed multilateralism, EAM will be hosting a Ministerial meeting of the G4 (India, Brazil, Japan, Germany), as well as participating at the High Level Meeting of the L.69 Group on ‘Reinvigorating Multilateralism and Achieving Comprehensive Reform of the UN Security Council’”, the MEA said. The L.69 Group is a grouping of 42 developing nations from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Small Island Developing States, that are focused on UNSC reform.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Dr Jaishankar will hold three key trilateral meetings – one with France and Australia, the other with France and UAE and also meet his counterparts from Indonesia and Australia. He will also hold bilateral meetings with his foreign ministers of the G20 nations and UNSC member states and so on, the MEA indicated.&nbsp;

On September 24, in order to commemorate the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, the EAM will address a special event called “India@75: Showcasing India UN Partnership in Action”. The event will reportedly highlight India’s development journey and its contributions to South-South Cooperation. It is also expected to be addressed by the President of the 77th UNGA, foreign ministers of several nations and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) administrator.&nbsp;

During his visit, the EAM will reportedly also meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the incoming President of UNGA, Csaba Kőrösi. Dr Jaishankar will also participate in meetings for the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) grouping, India-Presidency Pro Tempore CELAC and India-CARICOM.&nbsp;

“Upon completing his 77th UNGA-related engagements, the EAM will visit Washington D.C. from 25-28 September for bilateral meetings with US interlocutors. His program includes inter alia, discussions with his counterpart Secretary of State Antony Blinken; senior members of the U.S. Administration, US business leaders, a round-table focused on S&amp;T and interaction with the Indian Diaspora,” said the MEA.&nbsp;

According to the statement, the ministry believes that the EAM’s visit will enable “a high-level review of the multifaceted bilateral agenda and strengthen cooperation on regional and global issues to further consolidate the India-US strategic partnership”. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The foreign ministers meet, which takes place just before the summit, will take place from July 7-8th. Indonesia is the chair of the G20 this year, and will host the summit in Bali, the only Hindu majority province of the Muslim majority country, in mid-November.

This year's G20 meeting has been dominated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with western nations not keen on presence of the Russian President Putin at the summit. Indonesia as the chair decided on countries' participation and wants all member countries of the grouping to be present at the summit, including Russian President.&nbsp;

In the last few days, Indonesian President Joko Widodo is seen engaging in active diplomacy even as he visited Ukraine's capital Kyiv and Russian capital Moscow. President Widodo was in Germany last week for the G7, and also held a bilateral with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the bilateral meet, they discussed the G20 chairmanship. India is the chair of the grouping for next year and will hold the summit in Delhi. In December, India will be chair of SCO, G20 &amp; UNSC.

India’s Jaishankar to take part in Indonesia G20 FMs Meet

A 21-year old Indian student was killed after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds following a shooting at the entrance of a subway station in Canada's Toronto city while he was on his way to work, according to police here.

The victim, identified as Kartik Vasudev, was shot on Thursday evening at the Glen Road entrance to Sherbourne TTC station in St James Town.

Vasudev received medical attention from an off-duty paramedic and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the Toronto Police Service said in a statement.

The homicide squad of the Toronto Police Service has taken over the investigation.

Investigators would like to speak to any witnesses that were in the area at the time, as well as any drivers or businesses that have camera footage, the police said.

We are shocked &amp; distressed at the unfortunate killing of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in a shooting incident in Toronto yesterday, the Consulate General of India wrote in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday.

We are in touch with the family and will provide all possible assistance in the early repatriation of mortal remains," it said.

Vasudev's brother told CP24 news channel he was a student at Seneca College and was taking the subway to his job when he was killed.

India stressed on Wednesday that the Code of Conduct on the South China Sea should be fully consistent with the relevant UN convention and that the negotiations on it should not prejudice the legitimate rights and interests of the nations that are not a party to the discussions.

In a virtual address at a meeting of the East Asia Summit (EAS), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also highlighted the growing convergence of approaches on the Indo-Pacific region among different members of the grouping.

Separately, Jaishankar also addressed a meeting of the ASEAN-India foreign ministers during which he touched upon a range of issues, including connectivity, and said India is looking forward to an early review of the "trade-in goods agreement".

Jaishankar described the discussions at the ASEAN meeting as "substantive and fruitful".

In a series of tweets, he said much of India's interests and relationships now lie to its east, which is a testimony of its ties with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).

The external affairs minister also emphasised accelerating connectivity projects and particularly talked about the trilateral highway and Kaladan projects.

The ambitious India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway is expected to boost connectivity among the three countries.

The Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project is being viewed as India's gateway to Southeast Asia.

Jaishankar also sought convergence between the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) proposed by India.

On the coronavirus pandemic, he said India and ASEAN are "strong partners in Covid response: medicines or oxygen, equipment or logistics".

Jaishankar also proposed 2022 as the ASEAN-India friendship year for the 30th anniversary of the ties between the two sides.

The ASEAN is considered to be one of the most influential groupings in the region, and India and several other countries including the US, China, Japan and Australia are its dialogue partners.

The ties between India and the ASEAN have been on an upswing in the last few years with the focus being on ramping up cooperation in the areas of trade and investment as well as security and defence.

The EAS is the premier forum in the Asia-Pacific region to deal with issues relating to security and defence.

India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar will visit the United Kingdom tomorrow for the G7 Foreign Minister's meet. The United Kingdom has invited India for an in-person G7 foreign ministers meeting, for which FMs of Australia, South Korea, South Africa, and the Chair and Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have also been invited.&nbsp;

"External Affairs Minister will be visiting London from May&nbsp;3-6,&nbsp;2021 to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting, at which India has been invited as a guest country. He will thereafter undertake a bilateral visit to the UK," the ministry of external affairs release said.

The meet takes place in London from May 3&nbsp;to 5&nbsp;and will be the first physical G7 FMs meet to take place in over two years. The last such G7 FMs meet took place in Dinard and Saint-Malo, France in April 2019.&nbsp;

Ahead of the visit, EAM and UK Foreign secretary Dominic Raab both spoke to each other on a range of issues including the ongoing covid pandemic in India. The UK is sending supplies to India to deal with the devastating covid pandemic. These supplies include 495 oxygen concentrators, that can extract oxygen from the air, 120 non-invasive ventilators, and 20 manual ventilators.

The visit by EAM will not only see him taking part in G7 FMs meet but also many bilaterals as well. US Secretary of state Antony Blinken will also travel to London and a bilateral between the two is likely. This will the first physical meet between the 2 ministers since the new Biden administration took charge.

G7 is a grouping of 7 industrialized countries--Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, US &amp; UK - plus the EU. The key focus of the meet obviously will be on the ongoing covid crisis that continues to ravage large parts of the world but also Climate Change with the UK set to host the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) meet later this year.

The meet will also talk about the agenda of the upcoming G7 leaders meet under UK's chairmanship. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the 47th G7 summit that will take place in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, the UK from 11th to 13th June. India has been regularly invited for the G7 summit since 2019--first by France, then in 2020 by the US, and now by the UK this year. It includes the India-Afghanistan friendship dam, the Afghan Parliament and 202-km Phul-e-Khumri transmission line that is providing electricity to Kabul city.&nbsp;

More than 65,000 Afghan students have studied in India under various scholarships and currently 15000 students are studying.

Jaishankar pointed out, "Afghanistan's growth has been constrained by its landlocked geography...and through Chabahar port we have provided alternative connectivity to Afghanistan."

India has sent 75,000 MT of wheat to Afghanistan via India-built Chabahar port to deal with the COVID-19 crisis this year. It has also given 20 tonnes of life-saving medicines and equipment to deal with the COVID crisis.

Expressing concern over the "increasing level of violence in Afghanistan", he reiterated India’s call for "an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire."

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's US visit caught attention due to an abruptly cancelled meeting with a US lawmaker.

Jaishankar was scheduled to meet the leaders of the US Senate as well as the leadership of the US House of Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC).

The Senate visit went ahead as planned but the meeting with the Congress leaders was abruptly cancelled due to the presence of Indian-American lawmaker Pramila Jayapal.

Jayapal has been a vocal critic of the current government in India. She even pushed for a resolution asking New Delhi to lift all restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir.

India has maintained that any matter related to Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and has rejected any foreign intervention.

On Thursday, Jaishankar had said that he has "no interest" in meeting Jayapal.

"I am aware of the draft resolution. I don`t think it is a fair understanding of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir or fair characterisation of what the Indian government is doing. I have no interest in meeting her," he said.

"No Foreign Minister of any independent country should be pressurised into meeting such politicians with their own agendas," MEA sources said as quoted by news agency ANI.

54-year-old Jayapal had introduced the resolution, co-sponsored by Republican Steve Watkins, that urges India to lift the communication clampdown, release political detainees and "preserve religious freedom for all residents" in Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;

The Senate visit went ahead as planned but the meeting with the Congress leaders was abruptly cancelled due to the presence of Indian-American lawmaker Pramila Jayapal. Jayapal has been a vocal critic of the current government in India. She even pushed for a resolution asking New Delhi to lift all restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir. India has maintained that any matter related to Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and has rejected any foreign intervention. On Thursday, Jaishankar had said that he has "no interest" in meeting Jayapal. "I am aware of the draft resolution. I don`t think it is a fair understanding of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir or fair characterisation of what the Indian government is doing. I have no interest in meeting her," he said. "No Foreign Minister of any independent country should be pressurised into meeting such politicians with their own agendas," MEA sources said as quoted by news agency ANI. 54-year-old Jayapal had introduced the resolution, co-sponsored by Republican Steve Watkins, that urges India to lift the communication clampdown, release political detainees and "preserve religious freedom for all residents" in Jammu and Kashmir.
