As the protests continue to escalate in Iran, protesters took to the streets and continued marching into early on Friday (January 9) after the country’s exiled crown prince urged demonstrations, defying authorities despite widespread internet disruptions and cuts to international phone services.
Can the War Powers Resolution stop Trump?
The War Powers Resolution was brought in by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, to stop Trump from further escalating the conflict in Venezuela. Historically, it has never been able to stop any President from war. It needs to go through both the Senate and the House, and the House of Representatives is Republican-led, so it's not plausible. Even if it goes through, Trump can veto it. Overriding a veto requires at least two-thirds of the majority in both the Senate and the House. So it had always been a symbolic act more instead of providing any comprehensive outcome.Trump has always opposed the act, calling it unconstitutional, as it undermines the authority of the President as the Commander-in-Chief. Read Also: Hours after Renee Nicole Good's death in ICE shooting, merchandise appears online

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has blamed the collapse of a proposed India–US trade deal on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While appearing on a podcast, Donald Trump's commerce secretary said that the trade deal did not materialise because Modi never made a personal call to the POTUS.
Modi to blame for India-US trade deal failure?
Speaking on the All In Podcast, Lutnick said the agreement was essentially ready but stalled because the final political outreach never happened. "I set the deal up," he said, adding that he had asked Indian officials to get Modi to call Trump, but "They (India) were uncomfortable with it. So, Modi didn't call."According to Lutnick, Washington had assumed India would be among the first countries to wrap up a trade agreement under Trump's second term. On that assumption, the US pushed ahead with negotiations with other nations at higher rates. Deals with Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam were concluded first, and at tariff levels that later complicated talks with New Delhi. Also read | US exits 66 orgs and treaties, including India-led International Solar Alliance"So that Friday left.
What now?
Lutnick said that the US has now "stepped back from that trade deal that we had agreed to earlier. Trade talks between the two nations fell apart in 2025, when Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, the highest rate imposed on any major economy. That included a 25 per cent retaliatory levy tied directly to India's continued purchases of Russian oil.

In a sweeping foreign policy move, Donald Trump has ordered the United States to withdraw from as many as 66 international organisations, most of them linked to the United Nations. The decision includes pulling out of a key UN climate treaty and marks one of the largest mass exits by the US from global institutions.

US President Donald Trump has raised fresh doubts about NATO’s commitment, questioning whether the alliance would come to America’s aid in times of need.

Donald Trump: Doubt NATO Will be There for US When Needed

US President Donald Trump had hinted at increasing the military budget by 50 per cent to $1.5 trillion, which would allow the US to build its “Dream Military”. The congressional approval for the year 2026 was $1 trillion. Trump suggested that the increased spending was necessary as the times are "troubled and dangerous". He also lauded the “tariffs” which have boosted the revenues would be able to cover the increased spending.

Since the attack on Venezuela, the Trump administration has taken an imperial tone. It had projected itself as the superpower of the Western hemisphere. It had claimed it would dictate "policy" in Venezuela. It also threatened to annex Greenland either by money or force, despite repeated pushbacks from Denmark and other NATO allies. Trump also, in a lengthy post, went after the “State Defence Contractors and the Defence Industry”. He clamped down on the industry for allowing massive stock buybacks instead of spending on infrastructure. He targeted the executive pay packages of the defence industry. He complained, “MILITARY EQUIPMENT IS NOT BEING MADE FAST ENOUGH.”

Trump, in the lengthy 322-word post, pointed out the malpractice of the Defence Contractors, who seek Federal Funding and help from Financial institutions, and spend exorbitant money on shareholders and their own paychecks through “Dividends, Stock Buybacks, and Over Compensation of Executives.”He specifically targeted the Defence Contractor Raytheon, which has been the least responsive to the necessities of the Department of War. He threatened to cancel all the contracts of Rayethon if it didn't fall in line. “Our Country comes FIRST, and they’re going to have to learn that, the hard way!” said Trump in a subsequent Truth Social Post. Trump's railing on the defence contractor Raytheon saw its share price plummet by over 10 per cent. Similar was seen with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Gunman dropping 8-10 per cent.

Trump's desire to increase Defence spending will need approval from Congress. The Republicans are calling Trump's aspiration a “good news story”. They have long argued for Pentagon funding at 5 per cent of the total GDP. According to a defence lobbyist quoted by Politico, Golden Dome and Golden Fleet are not possible without a bill of that size. However, experts at the Federal Budget watchdog, Taxpayers for Common Sense, claim that the math does not add up on Trump's spending, and Congress is about to approve a 13 per cent increase in Pentagon spending this year. The overall debt is over $38 trillion."We’re over $38 trillion in debt. We have real needs, at home and abroad, none of which will be easier to meet by hitting the gas pedal on the debt crisis," said Steve Ellis, President of Taxpayers for Common Sense. He asserted that the tariff will not offset the deficit, "the math doesn’t add up, he has also promised that revenue will be used to reduce the deficit, send $2000 checks to citizens, bailout farmers impacted by the trade war, and the list goes on."

The footage showed dozens of mourning relatives and coffins adorned with Venezuelan flags. Bouquets and wreaths, along with photographs of the dead, adorned the caskets, escorted by uniformed troops in formation. Previously, on Tuesday, Interim President Delcy Rodriguez had declared seven days of mourning for the victims.

Venezuela says about 100 people were killed in the US raid that captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, the first official toll since the operation. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the 'terrible’ attack also left a similar number of wounded.

Venezuela's Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello on Wednesday (Jan 7) revealed that about 100 people were killed in the US military operation that ended with the capture of president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in Caracas. This revelation marks the first official casualty figure from Venezuelan authorities since the US raid. "The attack on our country was terrible," he said, adding that Maduro and first lady Flores were also injured in the US operation. However, he said that they were now "recovering". Maduro and Flores were flown to New York and arraigned in federal court, where they have pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and related charges. US Discussing Options to Acquire Greenland Including Using Military, White House Says

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in her press briefing on Wednesday (January 7), said that the US has maximum leverage in the governance of Venezuela. “We're continuing to be in close coordination with the interim authorities, and their decisions are going to continue to be dictated by the United States of America,” Karoline Leavitt said during the press briefing. White House also said that there are currently no troops on the ground in Venezuela. When asked about the security of oil workers in Venezuela, the White House said that Trump reserves the right to use the US military if necessary. Trump is also going to meet some of the oil executives on Friday. "The meeting is on Friday, and it's just a meeting to discuss, obviously, the immense opportunity that is before these oil companies right now," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. Earlier in the day, the United States seized a second oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea, according to the US Southern Command. This marks a further intensification of Washington's crackdown on illegal maritime oil trafficking. The tanker, named M/T Sophia, was intercepted during a pre-dawn operation in international waters. US authorities have labeled the vessel as a stateless, sanctioned "dark fleet" ship allegedly engaged in illicit activities. The US Coast Guard has since taken control of the tanker and is escorting it to the United States, where further decisions will be made regarding its future. The White House also said that an oil tanker intercepted by US forces in the North Atlantic was not legitimately registered as a Russian vessel and was classified as stateless after falsely claiming a national flag. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the ship was part of a Venezuelan “shadow fleet” involved in transporting oil under sanctions. She said the tanker was seized under a judicial order, and as a result, its crew now faces potential prosecution. Also Read: 'You may be deported': US cautions international students against violation of laws. US officials highlighted that the tanker lacked a valid national registry at the time of its interception, leading to its designation as stateless under international maritime law. This seizure follows a months-long pursuit of a different tanker, previously known as Marinera. That vessel was targeted last month in the Caribbean for suspected involvement in transporting sanctioned oil linked to Iran and Venezuela. After evading an attempted boarding, the ship reportedly altered its course, changed its name, and re-registered under a Russian flag, after initially falsely claiming to be registered in Guyana.

Why Trump wants Greenland and whether the US could buy or seize it

France said on Wednesday it is working with allies in response to the United States' threat to take over Greenland, as Europe sought to address the ambitions of US President Donald Trump in the region. A US military move to seize Greenland from Denmark, a longtime ally, would jolt the NATO alliance and further strain relations between Trump ‌and European ‌leaders. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the issue would be discussed later in the day with his German and Polish counterparts. "We want to take action, but we want to do so together with our European partners," he said on France Inter radio. Leaders from major European countries and Canada have also voiced strong support for Greenland, stressing that the Arctic territory belongs to its people. Their statements came after Trump renewed his push to assert US control over the island, according to a report by Reuters.
Denmark has failed to adequately safeguard Greenland
Trump has again argued that Greenland is important to US military interests and claimed Denmark has failed to adequately safeguard it. The ‍idea, first raised during his initial term in 2019, has resurfaced, with the White House confirming on Tuesday that Trump is exploring ways to acquire Greenland, which include the possible use of military force, despite firm opposition from Europe. Barrot also indicated that a US military operation had been ruled out by a top US official. "I myself was on the phone yesterday with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (...) who confirmed that ‍this was not the approach taken ... he ruled out the possibility of an invasion (of Greenland)," he said. After the US military operation captured Venezuela's president had already sparked concerns, highlighting that Greenland might face a similar scenario. Following the attack on Venezuela, the island nation has continuously stated that it does not want to be included in the United States.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the issue would be discussed later in the day with his German and Polish counterparts. "We want to take action, but we want to do so together with our European partners," he said on France Inter radio.

Former US President Joe Biden earns a massive pension of $417,000, which is reportedly the largest amount for any president in US history. According to the National Taxpayers Union, the amount is “historically unusual”, even bigger than the sum of his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama.
Why is Biden receiving an unusually high pension?
According to the National Taxpayers Union, the large amount of pension is due to Joe Biden's long political career. He had served 44 years in public service, decades in the Senate and two terms as Vice President, before serving as President. Due to his long career in public service, he is eligible for a CSRS pension, which could be approximately $166,000 per year, including a small spousal benefit. He also earns a pension under the Former President Act Pension, which is equivalent to the pay of a Cabinet secretary (Executive Level I), approximately $250,600 annually. In addition to the pension money, he is entitled to taxpayer-funded allowances for office space, staff, equipment and travel. For 2026, this budget for Biden's office and support is reportedly over $1.5 million.
Trump’s wealth vs presidential salary
However, this comparison is futile with the US President Donald Trump's wealth.
