Moisture from western disturbances that brought rainfall to large parts of the plains over the last two days has led to ‘very dense’ foggy conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, with similar weather expected till Saturday.

Another western disturbance is expected to influence the plains of northwest India from Saturday evening, with the possibility of drizzles in parts of Delhi, the IMD said.

“There is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere due to the western disturbance that has just passed Delhi NCR. With winds calming, this has allowed very dense fog to form again in the region,” an IMD official said on Friday.

Delhi woke up to a thick blanket of fog on Wednesday with very poor visibility. Everyday travel operations were affected due to dense fog, with more than 50 flights delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on Jan 31.&nbsp;

As per reports, the national capital recorded its coldest January in 21 years in terms of day temperatures. The mean maximum temperature in January at Safdarjung was 17.9 degrees Celsius. It was the same as in 2015 and the lowest since 2003.

<h2>Rains amid foggy weather to further drop mercury</h2>

The Met department has also issued a yellow alert in the national capital till February 2 in the wake of persistent dense fog over the next few days. On Wednesday afternoon, parts of Delhi also received light rainfall after a foggy morning, which led to drop&nbsp;in the temperatures further.

The IMD has also predicted light rain accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph at most places over Delhi on Wednesday and light rainfall/drizzle on 1st and 3rd February.

As per the Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi as well, the city will receive light to very light rain (drizzle) on Thursday (Feb 1) with minimum temperature dropping to 8 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The department also predicted dense fog with a partly cloudy sky on Friday (Feb 2) with a minimum temperature as low as 6 degrees Celsius. The heavy fog situation in the city is not expected to get better before February 3.

There is also a prediction for very light rain on Saturday (Feb 3) towards the evening or night, with a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius.

"We are expecting heavy rain and snowfall in the mountain regions (Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, and Uttarakhand) due to the western disturbance. The effect of this disturbance will be seen in plain areas like Haryana, Delhi NCR, and Uttar Pradesh,"&nbsp;said Dr Kuldeep Srivastava, Head of Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi while speaking to ANI.

Schools Closed In Noida The district administration has ordered schools in Noida and Greater Noida to remain closed for students up to eighth grade till January 14 because of the dense fog and cold wave conditions. Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar issued the order for all schools recognised by the state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB and others. "In compliance with the instructions given by District Magistrate Maneesh Kumar Verma, due to the dense fog and extreme cold, all the board (CBSE/ICSE IB, UP Board and others) affiliated schools (from Class nursery to 8) running in the district Gautam Buddh Nagar, will observe holiday till January 14," the order stated, adding that all schools must follow its strictly. West Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a drastic plunge in minimum temperatures in the last few days. In Gautam Buddh Nagar, the minimum temperature recorded was nine degrees Celsius on Saturday. According to the IMD forecast, the temperature will range between nine and 13 degrees Celsius over the next six days. IMD reported maximum and minimum temperatures on Monday to settle at 23 and 6.5 degrees Celsius, respectively. While the maximum temperature will range between 22 to 23 degrees Celsius in the coming week, the minimum temperature might fall to 6 degrees Celsius. As per IITM's decision support system, 12 per cent of Delhi's total PM2.5 emission came from transport, about 5 per cent was due to industries and 41 per cent from other sources. There are a variety of factors that contribute to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi. Smoke from farmers burning crop stubble, vehicle exhaust and factory emissions combine to form a toxic concoction that remains stranded in the lower part of the atmosphere during the winter season.

Out of this, two causes have largely grabbed the limelight: stubble burning and Delhi’s cold temperature.

<h2>Dip in stubble burning&nbsp;</h2>

A new analysis done by Climate Trends, a Delhi-based research institute, has revealed that stubble burning—which largely takes place in the agricultural states of Punjab and Haryana—has actually seen a drop in the past two years.

It has indicated that Delhi’s meteorology might have played a major part in Delhi breathing toxic smog this year.

Using NASA Earth VIIRS data to count farm fires and wind and temperature profile data from CPCB reveal that there has been a 47.8 per cent reduction in farm fires in Punjab and a 38.04 per cent reduction in Haryana between 2022 and 2023 for the period Oct 1 to Nov 5.

Of this, Sangrur district has performed better in Punjab with 46 per cent reduction, from 4,287 fire counts in 2022 to only 2,295 fire counts in 2023.

<h2>Wind direction contributing to smog in Delhi?</h2>

Analysing the wind trajectory data reveals a strong correlation between the wind direction originating from Punjab and Haryana and the resulting pollution levels in Delhi, the study states.

The wind carries pollution from Punjab and Haryana to Delhi 81 per cent of the times, based on the wind trajectory for October 2023, the study notes.

"Air pollution in Delhi is again hovering in the severe to emergency category with AQI levels crossing 400. Our analysis shows that the delicate balance of wind speed, year-round air pollution, and seasonal stubble burning all have a role to play in creating this annual cocktail of noxious gases. 81% of the wind in Delhi these days is from Punjab and Haryana,” Aarti Khosla, Director, Climate Trends, said.

“While the farm fires data from Punjab and Haryana reveals a substantial reduction by 47.8% and 38.04% respectively, against data for October 2022, but since volume of wind from the region is so high, it brings the undesirable impact of heavy pollution,” she added.

“We can also clearly see the meteorological impacts with wind breeze having a big role to play in combination with local sources- construction dust, traffic pollution and small scale industries,” she said.

She said that the government must keep a year-round check on polluting sources of power plants, industries, traffic and construction

“Also rainfall, wind speed and temperatures impact regional and local air pollution levels. Emissions from human-induced activities have to be controlled strictly at source to reduce the influence of meteorology on the national capital's&nbsp;air&nbsp;quality," Khosla added.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature is forecasted to be at 7 degrees Celsius while the maximum would be around 19 degrees Celsius.

"Due to low-level cloud cover and cold north-northwesterly winds, cold day conditions is very likely to persist over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh &amp; Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and North Madhya Pradesh during next 24 hours," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weather forecast report said.

The IMD also issued a warning of severe cold day conditions at, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh.

The presence of the Western Disturbance is likely to result in light rain showers at isolated places in Delhi and its adjoining regions between March 11 and 13. The downpour is expected to wash out the air pollutants and significantly improve the air quality index.

On Thursday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 28 degree Celsius and 11 Degree Celsius with humidity oscillating between 85 to 88 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The overall AQI of Delhi was docking at 142 in the morning. At Dhirpur, the AQI was 120 at 8 am, while in Mathura Road area it dipped to the moderate category at 156. Furthermore, AQI near Pitampura, Airport Terminal 3 and Delhi University stood at 138, 121 and 157 respectively according to SAFAR.

According to the Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, the day temperatures will now increase, while the night temperatures will not see any major changes.

On closer look, while most states of Northern India are still under the influence of successive weather systems affecting the northern hills and plains, some areas of South India start experiencing hot-dry conditions with very high maximums.

The MeT department has predicted that March to May, 2019 season average temperatures are likely to be normal over most of the subdivisions except a few subdivisions of Northwest India,&nbsp;and southern part of west coast where above normal temperatures are most likely.

"Since the last two to three days, parts of South India particularly Rayalaseema and Interior Tamil Nadu have been experiencing heatwave like condition, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees,"&nbsp;Skymet said.

"At present, a trough is extending from interior parts of Tamil Nadu to Comorin region. However, we do not expect any significant weather activities in association with this system, but chances of isolated patchy rain for short duration over a few places cannot be ruled out," it added.&nbsp;

"At present, a trough is extending from interior parts of Tamil Nadu to Comorin region. At Dhirpur, the AQI was 337, while in Mathura Road area it dipped to 'very poor' category at 306.&nbsp;

Due to increase in the PM 10 levels, regions such as Dwarka, Mundaka, Rohini and Anand Vihar registered "severe" air-quality.

Taking the cognisance of the prevailing situation, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has made certain recommendations to the Supreme Court to combat the menace of air pollution.

In its dossier, the CPCB recommended banning of industrial, construction and demolition activities in the major hotspot areas where air quality plummeted.&nbsp;

The organization has also stated that stringent actions must be taken against the defaulters breaching pollution laws put in place by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, traffic police and other agencies. Misty morning in Delhi, air quality remains in 'very poor' category

Delhi Shelter authorities have claimed that they failed to persuade 1,100 homeless people to shift to night shelters from streets.

The government was informed that roughly 1,167 people across the city have rejected attempts of shifting them to night shelters, by rescue teams.

The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), which deploys the rescue teams, has written to the city government&#39;s revenue department apprising it of the situation.

A letter was sent to government informing that around 1,167 people across the city have rejected attempts of shifting to night shelters by rescue teams.

In that letter, it was also mentioned that people who were displaced from Kathputali colony JJ colony which was recently demolished by Delhi Development Authority have been spotted.

The reasons for people refusing to shift to night shelters are considered to be unhygienic conditions, fear of theft, lack of space, and brawls involving junkies.

According to a list attached to the letter, the numbers are 200 near the ISBT, 200 near AIIMS, 150 in Safdarjung, 50 near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and 20 near Hanuman Mandir.

Delhi was experiencing cold waves since New Year&#39;s day due to the snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, there were media reports saying that more than 40 people have been died in Delhi because of the cold.

However, CEO of &nbsp;DUSIB denied reports of anybody dying from cold and said that such deaths cannot be associated with cold as they happen in summers also.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also acknowledged the deaths and called CEO a &quot;useless officer&quot; while attacking Lt Governor Anil Baijal.

Overall above 100 deaths have happened in Northern India in this winter due to severe cold of which more than 70 people died in UP only.

Currently, DUSIB&#39;s 261-night shelters, run through NGOs on a contract basis, have a capacity to house 20,934 people. Singh claimed the peak occupancy during nights this winter season has been 13,810. 
Of the 261 shelters, 83 are concrete structures, 115 are portacabins, while the rest, save one, are tents.

Every night, a subway near AIIMS is thrown open for the families of outstation patients thronging the premier hospital to take shelter.

DUSIB says,1,100 homeless in Delhi prefer streets over shelters

The death toll of people dying of cold wave in north India has reached over 100 with about 70 dead in Uttar Pradesh.

By Tuesday, there were media reports of at least 44 people died in the national capital region due to the harsh cold.
