<p>Indian domestic cricket is divided into three formats like the international format with state teams being the primary participants. Apart from state teams, zonal and railways have also participated in the domestic cricket of India where they compete in the red-ball and white-ball formats. To compare, India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has not played a first-class match since December 2018, that is&nbsp;more than five years ago. Ishan Kishan, another player part of India’s ODI World Cup squad during their run to the final, also opted to focus on IPL and skip the Ranji Trophy season for Jharkhand, raising serious doubts on the future of domestic cricket in India. According to reports, a similar approach is being proposed for domestic cricket which will see players earn more during a domestic season and hence encourage them to prioritise it.</p>

<p>Currently, a player earns around $2400 (INR 2 lakh) per match in the Ranji Trophy. If he plays every match in the season and his team makes it to the final, he ends up with ten games. The match fee for the Vijay Hazare Trophy is $600 (INR 50,000) and for the Syed Mushtaq Ali $211 (INR 17,500). Considering what players earn during the IPL, this small amount has discouraged big-name players from competing in the tournament. However, an increase in pay from BCCI is likely to bring back the glory days of domestic cricket.</p>

<p>Also, the BCCI has now made it mandatory for players contracted to the board to compete in the domestic format if they are not available for selection for the national side. <p>BCCI has formed a three-member committee that includes Indian men's team head coach&nbsp;Rahul Dravid, National Cricket Academy chairman VVS Laxman and men’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar, to provide suggestions to improve and boost domestic cricket setup, according to a report in <em>Times of India</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The decision was taken at BCCI's Apex Council meeting on Monday (Mar 18) where concerns were raised about the challenges domestic cricket was facing in the country.</p>

<p>"There were a lot of issues that cropped up during the conduct of men’s domestic cricket, with a prominent problem being that a lot of games in north India, particularly during the Ranji Trophy, were washed out or heavily curtailed due to bad weather in December-January," a source was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Dravid, Laxman and Agarkar have been asked to give their suggestions to improve men’s domestic cricket," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Focus on domestic cricket</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, in recent months, BCCI has given additional focus on strengthening the domestic cricket setup in the country. The senior national team players have been advised to go back to the Ranji Trophy or other domestic tournaments when they are not playing for the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The likes of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer missed out on central contracts after they allegedly refused to play domestic cricket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Indian captain and 1983 World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar recently lauded the BCCI for announcing the incentive scheme for players playing 75 per cent of India's Tests both home and away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gavaskar added that a similar incentive scheme could be launched for domestic cricket which would automatically increase the participation and quality.&nbsp;</p>

Thakur picked up three wickets in the 19th over which throttled Sri Lanka's batting.</p>

<p>Thakur also stated that playing cricket continuously for the last two-three years has helped him to get better at his game.</p>

<p>"I feel, T20 is such a short format and it is always going to be up and down. The more you play, the more experience you get and you keep learning. Whereas, the five-day format is a more settled format and you have time to think about your game. But in T20, you have to make precise decisions," he said.</p>

<p>Thakur further credited his innings in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2018-as-ipl-begins-heres-a-throwback-to-all-pulsating-themes-of-previous-seasons-36446">IPL</a> and domestic cricket for giving him an edge in his performance, over the years.</p>

<p>"...Over a period of years, while practicing, I have been developing my skills and just brushing it up. I think by playing continuously for the last 2-3 years, in the IPL and domestic circuit, I am getting better," Thakur added.</p>
