<p>News agency Reuters has reported that the European Union has warned tech giants Google, Facebook, and Twitter to tackle deepfakes or be ready to face adverse consequences.</p>

<p>As a part of its crackdown against fake news, the European Commission is expected to publish the updated code of practice on disinformation on Thursday.</p>

<p>With responsibility shared between the regulators and signatories to the code, the voluntary code, which was introduced in 2018, will now become a co-regulation scheme.</p>

<p>Facebook research scientists Tal Hassner and Xi Yin said their team worked with Michigan State University to create software that reverse engineers deepfake images to figure out how they were made and where they originated.</p>

<p>"Our method will facilitate deepfake detection and tracing in real-world settings, where the deepfake image itself is often the only information detectors have to work with," the scientists said in a blog post.</p>

<p>"This work will give researchers and practitioners tools to better investigate incidents of coordinated disinformation using deepfakes, as well as open up new directions for future research," they added.</p>

<p>Facebook's new software runs deepfakes through a network to search for imperfections left during the manufacturing process, which the scientists say alter an image's digital "fingerprint."</p>

<p>"In digital photography, fingerprints are used to identify the digital camera used to produce an image," the scientists said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Similar to device fingerprints, image fingerprints are unique patterns left on images... that can equally be used to identify the generative model that the image came from."</p>

<p>"Our research pushes the boundaries of understanding in deepfake detection," they said.</p>

<p>Microsoft late last year unveiled software that can help spot deepfake photos or videos, adding to an arsenal of programs designed to fight the hard-to-detect images ahead of the US presidential election.</p>

<p>The company's Video Authenticator software analyzes an image or each frame of a video, looking for evidence of manipulation that could be invisible to the naked eye.</p>

<p>Fans of Hollywood actor Tom Cruise were going gaga over his TikTok videos until they realised the videos were all fake. Such is a technology-driven world we live in, that it is nearly impossible to recognise which images and videos are real and which ones are deepfakes.</p>

<p>Deepfake is the new age photoshop that gives a person the power to make anyone do anything on camera. These videos look and sound too real to be fake.</p>

<p>A video that recently started doing rounds on the internet was a clip of a former US President saying 'President Trump is a complete dips**t'. However, that definitely was not President Obama actually using such crass language for Trump, it was yet another deepfake.</p>

<p>If you are still not satisfied with the examples, here's another one in which the Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg can be seen saying "Imagine this for a second: one man with total control of billions of people's stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures". However, that video was also proved to be a deepfake.</p>
