To conduct the blood test, the scientists attempted to evaluate a combination of protein ratios&nbsp;found in human serum that can accurately detect the disease. The test measures&nbsp;tau protein 217 (or p-tau217 for short) and amyloid - both of which&nbsp;are biomarkers used to detect mild cognitive impairment and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.

In some countries, in order to receive medicines for Alzheimer's, the patient needs to prove that they have an accumulation of amyloids in their brain. Accumulation of amyloids is one of the indicators of Alzheimer's disease which the blood test conducted by researchers at Lund University attempted to find.&nbsp;

“Increases in p tau-217 concentrations in the blood are quite profound in Alzheimer’s disease. At the dementia stage of the disease, levels are more than 8 times higher compared with elderly without Alzheimer’s,”&nbsp;study coauthor Dr Sebastian Palmqvist was quoted as saying by CNN.&nbsp;

Tia Gordon, from Northampton, first fell ill during the Covid lockdown in March 2020. Her sickness initially occurred every few months, then increased to monthly, and eventually became a daily ordeal from November 2023 to January 2024.

Despite many consultations, doctors repeatedly missed identifying her tumour, instead attributing her symptoms to migraines and stomach bugs.

Even when she developed new symptoms like a stiff neck, medical professionals dismissed them as issues related to her sleeping posture and referred her to a physiotherapist.

As her condition deteriorated, affecting her balance and ability to walk, she was finally admitted to the hospital. An emergency scan revealed a 3.5cm brain tumour, specifically a pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common type in children. Following a lengthy 10-hour surgery, the benign tumour was successfully removed.

Tia's mother, Imogen Darby, who works as a pharmacy dispenser, mentioned that Tia's glasses prescription was altered four times before the tumour was identified.

Ms Darby said, ''I was told Tia had stomach bugs and migraines. The first thing I was told, because it was the summer, (was that) she just needed to drink more water. After probably a year, she got diagnosed with migraines and they gave her paracetamol for that. She was also given another medication for that and her final diagnosis in January (this year) from paediatrics was migraine with sickness.''

''Over more than three years, I took Tia to doctors, she was refused MRIs, she was refused to be seen by emergency paediatrics, I called 111, I went to A&amp;E, she had her glasses changed four times, she was given medication and she had a consultant, but it took for her to be unable to walk for her to get the care she needed,'' she added.&nbsp;

Following the operation, the young girl is eager to resume her usual routines such as reading and playing dodgeball. However, she will undergo MRI scans every three months for the next five years and is currently undergoing physiotherapy, in addition to regular appointments with neurologists.

The researchers measured various micoRNA molecules in the blood, the regulators of gene activity.

After adjusting for variables such as age, sex, and socio-economic status, the team found that teenagers with depression exhibited significantly higher levels of nine specific microRNAs in their blood compared to their non-depressed counterparts.&nbsp;

US man, first to be diagnosed with autism, dies at 89

A 26-year-old woman shared a shocking diagnosis she went through after she suffered a knee fracture while sitting on the toilet seat at her home.&nbsp;

According to a report published by New York Post, Bethany Eason had been experiencing knee pain for seven years and had been referred to a doctor.

The woman was advised to get an X-ray done of her knee. After checking the X-ray, the doctor told her there was "something there" and asked Eason to visit a therapist for treatment, stated the outlet.&nbsp;

In February 2017, the woman was facing extreme pain in her left leg while climbing the stairs. Later when she sat on the toilet seat, her knee bone fractured.

On visiting the hospital, Eason was informed it happened because of the presence of a giant cell tumour in her knee because of which her bones and surrounding soft tissue had weakened.&nbsp;

The diagnosis was earth-shattering and beyond Eason's imagination as she had just graduated from college.&nbsp;

"It just shattered,” Eason said, while speaking about her “one-in-a-million” happening. “I felt this immense pain and it was almost like a pop — it was really traumatic," she added.&nbsp;

Eason was informed by the doctors that she needs to undergo both a knee and thighbone replacement because of the tumour.

"I was heartbroken - I used to dance, run and swim and thought I would never be able to do those things again. At that moment in time you don't see a way out - I was told when I had surgery that 99 per cent of patients wouldn't have full mobility after surgery," she said.&nbsp;

She went through intense physical therapy for seven weeks and worked on strengthening her new leg for a year through home exercises and finally wore her pair of heels.

“I didn’t know what my life was going to look like. Now I can do all those things they thought I wouldn’t be able to — I can kneel and run after my little boy,” Eason further explained.

A new technique has been developed by scientists that could help diagnose Parkinson’s disease at an early stage, even before symptoms start showing in a person, and speed up the process of treatment.

It is difficult to diagnose Parkinson’s presently because there is no specific test to detect the condition. Symptoms vary from person to person and similar symptoms have been found in other illnesses, which increases&nbsp;the possibility of a misdiagnosis.

Scientists in the United States have now claimed that they have come up with a way to identify how the abnormal proteins, which are related to the disease, buildup long before the symptoms begin to show. The Lancet Neurology journal published the findings of the scientists.

The research shows that the method, called alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (alphaSyn-SAA), can identify people who stand at risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

The method can create a scope for early detection, diagnosis and the right treatment of the disease. In the last 25 years, the prevalence of Parkinson’s has doubled globally with around 10 million people suffering from the disease.

There has been an increase in awareness of the disease after it was recently diagnosed in high-profile people like British television presenter Jeremy Paxman and US congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.

The study's co-lead author and University of Pennsylvania's Prof Andrew Siderowf said, “Identifying an effective biomarker for Parkinson’s disease pathology could have profound implications for the way we treat the condition, potentially making it possible to diagnose people earlier, identify the best treatments for different subsets of patients and speed up clinical trials.”

Parkinson’s is caused by the build-up of abnormal proteins throughout the nervous system and the brain. The buildup of proteins is said to start years before physical symptoms like the slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and tremors start to show.

The study included 1,123 participants, which was one of the largest assessments so far carried out, to study the usefulness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique.

The study confirmed that the people with Parkinson’s were accurately detected through the technique and also the individuals who were at risk but had no early symptoms were identified before diagnosis.

The researchers, however, cautioned that longer-term studies, taking into account larger sample sizes, would be required to fully understand the effectiveness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique.

The method can create a scope for early detection, diagnosis and the right treatment of the disease. In the last 25 years, the prevalence of Parkinson’s has doubled globally with around 10 million people suffering from the disease. There has been an increase in awareness of the disease after it was recently diagnosed in high-profile people like British television presenter Jeremy Paxman and US congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. The study's co-lead author and University of Pennsylvania's Prof Andrew Siderowf said, “Identifying an effective biomarker for Parkinson’s disease pathology could have profound implications for the way we treat the condition, potentially making it possible to diagnose people earlier, identify the best treatments for different subsets of patients and speed up clinical trials.” Parkinson’s is caused by the build-up of abnormal proteins throughout the nervous system and the brain. The buildup of proteins is said to start years before physical symptoms like the slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and tremors start to show. The study confirmed that the people with Parkinson’s were accurately detected through the technique and also the individuals who were at risk but had no early symptoms were identified before diagnosis. The researchers, however, cautioned that longer-term studies, taking into account larger sample sizes, would be required to fully understand the effectiveness of the alphaSyn-SAA technique. Over 41 million dementia cases globally undiagnosed, claims study

A computer was&nbsp;better&nbsp;than&nbsp;human dermatologists at detecting&nbsp;skin&nbsp;cancer&nbsp;in a&nbsp;study&nbsp;that pitted human against the machine in the quest for&nbsp;better, faster diagnostics, researchers said Tuesday.

A team from Germany, the United States and France taught an artificial intelligence system to distinguish dangerous&nbsp;skin&nbsp;lesions from benign ones, showing it more&nbsp;than&nbsp;100,000 images.

The machine -- a deep learning convolutional neural network or CNN -- was then tested against 58 dermatologists from 17 countries, shown photos of malignant melanomas and benign moles.

Just over half the dermatologists were at "expert" level with more&nbsp;than&nbsp;five years of experience, 19 percent had between two and five years' experience, and 29 per cent were beginners with less&nbsp;than&nbsp;two years under their belt.

"Most dermatologists were outperformed by the CNN," the research team wrote in a paper published in the journal Annals of Oncology.

On average, flesh and blood dermatologists accurately detected 86.6 per cent of&nbsp;skin&nbsp;cancers from the images, compared to 95 per cent for the CNN.

"The CNN missed fewer melanomas, meaning it had a higher sensitivity&nbsp;than&nbsp;the dermatologists," the&nbsp;study's first author Holger Haenssle of the University of Heidelberg said in a statement.

It also "misdiagnosed fewer benign moles as malignant melanoma... this would result in less unneccessary surgery."&nbsp;

The dermatologists' performance improved when they were given more information of the patients and their&nbsp;skin&nbsp;lesions.

The team said AI may be a useful tool for faster, easier diagnosis of&nbsp;skin&nbsp;cancer, allowing surgical removal before it spreads.

There are about 232,000 new cases of melanoma, and 55,500 deaths, in the world each year, they added.

But it is unlikely that a machine will take over from human&nbsp;doctors&nbsp;entirely, rather functioning as an aid.

Melanoma in some parts of the body, such as the fingers, toes and scalp, are difficult to image, and AI may have difficulty recognising "atypical" lesions or ones that patients themselves are unaware of.
