A woman working with a charity that seeks to help people with alcohol and drug issues was caught drinking and driving in Cheshire, a county in England. The Telegraph reported that Eliza Loftus crashed her car into a tree and went hiding in the bushes after a night of drinking on April 7.

She has now been handed a 40-month ban from driving and has to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

The alcohol level in her blood was found to be almost three times over the legal limit. Loftus is the marketing director and chief fundraiser at Be Well Stay Well.

The organisation offers counselling to alcohol and drug addicts in Nantwich. The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to drink driving at Crewe Magistrates’ Court last week.

The court was told that on the said night, Loftus lost control of her white Ford Ka just after midnight while going around a bend and smashed the car into a tree. Fearful of getting caught by the police, she then abandoned the vehicle and went hiding in the bushes.

Tara Thomas, the prosecutor, told the court that when the police arrived at the scene, a person told them that Loftus was hiding in the bush.&nbsp;

The police officer approached the area and, "approximately 20 metres away from the crash, and shouted ‘police, come out’," Thomas said.

"A female, who is the defendant before the court, emerged and said, ‘I am sorry’."

She came out, "unsteady on her feet" and was tested for alcohol in her blood. The test found 215 mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, nearly three times the legal limit of 80 mg.

Her lawyer, Patrick Kelly, told the court that she "lost control" around a bend after leaving a pub following an argument with friends.

"It is right that she was hiding behind a bush but that was due to her panic and nothing else," he said.

"When police called her she immediately came out."

Loftus has now turned to the charity she works for to get help for alcoholism. Kelly told the court, "She also works with charity Be Well Stay Well, supporting people with addictive personalities or who have fallen into addiction."

"She has now turned to them herself and has received assistance from them."

Notably, Loftus was earlier convicted in April 2022 for drunk driving and then the following month for driving under the influence of cannabis.

Italy is in the midst of testing a programme to offer free taxi rides for party-goers in a bid to curb incidents of drunk driving and deadly accidents. This is part of an initiative commissioned by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, the pilot project for which will run until mid-September.&nbsp;

<h2>About the initiative</h2>

So far, the pilot programme has only been launched at six nightclubs around the country, from Puglia in the south to Tuscany and Veneto in the north. In line with the scheme, if a person appears too drunk when they exit the venue, they will be subjected to an alcohol test.&nbsp;

Based on the test, if the person’s blood alcohol level is deemed above the legal limit, a taxi will be called to take them home and it will be paid for by the government, with funding for the scheme being provided by the transport ministry.&nbsp;

The announcement was also made on the Italian lawmaker’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account, where he wrote, “Free taxis at the end of the night for those who have drunk too much,” and called it a “practical initiative”.&nbsp;

The initiative is “aimed at preventing danger and tragedy on the roads”, adding that fines and drink-driving laws were not enough to combat the problem. 
 
He added, “The idea, born after meetings at the ministry on road safety with influencers and content creators, provides for the payment of transport to those who, undergoing the alcohol test at the exit of the discos, exceed the limit set for getting behind the wheel.”

“To stop the slaughter (on the roads), we need to involve everyone in terms of prevention,” said Salvini, on X, last week.&nbsp;

<h2>A somewhat welcomed step</h2>

According to local media reports, the initiative was welcomed and largely well-received. “I think it’s a good idea because there are so many accidents. People go out dancing and they drink. This experiment could finally contain the problem,” a young man named Marco told the newspaper Il Gazzettino, outside the nightclub near the town of Jesolo.&nbsp;

However, the scheme has also been criticised by social media users, while responding to the lawmaker’s post on X. Some people on the microblogging app said that the scheme “rewards” excessive alcohol consumption.&nbsp;

“I’m so happy that people can now get wasted on alcohol without consequences and the state will pay for their transport,” said another person, on social media. 
 
While others appeared to resent that their taxes would contribute to such an initiative.&nbsp;“Knowing that the taxes I pay end up like this really makes me sick!” said another critic, on X.&nbsp;

Too drunk to drive back home? Italian government will offer a free taxi ride

While you might have heard of several drunk driving incidents, here is one that takes the cake. A heavily drunk woman was arrested for driving a golf cart on Florida’s busiest interstate on Saturday night. The 58-year-old woman was spotted by a semitruck driver driving the cart in the middle lane of Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

The arrest report says that the truck driver saw the woman passing out while driving the golf cart. The truck driver then steered the cart to the shoulder of the interstate using her truck.

Florida: Woman arrested for driving golf cart on interstate while drunk

Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was arrested late Saturday night for allegedly driving under the influence.He was detained in Napa County, California, at 11:44 p.m. on Saturday night and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol level of.08 or above.

He could face charges including driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 or higher, the report said.Pelosi’s bail was set for $5,000 for the two misdemeanors, records showed.

Tiger Woods apologised on Monday for his driving under the influence arrest, insisting that alcohol was not involved in the late-night incident. In a statement sent to USA Today, Woods, who was pulled over by police in Florida in the early hours of Monday, blamed the incident on a bad reaction to prescription medication. "I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions," Woods said in the statement. "I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved," the former world number one added. "What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn't realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly," the 41-year-old added. "I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. Sweden&#39;s youngest ever cabinet minister, who came to the country as a refugee from Bosnia, announced her resignation today after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol. 
 
Aida Hadzialic, 29, minister for secondary and adult education, revealed that she had been stopped by police in the southern city of Malmo and tests showed she had an alcohol level of 0.2 grammes per litre of blood -- just the level considered an offence in Sweden. 
 
&quot;That was the biggest mistake of my life... I will take responsibility. I announce my intention to resign from my ministerial post,&quot; an emotional Hadzialic told a press conference at government headquarters in Stockholm. 
 
&quot;I understand that a lot of people are disappointed in me. And I am angry with myself, and certainly I deeply regret it,&quot; added the young politician seen as the future of the Social Democrat party. 
 
Hadzialic was born in Bosnia and immigrated to Sweden at the age of five, in 1992, with her parents fleeing the war in the Balkans. She became involved in the Social Democrats youth movement in high school and went on to be elected a municipal councillor at age 23. Then in 2014 at 27 she became the youngest ever government minister in Sweden&#39;s history. 
 
She is not the only politician to have to dropped out since Sweden&#39;s political left returned to power two years ago. Deputy premier and environment minister Asa Romson from the Green party resigned in May after a series of gaffes, the last being to describe the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States as &quot;the accidents of September 11&quot;. 
 
Housing minister Mehmet Kaplan, of Turkish origin, had to step down in April after comparing Israelis to the Nazis, and Mona Sahlin, the national coordinator for protecting democracy against violent extremism, was forced to resign in May after media revealed that she had made false income declarations for her bodyguard to help him obtain bank loans.

New Delhi: The gruesome accident in Janakpuri area, in which two persons were killed by a drunk driver, was the second such case in the city this year in which the accused was slapped with a more stringent charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder instead of charge of causing death by negligence, which is bailable in nature. 
 
Earlier this year, in the Mercedes hit-and-run incident reported in north Delhi&#39;s Civil Lines area, the accused, who was four days short of 18 years on the day of the accident, was slapped with the same charge in the case which was initially registered under IPC Section 304 A (causing death by negligence). 
 
In todays incident, police claimed that they have adequate ground to register a case under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). 
 
&quot;In this case, the 21-year-old accused, who was in a highly inebriated state, was driving at a very high speed and did not stop his car after hitting the first person, who later died. 
 
&quot;He did not stop even after hitting two others and pulled over only after reaching a certain distance, chased by a patrol team, suggesting that the act was done with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death, but without any intention to do so,&quot; Joint Commissioner of Police (southwest) Dependra Pathak said. 
 
IPC Section 304 is a more stringent charge as it is non bailable and punishable with imprisonment for life or for a term which can extend upto 10 years, apart from fine, unlike IPC Section 304 A which is bailable in nature and punishable with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or both. 
 
However, in Janakpuri case, police have so far not come across any record of traffic violation against the accused, Rishabh, unlike the Mercedes case in which the 17-year-old boy was found involved in at least four cases in one year. 
 
But in the Mercedes hit-and-run matter, the minor, whose father was also booked for abetment to his crime, was not suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol unlike todays incident. 
 
In that case, the relatives of the 32-year-old business consultant who died in the incident, met Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma, following which the investigating officer of the case was changed and the charge was altered from causing death by negligence to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. 
 
Two persons, including an elderly man, who were out for morning walk were killed and another was critically injured after they were knocked down by a speeding car being allegedly driven by a 21-year-old student in a highly inebriated state in Janakpuri area. (PTI)
